This was a quick read. One thing that bothered me is that I felt the characters were all reduced to stereotypes. I didn't find the actions of any of them believable. Because I didn't like the characters, I felt less invested in the story and didn't care about all that bad things that befell them in the plot. I wasn't really rooting for the wronged main character in the end. However, the plot moves along swiftly with a lot of twists and turns. If you care more about a book's action and not the characters, or you like deceptive characters, you will enjoy this book.
I love that locked room style mysteries are having their new day. For fans of Lucy Foley and Agatha Christie alike, The Vacation is the perfect getaway from reality. A group of friends and their families take a much-needed vacation to catch up and relax. What follows is the story of what happens when friends and lovers keep secrets buried. Which two are having a secret affair? Which of the children are really up to no good? Who has a motive for murder? No holds barred and no punches pulled. This one is a fun thriller you won’t put down.
Wow! First off, I finished this book in TWO days. Yup, THAT good! It grabbed me from the beginning. At first, I was hesitant because I thought how could a book stretch out which of the three women might be having an affair with Kate’s husband? Well well well, the author truly knows what he’s doing. This book was so much more than that. Four families come together for a vacation when Kate discovers the incriminating texts on her husbands phone. After that, she is paranoid and hesitant to trust anyone, even her own husband. No spoilers but this book was reminiscent of Big Little Lies and just as good! I kept talking to myself out loud saying “it’s gotta be her! No wait, it’s her.” And by the end of the book, I didn’t see it coming! AT ALL. This book was truly a rollercoaster in the BEST way. Clear your schedule for this one!
Four college friends meet up years after graduation. They meet with their families in a private villa in the south of France. While they tried to stay close over the years, this is the first time that all immediate family members are included. Kate, the main character, finds an interesting text on her husbands phone and suspects the worst. She believes it is one of her college roommates. This weekly vacation focuses on the events that end up with a tragedy.
I like how the author intertwines all the characters throughout the novel. Her leads keep you guessing the entire time. Is Kate's husband having an affair? What is each roommate hiding from their personal lives?
You need to read to the end before all the facts are laid out for you. Good mystery book for easy summer reading.
This book was a good, suspenseful and unpredictable, a real page turner. Early on I thought I had everything figured out but the end totally surprised me.
Buckle up...you are in for a thrilling twisty ride with this read! Four friends from college embark on a Mediterranean vacation with their families and the thrill begins. Kate reads text messages on her husband’s phone that cause her to assume her husband is having an affair with one of her three best friends. Everyone has secrets and many intersect as the plot thickens. Loved the family dynamics angle and thought they were realistic. Told by multiple narrators, the pace is non-stop and the secrets are slowly revealed. I could not put it down. All in all, this book will definitely be a blockbuster! I can already see a movie in its future. Job well done! Many many thanks to T. M. Logan, St. Martin’s Press, and NetGalley for affording me the opportunity to read an arc of this amazing thriller to be published in July. Pre order this one and you won’t be disappointed.
This book is a good quick summer read. It starts off kinda slow but it’s still enjoyable and the second half goes really fast. There are some good twists and turns- I had a couple predictions that were right and some that I was not expecting. I do still have some questions though. I wasn’t a fan of any character except one (I won’t say who because I don’t want to ruin anything) some people need to grow a back bone, some belong in the looney bin and a lot belong in anger management. I just don’t see a bunch of adults acting this way. Overall it’s a good book, it’s not a thriller but there is fair amount of suspense and mystery.
I received a free copy from NetGalley. Three families, plus an extra friend, vacation together. But nothing is what it seems and everyone has secrets and some of them don't even like each other. If you trust your "best" friends that little, it might be time for new friends. I had difficulty relating to this one and finding it believable.
Intensely thrilling and one of a kind. This book was hard to put down and I barely did until the last page was read. Love this author so much and I can’t wait to see what she writes next.
A group of best friends and their families take a celebratory vacation together on the Mediterranean. A beautiful, expensive house, overlooking gorgeous views should make this a trip to remember. And it will be. Memorable trip... but not for the reasons they expect.
The story focuses on Kate, who realizes that her husband is having an affair with someone on the resort. This someone, being one of her longtime best friends, each of whom she has wronged in some way in the past. It’s hard to believe that someone she trusts can betray her in this way... but she will get to the bottom of it, even if she has to set a trap. What ensues is plenty of family drama, a bit of mystery, and a twisty thriller. And eventually a who done it when someone ends up dead.
