This is a thrilling thriller about "friendships" gone wrong. The old adage is true...keep your friends close, and your enemies even closer! Author, Greer Hendricks, does not disappoint!
Shay is lonely and needy. On her way to her temp job, she witnesses a suicide. She becomes unhinged. She becomes somewhat obsessed with the victim. Enter the Moore sisters and their band of merry women. As Robin Hood would steal, this group wants to teach lessons in a profound way. Vigilante justice with crazy thrown in.
Hendricks and Pekkanen are masters of the dark and devious female character. This is a fun story to read. If you have read and enjoyed previous novels this should appeal to you also.
Thanks to Net Galley and St. Martin’s Press for this ARC!
I did not read reviews, I basically went into this one cold and I am glad I did. Once I started this book, I did not stop until I finished it. I loved the character of Shay Miller and her fascination with data. Her books where she wrote information were one of the things that got her into the situation she found herself in. The twists in this story were fast and furious, but had me hooked. It was easy to see how Shay, the shy, quiet woman who did not have family, friends or a support network could get sucked in by the beautiful and flamboyant Moore sisters. The network they had and how they used it was remarkable, money talks. The story is told from multiple POVs, but most is from Shay. It takes awhile for her to realize all is not as it seems, but is it too late? This is an intriguing and twisted tale that reminds us to be careful what we wish for. I definitely recommend this one to those who enjoy a twisty thriller.
This novel very much runs in the same vein as previous novels from this writing duo. Psychological warfare is a certain hallmark of their books. In this story, Shay Miller is 31, living in New York and going nowhere. She is living in an apartment, with a male friend who she is secretly in love with, but who has a girlfriend. She is between jobs, and has no real friends to speak of. On a routine day, waiting for the train, Shay is witness to the death of a young woman who jumps in front of a train. Unable to recover from the trauma, Shay hopes to close this chapter of her life by learning about this train jumper. After learning of her identity she makes trips by the woman’s apartment, and goes by her Memorial service. It is here that she comes across two sisters, Jane and Cassandra. Glamorous and put together these women are everything Shay hopes to be but isn’t. Wooed by their generous nature, Shay allows herself to be manipulated, and for a time it seems like her life undergoes some radical improvements. Things don’t go well for long, and before Shay is aware of the scheme, the dubious sisters have managed to frame her for a homicide committed several months prior. The nefarious sisters are one step ahead of Shay at every turn, and seem willing to offer Shay up in sacrifice. For me Shay is a very relatable character. Hendricks and Pekkanen are masters of the dark and devious female character. This is a fun story to read, though I think An Anonymous Girl is a stronger novel overall. If you have read and enjoyed previous novels this should appeal to you also. Review posted to Goodreads, Amazon, Facebook, and LibraryThing.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen are quickly becoming my favorite authors. Every book I have read of theirs is amazing.
This book had me at the edge of my seat and it was impossible to put down. I ended up finishing it in one day.
Desperately awaiting their next book!
This is decent and twisty and I always enjoy their stuff. It's a bit less exciting and original than their other volumes and they writing was a bit heavy on description in an unnecessary way in the beginning.
You Are Not Alone begins with Shay Miller, a young woman living in New York City. She’s working a dead-end temp job, and seems to be a constant third wheel when her roommate brings home a serious new girlfriend. She’s looking for direction in her life and hoping things will get better for her, when one day, she witnesses a tragic incident on the subway platform.
Meanwhile, Cassandra and Jane are two powerful women who are super successful and run their own busy, high-powered public relations firm. They seemingly have it all together, and they definitely have nothing in common with Shay. That is, until the said tragic event Shay witnesses happens, which bring the women together. Shay is thrilled and grateful for her new friendships…until strange things begin happening. Unwittingly, Shay begins to infiltrate a dead woman’s life- her friendships, her apartment, not to mention the chances that begin to occur. Things are looking better for Shay, but why? Do these two women really want to be friends with Shay, or is there something nefarious going on?? (*Spoiler alert- There’s definitely some shadiness going on.*)
This book had lots of twists and turns and chilling moments, and I was definitely surprised by some of the truths uncovered throughout the story. I could not put this down, and found myself sneaking in pages throughout my day. I thought this one was super unique and well-written, and I truly enjoyed it to the very end.
4 out of 5 stars for You Are Not Alone by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, which was released on March 3rd, 2020, and is available for purchase here.
I’d like to extend a big thank you to the authors, NetGalley, and St. Martin’s Press for providing me an advance copy of this title. All opinions are completely my own.
This book was definitely a true psychological thriller. With a slow build in the beginning, the payoff was definitely worth investing in the story. I did not see where this book was headed for a long time and was caught off guard several times, which I love in a thriller. Overall, this was a really fun thriller, especially for this summer.
Probably a first? Statistical thriller? Loved the little stats and facts incorporated through You are Not Alone. It must have been a fun book to research! Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen can do no wrong (I say this every time, sorry) and I'm always amazed at the characters they come up with for their books. I feel like this was somehow darker than previous books - possibly because the main character, Shay, is so lonely and these quarantine days are lonely times. And this was definitely another novel by this duo where I was left stumped as to where they were going to take me. For some reason this time, I felt a little impatient with the plot - even toward the end I was still wondering what the heck was going to happen and sometimes as a reader you want to be afforded more insight somehow. Still, would recommend it. A great summer break book. 3.5 stars
I really liked this book. It was full of twists. None of the characters were likeable but the plot was easy to digest and it made you want to keep turning to read what happens next.
