I have read all of their books and I know what to expect from them. This was a predictable but enjoyable book but I wouldn't recommend it above other similar titles.
I'm an avid fan of the writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. I've read all of their books published to date and can honestly say that this one is my favourite!
I read this over two days laying in a lounge chair poolside on a pre-Covid vacation (oh, those were the days!) and it was such a fun and fast-paced read that I had a difficult time putting it down- even to get a fresh Pina Colada!! The characters are intriguing and well fleshed out and even though at times I wondered why the intelligent Shay Miller was doing decidedly stupid things, I forgave her because I could tell how much she wanted to fit in while also doing "the right thing". The Moore sisters were incredibly enticing. They were sinister yet alluring at the same time and I could definitely understand why the characters in the book were attracted to them and to their group.
There were a few twists and surprises in these pages that I didn't see coming, and I enjoyed tagging along for the ride. Well-written with an engaging plot, this novel is sure to attract new fans to the books of Pekkanen and Greer.

Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen show that you are not alone when you're surrounded by "friends":
Shay sees a tragedy happen right in front of her, a woman commits suicide. Shay cannot understand what happened and why this woman would do this. Shay finds herself thinking about it all the time and this leads her to attending the victims funeral. What Shay was not expecting was to meet her friends and for them to want to get to know her. Shay is a bit of a loner and has a hard time making friends, but it seems this tragedy has lead her to a new type of life. However, the friends have a different idea of what they would like to do with Shay's life.
This is the second book that I have read by this duo and I am extremely impressed. Although they are both in the psychological thrill genre, they had a completely different plot and story line compared (The other book I have read by them is Anonymous Girl). They do a have a bit of a formula surrounding the psychological aspects and manipulation of one of the characters, but this is achieved in different ways was still very interesting the second time around. I will also say that I wasn't sure which avenue Hendrick and Pekkanen were going to take at the beginning of the book when Shay first meets the Moore sisters. Honestly in a way Shay would have been an asset to their team, with all her data searching knowledge and abilities, if they did not need her for other reasons.
Shay is a puzzle of a character to me. There were times where I just could not follow her thought process at all, but I guess that is why she was so easy to manipulate throughout the book as all Shay really wants is to be accepted. You realize this through the continued stats that she writes in her notebook about what she is thinking about and more than one are about friends. I can't tell you how many times I wanted to reach through the book and shake her, tell her to think straight and to think her plans out. She truly was a perfect mark for the Moore sisters. She is a likeable character, just a frustrating one.
I liked how Hendricks and Pekkanen took the time to explain how each individual came to be a part of the Moore sisters team and how they would do anything at all to protect each other. It was also interesting to see how far back Moore sisters began their manipulation of everything around them. The whole team is pretty amazing and scary at the same time, when they set their mind to something, well when the Moore sisters set their minds to it, as they manipulate everyone.
There was a little bit of a twist at the end, but it was not Earth shattering or anything like that. I actually wished the book had ended differently, not so clean cut and predictable.
I really enjoyed this book by Hendricks and Pekkanen and I recommend I would recommend it to people who like psychological thrillers books that are not police or courtroom related. The storyline was interesting and it was interesting to watch all the manipulations play out. I look forward to see what they come up with next.
Enjoy!!!
You Are Not Alone was an amazing read with a suspenseful plot and a fantastic set of characters.
Shay Miller is down on her luck with no boyfriend and a dead-end job. One morning while waiting for the train, Shay witnesses a woman commit suicide by jumping in front of the train. After the event leaves her shaken, Shay falls back on her need for information and begins a search to find out who the woman was and why she committed suicide, but her investigation leads her down a path she may not be able to come back from.
You Are Not Alone, like the other books by this author duo, is a hard book to summarize without giving too much away. A simplistic summary would be that the book is about Shay, a woman who loves data and statistics, searching out information about the woman who committed suicide in front of her. After Shay finds out the woman’s identity and attends her memorial service, it brings her into the orbit of Cassandra and Jane Moore. The Moore sisters live a glamorous life with a close-knit group of friends that to someone lonely like Shay, look like they have everything she wants out of life. But the Moore sisters have many secrets and when they believe Shay knows more than she should, they draw her into their circle.
The book is told in alternating chapters from the points of view of Shay, the Moore sisters, and the various women in the Moore sisters’ friend group. The authors did a great job giving everyone a distinctive voice and I never found myself confused about whose chapter I was in. The chapters of the Moore sisters’s friend group in particular were interesting as they showed how much influence Cassandra and Jane truly have over everyone in their lives. Those chapters also allowed us to see how everyone became connected to the Moore sisters and what the group gets up to in its spare time.
This book hooked me from the start as it was such an intriguing premise and I was curious what direction the authors would take things. The plot is full of twists and turns you won’t see coming and there were numerous occasions that I was sure Shay wouldn’t be able to find her way out of the situation she was in. The books from these authors have an addictive quality to them and I find myself unable to put them down. You Are Not Alone was no exception and I highly recommend this book if you’re looking for a captivating, thrilling read.
