I loved this book! It was suspenseful through out the book. I was nervous for the main character! I predicted the very end but that was okay I could not put this book down! So glad the mean girls got theirs! I recommend this to my book club and told it’s coming out next week.
I fell in love with the writing of these two authors after reading The Wife Between Us and An Anonymous Girl. Mostly because the stories they weave give me the chills. I continually find myself thinking "Holy crap....this could actually HAPPEN to someone.'' Most of the time when I read thrillers I am safely cocooned in my BS/believability cushion....yeah right, she would do exactly what she shouldn't have done....sure the killer would be right there.....yeah the cops would miss that. You know....the plot doubts that keep me free from freak-outs while reading seriously scary stuff. It's my blanket while reading horror and dark psychologically twisty tales.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen took my blanket! I want my blanket back!
This story totally sucked me in. The main character makes a couple decisions out of kindness....and her world spirals completely out of control.
Shay really has nobody. But, she's all about data anyway. As a market researcher she sees everything in facts and percentages. And as a 31 year old woman alone....she knows what her percentages mean. Then she sees a woman commit suicide in a train station. There was nothing she could do, but she feels terrible. The woman seemed so....empty. Shay leaves flowers at the woman's apartment and goes to the memorial....those actions put her on the radar of a strange group of women, Strong women. Focused women. Retaliation. Revenge. Whatever. They. Want. Shay finds herself sucked into the vortex of the Moore sisters. Can she escape?
Shay is the narrator for most of this story. But you also get peeks into the Moore's heads and other side characters as the plot progresses. It really grew into a mix of cult and gang mentality....yikes! I live in a town with a cult that has been outed on several news programs and books and movies/documentaries for being abusive/controlling/scary.....and they target people who are alone, disenfranchised, easy to dupe with just a little fake attention. And once they have them.....they indoctrinate them and slowly gain control over every little portion of their lives. All control. All manipulation. And severe retaliation if they refuse to comply or try to leave. That's why I found this story believable and chilling. I've seen how intelligent people are pulled into circumstances that they normally wouldn't be drawn to.....it's all clever manipulation and deviant personalities in charge.
Loved it!! They got me again!
(I really would like my safety blanket returned, girls. Seriously. I have a Joe Hill book on my TBR and I can't possibly read it without my BS blanket. Give it back!)
**I voluntarily read a review copy of this book from St Martins Press. All opinions expressed are entirely my own.**
I thought this was really a fabulous book, great plot, character development and enough twists to keep you on your toes.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE is third novel of psychological suspense/domestic suspense and obsession by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen with an expected publication date of March 3rd 2020 by St. Martin's Press. Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are the co-authors of the blockbuster New York Times bestseller, THE WIFE BETWEEN US, as well as the forthcoming, AN ANONYMOUS GIRL. Having been blown away by their first two novels, I was so happy to be able to read and review this new novel. As the title suggests, this is a book that addresses the issue of loneliness. I'm a fan of cat & mouse type thrillers and this played right into that captivating me from the start and never letting go! Another Winner!
I would suggest going into this book blindly…and follow all the clues as woven closely into the story by these two talented authors.
The story opens with Shay Miller, our main character, a market researcher, who witnessed a brutal suicide at the subway station. She tried to stop the young woman, Amanda from jumping in front of the train but was unsuccessful. The only thing left of the crushed young woman is a necklace which Shay absentmindedly puts into her pocket. She ends up going to a memorial for Amanda where she meets her friends, The Moore Sisters; Cassandra and Jane who become very interested in Shay. But what do the sisters really want from Shay?
Shay recently lost her job and her best friend and roommate, Sean, now has a girlfriend. Shay is looking for love and just wants to fit in. It is very easy to sympathize with her situation. My heart went out to her. She was so alone and isolated. So, when Cassandra and Jane and her circle of friends, take Shay under their wings, Shay feels warmth and a belonging.
The novel is told from multiple points of view and alternating past and present timelines. The story is divided into three parts, with each part serving a purpose. I enjoyed reading from Shay’s data book, the opening to each one of her chapters, where she writes down crazy stats, and makes her character more believable.
But how will all play out? I won’t say…but the ending blew me away. I didn’t see it coming!
You Are Not Alone is another psychological suspense thriller written by two very talented authors, Hendricks & Pekkanen. This is a well-developed book, from the clever title and from cover, to the ending. Characters come alive as you read each small detail unfolding. The imagery is vivid and enables you to sense the atmosphere of the various meeting places. The dialogue is so natural and well written, you can imagine the vices. The technique of creating each chapter from an individual character’s view is used throughout to great effect. Highly recommended!
My thanks to the authors, St. Martin’s Press and Netgalley for my digital copy.
