Unfortunately, this one was not for me. I love a good romance, I enjoy other light romance novels and authors, however this was too saccharine and fluffy for me. I get the intent, I get the retelling concept, but it was just a miss (and a mess) in my eyes.
Hara is a hard working, determined young woman with one dream on her mind – to make it in the male dominant sports reporting world. She has always loved sports but her life was changed when her father was sentenced when she was a young girl. Her Mother has since then done all she can to try to ensure Hara finds a young, rich man but Hara wants to make a name for herself writing about sports. The two are at odds throughout the novel, as her Mother does not seem to truly understand her daughter.
She wins the chance of a lifetime – the opportunity to travel to the big city and to interview one of the top basketball rookies. She can’t even begin to fathom her own luck. The opportunity of a lifetime soon becomes rocky and things are not quite what they seem. She doesn’t fit in with this crowd, no one trusts her and worse – she may have won this opportunity through an unfair advantage. My heart was sore for her, as I know so many of us as women can relate to this situation – where you feel as though your opinion doesn’t matter because you are a woman or you have earned an opportunity unfairly because you are a woman (especially in a male dominant sector).
The one person she thought she could never trust (Derek) ends up being the one person who is truly on her side as she goes through a series of ups and downs in this novel. There are a lot of ups and downs in this novel so be prepared, some which may be difficult for readers. The book touches on abortion, attempted suicide, miscarriage, so please keep this in mind when you begin to read the novel.
This was a light novel that gave a different look at the world of basketball and a young woman’s journey to break into the world of sports reporting. The one part that I wish had a stronger focus on it was the secret world of bribery and scandals that could rock the basketball world.

Honestly i think that no matter who does this premise it’s never going to go the way i want it, i really wanted to love this but while the premise is one of my favorites i think that this unfortunately did not hit the mark. but i still thank netgalley for the opportunity.
I was surprised with how much I enjoyed The Wrong Mr. Darcy by Evelyn Lozada and Holly Lorincz. I flew through it in one sitting. I initially was not sure how I would enjoy this as it is centered arounds sports. I am not a big sports fan and the book is centered around my least favourite sport, basketball.
The Wrong Mr. Darcy is a modern take on Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen. I always love seeing the various ways modern authours come up with to retell this classic tale.
This was a looser interpretation of Pride and Prejudice which I do tend to enjoy more. Things are changed enough that I do not feel like I am reading a poorly written version of Pride and Prejudice. The authours were creative enough to reinvent the characters and make the story interesting and fresh. I think Bingley’s character was the largest change in this story. I’m still not sure how I feel about him, but I love the creative liberty. The opening scene was the most unique intro to a Pride and Prejudice retelling I have ever read. Initially I thought what have I just decided to read? I was quickly hooked wanting to know how this story was going to play out. While I liked Hara and Derek (Elizabeth and Fitzwilliam) I did not connect with them in a personal way. I think the interpretation of Darcy was my favourite of all of the characters in the book. I felt we got to see his soft side as an audience quicker and I appreciated that. I would want Derek Darcy on my side.
I found some of the transitions a little odd, which had me back tracking a few times to refocus. That got a little old but may have been corrected in the final copy.
If you are on the fence about reading this take on Pride and Prejudice, I would encourage you to give it a try. It read super fast and I appreciate the creative liberties taken throughout the story. I cannot wait to read more books by this duo in the future.
I received an eARC from St. Martin’s Press through NetGalley. All opinions are 100% my own.
This was a contemporary romance that revolved around a basketball player and a sports reporter having a love/hate relationship. I was excited to read this book after reading the synopsis. The concept was great but the outcome wasn't exactly what I expected. The first few chapters were interesting because we we just getting to know Hara. Unfortunately, I got bored quickly as the story went on. The plot was intriguing, yet it felt forced and poorly executed. I never felt connected enough to the characters to care about what happens to them next.. Though I did like that the story took on the real issue of sexism when it comes to sport's reporting. Women do know about sport's and are just as capable as men to report about them. It was a good book to read at the pool for entertainment but will not be added to my "good enough to read again" list.
I am grateful to Netgalley and the publishers for the opportunity to read an ARC of this book in exchange for a honest review.
ARC for honest review with no compensation Received from NetGalley 3.5 stars
The Wrong Mr. Darcy by Evelyn Lozada is a standalone, kind of based on Pride and Prejudice and listed as a rom-com. Didn’t really feel the vibes but over all it was an OK read.
The Wrong Mr.Darcy had a great premise that unfortunately didn’t hit the mark. The writing didn’t grip me. I didn’t love the characters enough to keep me interested. I liked the concept of this book but the execution wasn’t there for me.
This is probably closer to 2.5/5 stars, but I am giving it a little bump because this book kept me entertained on about 6 miles of walking in 2 days.

If you are a P&P retellings fan, work in journalism at all, or work in sports/basketball....or even the medical field, this book is likely to piss you off.
