I really love this series... the setting, the characters, the plots, and the writers' retreat! In Field Guide to Homicide, Cat, Shauna, and Seth have a new element to the writers' retreat: a hike. What could go wrong with getting into nature, getting some exercise, and taking in the breathtaking views? When Cat spots a dead body and Seth knows the unfortunate soul, Cat decides she needs to investigate the mysterious death and help Seth come to terms with the fate of his one-time friend. This is a well-written mystery and I didn't figure it out until it was revealed. We learn more about Seth's military past, and it was fun to follow the writers visiting for the retreat: two sets of writer couples and the college student. I recommend this book and series to any reader who enjoys a good mystery, or a writer who would enjoy reading about a writers' retreat. As usual, I look forward to the next book in the series!

I received an advance copy of this book. This review contains my honest thoughts and opinions.

I started reading books by Lynn Cahoon not that long ago and are loving each book I come by. The charaters and plot were well-developed. I can't wait to read my next Lynn Cahoon book.

Seth's planned a great hike for Cat's writer's group. Unfortunately, they find the body of one of his old Army pals- who Seth thought died 10 years ago in Germany. Huh? Cat, Seth, Uncle Tony, Shauna, and now Uncle Tony's girlfriend Shirley, are on the case! Turns out he's been living more or less off the grid on his gold claim, but he's also been getting money deposited in his bank account each month. The two couples in town for the writer's retreat are part of the mystery, as are some of Seth's old Army buddies. Don't worry if you haven'r read the earlier books- you should be fine with this as a standalone because Cahoon gives you relevant info about the recurring characters . Thanks to Netgalley for the ARC. It's a well done cozy with some nice twists.

This may be the best book in the series yet! I love this series as the characters are easily related to and the plots are always interesting as well as intriguing. The characters draw you and feel like old friends almost immediately with well established personalities and traits. The interactions between the characters is equally humorous, endearing and desirable. In this installment someone seems to be after Seth's military friends and it is spilling over to the retreat that the gals have going on this week. They need to wrap this mystery up quickly before one of them is next on the hitlist of the killer! If you haven't read the series, you absolutely need to start at the beginning as each book builds upon the experiences of the last, besides it will extend your enjoyment that much longer!

Cat is at it again in the lastest “Cat Latimer Mystery” from Lynn Cahoon, A Field Guide To Homicide coming January 28th from Kensington Books. This time at least the body isn’t in her shop, and she’s not being accused of murder, thankfully!

Why is it everywhere Cat goes a body is sure to follow? This time someone is murdered up in the hills, and the only reason Cat is involved because she showed up with her newest writers retreat guests and discovered the body. In the newest addition to this literary series, Cat walks a fine line between staying out of the investigation, and diving in headfirst.

Characters in this series, including Seth Uncle Pete, and Shauna are well established, but readers are still learning more about who they are as individuals. Each person involved brings a new twist to the story and allows the reader to enjoy the action and the read. A literary series steeped in writing and learning can sometimes be annoying, but Lynn Cahoon knows how to keep the story and the action moving. There are plenty of suspects with a motive that could apply to all of them.

In the end, Cat finds the killer. The question of who-done-it is never really in doubt; it’s the why that sets this book apart. The ending will leave readers smiling and looking forward to the next installment in this literary series. I am happy to recommend A Field Guide To Homicide to those looking for a fast, fun read that won’t leave them in a lurch.

A good addition to a pleasant series. The usual characters with the typical addition of the writers group. That makes it sound as if this is the same old, same old, but in fact it most definitely is not. A reunion, old secrets, and a surprising dead body all add to the intrigue.

A Field Guide to Homicide is the 6th book in the Cat Latimer Mystery series written by Lynn Cahoon. This series does not disappoint.

Cat Latimer is a writer of YA fantasy books and with her friend, Shauna, and boyfriend, Seth, run a writer’s retreat each month.

I liked that we found out more about Seth’s military past. Shauna is working on moving on from Kevin’s death, and Seth is trying to deal with all the new occurrences in town and the surrounding area.

Excellent book. Well-written, plotted and great characters. This series just gets better and better.
I look forward to each addition.

