I received an eARC of The Finders by Jeffrey B. Burton from St. Martin's Press and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!
I give this book 5 stars! This was my first book by this author. I highly recommend this fast-paced start of a new series for anyone who loves a good mystery, and dogs of course! It kept me engaged from start to finish and I can't wait for the next book in this series!
This has been such an entertaining read! It's been hard to put it down.
I must confess that the golden retriever on the cover got my total attention, so that's how I picked it up. If the story has dogs (or any other animals) I'm all in! 😍
The story is fast-paced and quite original, so once you pick up this book it turns really difficult to keep going with your daily tasks. It's those kind of books you can read in one sit.
Sue, the German shepard; Delta Dawn and Maggie May, the short-haired farm collies; and Vira, the especial Golden retriever are so lovely, smart, and brave! They totally steal the show.
The character's witty dialogues, especially Reid's, make the story even more enjoyable.
I totally recommend it. Dog lover or not, I'm sure you're going to enjoy it... and fall in love with these charming four-legged team.

For this Early Read..
First I would like to thank NetGalley and St Martin’s Press for giving me this ebook to read. Second I would like to tell people that no dog dies in the book. You may say that is a spoiler but if you are like many people I know you don’t want to read a book where this happens. I want people to know this is a good book for dog lovers to read. The second I saw the cover I wanted to read it as I love dogs, I have three adopted rescue dogs. The cover did not disappoint as the book was excellent with some amazing events involving the dogs. There were some great human characters and the canine characters were even better. I loved how each dog had such a Unique personality and how the author wove the dogs into many of the scenes in the book. This made the book seem more realistic as anyone that lives with dogs knows the little tricks they have and adding that to a serious conversation gave it a fun twist. There is a great storyline with lots of action and suspense. The author did a great job of creating each character and I easily liked them, especially Mason. None of the characters were far fetched or fake going the story more credibility. I laughed more than a few times at some of the dogs shenanigans and at Mason’s awkwardness with women. The book flowed easily from one chapter to the next and I didn’t want to put it down, reading late into the night to finish it. There was excitement, suspense, action and a twist I didn’t see coming. A great all round book that should appeal to many readers, especially those who love dogs.
Great read for dog lovers as well as fans of detective fiction. The author has created likable characters (both human and canine) along with a couple of evil ones, in a way that is believable yet entertaining. It’s unusual to discover a story about a serial killer that’s a story about genuine love of animals as well.
Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Mace is a dog trainer who adopts a Golden Retriever puppy, Vira, who he trains to be a cadaver dog. She ends up being a superstar at not just that but at sniffing out murderers too and she, along with Mace, and police woman, Kippy Gimm, take down a serial killer.
I had never heard of this author but was sent a widget from the publisher based on the fact that I had requested "Muzzled" by David Rosenfelt, another dog book. Since I a sucker for hero dog, I went for it and am glad I did. I don't love serial killer books and if not for the dog element, this would have been a 3 star, but the awesome dog made it a 4. I liked Mace and Kippy and would probably give the next in this series a shot.
Well written, engaging and page turning mystery with some great twists. Action, suspense and some humour made for a thoroughly enjoyable read.
Mason (Mace) Reid is a dog trainer, specializing in cadaver dogs. He gets a new Golden Retriever puppy, Vira, and she is something special. When Mace and Vira help the Chicago PD hunt a serial killer they end up in the crosshairs of another killer.
Well developed and interesting characters. I loved seeing the bond between Mace and his crew of dogs and their different personalities. I hope there are many more books in this series.
Thank you Netgalley, St. Martin's Press Minotaur Books for this ARC.
The finders is an intriguing story about cadaver dogs and how they work. This hero dog has extra powers. Interesting story dealing with serial killers. Lots of twist that will keep you guessing. The plus is the animals will entertain you.
The Finders is the first book in a new series and what a great start to the series!
Mace trains cadaver dogs and his new dog Vira is just one of the three he owns, all named after songs.
Mace and Vira who seems to have special skills, are out to track down a serial killer that is at large.
I don't want to give anything away about the story though it is tempting. Twists and turns , mystery, thriller this book has it all.
I will be first in line for the second book in the series !!
Now to check out Jeffrey Burton's other books, I am now a big fan!!
Thanks to Net Galley, St Martin's Press, Minotaur Books for the privilege of reading a wonderful start to a new series in The Finders.
A fast paced, quick read with great character development and unexpected twists. I especially liked the the way the author described the various dog behaviors using humorous human analogies. Great pick for mystery lovers and dog lovers. Can't wait for the next book in the series. Highly Recommended
Mason Reid lives in a suburb of Chicago, and trains cadaver dogs -- dogs that hunt for dead bodies. He adopts a a golden retriever that he names Vira, and when he begins training her as a cadaver dog, he comes to realize just how special the newest addition to his family truly is. Vira not only finds the body, but traces the scent back to the person who dumped it.
