This book moved a bit slowly for me, but it did keep me interested and kept me guessing and wanting to know where it would all end up. The plot line required a lot of background and build up. I liked the twist that came at the end and it was unexpected.
The premise of this book sounded great. I really liked Shay. She’s just trying to live her life the best she can. It all goes awry when it appears that Shay witnessed a suicide on the tracks of the NYC subway. The book is very slow for me. The storyline just didn’t work for me. The book has a lot of five star reviews so I think this book just didn’t call to me. I’ve read other books by these authors and enjoyed reading them. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own. I received a copy from the publisher through NetGalley.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have truly mastered the art of crafting stories that begin relatively innocuously but rapidly spiral into something so dark and twisted that the reader is kept clueless until the end.
You Are Not Alone is another of these tales. Shay, a young woman living in New York, witnesses what she assumes is a suicide in a subway station, when a woman appears to leap into the path of a moving train. Although we never know exactly why, Shay becomes almost obsessed with finding out about this woman and what motivated her to take her own life. After finding out where the dead woman’s memorial service is, she attends it, where she meets some stunning young women, Jane and Cassandra, who are sisters. When they ask how Shay knew the deceased, Shay, flustered and unwilling to admit she witnessed the woman’s death, makes up a lie about having met her at a veterinarian’s office.
Soon, and insidiously, Shay is brought into Jane and Cassandra’s inner circle of women friends. Good things begin to happen for Shay, who is not only unemployed but about to move out of her apartment because her roommate moves his girlfriend in, and it’s getting not only crowded but uncomfortable. Magically, it seems, the sisters find her a house sitting gig. When that’s over, Shay magically finds not only a great, affordable apartment, she also finds a wonderful job. As time passes, the sisters transform her into a replica of their late friend.
Shay has an interesting and unusual habit: she’s a data analyst by profession, and observes everything that’s going on and records it in her personal Data Book. Now comes the time in this review that I can go no further, because I don’t want to reveal spoilers. I’ll just say that nothing is at it seems in this book, that it’s a terrific read, and, as in previous books by these authors, prepare to say, “ Whoa! I never saw that coming!”
Great read; highly recommended.
I received this book as an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley.
Having enjoyed other books by these authors, I read You Are Not Alone with high expectations and I wasn't disappointed. This fast-paced psychological thriller delivered on all of its promises - lots of twists and turns, no one is as they seem, and you never know who to trust. My only criticism is that I thought it wrapped up a little too neatly and a bit quickly but that is nit picking. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and strongly recommend it.
This psychological thriller, with its perfect title, was thoroughly captivating. Shay wanted acceptance. She wanted close friends. She wanted to belong …she did not want to be alone anymore. After witnessing a stranger jump in front of a train, Shay did not have to worry about being alone anymore. But now she had other things to worry about.
Once again, these authors have written a fast paced intense engaging read. If you are a fan of psychological thrillers, you will not be disappointed with this book.
ARC given for an honest review.
I've been a fan of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen for a while now- after reading their other novels The Wife between Us and An Anonymous Girl, I was really looking forward to reading You Are Not Alone.
This book centers around Shay, a lonely woman in New York City who is at the wrong place at the wrong time. Shay is in a subway station when the person next to her jumps to her death. Shay has trouble dealing with this, and ends up meeting the woman's friends at the memorial service. Sisters Jane and Cassandra Moore, who are glamourous and powerful, take Shay under their wing. Shay soon realizes the sisters have secrets of their own and no one in the group of friends can be trusted.
One thing that really stood out to me was Shay’s loneliness. She so was desperate for attention and love, she’d do anything to have it. As the reader, I felt a bit sorry for her- it’s easy to see why being friends with the sisters was so important to Shay. It was interesting reading the statistics about loneliness and death, it’s not something I think about often so this has made me more mindful of that.
Things I liked: Binge-worthy popcorn thriller, fast paced, short chapters, quick read. The setting took place in NYC which fit well, and I liked reading the different POV’s. Shay’s databook and statistics were fascinating.
Things I didn’t like: The cast of characters were hard to keep track of, there is a lot time spent on the backgrounds of the women and their present activities. I would have liked to know about Jane and Cassandra were able to become the perfect manipulators. And while I liked the ending, the actual plot twist didn't wow me like in the authors' previous books. By the end of the book, what I wished for was that we could have seen this story from the perspective of the Detective and how they complied the evidence.