I devoured this book! Having read and enjoyed all of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen‘s other co-authored works, I set the bar high. Yet, I found myself eager to dig deeper into the story each night and definitely stayed up way past my bedtime to finish it. Without giving any spoilers, I will say that I was immediately drawn in thanks to the great writing, character development, and little twists and turns along the way. The story really came to life and kept me engaged and wanting more. I consider this their best book yet!
Just finished reading YOU ARE NOT ALONE by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. I recieved this ARC from MacMillanbooks via Netgalley in exchange for an honest review. Official publishing date is March 3rd.
Shay, our lonely main character, witnesses the suicide jump of a woman named Amanda at track level. Shocked by this tragic event Shay becomes very interested in this woman's life and what caused her to jump. Attending a memorial service for Amanda, Shay bumps into two of Amanda's close friends Jane & Cassandra. Shay feels a close bond with them and they seem to feel the same way too... But what if they don't and are more curious about if she knows their secrets?
This was a slow read for me. It took me about halfway through the book for me to get into it. Definitely a cat and mouse thriller, but a bit dull. The end was also not really a surprise or shock. Also felt no connection to the main character Shay, almost felt sad for her, but was rooting for her in the end to come out on top.
Review will also be posted on Indigo.ca, Goodreads and Instagram @torontobibliophile on March 1st, 2020.
Thanks again for the opportunity to read!
This was a terrific suspenseful thriller. It was great to get swept up on a book and to feel super stressed out over something with low stakes. Books are so important in controlling anxiety and helping me get away from the stress of the world. I really enjoyed this one.
Wow what a page turner! This is the best thriller I’ve read in a while, and definitely my favorite that I’ve read so far from this author duo. A really unique concept, and so many twists and turns that I did not see coming. I was holding my breath for so much of this book (in the best way)!
Thanks to NetGalley & St. Martin’s Press for an advanced copy of this book.
**Disclaimer: I received a free advanced reader’s copy of You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to them and the publishers for this opportunity.
You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is an adult mystery/thriller set in New York City. The events in the book center around the protagonist, Shay Miller, who is a data analyst unsatisfied with her lot in life and who gets caught up in a mystery. I gave this book 4 stars on Goodreads. It publishes on March 3rd, 2020.
Here’s the summary from NetGalley:
The electrifying #1 New York Times bestselling authors of THE WIFE BETWEEN US and AN ANONYMOUS GIRL return with a brand new novel of psychological suspense.
Shay Miller wants to find love, but it eludes her. She wants to be fulfilled, but her job is a dead end. She wants to belong, but her life is increasingly lonely.
Until Shay meets the Moore sisters. Cassandra and Jane live a life of glamorous perfection, and always get what they desire. When they invite Shay into their circle, everything seems to get better.
Shay would die for them to like her.
She may have to.
I read An Anonymous Girl by the same authors last year, and that’s what initially drew me to this book in particular. I like the twists in An Anonymous Girl, and I thought that reading some thing else by the authors would be interesting, so when I saw You Are Not Alone on NetGalley I just couldn’t help myself. I needed to pick it up. I was super excited when I found out that I got approved. As it turned out, this was just the right book for me at this time. I’ve been going through a little bit of a reading slump when it came to fantasy novels, and reading a thriller definitely helped remedy that problem.
As I mentioned earlier, I gave this book 4 stars. A four star rating is pretty good for me, and is typically about my average rating for a book. When I gave a book four stars, it means I enjoyed it, I had fun, but it didn’t blow me away. That description is very apt for You Are Not Alone. I liked this book, and I had fun reading it, but it didn’t blow me away.
The plot of the story was really interesting. The summary of the book really doesn’t give you a lot of information, so I went into this not knowing a lot about what was gonna happen I want to try to keep my review vague so that I don’t spoil it for anyone, because I think that it’s sometimes the best way to read a thriller. It definitely kept me guessing when it came to this book. I genuinely had no idea what to expect, and genuinely couldn’t have predicted guests, personally. I’m sure some people might’ve seen them coming but I was Surprised by what ended up happening. I had a hard time putting this book down.
One thing I really liked about the story was the main character. Shay was an interesting protagonist, because you don’t often read stories where the protagonist is a data analyst. It’s not a profession that you read a lot about, but it was really interesting to hear the varying statistics. I also liked that each chapter opened with a statistic/piece of data that related to what was happening in the story at the time. It added an interesting layer of depth to the story.
The different point of views in the story were interesting. Each was set up to portray a different type of person, and I liked the way they were peppered throughout the story. It made for some interesting expansion. I also really liked the way the different points of view let you in on different pieces of the puzzle. It was hard to tell how all those pieces fit together until you got to the very end. I didn’t predict what was going to happen, and I really loved that.
However, you’ll notice that I did give it four stars instead of five. The reason for that is that it didn’t blow me away. I wasn’t obsessed with it. I had fun reading it, but it’s not a new favourite and I don’t know if I would reread it. Some of the side characters felt unnecessary and some were kind of flat.
