Sinister Psychological Suspense.....
A private beach on an exclusive island seems like paradise for Cora and Jonathan - until it becomes very clear that they are not alone. Compelling psychological suspense, a clever and twisting plot and a sinister feel made for an engaging and entertaining read.
I now know why the book blurb is rather scant in detail, its because its extremely hard to explain without giving anything away!
Even the style, which is reminiscent to some great late 80s psychological thrillers, and even naming them would be too big of a hint as to where this book leads you. And lead you it most certainly does, it leads you on a one hell of a journey all set to the backdrop of paradise.
What should be a trip of a lifetime turns out to be unforgettable in many, many ways, just not for the reasons intended. A remote, private island, only the two of them on the entire island, white sandy beaches, crystal clear blue ocean and on top of that, a marriage proposal and a business deal of a lifetime, projecting them from being reasonable comfortable money wise to insanely rich. Cora and Jonathan have it all, but their perfect life, their perfect holiday of a lifetime is about to change, only this time is not from anything good.
Paradise becomes a living nightmare as the pair discover they are not as alone on the island as they thought.
The book starts off fairly slowly with not a great deal of action apart form scene setting in the first half of the book, to the point I was close to giving up, but by god am I glad I didn’t! Perseverance and patience are paramount because what happens in the second half of the book thunders along at breakneck speed, leaving barely time to breath.
Just when you think you know what is going to happen, the plot gets turned on its head. Again!
A great read that has it all, stunning locations, love to hate characters, plot twists a plenty all bound together in a handsome looking cover!
Cora and Jonathan plan the perfect holiday to celebrate their engagement and the selling of Jonathan’s business.
On their perfect, idyllic island they come across Hazel and Dylan…..the island was not as private as they believed…
They soon become friendly, but Cora is a little uneasy as she notices just how much the couple resemble her and Jonathan……and then events turn sinister. With flashbacks to Cora’s past…….the tension builds.
This is a slow burn of a psychological thriller with a feeling of unease and an ever building sense of tension…..
With a marvellously complex plot, with plenty of surprises, adding to the suspense from start to the exciting and ultimately satisfying ending. I can thoroughly recommend it.
Thank you to The publishers and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this for free. This is my honest and unbiased review.
4-5 stars! I found this to be a quick, fun, thrilling read! I loved the location of the story, found the characters to be well developed, and the story to be well written! Had some great twists & turns, chills, thrills, and of course shocks! Thought that most who enjoy exotic locale type of vacation thrill rides, will enjoy this book! So definitely recommend to those looking for a thriller set up on a fantastic getaway, which the author described beautiful! But be sure to prepare for some shocks!
Will make sure to buzz it up on different platforms!
A couple, Cora and Jonathan, are having their dreamed holidays and to put the icing on the cake they’ve just got engaged! Yes, this is a thriller, so you can expect that there will be surprises and twists, of course!
I liked the story, but I suppose I’ve read so many mystery and thrillers that knowing that Cora and Jonathan have booked a private island to then discover another couple staying near them, my alarms start sounding out loud! Yes, I suppose you can say I have a devious mind and I was expecting the worst of it! So no surprises on this side…!
But, let’s talk about the characters, they are very well written and detailed; you don’t know who to trust or which twist will be waiting for the reader on the next page. The story is so well plotted and described that any reader will feel transported to the island with Cora and Jonathan; walking through the beach, swimming with sharks… the adventure you are searching seating on your favourite sofa with a hot chocolate!
I would recommend this book to anyone that loves a twisted story with a beautiful landscape and some intriguing characters! Because “The Beach House” is much more than a house, it is the story you’ll breath in just a few hours as addictive as it is! Ready?
I am a great fan of the idyllic beach holiday setting in a thriller and this lured me into reading The Beach House by PR Black. I was absolutely thrilled with it!
I revelled in the story-line, the characters and all of the many twists and turns as Cora begins the holiday of her dreams - a private beach in paradise - with her fiancé, Jonathan. Everything is going well as Jonathan has recently proposed to Cora and the sale of his business is the icing on the cake for the couple. Realising that the island isn't as private as they had believed, the couple invite their neighbours, Dylan and Hazel, to celebrate with them. But then events turn sinister...
The setting was glorious, but all was not perfect, giving rise to surprises, shocks, drama and suspicion. The development of the interrelationships between the holiday-makers and their strange neighbours meant that I was totally addicted to this drama-style thriller from start to finish and could not put it down. The clever writing by PR Black made it unclear as to what exactly was going on but that resulted in an even more compelling story. The Beach House is very highly recommended and a must-read!
