I got "The Wrong Mr. Darcy" through Netgalley for an honest review. For me, it was an OK book. This book is a sports romance that is the first of this sub-genre.
Sexual violence, abortion, and gun violence is never an easy topic, so please note there's quite a bit in here that may trigger others.
It's also a book that seems disjointed and off the mark, so if you enjoy the more free-flowing, fast-paced, and the edge of your seat kind of reads, there's none of that here.
While I was reading "The Wrong Mr. Darcy", I had some vibes of Sandra Bullock's movie, "The Blind Side" (Nov.2009) The film is one of my favorites
Warning: for sexual violence, abortion, and gun violence

I love books that are inspired by Jane Austen's Pride and Prejudice and this was no exception. A great read.

Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for the chance to read this advance copy. I love modern adaptations of Austen novels, and this one was no different. I really liked Hara and Derek as characters. They were definitely Elizabeth and Darcy. While her mom, and Charles were also very similar to their Austen equivalents, the other characters brought new things to their equivalent characters that I appreciated.

The Wrong Mr. Darcy by Evelyn Lozada and Holly Lorincz concerns a young woman, Hara Isari, who wants to be a female sportswriter and Derek Darcy, a player for a Boston based basketball team. Hara has won a writing contest and the prize is an interview with a player from the team, Charles Butler, who avoids press interviews. Hara has an infamous family background and is excited by winning the contest. Hara first runs into Derek at the airport where she is being picked up, then she again sees him at the owner's house where she is staying. There's a party, the interview and then a basketball game. Hara finds herself involved in finding out what's going on between Derek and his best friend Charles. As the story progress there's plenty of action and a budding romance. The story concludes with some startling events involving Hara's father, the owner of the team and Charles who is caught between a rock and hard place. Throughout Derek is Hara's knight in shining armour who helps her with a few sticky situations. The story ends satisfactorily with all questions answered and a HEA. This story was intriguing, suspenseful with just the right amount of romance.

This book was adorable! I really enjoyed the love story and the humor behind this one. It's an easy, enjoyable read. If you love romance and retellings, pick this one up!

First let me start off by saying that I’m a big fan of Pride and Prejudice. I was excited to try The Wrong Mr. Darcy because I’ve seen a few modern retellings done well. Any comparison though creates big shoes to fill. Unfortunately for me, this one fell short.
I enjoyed the story, but didn’t think Hara or Derek we’re worthy of comparison to the original Elizabeth and Darcy. I could see where the authors were trying to make comparisons and they included a quote from Pride and Prejudice at the beginning of each chapter, but it just didn’t work for me.
This might be a better read for someone who hasn’t read the original.

Thanks to Netgalley and St. Martin's Press for the opportunity to read and review this book!

What I liked best about this book was the way basketball insinuated itself throughout this Pride and Prejudice retelling. Class, money, and scandal play out across an entirely different stage than the one Austen knew. The application is creative and believable. Each chapter also starts with a relevant Pride and Prejudice quote, sometimes delightfully tongue-in-cheek.

Heroine Hara has a sports reporting career ahead of her and family drama behind her. Modern day Darcy is as awkward and straight-laced as the original. While they were both compelling individually, I admit the romance was not as convincing. It's hard to recreate the tension and pacing of the source material, and I believe this book missed the mark on that front-- there was sexual tension without swoony romance or sharp dialogue. Their conversations felt forcibly deep, like, "Look at us! We're bonding!" Without the ebb and flow of an organic connection. It was an issue of pacing and tone that limited my buy-in.

Hara is a small town journalist who is looking to become a big city sports journalist but because she is young and she is a woman, those two things makes her job much too difficult for her. Never mind, that her dad is in jail that wronging the sports industry, that makes her pursuing her dream job even more harder. But she is not one to quick and she will do anything to accomplish it. When an opportunity comes to her to interview the big and quiet Boston NBA star, she jumps at it right away and when she is the one to win that competition, she packs her bags and goes to Boston to do the interview.

There she meets not only the main star but his best friend and side kick, Derek Darcy, who she hits off right away, but things are not what they seem like it and as the days go by Hara starts to find out things that she shouldn't and she decides to stay a few more days to find out what really is going on.