Overall, I quite enjoyed the book. I wanted to know what was going to happen and I wanted Shay to make it through. If you’re looking for a thriller, You Are Not Alone is worth checking out after it releases on March 3.
You Are Not Alone is an unputdownable thrill ride I didn’t want to end. It’s a fantastic book with nail biting suspense, and a unique storyline to boot. I loved it!!
Shay Miller is your average but lonely NYC gal who unfortunately witnesses a young woman around her age jumping off a subway platform onto an incoming train. Shay’s come unglued, and is obsessed over learning anything she can about the woman. She meets the glamorous and successful Monroe sisters while at the woman’s memorial service. Seeing as they were friends of the woman, she becomes fast friends with them to learn more about her. But looks can be deceiving... she soon finds herself in a devilishly clever game of cat and mouse.
You Are Not Alone is written with a slow build up through both Shay and the other character’s points of view. You know it’s all leading somewhere, but where? And which characters are reliable and trustworthy?
I couldn’t stop reading.. I had to find out.
Mystery is around every corner with the writer’s keeping you just shy of figuring out the answer needed to solve the puzzle. Towards the end you’ll see how all the pieces finally fit together. I loved the intrigue of it all, and was in the dark until it’s shocking, eye popping, and yes.. jaw dropping end. Well played ladies!
*Many thanks to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for providing me with a digital ARC of this book. All opinions are my own.
Another great girl power thriller from the Greer Hendricks duo. Picture yourself on a subway platform and a woman throws herself in front of the train. Your life is already subpar and now you are traumatized about even getting on the subway. If you can imagine that, then you can put yourself in Shay's shoes. If two glamorous women started including you in their social engagements, helped you find your own apartment, and more you would be very happy to enjoy the opportunities provided. There are strings attached though, and those other women are adept at pulling at loose threads. I found this got off to a bit of a slow start, but I found it more and more engaging as more layers were exposed. The data points at the beginning of each chapter were a wonderful way to really tune into Shay's persona.
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for a DRC in exchange for an honest review.
Shay Miller lost her job. Her adorable roommate Sean suddenly has a girlfriend. Feeling sorry for herself, imagining things can’t get any worse, Shay witnesses a beautiful woman jump in front an oncoming train. Still shaken, she gives her statement to the police but can’t let go of this horrific event and decides to attend the woman’s memorial service. It is there she meets the Moore sisters. They are exquisite, fashionable and successful. A small group of their friends closely gather and Shay can barely imagine what life would be like if she had that kind of support. Surprisingly Shay continues to bump into the sisters, which statistically in NYC is unlikely. And just like that her life begins to turn around. A job, a new apartment, new friends. As things spins out of control Shay realizes there may be nothing she can do to stop it. Murder, intrigue and suspense fill the pages of this fast-paced story of deceit. Just how far would you go for your friends? Highly recommend this latest release from the amazing writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen.
YOU ARE NOT ALONE is another unputdownable drama/thriller from a talented authoring duo. Shay is somewhat dissatisfied with her life, living as a roommate with a man she loves (who is dating someone else) and temping after she was laid off from her job. Shay's life gets more complicated when she witnesses a suicide- a woman steps off the subway platform into an incoming train. Shay is having flashbacks, wondering what she could have done differently to help this stranger, and finds herself looking into this other woman's life.
When she does, she finds the Moore sisters, Cassandra and Jane, whose lives seem incredible. Shay finds herself wanting to be their friend and reaching out to them more and more as she is pushed away from her current life. However, Cassandra and Jane have plans for Shay- plans that don't become clear until later. The sisters are playing a dangerous game, and Shay is caught in their net.
This book is hard to put down. The story is woven together quite well, so that we read to find out what is actually going on. Like the books before, it did not quite have that true thriller feel, but reads more like a mystery/drama with thriller elements later in the book. There are a lot of twists and turns that make the book highly devourable.
I do wish there was a bit more info about the other women in the circle, as well as closure about all of them. Regardless, it's masterfully written and a great read. Highly recommend for people who enjoy light psychological thrillers. Please note that I received an ARC from the publisher through netgalley. All opinions are my own.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have quickly become favorite authors in the world of psychological thrillers. I loved their 2 previous books! And now this 3rd book definitely did not disappoint.
Shay watches a woman throw herself in front of a subway train. She becomes intrigued with learning about the woman and attends her memorial where she meets the friends. In particular, the Moore sisters are glamorous and beautiful and seem to be interested in Shay. Shay wants nothing more than to become part of their circle of friends.
The authors did a great job at keeping me guessing at what was going on. The twists and turns were perfect to keep me glued to the pages and flipping them as fast as I could.
The story is told from the point of views of Shay, Amanda (the woman who committed suicide), the sisters, and the rest of the “friends” of Amanda. I was quite blown away over the big twists near the end. I’m a sucker for great twists! Well done, ladies!
*Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the advance copy!*
I was so excited to receive this arc because I loved An Anonymous Girl and enjoyed The Wife Between Us as well. This book did not disappoint. The back and forth between present and past as well as the different characters made for an interesting read that kept you on your toes. Twists and turns continued to happen, especially through the last 10% of the book. What a good read!
I am trying to formulate in my head what to type. To try and give a review of this book without giving too many hints so that I don't take away the shock and awe experience to future readers of this book...
I will say that I loved the previous novel, An Anonymous Girl and was excited to read the latest from this author duo. These writing partners have a wonderful way of creating dark, twisty, deceptive mind games with readers. A way of telling a story while keeping the reader on high alert. I really did love whizzing through the chapters of this latest story.
Shay, a main character, is driven in life by numbers and statistics. Numbers never lie, they are black and white, pure and true. The fact that she has such OCD about numbers and stats to the point of constantly writing them down in her journal made a wonderful lead character in this mass chaos surrounding her.
The sisters, who are the antagonists, were a nasty, mean and clever duo. There was a mean girl aspect to them and the friends they kept close. So very clever, but so very devious. Their domineering characteristics clashing with Shay's naivety made for such a compelling read.
"You Are Not Alone" is due to be released here in the US on March 3, 2020. Pre-order this now to add to your list of spring thrillers!
I am so thankful to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for allowing me the eARC to read and give my honest review. It was a 4 star read for me!
Happy Reading!
This is the third book by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. They are masters st the art of deception. I LOVE their writing style. They’re a dynamic duo writing team. Even though this one was not my fave book by this team I still enjoyed it. It was a slow start but the end helped redeem my rating. A great cat and mouse game ensures that this is a great read. You can sort of put the pieces together and know where this one is going but seeing it all come together by the end I do believe you’ll truly enjoy.
If you’re anxiously awaiting the release of this title I highly suggest reading their previous two books while you wait if you haven’t already. I think you’ll fall in love with their writing style.
You Are Not Alone - When Shay witnessed Amanda, a complete stranger commit suicide on a train platform her life changed forever. In Shay’s eyes her life had become richer as Amanda’s closest friends coiled round her to give her life some spark. The question Shay asks too late is why are they so interested in me?
A very clever, sneaky, creepy and twisted plot that was very enjoyable with likeable characters and ones you love to hate.
When one morning Shay Miller observes a woman committing suicide in the New York underground, her life, too, crumbles and falls. The shock sits so deep that she in not able to enter any underground station anymore. She starts to investigate about the woman and soon finds out her name, Amanda, and thus comes across some of her friends: Cassandra and Jane Moore, two sisters her own age who are everything Shay is not: They have a successful PR agency, know how to dress and obviously know the right places and the right people in town. Just as Shay is fascinated by them, they seem to feel pity for her and help her to find a new place to stay when she needs to move out, they help her to get a new style and also can connect her to finally find a better job. All seems to be perfect in Shay’s new life, yet some things are completely wrong and it does not take too long for her to realise that all that glitters isn’t gold, but fake and also highly dangerous.
I was already fascinated by “The Wife Between Us” which convinced me due to the very clever construction of the story. In “You Are Not Alone”, we also get the story narrated from different points of view and also different points in time which cleverly supports suspense since you already get facts which do not make too much sense until you learn the story behind them. As you are always a bit ahead of Shay, you sympathise with her and, of course, you hope that in the end, all will turn out well even though you cannot be too sure of that.
The whole plot lives on the characters. Shay as well as Cassandra and Jane are interestingly drawn and totally contrasting which makes them equally appealing for the reader. Just a simply – yet, quite important aspect – that I totally adored was Shay’s obsession with numbers and statistics. The authors have perfectly integrated this fact into the story.
Apart from the entertaining factor, in my opinion, the novel also provides insight in the psychological mechanisms that operate within people who are a bit unsecure and rather sad since their life did not turn out the way they hoped. Shay is very clever and likeable, nevertheless, in all areas of her life she more or less failed: neither does she have a flat of her own, nor a permanent job or relationship. No wonder that she immediately falls for the shiny and glamorous Moore sisters who represent everything she also wishes for. This makes it quite easy for them to manipulate her – just as they managed to take advantage of others who were in critical situations, too.
A captivating suspense novel that I did not want to put down once I had started.
I couldn’t wait to read this newest psychological thriller from this author duo, and it is sure to be on many hot picks and best of the year lists. This had a slow but steady build rather than fast and furious twists. At about the 50% mark things start to come together and the pace ramps up.
I enjoyed reading this book and I am already looking forward to what these authors come up with next. I did find the ending to be a bit abrupt and perhaps the set up could have been accelerated a bit, but I recommend this book to anyone who wants a female centered psychological thriller.