Overall, You Are Not Alone is intriguing and fast paced. I would recommend to those who are fans of psychological thrillers.
3.5 stars. Thank you NetGalley and the publisher for sending me an ARC.
This is a book that you want to go into without knowing much, aka DON´T READ THE PLOT SUMMARY! It gives away too much. Hendricks and Pekkanen tell of a girl in her 30s who is down on her luck, but things start to change once she witnesses a suicide and is befriended by the victim´s friends. Picking it up, you could immediately tell you were back in the authors´ world. The writing and atmosphere reminded me a lot of Anonymous Girl. It´s a thriller that I wouldn´t quite call twisty, I was waiting for that moment but it never happened. but I still enjoyed it.
What a wild ride this book was. I have to start by sending a thank you to NetGalley and the publishers for providing me an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
I really enjoyed this book. There were parts that were kind of confusing because there were so many characters. Let me explain. We start by meeting Shay. She witnesses a woman, Amanda, kill herself via jumping in front of a train. Shay is understandable thrown by this and through a series of events, meets Amanda’s friends. Enter the Moore sisters. The most interesting thing with this book was that I liked all of the characters. I understood and even cheered for their actions at times. But as the story went on things got darker and it was an uncomfortable feeling to have once cheered for the things these sisters did. Along with the Moore sisters, there were a few others in their friend group. Once we start to meet them, the chapters start to jump around in time to explain how these friends met the Moore sisters. This was where it was confusing. Trying to remember all of the names and the origin story of each of these women was a lot. This was a pretty short book, so to be given so much information about characters whose story would quickly be over was too much. I liked the chapters of Amanda’s final days that were included, but I think the history of the other friends could have just been explained in the Moore sister’s chapters.
This book was fast paced and compelling. I liked all of the characters and really came to love Shay. I loved that Shay figured out what was going on before it was too late. I liked that they authors made the Moore sisters so likeable that when their true colors were shown it was uncomfortable for me as the reader. I’m always impressed by this author duo and You Are Not Alone was no exception.
You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen lived up to the standard set by their other thrillers. Shay is an early 30s, hardworking data analyst who has lost her way in bustling New York. Her roommate and secret love, Sean, has a new girlfriend and Shay is more alone than ever. One morning, as she leaves her apartment to escape Sean and his girlfriend, Shay witnesses a woman jump in front of the subway. Shay meets her eyes right as she jumps, and is shaken by the emptiness of them. Somehow she also ends up with the girl's unique necklace. Shay can't shake the suicide, and becomes obsessed with figuring out who the girl was and why she did it. Across town, two sisters named Jane and Cassandra are also shaken by the suicide, but more about what secrets the victim spilled before she ended her life. Jane and Cassandra notice Shay snooping around, and befriend her to figure out what she knows. Shay is drawn to the female friendship and glam that Cassandra and Jane bring, and gets so swept up that she doesn't see that she is a pawn in their game. Cassandra and Jane have women to protect, and Shay is a threat to that security.
Loved this book, and the all the female characters. Hendricks and Pekkanen again deliver with a unique plot and deep, dark motivations. This one reminded me a lot of The Anonymous Girl, so if you loved that one, read this. It was easy to follow, and a page turner. Thanks to NetGalley for the chance to read and review!
Excellent thriller. It is best to go into this one pretty much blind. I don't want to give anything away with my review. Just suffice to say that it was a slow burning and well written suspenseful story. I recommend and I am one of those people that really like the Hendricks/ Pekkanen duo's writing.
My thanks to Net galley and publisher for a chance to read and review.
I didn't like this one quite as much as the duo's previous books but it was still a good, twisty thriller. I had -no- idea what was going on. Who was the bad guy? Who was the good guy? Who can I trust? No one. Trust no one. In any Greer/Pekkanen books. I didn't like some of the "reasoning" behind motives. I hated most of the characters. But all in all, this book kept me on my toes and I needed to keep reading in order to find out what was happening!! So that means a good book! And a book that's hard to talk about for fear of spoilers! I still need to read Pekkanen's solo novels.