Alright, I'm going to say, the mystery was good, I was intrigued and I wanted Hara to go and figure all of that out. Derek, he was more of a side kick and anything else for me, who else thinks like this?

And most importantly, I'm from Boston and I just couldn't let it pass everything that was wrong about MA...uh I just can't.

The romance was just meh for me too.

I got an eARC from Netgalley.

2 starts out of 5 for me.

Let me start by saving this is not a retelling of Pride and Prejudice. The main character mentions the book and quotes from Pride and Prejudice at the start of the chapter, and one of the characters last night is Darcy that is all you find in reference to that.

I was not happy with this book. In the short amount of time Hara who is a reporter who won a contest to interview a basketball player was in Boston fro a couple of days and this time table of all the things that happened was too much. You have flooding, drama, illegal activity, romance, miscarriage, murder just to name a few. This was too far fetched.

Unfortunately this book was not for me.

I received an ARC of The Rong Mr. Darcy by Evelyn Lozada and Holly Lorincz from St. Martin's Griffin and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you!

1 Star... A poor retelling of sorts of Pride and Prejudice with a sports twist. Way off the mark and very misleading! I did not like this book at all and I simply cannot recommend it!

A pleasant reinterpretation of Pride and Prejudice, but sadder, in the environment of professional sport, between stereotypes, machismo and betting. Well written and fast paced.

Una piacevole rilettura di Orgoglio e Pregiudizio, ma piú nero, nell'ambiente dello sport professionistico, tra stereotipi, maschilismo e scommesse.
Ben scritto e dal ritmo sostenuto.

THANKS NETGALLEY FOR THE PREVIEW!

Who doesn't love a Pride and Prejudice retelling! Loved the characters. I could definitely see this as a beach read. Lozada does a great job of sports romances. Definitely recommend!

Oh man, did I want to like this book. I first saw the cover and fell in love. Most graphics like this one would fall in the category of Romantic Comedy and I more than needed that at this point. Plus, I noticed the basketball and am a total hardcore fan. This was shaping up to be just what I needed (with a cancelled basketball season and some laughs, I was super anxious to start this). Then I read the synopsis. Ok. This is sounding fun and entertaining. But that's where my love ended, unfortunately.

This book had potential. The idea of a woman sportswriter for a local newspaper getting her big break by winning a contest to interview one of the best young basketball players in the game and proving she was made for the sports industry had me intrigued. Then add the fun and interesting love interest in Derek Darcy who is a player that is the complete opposite from her. He's from an affluent family and she is from the 'wrong side of the tracks' and they keep coming head to head. The story just had so many scenarios it could've taken but then seemed sophomoric in it's efforts to be classified as a romantic comedy. I found really no humor in the book beside maybe little quips that Hara's mother said to her about getting a man. There was no chemistry between Hara and Derek and actually no chemistry between side characters that we were lead to believe fell in love. We never got to see it or experience it. And when Derek and Hara actually got together, it was too little too late. It wasn't until 3/4 of the book was over!

THEN, there was a mystery for Hara to solve within her interview that just left me with my mouth wide open. And not in a good way. I mean, it was kind of mind blowing, but really? Even if it's fiction, you want some believability within. There was a tad scandalous truth, but the climax to the very ending? Nope. Not at all. Too far fetched. I was hoping for so much more and was disappointed in the outcome. Add in the lack of research for language differences between Italian and Spanish and I was blown away with the mistakes in a book that is traditionally published (but since I got an early copy, this may be changed in the final edit).

The writing...what was with changing point of views all within the same chapter and without a break? It was confusing and did not flow well. I've seen this done in a much better way (put some sort of break in or alternate chapters). Overall, this story, the writing, the characters and even the research put into characters was a mess. I expected some laughs and some characters that had a connection. I got none of that. If you're looking for a romantic comedy or sports romance, there is much better out there.
*The star rating is basically for the cover, the potential and the Jane Austen quotes included in the story.*

I loved the idea of a modern multicultural version of Pride and Prejudice since it is one of my all-time favorite books, but I was slightly disappointed that this didn’t live up to my expectations as much as I hoped it would. The characters weren’t written to be as deep as I had hoped to elicit more care and compassion but felt sort of one dimensional. I never felt connected to the characters in a way that I truly cared what happened to them in the end.