Having read all of Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's collaborations, I knew I was in for a suspenseful thrill ride when I picked up their third novel, You Are Not Alone. I consider this to be their best work yet. With a taut, original storyline and danger lurking around every corner, I couldn't stop reading this riveting book.
Shay Miller is a woman down on her luck. A self-described data nerd, she can't seem to find a job that makes good use of her talents, nor do the numbers add up in her life when it comes to love and friendship. Her life takes an interesting, and rather unfortunate, turn for the worse, however, when she witnesses a woman commit suicide by jumping in front of a New York City subway. Shay soon finds herself obsessed with this woman and her past, which brings her into the lives of the Moore sisters.
Cassandra and Jane Moore are everything that Shay is not. Glossy and polished with glitzy PR jobs and a large circle of friends, these women are killing it in life, and Shay can't help but feel inferior. At the same time, Shay is inexplicably drawn to the Moore sisters and accepts the attention they shower on her; however, Shay doesn't know Cassandra and Jane's backstory, and why they have taken such a sudden interest in an ingénue woman like herself. Little does she know, Shay is just the woman they were looking for.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen's You Are Not Alone is a unique, refreshing read for anyone who loves the women's suspense genre, but has grown bored with the typical "woman dies with a twist" plot. Yes, this book does feature the death of a woman, and there is a plot twist, but the story is not formulaic and these characters provide something new to the genre. This unsettling book is easy to get absorbed in as Hendricks and Pekkanen slowly peel back the layers revealing that there is so much more lurking in the depths of this story than what you see at the surface.
Thank you to NetGalley and St. Martin's Press for an ARC of this novel in exchange for an honest review.
I've been excited to read this book since I first found out about it. I'm a fan of Sarah Pekkaken's non-thriller fiction, and I loved their first book, The Wife Between Us. That being said, I enjoyed You Are Not Alone even more.
I was extremely engrossed in the story, and I found myself thinking about the characters even when I wasn't reading.
Similar to The Wife Between Us, the chapters switch characters and even time periods. You Are Not Alone had a lot more characters, so it was confusing at first until I got in the groove and everything settled. In the beginning, you hear from everyone, but the second half mostly flips between the main protagonist, Shay, Cassandra and Jane, and some backstory from Amanda.
Another potentially confusing part was some of Cassandra and Jane's friends had multiple aliases. So that was tough to keep track. I think if I read it a second time, I'll pick up on a whole lot more.
The story flowed all over the place (in a good way) that I couldn't even predict what was going to happen. I was so shocked by the ending, my heart was racing and I was wide awake after finishing the book at 2AM.
This was an interesting choice for me during COVID-19 quarantine. Since this book is set in New York City, following some socialites, it made me miss the world before.
*Thank you to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the ARC, for which I have given an honest and unbiased review*
Shay Miller’s life is in a rut. It seems to get worse after that terrible night when she witnessed a horrible accident. Things all begin to change when she meets Jane & Cassandra Moore. The sisters seem to be kind and welcome Shay into their group of friends. Shay is thrilled that her life is finally turning around. But how long can a good thing really last? Why exactly did The Moore Sister welcome Shay so quickly? This book was great! I’m a big fan of Greer Hendricks & Sarah Pekkanen’s books and this one did not disappoint.
Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen have written another great psychological thriller. You Are Not Alone ticks all the boxes: interesting characters, an original plot, a fast pace and an unpredictable ending. Shay Miller is a young New York woman whose life is at a crossroads: the man she loves is in love with someone else, she has a dead-end job, she needs to find a new home and she is lonely. Circumstances bring her to the attention of the Moore sisters, Cassandra and Jane, two refined and beautiful women who seem to have everything that is missing in Shay’s life. Their new friendship brings Shay into their circle and her life changes in all aspects. But all may not be as it seems. This has been a fascinating and satisfying read and I highly recommend it to anyone who enjoys being surprised and entertained by what they read. Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
When I pick up a book co-authored by Greer Hendricks and Sarah Pekkanen, I know I'm in for a fun ride. At first I had some trouble getting into this book, I think due to the multiple points of view going on. However, once Shay's life became intertwined with the Moore sisters the book picked up speed and in the end was a good, twisty tale of suspense.
Shay is lonely and would give anything to have a group of friend. She lives wit a male roommate that she has a crush on, but he has a girlfriend and they are planning to move in together leaving Shay looking for a new house. This means Shay is homeless, friendless, and jobless. While shay is waiting for a train, she witnesses a young woman commit suicide by jumping in front of a train. Shay beings working with the police department and wants to learn more about who this woman, Amanda, was. She becomes involved in Amanda’s life, even becoming friends with her friends against the lead detective’s warnings. But what determines where the line is drawn? How far will Shay go to keep these women as her friends?
Definitely another great novel by these authors! This is a novel of suspense and filled with such realistic drama! I could see how this could actually unfold in someone's life. Wanting to know how it ended kept me reading and meant I finished the book within a couple of days!
This book was a crazy ride. Who do you trust? Is someone setting you up? And are these people seriously your friends? It had me on the edge of my seat!
These two can weave a story like no one else. They never disappoint with their intricate story telling and complex characters. I’ve been fortunate to have the opportunity to read all of their works so far, and I think this one is my favorite. I highly recommend if you’re looking for a story to pull you in and never let you go.
Definitely a lot of twists and turns in this story. I could not relate to Shay and her need to be friends with these ladies. I found her too needy and how she stalks all of those who were in Amanda’s life rather creepy. I found the story a little too long but did enjoy the ending.