This story centers around a small college town. Cat Latimer opens her house as a writer’s retreat. Each retreat hosts professional writers and one student from the college. Cat has a history at the college and with residents of the town. Her uncle is also chief of police. While on a hike with the writers, Cat discovers a body in the woods. She calls in her uncle to investigate. The victim is an old Army buddy of Cat’s boyfriend, Seth. The man was declared dead while in the military. Seth is flabbergasted to learn the man was living incognito so close to Seth all of these years. Coincidentally, Seth’s military buddies are in town for a reunion. And Cat, once again, gets involved in solving the murder. This time with her uncle’s approval. This is the sixth in a series of books. They all have the same basic premise. But, they are all entertaining.

Cat Latimer Mystery #6

Cat is hosting a different type of writer's retreat this time. Couples. 2 couples, 1 odd college student and Uncle Pete's girlfriend, Shirley. It seems like everyone and his brother are jumping on the writing bandwagon!

Seth is overwhelmed with planning an outing for the group, doing airport runs and prepping for his military unit's reunion.

Hiking local Colorado mountains and venturing into mining claims turns into finding a dead body and not just anybody, but a friend of Seth's from the military. The one who died in the war. Chance had been living off the grid for all these years and no one knew. Or did they? And why did he fake his death?

Everyone is acting odd at this retreat. Including Seth and Shauna. And of course, our Cat is going to stick her pert little nose into this mystery and find out what her man is hiding and who killed his friend.

This is my favorite book so far. The characters are well-formed and are continually growing and evolving. There are really tough topics tucked in these mysteries and I always learn something new while being thoroughly entertained. With Ms. Cahoon that is a given.

Lynn Cahoon is back with the 6th book in the Cat Latimer series, A Field Guide to Homicide. I have really enjoyed this series based in Colorado at Cat's writer's retreat. This book focused less on the retreat participants and more on Cat's romantic partner Seth. During a hike they find a body of a man that Seth was in the Army with, the twist is he believed that man had died years before in Germany while they were deployed there. Cat, Seth and her Uncle Pete the town's police deputy need to discover what really happened in Germany? and who killed him now? Stakes rise when Seth's army buddies come to town for a reunion and strange incidents begin happening. There's also the struggles between Cat and Seth due to their romantic history and the future together. Cat doesn't want things to change and Seth's afraid to open up. In the end they have some choices to make. All in all this is a solid mystery. I wish there were a few more twists, more potential suspects and more involvement with the retreat participants, as they really didn't add too much to the story this time. Yet, if Seth is one of your favorite characters in this series and you love his relationship with Cat you will adore this book.

It is writers' retreat at Cat Latimer's home in Aspen Hills, Colorado again. This week is a unique week in that the participants although all signed up individually but are two married couples giving the retreat a different atmosphere. The college student participating from Covington College is a young man. Cat and her business partner, Shauna, are ready for the group with activities planned and good food in the works. Since it is late October, Seth, Cat's boyfriend and the retreat's handyman, has a hike planned for the group. It is perfect weather for a hike with the cool weather around the corner and the attendants are enjoying it with lots of photo shoots until a body is seen in the distance. The body turns out to be that of Seth's Army buddy, supposedly dead from an incident while they were in Germany. How can he have been alive for ten years and Seth not know? Now, Cat and Seth, along with Police Chief Pete, Cat's uncle, have a mystery to solve. Uncle Pete's girlfriend Shirley is visiting from Alaska and Pete is busy with a murder. Shirley joins with the gang to help solve the case, which turns out to be a long complicated situation that puts Cat and Seth in danger and is not solved until the end. This is a great addition to the series. There is another fun event that I don't want to go into detail about. You just have to read and see.
I received a complimentary ARC from Kensington Books through NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are mine only.

This is the sixth book in the Cat Latimer series and it does not disappoint. Cat, a YA writer, runs a writer’s retreat with her best friend Shauna and her boyfriend Seth. More often than not, when the writers come in, Cat’s Uncle Pete ends up investigating a murder. This time, the crew finds a body while taking the writers on a hike. When the body turns out to belong to an old military buddy of Seth’s who died years before, things get interesting.

