Shay Miller is unhappy with her life, her job -- everything. She wants to belong, to feel less like an outsider.
When she witnesses a young woman throw herself under a subway train, she is beyond shocked. She needs to know why she would do something that drastic. She attends a memorial service created by the girl's friends, and they welcome her with open arms. Soon she finds herself being cosseted by glamorous sisters, and moving in to the dead woman's apartment.
But things are not what they seem, and Shay may soon find that the price of friendship is way too high.
This is a riveting psychological thriller, destined to be talked about all year. Highly recommended.
You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks is a captivating thriller which had me guessing almost throughout the entire novel. Shay heads to the subway and feels she has a connection to a young woman who then throws herself in front of a subway train. Distraught, she goes to a memorial service for Amanda, the young woman and connect with Amanda's friends, Cassandra and Jane. Desperate for friends as her life is spiraling out of control, Shay latches onto these two sisters and finds that they are just the friends that she always wished she had. But...there's a reason they say, "Be careful what you wish for!"
Thank you to the authors, St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for and ARC of this enthralling novel in exchange for my honest opinion.
2.5 stars
I wish I had much to say about this, but I don't. I'm sure this will satisfy a lot of people as an entertaining thriller. Unfortunately, I didn't feel the plot was compelling and thought that Shay was sort of a weak, boring character. Usually thrillers have me desperate for answers, even if they're lacking otherwise, but I didn't have that experience here. It was readable enough for me to finish, but I think the biggest issue is that I didn't feel a sense of urgency; I felt sure Shay would get out of this mess and instead of worrying for her, I just waited to see what would happen. The only piece I really liked was the running theme of statistics. Shay is a big and I loved the data book she kept. Clearly I'm in the minority on this though, and it is great that the somewhat large cast is almost entirely female.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the e-ARC. All opinions are my own.
This is a hard one because I enjoyed reading this book, it’s very engaging and readable but I was a little let down. I did enjoy the writing just like I enjoyed the writing in The Wife Between Us, but this one didn’t hold up for me quite as well as that one did. I feel like some of the MC’s actions were weird and obviously only made for the plot progression. I had a couple other issues but I’m not going to spoil anything here. Overall I did enjoy my time reading this one and will definitely read the next one they put out.
You Are Not Alone is the third collaboration between Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. Shay is an anxious New Yorker who is working as a temp after losing her full-time job. She is obsessed with data and deals with her anxiety by grounding herself in numbers and logic. She's harboring feelings for her sweet roommate (who has a girlfriend), and her best friend is in a different stage of life (married with a baby)—leaving Shay lonely. When she witnesses a suicide in the subway, Shay becomes fascinated by (the dead woman) Amanda's life and the friends she left behind. Cassandra and Jane, two sisters who run a high-powered PR firm, notice Shay and take her under their wing. Cassandra and Jane have a tight-knit crew of friends—a group that once included Amanda, made up of smart, talented, and stylish women, exactly the kind of women Shay wants to befriend and emulate. The story that follows is told from several perspectives—Shay's, Amanda's, Cassandra and Jane's, and those of the other women in the group. It took me a few chapters to adjust to the writing style, but once I did, this was a great read. Chapters told from Cassandra and Jane's perspective (third person) feel stilted and distant, almost clinical. Although the style of these sections made it somewhat difficult to get into the story, it's a choice that makes sense as the story progresses, and it contributes to the novel's eerie tone. If you loved The Wife Between Us but An Anonymous Girl didn't quite hit the mark for you, there's a good chance the characters and twists in You Are Not Alone will have you just as compelled and disoriented as the duo's first novel.
Excellent book!! I’m loving this author (this being the 3rd book I’ve read by her/them). The characters were developed so that you actually felt like you were with the girls.
The only issues I came across were several typos towards the end but otherwise, I found The book very entertaining and hard to put down!
I had trouble getting into this book. There were a lot of characters to keep track of and I didn’t really connect with any of them. For me it was only a page turner because I was curious about what was going to happen. Thank you to net galley for an advanced readers copy.
Okay, so it took me a little while longer to read this than I anticipated. Not because I didn’t like it, I did, it was just a lot of information but some of it could have been left out.
By the end, I didn’t find myself caring about any of the characters or what happened to them and at that point I realized this book probably wasn’t going to do it for me.
It *is* a good page turner, if you liked the author’s previous work or maybe if you’ve never read their other books at all. Maybe that’s why I’m having trouble with it because I keep comparing it to those books and it’s just not up to par.
If you’re new to these two writers, skip the reviews and the blurb and just jump straight to the story without any preconceived thoughts about any of it and you’ll probably enjoy it.
-Not everything is as it seems.
-Or rather not everyone
-There are a lot of characters to keep track of, so get your mind ready.
-The statistic/data notes that the main character keeps is quite interesting. Maybe my favorite thing about the whole book.
Not sure about this one. I may come back to it later with more thoughts.
I received this book "You Are Not Alone" from NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own. Having read and loved "The Wife Between Us" and "An Anonymous Girl" I was excited to be picked for an advanced copy of You Are Not Alone. This was another great book! I did not want to put this book down and read it whenever I could. Awesome book! I like their writing style and can't wait for another book - soon I hope!
“You Are Not Alone” is the third collaboration between Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, and this novel lives up to all of the hype of it being one of the best psychological thrillers for this year (decade?).
