Another great thriller from Kimberly McCreight! I enjoyed A Good Marriage very much and look forward to reading more of Kimberly's books.
A Good Marriage is a slow-paced but engrossing mystery/thriller in which the clues are unraveled one by one and the reader doesn't know who to believe. Chapters offer insight into the lives and movements of various characters, adding to the puzzle and the reader's desire to put it all together. The back-and-forth keeps the reader guessing until the very end!
This one weaves several thriller tropes into one: the prep school parents are here (giving Big Little Lies vibes) and then there's the legal aspect (a MC is a lawyer) and of course we have an unreliable (or two) characters whose points of view are vital to the mystery. I liked it but did have a few slight issues with a few (for me) unrealistic aspects. Another lovely #arc from #netgalley and @HarperCollins ☕️
Sadly, this is the one book of McCreight that I could not get into, I don't know what it was, but I couldn't connect to the characters or the plot. I had seen mixed reviews on this online, but wanted to give it a shot because I absolutely LOVED her two previous novels. I ended up not finishing this one after attempting to read it many days in a row.
A Good Marriage was a bit slow to start, and a lot of characters were introduced. However, the pace picks up, and the intrigue keeps you turning the pages. This was a great mystery that kept me guessing until the end.
Lizzie receives a phone call from an old college classmate, Zach, who has been arrested for murdering his wife, Amanda. So the story begins, and nothing is as simple as it appears.
The plot keeps you guessing until the end.
This was a really good mystery/thriller and I devoured it in 24 hours. Set among the wealthy prep school families in Park Slope, A Good Marriage is a total page turner that expertly blends murder mystery and psychological suspense (with a dash of legal thriller thrown in!). Picture a darker version of Big Little Lies, with the backdrop of brownstone Brooklyn – which, let’s face it, is exactly the type of thing I want to read. You won’t be able to put this one down – it’s no wonder the series rights have already been snapped up by Nicole Kidman! I also recommend Reconstructing Amelia, another great mystery from the same author.
This was a fairly addictive read that lands somwehere between a legal and domestic thriller. Opens with a gruesome body discovery that is reminiscent of a CSI or Law and Order episode.
There are also great twists, many of which I totally predicted but it was still fun/satsifying to watch it play out.
Not a mind blowing feat of writing, but a fun one. And remember, it is very hard to impress me when it comes to thrillers. I'm looking for originality!
This was a tense read, and there were a few dark moments, but it definitely reflects our times. I have enjoyed the author's previous works and would definitely recommend this title to fans of drama, and suspense. Great for fans of Big Little Lies and The Girl on the Train;
This was my first Kimberly McCreight book! And certainly won't be my last. Thank you Harper Publishing and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for an honest review. The title of this book must be pure irony- the marriages featured in this book are anything but "good". And throw in a murder and a sex party to make that truly come to light. This was a longer book and a slow burn.... But don't let that turn you away! McCreight pulls you in and really makes you wonder who is responsible for such an awful murder of a woman who was truly wonderful (but not without her own secrets) This was just shy of a 5-star for me. There are some unanswered questions about Amanda I still have, and though the ending was satisfying, I'm not sure it was entirely believable. There are courtroom scenes drizzled throughout the book that are also absolutely pointless. Overall though, I definitely recommend!
This book was a slow burn, starting a little slow but building as you continued to read. Each of the couples portrayed had a certain stereotype, but the author added personality to each of them to make them more relatable. I really enjoyed this novel and would recommend it.
This one was just okay for me. While the "whodunit" aspect was enough to keep me reading, the who and why felt forced. I had many questions that were left unanswered. I didn't hate it, but didn't love it either.
I have enjoyed The author’s previous work but this novel was her best work yet. A Good Marriage sucks you in from the first page and has you invested in the tough choices facing the main character. McCreight has written a fast paced mystery that delves deeply into the issues of trust, relationships, and your own intuition. Excellent book!
A woman in an affluent neighborhood is found murdered in her home. Amanda’s cause of death was blunt force trauma, this book chronicles the days leading up to her death the evening of her friends annual summer party. Amanda’s husband Zach is believed to have killed his wife so he hires his old law school classmate, Lizzie, to represent him. The story also follows Lizzie as she tries to figure out how to prove Zach’s innocence. This is a book where every character seems to be abusing a dark secret behind their picture perfect lives. Each character has a skeleton hanging in their upper class closets. I really enjoyed reading this books because each time I picked it up, another secret was revealed changing The course of the case against Zach.
Got major Gone Girl vibes from this book! I felt like a lot happened in the last 50 pages but overall loved it and couldn't put it down.
Man people do some weird things when they are rich and bored. People also think they are above the law simply because of their status. Amanda, while rich and beautiful, didn’t really fit in. She married Zach in a haste to escape a dead end life. Except being married to him put her in danger.
I really enjoyed this suspense filled book but there were a couple things that were left unresolved or didn’t seem to fit within the story. Overall though I would definitely recommend this one to those who like suspense.
I love a book with flawed characters and from the beginning of this mystery we know the characters have challenges. The thing they are best at is concealing their problems, like adultery, drug abuse and financial problems. And, boy, are there secrets. It’s a good book to read while trying to escape the real life going on around us.
A group of affluent couples living in the trendy area of Brooklyn,,Park slope. All looks well but as the layers are unveiled not all is what it seems. When Amanda beautiful wife of Zach is found murdered in their beautiful home& Zach is arrested the seCrets start pouring out.Is anyone who they really seem.A true page turner that will keep you guessing to the last page.#netgalley#harpercollins
I decided to read this after hearing that Nicole Kidman bought the film rights. Engaging and definitely an effective thriller, but not my favorite I’ve read recently. A little clustered for a clear narrative.
Fast paced read that kept my interest throughout. I liked the whole book except the ending. I hate to say that, because the book was really good! I just found the ending to be a bit disappointing. It's something I can't really explain but it's definitely worth the read.
A Good Marriage by Kimberly McCreight was an entertaining and suspenseful read. Part mystery, part legal thriller, with many little twists throughout.