You Are Not Alone is definitely my favorite book from this writer duo so far and I’m looking forward to seeing what they come up with next.
I am a big fan of this author duo, so I was excited to have the opportunity to read an ARC of this novel (Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley!). This book follows actuary Shaw Miller as she hopes to set out in life. She witnesses a traumatic event early into the novel that forever changes her life. From that point on, she is befriended by a powerful sister duo who start to bring her life to the next level. Suddenly she has opportunities and experiences she never would have had before. As time goes on, she starts to question their motives and we learn more of what has really happened. It was an interesting and fresh novel as it always is from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. I rated this book 4 stars. Also shout out for having a mathematician protagonist. As someone with an undergrad degree in math, I really enjoyed that bit.
The description for this one is really sparse. The main character is unhappy with her life until she meets two sisters who pull her into their world of perfection. The book itself is apparently on a ton of "most anticipated" lists. I picked it up because I loved The Wife Between Us by the same authors and I know I was drawn into An Anonymous Girl, even if the plot of that one has faded from my memory.
This book just wasn't for me. The plot is a slow burn, building up to a revelation of what's going on with the perfect sisters and their carefully chosen group of friends. I never managed to get more than mildly curious about their secrets.
Shay Miller is lonely. She doesn't have any real friends and she doesn't have a boyfriend. Even her job as a temp keeps her from forming real relationships at work. So when she witnesses a tragedy on the subway, she has nobody to talk to about her emotions. Watching that young woman jump in front of a train was a life-changing moment for Shay. She wanted to know more about Amanda Evinger and that led her to Amanda's friends, Cassandra and Jane. Cassandra and Jane are everything she ever hoped to find in friends. They are kind and supportive. They help Shay come out of her shell and become a whole new person. But then Shay starts to notice some things about her new friends that could seriously get her in trouble. Cassandra and Jane wouldn't purposefully get her in trouble with the law, would they?
You Are Not Alone is a fast-paced psychological thriller that will leave you on the edge of your seat. Shay Miller was a meek kind of character. You could feel her loneliness permeate off of the pages. I felt some serious empathy for her. The way she longed for friends was almost heartbreaking. The author tells the story from different perspectives. Mostly it is Shay and Cassandra and Jane telling the story, but Valerie, Daphne, and Stacey. Together, their viewpoints paint a picture of hurt, manipulative, desperate women. Shay starts to piece everything together and she starts to realize that maybe Cassandra and Jane are not as nice as they have led her to believe. Things spiral out of control to a pretty explosive conclusion. CLICK HERE FOR SPOILERS
Bottom Line - Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are quickly becoming the dynamic duo of psychological thrillers and once again they have written the "must-read book" of the year. I couldn't wait to get my hands on You Are Not Alone and I couldn't put it down once I got started.

You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is the second book that I have read by them and wow oh wow did this one not disappoint. They have the talent of drawing you in right at the beginning and drag you along for such a great ride. I love how you start to think what is going to happen to then find out something completely different. Overall, I loved this book and would highly recommend it to others.
You Are Not Alone is stellar psychological fiction. I was not expecting the twists and turns that make this story a nail biter. I was on the edge of my seat wondering just how things would turn out for Shay. I don’t want to give anything away! I suggest going in blind and letting the story take you on a journey.
If you’ve loved the previous work by this duo, you will love You Are Not Alone.
What I liked: You Are Not Alone was extremely tense for me. The way the authors unfold the story kept me on the edge of my seat with worry and sympathy for Shay. I couldn't get to the end quickly enough.
What I didn't like: This is complex because what I didn't like did help fortify what was at stake for Shay. She finds herself in a destructive relationship, full of manipulation from some downright terrible people. Their actions made me feel sick. But without those acts, we could not have seen Shay's journey forward. Some of the situations were relatively over the top, and Shay was too trusting but, that added to the suspense. Ultimately, I still needed to find out where Shay wound up at the end.
Overall this book was engaging. I recommend You Are Not Alone for those who like a mystery to solve.
Thank you NetGalley, St. Martin's Press and Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen on the ARC to review. I have read these authors before, and they did not disappoint. I was interested from the start. I am happy that the young lady in this story prevailed. It is so easy to get swept up with new people you meet. What a devilish group these women were. Definitely, was surprised by the ending. Great read, looking forward to more.
Hendricks and Pekkanen are quickly becoming two of my few authors.
They write great characters...even unlikeable ones. The Moore Sisters and their posse make the women killers on the ID channel look like amateurs.
The book is well-written and captured my attention quickly.
For a lot of us—in this case, female, adult singletons who’ve moved to some place from somewhere else—daily life isn’t only about the usual challenges of work (or looking for work), feeding ourselves, doing laundry, paying bills, working out, and trying to fit some kind of fun in somehow, but it’s also a matter of… trying to survive. And often, feeling entirely alone in that very singular pursuit.