Shay Miller has turned her passion for numbers and statistics into a career. But between jobs, with a best friend busy with a new baby, and living with a guy who she wishes could be something more, she is feeling at a loss. While working as a temp, she searches for a new gig while trying to avoid hanging out at the apartment whenever her roommate/crush is getting closer to his girlfriend. Waiting for the subway one morning, a young woman in a green polka dotted dress catches her eye. Before realizing what is about to happen, Shay witnesses the woman, Amanda, jump in front of an approaching train. Traumatized, Shay becomes obsessed with Amanda, who she was, and what led her to make this tragic choice.
Shay comprehends this loss by gathering statistics about this woman and as she does, her path crosses with Cassandra and Jane, gorgeous sisters who may have a connection to Amanda. Cassandra and Jane lead a group of women who are strong and assertive, characteristics Shay would like to embody.
In Shay's obsessive search for more information (data!) about this woman, she comes into contact with this Cassandra and Jane’s group. Shay would love to have friends like these women and after Cassandra and Jane meet and embrace Shay, for the first time she feels like she could belong. Good things start happening for Shay, and Shay begins feeling confident and strong with their embrace of friendship.
If you are expecting thing to work well for Shay long term, then you have never read a Hendricks/Pekkanen novel. Without resorting to predictability, Shay’s relationship with Cassandra and Jane send the reader on a turbulent journey; just when you expect the novel to resolve itself, the authors plan a few final twists.
I'd like to thank NetGalley for providing me an advanced copy for my unbiased review. "You Are Not Alone " is expected to be published by St. Martin’s Press on March 3, 2020.
I may have pumped and screamed when I was able to read this early. I have loved both of the previous books by Hendricks and Pekkanen, and I really wanted to know, could they do it again? The answer is yes, of course they can.
Having read their previous books, I knew that I shouldn't be as silly to believe it was as easy as what I was reading. I was ever watching for the elusive spoiler, and they did not disappoint with the twists and turns. In fact, they were so great that it's hard to review this book without giving anything away. Let's just suffice it to say you need to read this book, and go into it with as little as possible. You won't regret it.
A big thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for a copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I loved The Wife Between Us, so I was thrilled to get this ARC and not have to wait until March to read!
Saving my review until pub date! If you liked The Wife Between Us (obviously), Dear Sister, anything Riley Sager - this book is for you.
Shay’s life is slowly starting to fall apart when she sees Amanda throw herself in front of a moving subway train. She didn’t know Amanda, but suddenly she feels beyond connected to the woman she shared eye contact with as she died. After heading to the memorial for Amanda, Shay meets Charlotte and Jane, two good friends of Amanda’s. Charlotte and Jane quickly bring Shay into their lives, and all the sudden Shay’s life is making a turn for the better. Nothing could go wrong right?
I really loved this book. I had a hard time figuring out what was happening which is getting harder these days for me with thrillers. This dynamic duo certainly know how to write a kick butt thriller, and I can’t wait to see what they come up with next! My heart went out to Shay and I just wanted things to all work out, but I knew there was something sketchy happening! You will not regret picking this one up come March!
I read this in a sitting, ignoring all other personal obligations. Fantastic characters, fast-paced plot, and an ending that will have you cheering. Great for older teens, as well as adults!
These women write the most incredible, detailed, unusual stories! In this latest, Hendricks and Pekkanen have once again provided a glimpse behind the dark curtain of female "friendship" and offered up a thriller that is complex, populated by fabulously detailed characters full of charming menace - even (especially?) when they're at their most charming and least menacing... The authors have an uncanny knack for dissecting the insecurities that so many of us embody and finding a way to play with those fears and self-doubts until the reader doesn't know which end is up. It makes for delightful reads that travel a serpentine path toward resolution. There were a couple of twists I did not see coming - which always happens in their books - and the things I did see were still played out so subtly and well that I didn't mind congratulating myself for noticing them. If you like your thriller-mysteries intricate and thoughtful, a great place to start is with a Hendricks/Pekkanen!
The two authors of You Are Not Alone have written another great book. I like their style and ability to juggle characters and timelines that gives the reader more information without revealing what is to come. They are adept at describing the motivation behind the actions that gives a richness to the characters. The story held my interest from beginning to end.
I received an Advanced Reader's Copy from St Martin's Press. The opinions expressed are entirely my own.

Shay's life in New York City is not going well and when she witnesses a suicide in a subway station she wants to learn more about the woman because she worries that it could have been her. What she finds is more than she ever imagined, the woman's glamorous friends befriend her and Shay's life starts to turn around. But is it too good to be true? Are they really her friends or is there something else going on? A twisty story that kept me reading.
Such an interesting story. From the beginning until about 80% (maybe sooner)...I had no idea where this story was going. I enjoyed the characters and their relationships. I felt the main character was frustrating in the decisions she made...while her behavior can be partly understood because of the horrific experience of seeing someone kill themselves right in front of you...but her actions and decisions got to be a little much. But overall I was definitely engaged in the story.
This was an okay read. But only okay. I had a difficult time getting into the main plot of this book. The storyline was not a good flow for me. The characters uninteresting and the mystery sparse.
I am struggling to get through this book. I am not fully engaged and I am already on page 100. I am going to take a DNF on this one...everyone loves her books but I have yet to be wowed by this author. Perhaps I will find the will to finish and update this review. Until then, thank you net galley for the ARC anyways!