I love the friendships in his series and seeing the progression of the characters. This book is a high note for the series and I really enjoyed it.

I am thankful to NetGalley for the free electronic copy of the book in exchange for an honest review.

Lynn Cahoon hits a home run with A Field Guide to Homicide (Cat Latimer Mystery #6). As a fan of the her Tourist Trap mystery series, I've mostly hung in patiently with this series as the quality of the store lines has varied. While this book does involve a mystery at Cat's writer's retreat, it takes a bit of a back seat to the development of the main and recurring characters in this series, setting up potential plot lines for the future. In this novel we learn the Seth, Cat's boyfriend, served in Iraq and is participating in a local reunion with members of his platoon. Seth is shocked to find that one of his brothers, thought long dead was actually alive and local, although now he's a murder victim. Cat comes to learn much more about her boyfriend's past than she ever knew before and it prompted to look closely at their relationship, past, present and future. Uncle Pete's also evaluating his relationships, as former sheriff Shirley comes from Alaska for a visit. How does this affect his niece and should he be more with Cat in using her investigative talents? Shauna is still trying to dig her way out of grief, but is working hard on her cookbook and seems to be keeping secrets from best friend Cat. While the murder mystery was alway lurking in the background, it was refreshing to see the author providing more background for these central characters. I expect this will enrich future novels and look forward to how the next one plays out.

This is another great read in this series. This time the retreat has two couples. Interesting characters that give Cat some different feelings about her author events. Add Seth's army reunion and a body of a friend he thought was killed years ago. A mystery and a murder to solve. Plus add love developments. Enjoyable read

Short Review, great book get it on the publishing date 28 Jan 2020, a little more detailed below.

4 1/2 stars
The Cat Latimer Mystery series is currently one of my favorite cozy mystery series and I was lucky enough to get an ARC from NetGalley, in exchange for a fair review. In the first five books I rated four of the books 4 star, one 3 1/2 stars and now this latest 4 1/2 stars. Why the slight bump? The book I rated 3 1/2 was rated as to fears I had for the series moving forward and a character I don't care for. This book is rated higher because everyone of my favorite characters, the reason the series is one of my favorites all have prominent roles in the book. Cat the main character, Seth, Shauna, Uncle Pete and Shirley and they all act like intelligent adults. None run off doing something stupid or keeping information from each other, two things that make me cringe in a cozy mystery even Mrs. Rice the snooping side character. Took off 1/2 star because one of my favorite things about the writers retreat is when they actually talk about the process of writing or the business side of being an author and that didn't happen until 1/4 to 1/3 of the way in. But it does happen, I just had to wait awhile to get there.

The series wide story moves along nicely in this book, with some old problems getting resolved and new issues opening up. I'd highly recommend this book with the caveat that if you enjoy cozies you read the series in order, not that you have to this stands on it's own just fine but you'll get more enjoyment from the book if you get to know the characters across the series.

Cat Latimer is a writer and runs a writer’s retreat group at her large home periodically. This time they find a body on a hike the first rattle out of the box. He’s someone Seth knew and thought was already dead years prior. This becomes the mystery of the day and Cat tries to solve it. Meanwhile, the writer’s group seems to be different from previous groups. It’s an interesting story and I enjoyed it.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from NetGalley. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

A Field Guide to Homicide is book #6 in the Cat Latimer series and is the best so far! And I loved them all! Cat and Shauna own a Writer's Retreat. One week a month Cat opens her home to 5 writers including a local college student. This adds a lot to the story. Cat's boyfriend, Seth, is a handyman and helps with the retreats and Cat's Uncle Pete is the town's Police Deputy. In this book, Seth's army buddies are in town for a reunion along with the retreat visitors. They all keep things interesting after the retreat group finds a body on a hike and it turns out to be someone Seth knew from his military days. This was an awesome cozy mystery with likeable interesting characters, an intriguing cozy mystery, and friendship. What's not to love!

Lynn Cahoon’s series remind me of Rita Mae Brown’s. Her Tourist trap series is lighter while Cat Latimer series fill like it has more depth. Love them both. This time it is Seth’s past that brings the mystery. An old fried who died in Germany is found dead back in his hometown.
