Four long-time female friends embark on a family centered vacation to celebrate their upcoming fortieth birthdays. One of the women suspects her husband of an affair with one of her best friends who is also on the trip.
Kate along with her husband Sean, her teenage daughter Lucy and her ten year old son Daniel are heading to a villa in the South of France to spend a week at a lavish villa. But, Kate is on high alert after Sean’s strange behavior and a series of texts found on his phone. In addition, Kate is worried about her sixteen y old daughter Lucy who seems to be harboring a secret of her own.
As the week progresses Kate becomes suspicious of all her friends for one reason or another. She seems to lack any ability to assess the situation and the stress of it causes her to make unwise decisions.
This is not a happy group of campers. Twelve individuals come together for a week of fun and not a single one of them seems happy, including the children. The tension between these so-called life-long friends is ever-present. The teenagers have some serious issues to contend with along with zero adequate parental support. The younger children are mostly ignored. The story is depressing from a number of angles.
After tragedy strikes, the truth is finally revealed as a torrent of secrets pours out. There is a surprise at the end which had me questioning how far an author will go to shock readers. Justice served is a major theme as is the burden of secrets kept from the ones we love. Finally, beware of others’ parenting style, especially when agreeing on a family vacation together.
BRB Skip It.
I wanted to like this book BUT it seemed nothing happened. I only kept reading because I kept thinking surely something will happen or be revealed. The ending even felt rushed. This book could have been so much more.
I received an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review
This book definitely went down some roads I did not expect it to go. Some of it’s very standard vacation “accident” thriller type stuff but in the end it transcended the tropes and still felt fresh. Definitely well worth the read. 3.5 rounded up
This is a fast paced and suspenseful book that will keep you guessing - there were lots of good twists and surprises. It is a quick read that will be a perfect vacation book. I really enjoy T.M. Logan's books and style. I received a digital ARC of this book from NetGalley.
I really enjoyed this book and it really did keep me guessing throughout with all the plot twists.
The book follows four longtime girlfriends; Izzy, Rowan, Jennifer and Kate. They have been friends since childhood and are looking to go on a "family style" vacation with their spouses and children so they can all celebrate their 40th birthdays together. Things in their lives have changed so drastically since the "good old days" so can they really enjoy each other's company like they used to, and put any past issues behind them?!
The book starts out, and is mostly told from, Kate's point of view. As she arrives to the villa with her husband and two children there is already a sense of foreboding in regards to what might happen on this vacation. Then Kate finds something on her husband's phone that threatens their whole life as a family. But things aren't always the way they appear.........
This one is definitely worth the read!

T.M. Logan does a wonderful job of introducing a rather large group gathered for a reunion vacation in France. The backdrop is beautiful, but it turns out most of these friends are hiding not-so-beautiful secrets! As is usual in life, everyone thinks the other families are without problems. The first family problem exposed, helps you discover the secrets with each family. When the murder occurs, you finally get some straight answers!
This book is a great read for any vacation.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press and NetGalley for the advanced copy of this book. I was immediately drawn into the premise of this book. Three families on one vacation, mystery ensues. Who is Kate’s husband having an affair with? What is going on with the kids? The author does a great job of making you question all of the characters (with the exception of innocent Daniel) throughout the book. They were well developed but not a particularly likable group. It was definitely a slow burn as the real information doesn’t come out until right at the end, but I found myself wanting to keep reading to get all of the answers.
I couldn't wait to finish this book, and not in a good way. There was too much going on but nothing going on at the same time. It's like the author wanted to create suspense and then made up a whole bunch of information to throw you off the trail of what would be the big reveal.
I really enjoyed this book- very unexpected events. Basically 4 college girlfriends and their spouses and kids all get together for a few days. There seems to be a lot of resentment among the girlfriends. Can’t say much more without giving things away. It was well written and Not the typical book.
College friends together for a wonderful vacation with their families. But one might be having an affair with anothers husband. Four friends with secrets. Can anyone be trusted?
Every time I thought I figured something out, there was a new tw.ist.. I was totally not ready for the ending.
Thank you to St Martin's Press and Netgalley for an advanced read in exchange for this review.
Kate, her family, friends, and their families are on a luxurious vacation. Kate then suspects her husband is having an affair with one of her friends. WHO IS IT?!
This book has good character development, however, none of the characters are particularly likable. It's hard to imagine why anyone would want to have an affair with Kate's husband. There is a plot twist that I didn't see coming, but it took an awfully long time to get there. You have to read through a lot to get to that point, but it was a surprise part to the story. Also, once you reach it, it is then over pretty quickly. Overall, a decent read.
Another great book by T.M. Logan! The plot twists and character development will keep you reading until the last page. I’m very much hoping there is a sequel after reading the last few pages. Definitely recommend!
Thank you to netgalley for the arc in exchange for an honest review.
I received this book as an ARC from NetGalley.
This reunion vacation was certainly not "a walk in the park" for 4 college friends and their families. This story revolves around friends reconnecting after many years, teenage angst, adult infidelity, and buried secrets. As you read, you keep changing your mind as to which characters are "good guys" and which are not. Suspicion falls on each of them and the truth is not revealed until the very end. Suffice it to say this will be their last vacation together!