I was looking forward to reading this book since I first read the back cover, and it didn’t disappoint. The story was twisty enough to keep me engaged, and full of captivating characters. I may think twice before planning family vacations with friends.
The Vacation is the latest psychological thriller from T. M. Logan. Mr Logan gives us most of the story through the eyes of our heroine with an occasional chapter told by one of the other characters. This story will keep the reader guessing and every time you think you know where it's headed Mr Logan sends us down a different path. I want to thank Net Galley and St. Martin's Press for an early copy to review.
When a woman goes on vacation with her three best friends and their families, she makes a startling discovery that threatens her marriage. As she tries to figure out the details of the secret, she fights to stay calm. Soon, however, she realizes she’s not the only one with problems or secrets. Author T.M. Logan is back with another thriller in the fun and surprising novel The Vacation.
Kate Connelly can’t believe it, but she’s finally on vacation with her three best friends, Izzy, Rowan, and Jennifer. The four went to university and lived together; at one time, they made it a point to travel together every year too, just the four of them. No husbands, no children, no jobs to worry about.
But then the year Rowan got pregnant with her daughter, Odette, the trip didn’t make sense. That break caused a five-year gap, which the friends have finally gotten to breach. So that no one felt left out, they’ve decided to bring their families along too. It’s not a girls’ weekend away, but at least they get to see each other.
Rowan finds them a picturesque home in the tiny French village of Autignac, and the four families arrive ready to enjoy the countryside for a full week. Hours within arriving, though, Kate makes a horrible discovery. A woman has been texting her husband, Sean, and it sounds like they’re having an affair. Worse: the woman says she wants to sort things out with Sean during the week in France.
As a crime data analyst, Kate’s trained to examine facts and right now the facts are telling her that one of her best friends has been sleeping with the man she thought was the love of her life. But who could it be? Throughout the week, Kate recounts reasons why each of the women might hold a grudge against her. She’s hurt all of them, albeit indirectly, in some way or the other. Would Izzy, Rowan, or Jennifer stoop to this level?
In the meantime, Kate’s noticed that something isn’t right with her daughter, Lucy. True, she’s a teenager, and teens are notoriously glued to their technology. But now that they’re not in the rat race of their normal lives, Kate realizes that Lucy’s been acting in strange ways for a while now. Something isn’t making sense.
She tries to ignore her misgivings, but it burns her blood that Sean would cheat on her. Also, the vacation isn’t turning out to be as ideal as anyone hoped. Jennifer’s style of helicopter parenting gets dialed up to a loud pitch. Rowan seems more inclined to let her young daughter, Odette, get away with everything and everything, even as her husband, Russ, complains that she isn’t parenting Odette. Izzy seems the most content with her life as a single person, but then she confides in Kate that she isn’t exactly available anymore. Could that mean that Izzy is guilty of betrayal?
All Kate knows is that this vacation was supposed to help her reset with her friends, and instead it’s turning into one mini disaster after another. Never mind that it’s easier to focus on the mini disasters so she can ignore the one looming over her: the end of her marriage.
Author T.M. Logan keeps the story moving at a good pace. He gives Kate the opportunity to take the lead in solving her own problems. After careful deliberation, she confronts Sean about the purported affair. When she receives vague answers, she doesn’t give up.
Logan uses all of the classic genre devices to great effect, and thriller lovers will grin with glee by the end. In particular, a funeral scene will begin with readers believing one possible conclusion to the story but will lead them into another direction altogether. While it comes towards the end of the book, it’s worth waiting for.
At times the point of view shifts to one or the other characters, but this is Kate’s story from start to finish. Despite staying in her head for most of the book, Logan conveys all the necessary elements of the plot with ease. He’ll have readers guessing all the way to the satisfying conclusion that proves justice appears with many faces.
Anyone wanting a fast read that will keep them turning pages definitely needs to read this book. I recommend readers Bookmark The Vacation.
Four friends that went to college together take a vacation in France with their families. When Kate sees an incriminating text on her husbands phone that he is having an affair, and it is with one of her friends that she is on vacation with. While she is determined to figure out which one it is, all of them have secrets, but will some be dangerous enough to kill over? A good book to read with an interesting plot that keeps you guessing until the end.
It starts out as a wonderful vacation for four friends and their families. It is set at a beautiful house in France. As the friends gather they find each one is holding a secret. It will be a very interesting and telling week!
I loved the characters in this book. Each family has their secrets and as you find later, some of the secrets are intertwined. I also loved the setting. The house in France was beautiful and has a force of trees. I could picture the characters as they went about the house and I love these type of books.