I, like so many others, looked at this as a fun sports inspired retelling of Pride and Prejudice. As the reviews rolled in and the ratings were low, I put it off longer and longer. As I started this book, I thought maybe the reviews were a bit unfair, as the audiobook didn't seem that bad.
Then again, I also didn't realize a biracial woman, with Japanese blood and blue eyes is actually a fairly racist stereotype. Will keep that in mind going forward. And as I continued reading, I realized this wasn't really a retelling of P&P, but more...gently inspired by P&P. P&P was in the same room as this book at one point. It is like how you make a mimosa and just breathe the word orange juice into the champagne.
Honestly, the first half of this really isn't that bad. There are definitely some errors that the editor should have caught - someone's name definitely changed during a draft change - but it was an entertaining set up for a romance book. When I realized the author's background, the discussion of the basketball wives and girlfriends being more fleshed out made a lot more sense.
The last 30% of the book ramps up the drama well past what it needs to be. I also am not happy a P&P book made me hate the Charles Bingley character? And there are several side characters that just disappear. In fact we don't get resolution on one of the side stories at all.
Overall, I didn't really enjoy this book, but it kept me entertained while I exercised. That's about all I could ask of it really.
This book is not a cute, fun rom-com version of Pride and Prejudice. There is such a promising premise with the idea of a female sports writer trying to make a big impression, and falls for a star athlete. In the right hands, that could be a great story and if someone wants to write it, I would love to read it. From the first chapter, none of this story made sense. The idea that this podunk, small town newspaper, which has 1 full time employee would pay to send her from Oregon to Boston with flights and limos is insane. The idea of a female reporter staying at the owner's home is absurd. The author has no real understanding of sports. In no universe would a female sports writer show up at a club with players that she is covering and decide to party with them.
Thanks NetGalley for the preview!
Boy did I have high hopes for this P&Pesque book-and I was pretty let down. I kept searching for the parallels that I know and love from P&P and other retellings and found the only similarity is the name Darcy and the man is wealthy, I found some typos and wrong names in certain parts of the book as well as some confusing parts where I couldn't follow the writing. Additionally, the romance goes from 0 to 60 and I would have liked more scenes with the characters building a relationship. Hara felt like she never quite stuck to her guns and there's a lot of concerns and questions over her actions. I think this story had a great premise but was not executed in a way that did it justice.
I had high hopes for this book, but I was disappointed by the thin storyline. The story begins implausibly, and continues as such, with characters that are hard to sympathize with.
This was a well-written, solid romance that I enjoyed. I very much liked reading Hara and following her on her journey. And, of course, Derek was fun to meet and swoon over.
I did not enjoy this one sadly. It did not hold my attention. I may just not have been in the right place at the time to properly read and enjoy this book.
This was a very middle of the road book for me. While I loved the POC characters and diversity, I was kind of bored. I'm not even a Pride and prejudice fan so that aspect didn't appeal to me either or lack their of. This a sports romance which I do like that aspect but still I was not invested. I wanted more but it just fell flat. 3/5 stars.
I loved, loved. loved this one. Any book that combines sports and romance is a must for me! I also love the modern retelling of a classic. Such a fun read.
I honestly hated this book for the first half. Like, full on ragey hated it. Then, I put it down and fully forgot about it for a while.
This is not going to be a ragey review, mostly cause I just don't want to spend more time on this book. It wasn't good for me.
It tried to be overly complicated, it was overly dramatic and I honestly didn't feel the love story at all. I feel like, at the end Hara and Derek looked at each other and said, well, we're the only good people around, might as well be in love. I wasn't convinced by the love story for a second. I didn't like Hara from the beginning and nothing about this book made me change my mind. Also Derek? I didn't fully hate him, but, again, there was nothing about him that made me like him either.
I feel super meh about this book and that's just sad.
This book was cute. A rom-com built around sports? Sign me up! I wish I would have gotten to this one sooner because I could not put it down. I loved the storyline and the way the book was written. I loved all of the aspects that were around this book and made it what it was. I thought it was interesting to have an inside look at a sports reporter and what they do. I also thought that it was interesting to have a female sports reporter and see what others think of it. Overall I really enjoyed this one and I will definitely be picking up other books by this author in the future!
I must not be the perfect reader for this book. I tried to like it, but just couldn't. My pre-existing love for Darcy and Elizabeth just did not allow this one to work. I've read other updates that worked better than this one did. I chalk it up to my own deep-seated love for the original Darcy and Lizzie.
I liked this book!! The story was okay!! Wasn't really a pride and prejudice retelling!! The book was kind of slow!!
I appreciated the creative Pride and Prejudice references in this title, however overall it felt somewhat farfetched and overly dramatic - flash flooding, power outage, near death fall, surprise pregnancy, miscarriage, evil villain with a sex fetish, there was a lot going on!