I have thoroughly enjoyed all of T.M. Logan's books and this is no exception. I look forward to future novels.
Sooooo good! I read this book in two days! Great, rich, flawed, believable characters drive a compelling story of old friends, a group family vacation, secrets and regrets. I enjoyed the ride! Having said that, the last page keeps from giving this 5 stars. Is there a sequel coming?
Kate, Rowan, Jennifer, and Izzy were friends in college. They kept in touch and met up yearly, but husbands, children, and jobs have gotten in the way, and they decide to celebrate turning forty by going on vacation. The women, their husbands, and children head to a beautiful villa in southern France. A week to reconnect, relax, and plan some much-needed friend time. What could go wrong?
For starters, Kate believes her husband Sean is having an affair. Not just with someone Kate doesn't know, but with one of these three women. None of these characters are particularly likable, so it isn't a stretch to believe that any of them might be having an affair with Sean without giving a thought to Kate. Second, the teenagers, Jake, Ethan, and Lucy all seem to be not quite right, with each of them having their secrets.
As the week progresses, it becomes apparent that something is very wrong here, and an affair might be the least of Kate's concerns. The author managed to pull everything together, and while I had my suspicions about where he was headed, I did not anticipate the ending. Chapters are short and I flew through The Vacation. I'm already thinking that this would be a great beach read!
If you are looking for an introduction to T.M. Logan's writing, might I suggest Lies. I loved that book!
The Vacation is another spine-tingling thriller from author T.M. Logan. I read it in a little over a day because I just couldn't stop reading. I'd get to the end of a chapter thinking, "I need to get something done," but the chapter end would leave me hanging. There was no point at which I wanted to put it down except when I had to eat or sleep.
The Vacation is a book in which most of the characters are not very likable, either because they're hiding secrets, or they're self-absorbed. The most likable character is Kate and Sean's nine year old son, Daniel. He's so full of life. Daniel may just be a budding cinematographer. He loves to film things, and like any nine year old, he doesn't care if he's invading people's privacy or not. I also liked Izzy, but I'll let you get to know her when you read this novel.
In the beginning of The Vacation, before we start to see the characters for who they really are and what they're hiding, I felt like I could most relate to Jennifer. She stayed home with her kids, and when they went to school, she got a job at the school. Now that they're teens, she's having a hard time letting them grow up. At least this is the impression you get at the start. But things aren't always as they seem.
You can't help but get caught up in the train wreck that this trip becomes. Little by little, things start happening...little things that you just know will culminate in disaster. I love this "slow burn." Following clues, observing behaviors, making assumptions...I love thinking I have something figured out then finding out that I was completely wrong.
The Vacation is absolutely a novel that I recommend. 5 stars.
THE VACATION is the story of a woman who goes on vacation with her husband and children, along with her three best friends and their husbands and children. She soon realizes that one of them seems to be having an affair with her husband.
I really debated between 3 and 4 stars, and settled at a 3.5. I wanted to find out who was doing what with who, and for the most part, found the writing to be mostly gripping and leaving enough hanging to force me into the next chapter, but I had two minor issues: 1) The ending seems implausible given the nature, and 2) the main character could have come to the conclusion before things got so far out of hand if she really wanted to. I looked back on my reviews for T.M. Logan’s other books, and I said the same thing about his novel, LIES (good book, but would’ve been resolved faster in real life). However, his next novel, 29 SECONDS, was an amazing and suspenseful read that kept me hooked. This one is somewhere in between...mostly gripping with a multitude of climax scenarios for the reader to guess, but just falls a bit short. I still look forward to more from this author.
Thank you to St. Martin’s Press, author T.M. Logan, and NetGalley for an ARC.
I expected this to be fluffy vacation thriller and was pleasantly surprised when it had meat to it!
A group of girlfriends decide to book a villa in France and go on vacation with their families to celebrate turning 40. However, it seems they are all keeping secrets from eachother and there's at least on affair going on....
The interpersonal relationships between the friends and husband's were well written and the mystery kept me guessing. I enjoyed the multiple points of view and short chapters.
The little segues into teenage Lucy's mind were confusing until the very end of the book because I wasn't sure who was talking or why they were included. Otherwise, this was a solid beach read with an actually suspenseful story!
This book kept my interest for awhile, but slogging through dithering Kate's obsession about which of her three best friends were having an affair with her husband took its toll on me. It was obvious she was misconstruing the situation because how else would we, the readers, be "shocked" at the inevitable surprise ending? Yes, there was one, but it took 390 plus pages to get there. And then, my reaction was a blasé "oh, okay." And I have the same opinion of this book ... okay.
Thanks Net Galley for the opportunity to read and review.
Four longtime friends, complete with husbands and children, go on a luxurious vacation together for a week in the south of France. What could go wrong?? This is a good domestic thriller, and a page turner. This is the first book I’ve read by this author, and I look forward to reading more. Recommended!