There is plenty of mystery to unravel. This is my second book by this author and I love his writing style. It pulls you in and I stayed up late in the night reading as I couldn’t wait to find out what happened next.
I would recommend this book to anyone who loves mysteries and complex characters.
This is kind of a slow burn which I don’t really care for but the latter part of the book kind of made up for it. A friendship that has lasted for years is put to the test when they go on vacation only to realize there’s secrets that will pull them apart. This was a decent read and I would recommend it.
Thanks to NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book for my honest review.
I really enjoyed this thriller from an author I have never read before. The story held my attention throughout this French vacation of friends and families. The writing style kept my interest with plenty of twists and turns throughout the novel. Good character development throughout as the story kept evolving. Well done!
Pacing of this book was a little odd for me. Parts felt drawn out and then felt like the ending was rather abrupt. I may never vacation with multiple families ever again.
Every time I thought I knew what was going to happen next, the author added another layer to the mystery. Even when I got to the end, I thought that it was going to be predictable. After seeing the amazing way Logan weaves his story, I am definitely going to add his name to my list of favorite authors. Definitely one that you should read!
This is how you make readers care about characters who may not always be all that likable. Kate and her 3 besties travel together with their families to a mansion in France. Her hubby has been acting weird and she thinks he may be having an affair. Oh, yes, and it can only be with one of her friends. A normal person would confront him immediately, but then the novel would have been very short, so instead she turns into a paranoid jealous mess. And that’s what I mean about characters not being shown in the best light, since Kate starts noticing quirks, flaws and darkness behind each one of them. Someone who seemed great in one chapter looks like a psycho in the next one, but Kate may not be the most reliable narrator. One of the husbands is an alcoholic and another one may be cyberstalking teenagers. Anger management issues abound and, oh, yes, there are needy children and sulky teenagers in need of slapping (in my opinion). Only Kate’s son Daniel was so sweet he was impossible to dislike at any moment. The plot is character-based, but the action never flags. The setting is well-defined and you can almost taste the salty air. I figured out how some things were not as they seemed and had an inkling on where the McGuffin lied but I was still surprised by the final revelations and I was very satisfied with the ending.
I chose to read this book and all opinions in this review are my own and completely unbiased. Thank you, NetGalley/ St. Martin's Press!
The Vacation is the second book of TM Logan's that I've read in the past year and I have to say that I'm enjoying this author's work. This psychological thriller had me guessing throughout the book at "whodunit" and I really didn't get the full picture until the narrator pieced it all together of me. For that, I applaud the writing and the way the plot was paced and put together.
This book starts out with our narrator, Kate and her husband and 2 kids about to vacation with her 3 very good friends from university. They are all turning 40 this year and they haven't all gotten together in some time. Their trip to France will be the big shindig they need and want. These women bring their families on this trip for the first time. But what happens when Kate discovers a stream of text messages on her husband's phone that basically eludes to him having an affair with someone from their group there in France? Can anyone be trusted? Will the vacation be ruined? Will their marriage end while they are supposed to be happily vacationing with their family and friends in a palatial pad in France?
This story is told in various POVs. Most of the story is told from Kate, but we get literally everyone's thoughts about the trip and what is happening there (and a little in the past as well). For that, we get A LOT of background information. Some was needed. Some was not. It left me questioning why we needed everyone's POV since it was Kate's discovery of a string of texts that this story was based on. But this story is so much more than that. It's about a week in France. It's about friendships that go back years and years. It's about secrets, lies and twists you didn't even see coming until Logan brings them all together at the end.
I enjoyed the book and the story being told. The chapters were short and made the book feel very fast paced. But it actually was paced quite well (not too fast, not too slow). It was told over a week in France. It was divided up by days and characters' POVS. I was continuously guessing who could've been the person Kate's husband was cheating on her with throughout the whole book. Literally. Until the very end. For that reason, I didn't really even like any of the characters all that much. All the women seemed to be out for just themselves and the men were just...not for me. I liked Daniel (Kate's son) the best. Most of the other children were even unlikable. It's a wonder that I actually enjoyed the book and was flipping the pages to get the answers I was seeking. For that reason, I say T.M. Logan is a genius. T.M. Logan made me care about the story and what was happening so ferociously, but I really didn't care for the characters. I don't even know if that makes sense.
Overall, I enjoyed the book and the way the story was told and how it came together in the end. There were definitely many ups and down, but for the most part I enjoyed the way the story was told, the way the plot unfolded and the conclusion we got. It was a twisted, secret filled pretty mess! 3.75 stars rounded up.