Reid and his prize pup are tasked by Chicago police officer Kippy Grimm to help with a murder case that looks like a serial killer operating in the area. It doesn't take much time for the killer to focus his attention on Mace and his beloved Vira, and they need to stop him before time runs out.
This is the beginning of a new series for Burton, and it's a very promising debut. Dog lovers -- and everyone else -- will love Vira and her human. Highly recommended!
3.5 stars
I enjoyed this book, but not as much as I had hoped. I’m a sucker for dogs, so that immediately grabbed my attention. Throw in a serial killer and I’m sold...but I wasn’t 100% sold on this story. I actually enjoyed the interactions between Reid, Kippy, and the dogs the most. Those parts seemed to flow better and draw me in more, whereas the parts with the serial killer and other police officers jumped around a lot and used a lot of technical terms and acronyms that were never elaborated on or explained. That, for me, kind of turned me off from the story.
While I love thrillers, I don’t typically read a lot of police/detective books, so I think someone who reads that genre would enjoy this more than I did.

I really wanted to like this book. After all, it’s about a super smart golden retriever specializing in human remains detection. That being said I think the author was trying too hard to be hip, cute, clever—it just didn’t work for me.
Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for an early copy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
I love dogs so naturally I was drawn to the cover and the description of this book! I really enjoyed how the author described each of Mace's dogs' personalities (especially Sue, the male German Shepherd!).The author also did a great job with the main characters - Mace has HRD detection dogs and that's how he meets Kippy (a police officer). Kippy rescued Mace's most recent dog, Vira, while on a call. Vira's exceptional "skills" give this book a hint of a Science Fiction feel to go with the mystery/crime feel. Overall, the story was interesting and kept my attention. I look forward to the next book in the series on to see what happens with Kippy's and Mace's relationship!
Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for providing an advanced copy of the book.
Big thank you to NetGalley and St.Martins Press for the ARC of this fantastic book. This is a new author to me but I am impressed. The Finders is also the first book in this series "Mace Reid K-9 Mysteries". I was drawn to the book first by the cover. Okay, I am a sucker for dogs. But also by the description and I was not disappointed. From the first page, I didn't want to stop reading. Now I can't wait to read more in the series.
This book is a fantastic thriller for dog lovers. The Finders follows the relationship between a cadaver dog and his owner/trainer as they stumble upon a serial killer's victim. And the repercussions that ensue as they follow the clues to identify killer, inadvertently attracting the attention of another killer. The book is well paced and engaging. The characters are well thought out.and provide just the right amount of humor to keep the book fun. However, Reid's dog obsession and personification of the dogs could be turned down a bit.
The cover of the book was what piqued my interest. Then I read the blurb, and was quite intrigued. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher, I got the chance to read the book and didn't regret it!
The story revolves around Mason Reid and his cadaver dogs, that is, dogs trained to search for human remains in police investigations. The story was told from different points of view. The pace was good, kept me constantly interested. The serial killer's story line successfully crept me out, and his reveal at the end was quite a surprise. This was the first installment in the series, and I hope there will be more. I would recommend this book for fans of mystery fiction, especially if you like dogs.
The Finders (Jeffery B. Burton) is book 1 of a series "A Mace Reid K9 Mystery". Having finished book 1 I sincerely hope Mr Burton writes fast as I'm ready for book 2. If you like dogs, mysteries, and lots of edge of your seat moments you'll love this story as much as I do. I want to thank Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for my early copy to review.
Jeffrey B. Burton’s THE FINDERS is a strong start to the Mace Reid K-9 Mystery series, centering around a canine trainer who specializes in cadaver detection dogs and the cases they help investigate and hopefully, solve.
Mace Reid may have lost his marriage to divorce, but he has gained Vira, a retriever with an uncanny ability to sniff out danger, death and more.
A fabulous read for dog lovers, mystery lovers and anyone who wants an entertaining read that provides both an escape and a chance to use one’s own sleuthing abilities right alongside some wonderfully developed characters, especially the dogs! No over-the-top heroics, completely believable and realistic characters and a plot that holds humor, heart and enough twists to fly along!
I received a complimentary ARC edition from Minotaur Books! This is my honest and voluntary review.
This is first in a series by the author. I found it to be engaging and wirtten in a style that is fast paced making it a the quick read (read in less than two days). The main character trains cadaver dogs and works with the police to find dead bodies. At times, the dogs are smarter than he is. I personally will be looking for future books by this author.
I received a free Kindle copy of this book courtesy of NetGalley and the publisher with the understanding that I would post a review on Net Galley, Goodreads, Amazon and my nonfiction book review blog. I also posted it to my Facebook page.