Also, take into consideration that Pride and Prejudice is one of my favorite books, but I could barely find the original storyline in this retelling. It took so many creative freedoms with the story that I don’t think it should be marketed as a modern version as much as it is.

What in the fresh hell have I read?
This book caught my eye because of the synopsis. This book literally took Pride and Prejudice way too literal lol. There were no likeable characters (to sum up the MC, I’ll take a quote from the book - “... you willfully misunderstand people.”), the situations are way too convenient, and the story was just all over the place. I wish I could’ve liked this better.

Thanks so much for a wonderful read! Loved the interactions with main characters, the chemistry was on point. I would love to read more from this author! Great job!

This is not the book for me. I didn’t end up finishing it, it didn’t capture my attention. With so many modern pride and prejudice adaptations out there, I was hoping for a new and exciting take. Unfortunately, that’s just not what this was.

I received an early release copy from #NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

I like all things Pride & Prejudice. I have read many a spin-off of the tale. This one was very different from what I was expecting, and it was still quite good. In fact, I might read the book again.

Hara is a budding sportswriter from small-town USA when the opportunity of a lifetime lands in her lap. The chance to interview a basketball star who hates the press. While in the interview, she can't take her eyes off his best friend Derek Darcy.

Yes, sparks fly!! The wit is amazing in this book. The pecking of our two main characters make this read well worth your time.

I also appreciated some of the unexpected detail of a basketball game and the different views of the characters. It was a great change of pace from going straight for hot and heavy.

Oh, and yes, the chemistry is smoking hot, and there are some really nice scenes in a kitchen and a bedroom. Not overly done, but enough to keep you excited for the next chapter.

This was a very pleasant surprise with some twists and turns that were well done.

At the library where I work, I was once investigating our reviews on Google, just to see. We had a four star rating, and I didn’t know why that would be. It’s a small town, and we’re pretty well liked by the public. Just seemed weird.

Lo and behold, some random stranger on the internet, clearly using a fake name, had given us one star and written just two words:

“Actually bad.”

And given our reputation, and feeling assured this was just some troll, my coworkers and I laughed and laughed about this choice of words. But now, friends, I’ve found a book worthy of this simple, yet effective review!

The Wrong Mr. Darcy: actually bad.

Nothing about this book makes much sense at all?? The romance is terrible and blahhhhh, and the story itself is just bizarre and wild. I’m all for suspended disbelief but y’all were asking a lot of me here.

Hara is a sports reporter, trying to catch her big break and make a name for herself. Her father is in prison for running huge bets on the sports world for years and years (and, unrelated: her mother is annoying as heck?). Hara is invited to Boston to do an interview with their star player, Charles Butler, who never talks to anyone. Things get shady. The owner is a bad guy. Darcy is a basketball player, and he’s mean at first, but then he’s okay? But seriously lacking the complexity of his namesake. Things just keep getting more and more dramatic while everyone keeps secrets, etc. etc. No real resemblance to Pride & Prejudice whatsoever, like pretty sure the authors never read it.

I’m trying not to make the plot sound so darn boring or confusing but it is exceedingly difficult. It was just not good dude. It took me days and days to read this even though it should’ve taken me one evening. I just couldn’t trudge through it. The lack of character complexity and likability, the absurdness of the entire plot, and just how boringly this team writes absolutely ruined it. This is actually similar to the way I feel about Christina Lauren (The Unhoneymooners aside – for some reason that’s a goody); the writing lacks a certain pizazz, like they didn’t really care enough about the story to put some heart into it.

Either way, this is two big thumbs down from me. Just skip this. However, if you still feel the need, it’s scheduled to be published August 25, 2020. A copy of The Wrong Mr. Darcy was provided to me by the publisher in exchange for an honest review.

This was a very different read for me. Some parts I liked and others I didn't. I don't follow basketball so that wasn't a theme that enticed me. Hara and Derek seemed like a couple that didn't fit at first but they worked hard to prove me wrong.