In writing duo Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen’s latest, You Are Not Alone, Shay Miller is doing exactly that… while sharing an apartment with someone she has feelings for—who’s engaged to someone else. She is sporadically temping for work. And her prospects for anything resembling “fun” are… well, she can barely remember what that even is.
Until one day, when a chance encounter with two women, Cassandra and Jane—sisters of similar age to her, who are vibrant, beautiful, captivating, and (what??) apparently utterly charmed by Shay—changes everything. If these fabulous, successful women could really like nice, mild-mannered her, then she must be kind of okay. Suddenly, she feels positive about herself, and life in general: the days seem brighter, people she passes on the street friendlier, and her outlook on the future is definitely tinted some shade of rosy-gold.
The key, Shay knows, is her friendship with Cassandra and Jane. She would do almost anything to impress and keep these magnetic new friends, and with that in mind, becomes obsessed with doing whatever they want… from making changes to her appearance, her job, finding a new place to live, and trying online dating, she does it all, at the sisters’ urging.
But, as with most highs, once that first crazy intensity starts to wear off, Shay begins to feel doubts and worries nudging their way into her bliss. Something doesn’t feel right… and when she wakes up one morning to find herself wanted by the police—regarding a murder(!!)—she’s determined to figure out if it’s all part of a horrible misunderstanding… or if some of the odd coincidences she’s been noticing might actually be much more sinister in nature.

With a narrative that goes back and forth between different POVs and different time periods, You Are Not Alone is a book that requires you to pay attention rather than speeding right through it. (I mean, you could, but you’d be way more apt to miss those little details and nuggets that come back later, which wouldn’t be nearly so much fun.) A lot of people don’t enjoy this style of disjointed storytelling, but if, like me, you really do, then You Are Not Alone will definitely be your jam.
Hendricks and Pekkanen also do a bang-up job of ramping up the suspense here. There’s never a dull chapter, no “why-on-earth-did-they-write-that?” passages to endure; it’s a tight, finely-crafted, “OMG-this-could-all-totally-happen-to-me-or-someone-I-know” tale, that races with the speed of a fast-moving train toward its final destination… and oh, how you’re gonna want to get there. Highly recommended!!

Poor Shay. She wants so much to be happy but her life just isn’t co-operating. She’s in love with her housemate, who’s in love with his girlfriend. She has a job that is at best dead-end. No real friends, no success, no confidence. Until one day she witnesses a horrific event, and then, through a bizarre set of circumstances, finds herself drawn into the lives of two sisters, Cassandra and Jane. And her life begins to get better and better. Until it doesn’t.
This is another great page-turner from Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen. The characters are really well-drawn but I honestly couldn’t bear to have any of them as friends. This is part of the authors’ genius - to make me want to find out about all these people that I wouldn’t have in my life, and to want to know what happens to them. The plot is sufficiently convoluted and the twists really well hidden that I never saw them coming.
My favorite of theirs is still The Wife Between Us, but this comes a close second. And I can’t wait for the next one.
My thanks to NetGallery, St. Martin’s Press and the authors for a copy to review.
You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks is psychological fiction. Although the book was well-written, I didn’t care for the subject matter. A group of girls took advantage of lonely, single, girls and had no qualms about killing people that they thought should be punished. Very scary book. Thank you to Net Galley for an advanced reader’s copy.
Shay Miller wants to find love, but it eludes her. She wants to be fulfilled, but her job is a dead end. She wants to belong, but her life is increasingly lonely.
Until Shay meets the Moore sisters. Cassandra and Jane live a life of glamorous perfection, and always get what they desire. When they invite Shay into their circle, everything seems to get better.
Shay would die for them to like her.
She may have to.
When it comes to thrillers, I want a book that I go to sleep reading and reach for as soon as I wake up in the morning, just to find out what happens. You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen is a book that kept me up late at night, turning pages, but overall, it's execution fell a little short. I enjoyed the revelations, but I felt like there were too many coincidences to make the story believable. I also wish the characters were not so one-dimensional. That said, it kept me reading, and I enjoyed that part of the journey.
An intriguing suspense novel! Hendricks and Pekkanen have the reader on the edge of the seats yet again!
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in return for an honest review.
These two authors create amazing psychological thrillers together, and this third book of theirs is no exception.
Shay Miller feels lost in her own life, until she witnesses a traumatic tragedy. Unable to shake what she has seen, Shay finds herself falling into the inner circle of Cassandra and Jane Moore, two glamorous sisters who seem to make all the pieces of Shay's life fall into place. That is, if Shay's alive long enough to enjoy her new life.
This book constantly kept me guessing, gasping out loud in surprise, and frantically flipping pages to find out what was going to happen next. I highly recommend this read.
I really enjoyed The Wife Between Us by these authors and was looking forward to diving into their latest. I wouldn't rate this offering as high. It took me a while to get all the characters straight and to care what happened to the protagonist. Ultimately worth the trip but if I had to choose I'd read either of their two earlier novels instead.