I received a complimentary copy of this novel, at my request, from Aria via NetGalley, and this review is my own unbiased opinion.
From the blurb, the reader knows that this is not the idyllic holiday you’d expect, but nothing prepares you for the twists and turns that appear with increasing alacrity as the story progresses.
Cora and Jonathan are on a dream holiday, Cora seems unsure whether she wants to be there. Jonathan is full of surprises, and it seems that life is on track. Until, their exclusive holiday retreat becomes crowded, with another couple, and they can’t fail to see the resemblance to themselves.
The story has a strong technological theme, which adds depth and complexity to the plot.
Progressing, through Cora’s point of view, things start to spiral in an increasingly uncomfortable way. The characters are believable and complex. They are not what they appear to be on the surface.
Cora is an unreliable narrator, and as the story progresses, she presents a hidden side to her character. Flashbacks to incidents in her past illuminate and reinforce her present actions. The last part of the story is an adrenaline rush, and at times full of confusion.
Even at the end, I still wasn’t sure I’d understood everything, but that’s what you want from a psychological thriller.
An absorbing, addictive read.
I received a copy of this book from Aria via NetGalley in return for an honest review.
I was intrigued by the cover of this book and the blurb was Allright, but the book. What a horrible read.
I really didn’t enjoy it and I struggled to finish it.
The story seems to jump from one side to the other and the characters are flat, boring and unimaginative.
For some parts there is so much details (for example poker), but for others it just seems unfinished.
I think for me this book just seems like there are lot of storylines set up, but no clear direction for the story.
I found this book really difficult to get into but as you get further in, it becomes quicker, more fast paced and more gripping.
I knew that some of the people the main characters met would be dodgy but you didn't know exactly who until quite late on.
I know you have to suspend belief a little when reading fiction but the fact that Cora seems so much of a superwoman and manages to survive as much as she does was quite astounding and perhaps just a little too far fetched.
I found the ending a little confusing - were the main characters bluffing the whole time or are they just as bad as the others themselves?
Despite my misgivings about the book, such as the farfetched actions of Cora and the slow start, the latter end more than made up for it even if it did leave me a little confused. A solid three stars for this one.
This book follows a couple on what can only be referred to as the DREAM vacation....until it turned into a nightmare.
I struggled through the first half of the book, but the ending definitely picked up. I think had there been a little bit more development in the beginning I would have liked this more, but everything just came off a slightly outrageous and just not developed. It was a quick easy read despite that though.
Thank you to netgally for the digital copy of this book in exchange for my honest review!
A crazy ride of a novel!
A couple embark on a holiday to rival all other holidays. IT's a very costly and posh place to say the least. The island is exclusive island and is the perfect place for a newly made millionaire to propose.
But then they realise that the island is not as exclsuive as they would have liked. The other couple then try to muscle their way in to their holiday, inviting them to their beach house, on a trip etc. You know we've all done it, meet another couple on holiday who then seem to join your couple and never give you free time?
This story is a powertrip, a holiday from hell, where there is a battle for supremacy on one tiny tiny island. Cracking premise but the plot and characters were just a little too juvenile and unbelieavable for me. If you suspend disbelief, it's a fun ride though.
What the freak!! What a mind blowing action thriller. I left my analytical brain aside and just soared high where the author took me.
Cora and Jonathan were at the beach house on an island for a holiday. The neighbors appeared to be their doppelgangers. Initially they appeared to be friends, then things started crumbling.
My first book by author P R Black, and I was completely taken aback by the prose. The suspense slowly became a high voltage thriller. And Cora OMG she was fantastic. My dream come true. She had a brain which worked so quick that I was taken aback.
I loved the author’s style of writing. I was given a memory behind each of Cora’s actions which revealed who she really was layer by layer. And man, I admired her. Great way of characterization.
The book was a high speed adrenaline rush, a fight for survival. A school teacher navigating her way through the scams and twists, that too on a holiday. Whew… What a book. I finished the book at precisely 2:40am, and loved every minute of it.
I really wanted to like this book but if I'm honest I found it a bit too far fetched and the characters just weren't believable.
Cora and Jonathan head to a paradise Island just the two of them.
He has sold.his tech business and in the process become a millionaire and they're enjoying their new found wealth. Until they find they're not alone on the island... Another couple who bear a striking resemblance to them are also there.
The book makes you feel very uneasy as you're reading it. It's clear something isn't right but you don't quite know who you can and can't trust.
I enjoyed the idea but for me there were too many silly things with the characters that just didn't add up.
