This series is just so good, it gets better with each book. Something that is rare in the fact that in most series as they get to that half way point, they start to stumble and loose their direction and appeal a bit. But not the Stillhouse lake series.
Even if you have not read the books before I feel like you could pick this one up and be just fine. It is a mystery that deep dives into cult life and missing people.
With a twist at the end that even I didnt see coming, and when I am fooled it always makes me love a book. I usually can spot the twists before it hits me but this author has a way of pulling a fast one.
I have really enjoyed this series and while parts of it get a little monotonous throughout the series, I guess I am just a glutton for punishment. Who doesn't love a good cult book?
I was looking forward to Rachel Caine's newest installment in the Stillhouse Lake series and it didn't fail to impress. I enjoy Rachel's style of writing and enjoy how she draws you into the characters. She makes you feel invested in their story and route for their survival. This novel had an enjoyable storyline.
Another great addition to the series. I thought I was done after the last book, but no, I really enjoy this series and I like the direction it went!
Another fast paced, un-put-downable story in the Stillhouse Lake Series. It's a family I've grown to know and love and each time a new struggle is presented for them, I want to hug them a quickly run them away. But even Gwen knows better than that. No better way to protect your children then to make sure they are prepared.
This time, Gwen's new job as a P.I. pulls her again in to the crosshairs of a pretty wild group. Unfortunately, Gwen doesn't know them but, like most of the world, they know her. The kids, Sam - no one is safe in this story anymore. Also an old but true group, still local and mean, are back again to push Gwen and Sam to make some pretty rough decisions.
The conclusion was one I honestly didn't see coming as each new twist was a new revelation, but it was well done and I can't wait to read the next.
this was a great mystery novel, the characters were great and real. The plot itself was great and I really enjoyed reading this book.
This is one of my favorite series and this book didn't let me down at all. I loved "seeing" Gwen, Lanny, Cooper, and Sam again. Their characters really grow on you and as a reader I really feel like I know each one. Gwen is definitely now a private investigator and she's assigned to a missing persons case for a man named Remy Landry. It's already kind of a cold case since he's been missing for three years now. The case goes to where one might not have expected, at least not at first. The mystery was good and I always like plot twists which Caine gave me.
So much has went on and is currentlyg going on in 2020. The Stillhouse Lake clan hasn't disappointed with this book. It was a much needed warm blanket on a really cold night. A hearty thick stew to a starving person. Gwen, Sam, Lanny & Connor are always smack dab in the middle of SOMETHING MAJOR! I hope the next part is almost completed!
Thanks to Rachel Caine, the publisher & Netgalley for providing this copy for me to review
This is a good addition to the series and does well to continue that classic character development alongside solving the mystery. I liked seeing how Conner, Lanny, Gwen and Sam are growing, while still seeing hints of their past coming to the surface.
I wasn’t a huge fan of the mystery component, as it took a turn I wasn’t very interested in, but I liked seeing how the mystery element brought the family together, showcased each member’s perspective, and pushed the family in a new direction.
This was a quick read with good pace and a nice balance of action, character development, and detective work. I would have preferred more case solving, as the story got a little bulky for me with conflict coming from several sides at once, but I liked how the story was resolved and what that means for the series.
The end was a bit quick for me as well, it was only a few paragraphs to wrap everything up, but I am looking forward to the next book to see how this installment affected them and where they’re headed next.
I would recommend this book to anyone who has already read the series, as this one isn’t too easy to follow without knowing the backstory.
I really enjoyed this read! I have followed along with Rachel Caine as she has written each book in the Stillhouse Lake series and I must say that I am pretty impressed with how she has developed the story line. Honestly, after I read book three, I was a little concerned that book 4 would be taking it too far but Caine has pulled it off. It sucks you in and keeps you hooked for a fast and intense ride. I am excited to read book 5!!
Rachel Caine is flawless. Love this book and love her. Highly recommend it to all my friends. So good!
This book was everything I needed in the Stillhouse series. I love the Proctors but more so Sam Cade. He had and still has every reason to resent Gwen but loves her and her children unconditionally.
This novel was like a trip back in time through the history books when we learned about Waco. Cults, captivity, sacrifices, punishment and saints. I was on the edge of my seat the entire book. I could not put this down.
I cannot wait to get started on the 5th installment: Heartbreak Bay!

In Bitter Falls Gwen takes on the case of a missing child that has not been seen or heard from in years. But Gwen is not a quitter. She will do everything she can to find the answers good or bad for a grieving mother. But the real question is what will Gwen have to sacrifice to get those answers.
Gwen and her family have had to endure more than their fair share of trials and tribulations over the last few three books. I think that Bitter Falls is their toughest test yet. I enjoyed this book a lot and was very happy that I picked up for review.
I am looking forward to what is next in this series.
It's tough to rate this one because it ticked me off like no other. Gina and her family have now spent so much time prepping for when they're attacked in their own home but they failed miserably when actually tested. Super frustrating as a reader. This involved looking for missing people that joined a cult which is always freaky to read about.
Love this series! This author really knows how to wave a story. I’m looking forward to more books by her.
I love Rachel Caine's books and this was no different. I think every book she writes is different and unique in what she presents in terms of the town, the people, and their psyche. I was so invested in them all and I can't wait for more in this world.
I've really enjoyed the Stillhouse Lake series,so I couldn't wait for the next instalment!
Rachel Caine has done it again with Book 4 - an engaging thrill-ride with well-developed characters and a plot that expertly twists and turns. There is always the danger with an extended series that it will start becoming tired, limping along rather than racing as it did in the beginning. There is no danger of that here, and as long as Rachel Caine keeps writing these books, I will keep reading them.
Thank you to NetGalley and to the publisher, who provided me with a free advance copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
What a great thriller, full of suspense and twists. I’ve enjoyed all of the books in the Stillhouse Lake series and will definitely be reading the next one. Gwen is such a strong character that I love following along her journey.
I abandoned this book in chapter 12.
The book is part of a series, and I felt lost multiple times when the characters would refer back to events that I should know about but didn't. Feeling lost is not a deal-breaker for me but does make it harder to get through a book.
The changing points of view were what ultimately made me put the book down and not pick it back up. Reading about a teenager angsting about her sexual fantasies and hangups had me rolling my eyes more than reading the book. It doesn't matter whether it's straight or Lesbian; teenage angst is not what I care to read, especially in a thriller.
I never really connected with the characters, and I don't believe that I will pick this book up again. I don't like to leave a starred review when I don't complete a book, but here is a reason for why I abandoned this book, which is not something that I like to do.
The 4th installment of the Stillhouse Lake series picks up right where #3 left off. Gwen has accepted a job as a private investigator and her new case has the potential to bring more attention (and harm) to her and her family. She and Sam and still putting the pieces back together after his secret came out that he helped form The Lost Angels. They are also considering leaving Stillhouse Lake for a fresh start. When they start receiving death threats it's hard to tell whether it's related to Gwen's new case, her old enemies, or a mob like family that rules Stillhouse Lake.
I'll continue to read this series (I've heard there's a book 5 coming out soon). Some of the ends get tied up a little too neatly and some of the story lines are slightly unbelievable to me, but these books hold my interest and a few twists are always thrown in. Thank you for the ARC
