This was a wild, twisty ride. I wasn't sure wtf the sisters were up to for a long time. Even though I could "see" they were setting Shay up...but I didn't really know why.
Until things started unraveling.
It was maddening to see things they'd gotten away with!! I absolutely loathed them but also admired their tenacity, ingenuity, and creativity.
The ending was kind of shocking, because I don't think there was enough info presented to make things completely guessable.
I have enjoyed all three co-writes from Hendricks and Pekkanen, and I think You Are Not Alone falls right beneath my favorite, The Wife Between Us. The duo does psychological thrillers so well! This read extremely fast for me once I got settled in and figured out who was who (there are quite a few females to keep straight). I found it to be a captivating story with a cast of extremely interesting characters and I had a difficult time setting it down. Can't wait to see what this entertaining duo has in store for readers next!
4.5 stars.
I really enjoyed this! it was fast-paced and gripping and the writing was great. I found the sisters, friends, and their motivations so intriguing. it made sense to me that Shay would immediately attach herself to this beautiful, tight-knit, seemingly perfect group of women as she was feeling so down and lonely. my only complaint is I found the voices of the sisters & friends pretty difficult to tell apart. definitely recommend!
Another unique mystery by the authors of The Wife between Us and An Anonymous Girl.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen make a superb writing team!
Just when I thought I had it all figured out, I was wrong. The subtle twists and layer upon layer of deception had me second guessing everything.
You Are Not Alone is the story of Shay Miller, a woman in need of love, friendship and self-esteem. After watching a stranger commit suicide Shay meets Jane and Cassandra and finally feels like she's been accepted into an elite group. She has no idea what's in store for her!
A fast-paced thrill ride!
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an arc of this novel in exchange for my honest review.
Can these 2 write or what?
Shay witnesses a tragedy. Shay finds some new friends to help her through this tragedy. Are the Moore sisters too good to be true?
I was constantly saying to Shay, "Don't do it. Don't go there!".
The suspense is constantly having you on the edge of your seat. I like Sean and though he's not in a lot of the book- what he does is the mark of a true friend. He watches out for Shay when she thought only the sisters had her back.
Just when you think the sisters are the worst.... You find out that someone is worse than them and it was shocking, so manipulative!
Really enjoyed this thriller about how in an instant your life can turn upside down! The narrator sees a woman jump in front of a train and is ensconced in this tangle of new friends who once new the woman. Can you trust the company you keep?
3.5 stars
While I liked this book, it wasn't my favorite of the writing duo. The beginning sucked me right in with main character Shay Miller witnessing the suicide of Amanda at a NYC subway platform. It was a very different story, and I liked that. But from 20% of the book to 70% I found myself having a hard time staying interested... I was bored and had to take breaks from reading. The story was original, the characters were okay, but I just couldn't relate to them. No one I really liked except maybe Amanda. From 72% percent to the finish I couldn't put this book down. It was very twisty and I liked how it ended. But it was rather slow up until 70% and that's why I knocked off stars.
I read the kindle version and purchased the audible version so when I couldn't read I could listen. I thought it was one credit worthy and the narrators did a great job. I recommend this book or audible version to anyone who likes a slow burning mystery/suspense book. I look forward to reading more from this writing duo.
A special thank you to St. Martin's Press via NetGalley for the advanced readers copy in exchange for my honest review.
I read and enjoyed this first novel co-authored by this duo, The Wife Between Us. I gave it 3 stars and noted that it was a bit slow but had unexpected twists and an anticlimactic ending, but that overall I was satisfied. Their second collaboration, An Anonymous Girl, got 2 stars from me and the following review, which I can almost verbatim apply to You Are Not Alone:
"An Anonymous Girl is a psychological suspense novel. It's a very slow build with a lot of character development that is a bit dull. Expect female characters, gaslighting, frustrating decisions, and a slow burn of a story. It may work well for some but for me it was not memorable."
The only addition I have to this is that the main character in You Are Not Alone is pathetic in her desperation and neediness to the point of being unsympathetic, and reduces my star rating to a 1. These books are all very similar conceptually, but I feel only the first was truly successful.
This dynamic duo is on fire! I look forward to every novel they publish because let’s be honest here, they’re so damn good! What a hot mess of a story! I love the way you slowly learn a bit of everyone background and you make your guesses and conclusions. Then there’s a big twist and you’re back to zero! I think out of TWBU and AAG this was my favorite! Checked all the marks for me!
Hendricks & Greer do it again. I read it in one sitting. Great thriller with twists & turns that will keep the reader captivated.
Greer and Sarah have done it again! They are the MASTERS of psychological thrillers! I find it impossible to summarize and review their books without giving away spoilers. There were more than a few characters to keep straight, but halfway into the book, their roles became well defined and integral to the story. I enjoyed the twists, layers, and revelations....and couldn’t wait to see how it resolved. I highly recommend this, as well as the other books by this author duo! Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for sharing this exciting novel with me.
i have read all of the books by these authors and this one did not disappoint!
Who would have thought that in a matter of 22 seconds that your life could change? Shay is just at the wrong place at the wrong time and now has three sisters that are making her life horrible.
this thriller book is one that you are not going to want to put down. I would recommend this to anyone that would like a good thriller book, esp on a cold spring night !
Thank you to @stmartinspress and @netgalley for sending me You Are Not Alone. I enjoyed both The Wife Between Us (loved) and An Anonymous Girl so I was pumped to read this one.