Jonathan and Cora embark on an expensive vacation to an exclusive island. He asks Cora to marry him and surprises her with an exquisite diamond ring. On the same day, Jonathan's company sells for millions of dollars. Nothing could be sweeter...
That is, until they meet Dylan and Hazel. These two exemplify the kids from school who always want you to party and act carelessly. The two of them actually physically almost resemble Jonathan and Cora. Somehow, Dylan and Hazel have a large mansion on the "supposedly" single-dwelling island where Jonathan and Cora are staying.
As the reader can imagine, this holiday takes a turn for the worse. In fact, it becomes a nightmare - particularly for Cora...
Excellent writing and plot development. Descriptive wording is well done. A very interesting and exciting read!
Many Thanks to Aria and NetGalley for a very good read.
Full disclosure I didn’t like this book BUT it entertained me.
Cora and Jonathon annoyed the hell out of me. There’s a level of stupidity to the characters I just can not relate with. Gullibility is strong with this couple my fellow readers! There’s too much action towards the end but I loved this in the same way I love bad 80s films. It’s fun and it’s easy. It’s the kind of story where you don’t need to 100% clear your mind and dive in. Really this should be a 1 star book but I laughed so much I’m giving it 2!
Cora and Jonathon are on a dream trip that quickly becomes a nightmare. A lookalike couple befriend them and suddenly snarky things happen that alert Cora to a possible scam. Several twists make this a fast read and Cora, a schoolteacher, becomes a certified superhero. The real Cora? The real Jonathon? Who knows until the over the top ending.!
An amazing tropical holiday takes a turn when a newly engaged couple discovers that they aren't alone on the private island they've rented. They try to make the best of things and get to know their unexpected neighbors, who of course aren't what they seem to be. This book got off to an extremely slow start. I don't have to like the characters to get interested in what's going to happen to them, but there was nothing about Cora or Jonathan that got me interested in their lives or eventual fate. She's a teacher. He's the owner of a tech company that he just sold for a massive amount of money.
Late in the book, the author does some amazing things with one of the characters and after that there's one truly suspenseful scene that had me holding my breath, but I was bored most of the way through. Those two fantastic scenes didn't make it worth the slog to the end, and what I suppose was supposed to be the big twist definitely wasn't one.
Literally NOTHING is as it seems on this holiday island!
The Beach House kept me turning the pages to find out who to believe and who to root for. Strike Back meets Bond with a touch of Columbo too! Recommended!
Review
Jonathan and Cora travel to a private island for a dream holiday. Time to themselves, to enjoy each other’s company and for Jonathan to propose. Sitting outside their apartment, they spot another couple on “their” island.
Bizarrely, the new couple - Hazel and Dylan, look remarkably like Cora and Jonathan and coincidentally they even dress similarly.
The two couples befriend each other and have fun. Until Cora realises that things are getting out of hand and their friends are not who they originally seemed.
I persevered with the book. It seemed to go on without anything happening until the last quarter, building to a big and unbelievable crescendo.
I struggled with the fact that Cora was Wonder Woman. She could win a game of poker, was in the TA and therefore able to fight off a 17ft shark as well as dodging gunfire. And surviving being beaten to a pulp. The SAS would surely want this amazing person on their team.
I enjoyed the references to Cora’s life as a schoolteacher, although I could not see how some of this was relevant, eg Kayden and the trainers.
Jonathan was not a likeable character. He was easily-led and caused a lot of the problems they encountered. He was also weak and let Cora deal with their aggressors.
I rate this book 2 stars 🌟🌟
Thanks
Thank you to the publishers, Aria and author PR Black for an advanced copy of this ebook in exchange for an independent review.
When Cora and Jonathan arrive at a luxurious, isolated beach house on Two Trees Island, they are anticipating privacy and rest. They get neither. The couple, newly engaged and with millions in the bank from the sale of Jonathan’s tech company, soon discover that the key to this perfect vacation is surviving it.
Neighbors Hazel and Dylan, stroll down the beach to befriend Cora and Jonathan. The friendship moves very quickly. Only Cora realizes the relationship is moving too fast, everyone is partying and drinking too much and why do Hazel and Dylan look so much like Jonathan and her? Who is the boat captain who takes them to see the giant tiger sharks that patrol the offshore waters? Why does the same Australian expat show up at every bar they visit? As Cora’s worries mount, Jonathan’s behavior becomes erratic. Secrets are revealed, enemies are exposed and danger seems to be everywhere as The Beach House moves to an unexpected ending.
Full of plot twists and turns, The Beach House is an adrenaline rush of a novel racing to an action packed ending. Five stars!