Shay Miller, despite her best efforts, seems to have all the odds stacked against her. Her skills as a data analyst are being wasted temping as a research assistant at a law firm and the only guy she is interested in, her roommate Sean, just happens to be in a serious relationship. Her life seems to be in a downward spiral until a tragic event places her directly in the path of Jane and Cassandra Moore. The Moore sisters are a winning combination of glamor, sophistication, and success. When Jane and Cassandra take Shay under their wing, her life begins to improve drastically. Shay would do anything to maintain this relationship but the Moore sisters have an alternative agenda and Shay might just be the perfect target.
You Are Not Alone is a new mystery/thriller by co-authors Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. These two women have done it again with another fantastic read. I absolutely loved it, and for me each of their novels has progressively gotten better. As with their other novels, there is always an underlying plot filled with twists and turns that pull you in. This one involves a rather unique friendship among a group of women, all with a similar interest. A tragic accident places Shay in the wrong place at the right time...at least for the Moore sisters. Shay craves friendship and comfort, something these women are more than willing to provide...but at what cost? Shay soon finds herself caught in a tangled web of deceit and lies. This is definitely a must read for 2020...it's completely binge worthy!
I like these two authors who team up to write thrillers and have enjoyed their previous works. This one would be my least favorite. The characters throughout are a bit predictable and the plot drags. Readable but not really mysterious or tension filled.
Copy provided by the Publisher and NetGalley
I received an ARC copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion of it. I was so excited to be chosen to read an advanced copy of this book as I so loved the other books by these authors. I was very disappointed and could only manage to read about 40 percent. I thought that it was so confusing talking about so many different women and going from present to past. Maybe it all comes together at some point but it did not hold my interest enough for me to find out.
Wow! This one did not disappoint. Shay Miller knows what she wants. However, as a person obsessed with statistics, what happens when life doesn’t fit what is expected? Her friendship with sisters, Jane and Cassandra, will put her and her obsession with stats to the test.
Shay Miller is experiencing love, life, and career struggles in New York City until she meets two mysterious sisters, by way of a traumatic event, who seemingly turn her life around (and in turn, upside down).
I enjoyed this book and have enjoyed Pekkanen and Greer's previous two co-written novels. I liked the pace of the middle portion of the novel but felt the start was a little slow and the end was a bit abrupt. The book kept me guessing throughout and I enjoyed Shay's character development and the twists kept me guessing until the end.
I would highly recommend this book to anyone who loves thrillers. I received an ARC of this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review.
You Are Not Alone was a quick read with lots of fun plot twists and intrigue! I quite enjoyed the last half of the book, but not the first. I found the beginning to be very slow in creating mystery and I ended up not caring what happened to a lot of the characters until 80%. All the chapters are told from a different perspective, which I found to be overdone. 2 or 3 changes would be fine with me, but there are about 7-8 different POVs throughout the book. Overall, the mystery was well done and I enjoyed finding out what happened through out the book. I would recommend the authors previous two novels before this one. 3.5/5.
I love this pair of authors, Together their work is fantastic. I was very excited to see that they came out with another collaboration, but unfortunately this one didn't hit my as hard as the others. Interesting story, but felt like there was too many characters to follow and really didn't connect with any of them.
This was really good!!! I say with surprise because pulling off multiple psychological thrillers in a row is almost impossible; because though I adored one, I was meh on the other Greer/Sarah book; because it subverted my expectations and succeeded as pure mystery with lots of well executed tension!
I think the best aspect of this was the relationships between the women. They were all so nuanced and complex (possibly excluding that between Cassandra and Jane) and carefully constructed. Shay felt so very realistic--she could be a girl I met at a bar here in New York very easily. All of her anxieties were relatable, and her banana smoothies really made her a person. I loved hating on Jody and feeling bad for hating on Jody since she was perfectly nice. <spoiler>I love how smart Shay got.</spoiler> It was a slow burner, but a good one.
This book was just ok for me. I was very annoyed with most of the characters, and especially the main character. I don't understand how she just continued on blissfully unaware of the goings-on behind-the-scenes. I liked the stories of the other characters, and I liked that we got backstory on them to figure out why they were the way they were, but overall there just wasn't enough for me to really like or dislike them. And there were a lot of POVs that made it kind of hard to keep up with.