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
Gotta love short chapters and multiple POVs! It’s definitely best to go into this one blind but I like how it wasn’t easy to figure out. I enjoyed it and if you loved the duo’s other two books I think it’s a safe bet that you’ll like this one too!
I enjoyed the writing style and the short chapters kept the plot moving along. I was intrigued mostly! The twists and turns were great and I find the mystery brilliant! The chapters alternate between Shay and the other members of the group. Shay is a market researcher and I liked how the authors punctuate her chapters with data. She’s a weird but I felt sorry for her mostly.
"About 50% of Americans rely on their instincts to help them determine what feels truthful and what doesn't. One in seven say they strongly trust their gut to make decisions, while one in ten rarely do."
You Are Not Alone is not as good as The Wife Between Us but its still a really fun and suspenseful read.
After Shay Miller witnesses something that shakes her to the core and upends her world day by day,, she thinks it must be fate becoming friends with sisters Cassandra and Jane Moore. Shay is lonely and upset but when the sisters welcome her in and things start happening in her favor, she can’t believe her newfound luck and friendships. Cassandra and Jane are wealthy, beautiful, poised, and intelligent women. They are so kind to Shay and she desperately needs someone who cares about her. But under the surface of the Moore sisters lives is something more sinister and messed up than Shay can imagine!
It is hard to review this without spoilers, but know that like the other books from this author duo, this is a fast paced mystery that keeps you hooked until your jaw drops at the big revelation!
Shay Miller is in a bleak depressing place. Her boyfriend in a surprise move dumped her. Her employer is downsizing his office and cut Shay's position. Worst of all Shay is, out of need, living with her friend and his girlfriend. What else can go wrong? Well, she can witness a suicide? Yes right in front of her eyes, Amanda, a young nurse, throws herself in front of a speeding subway train.
Actually, witnessing the suicide marked a turning point for Shay. She attends a memorial service for Amanda and meets Amanda's friends. These women are unique and intriguing but most importantly they are interested in Shay. In the next weeks, they offer job prospects, clothing and hair style advice and most importantly friendship.
But this is where I must stop or giveaway the rest of the plot. I do recommend that you delve into this novel and find out what develops.
I enjoyed this latest novel by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. They introduced an unusual character in Shay Miller. Her obsession with numbers, charts and graphs borders on neurotic. The "friends of Amanda" are both sweet and sinister.
It is possible to gather the clues sprinkled along the way and decide what the final outcome will be but determining why that was the outcome is more elusive.
I received an advance copy of this book from #Netgalley #YouAreNotAlone
RATING: 1 STAR
2020; St. Martin's Press
I rated the first novel, written by this duo, as three stars. The Wife Between Us It had great potential - I was intrigued by the premise and set up but then let down with the early clues and then anticlimactic ending. I went into the next book with a bit lowered expectations, but the story was really gripping so I raised the bar. An Anonymous Girl let me down hard. I even said in my review I would not read another book by the authors (never believe me when I say that, as I have major FOMO when it comes to books). I decided to read this one when an online group was doing to a group read. I could not relate to Shay in any way so I found it hard to invest into what was happening in the book. By the 50% mark, I should have just given up and DNF this one, but I was a bit curious so I stayed with it. Unfortunately, it just didn't work for me and I am going to try really really hard to not read the next book.
***I received a complimentary copy of this ebook from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions expressed in this review are entirely my own.***
This book was not a home run for me. The characters were flawed in cliche ways that is common to many other thrillers. I left a lengthier review in Edelweiss.
You Are Not Alone is the story of Amanda, who commits suicide to avoid her fate. It is the story of her friends, Jane and Cassandra, who seem to care about her. And the story of Shay, who witnessed the suicide and befriends Jane and Cassandra - or do they befriend her? And why?
Shay is a lonely young woman with an obsession with data. She researches seemingly everything. And she feels honored when Jane and Cassandra want to hang out with her. But it becomes clear to the reader that something else is going on when they give Shay a makeover to look just like Amanda. But what is the end game?
This book is fast-paced and has a good twist at the end. I would recommend it to any thriller lover.
The past two years, new writer duo Hendricks and Pekkanen's psychological thrillers were favorites of mine and I even felt like they had a chance to dominate the genre; however, this book just didn't have the same vibe. I wasn't drawn into the story right away.
I suppose the premise of the story is ok. The primary narrator, Shay, is a loner who witnesses a girl commit suicide in the subway, is affected to the point of hysteria, becomes involved in the dead girl's social circle, and the rest becomes the meat of the story. Shay's character is interesting. She is a data analyst with a habit of recording statistics for every situation in her life in a notebook she carries with her. This, along with very thorough character development, is incorporated into the story to help the reader get a sense for her personality and I thought that was good. The other characters, when they're introduced, are very one-dimensional, and as a result, I just didn't perceive them the way I feel the authors wanted me to. There could have been more development of their motivations for being so devious and conniving. It made their actions seem over-the-top and unconvincing, especially with the alternating points of view with every chapter. It slowed the flow of the story, making it a bit frustrating to read.
While I didn't enjoy this one as much as I had hoped, I am not saying their books aren't worth reading. I still think this duo have the talent to create enjoyable reads. If I were to recommend one of their books, I'd say An Anonymous Wife is the one I'd choose.
