I am a huge fan of this series, and I was not disappointed when I began A Field Guide to Homicide.
This book is a little different from the previous books. The writers usually get more involved but this time they didn’t. The mystery seemed more personal this time, as it involved Cat’s significant other, Seth.

I would love to join them on a retreat and maybe do a little investigating myself.
Be sure to add this to your TBR pile!

This is my favorite Lynn Cahoon series. The characters are so well developed and the storyline is cleverly plotted. This book was a little different than the earlier books, but only because the retreat didn't seem as prominent. As always I'm anxiously awaiting the next book in this series.

Thank you to NetGalley and Kensington Publishing Corp. for the opportunity to read A Field Guide to Homicide in exchange for an honest review.

Kat Latimer is hosting her once monthly Warm Springs Writer's Retreat in Colorado. Her friend is once again working her magic in the kitchen and writing her cookbook. Kat's boyfriend Seth Howard is having a reunion with former army buddies.

This retreat is different from the previous ones that Kat hosted in that they are 2 couples. Sydney and Tristin Evans write a travel blog. Archer and Jocelyn Winchester are an slightly older couple who write western historical fiction. Covington College always has one student take part per retreat and this time it's Brodie Capone who is writing young adult fantasy.

Of course, it would't be retreat week without a murder. As Uncle Pete likes to point out, that you always know when it's retreat week because the bodies turn up. This time it's an old army buddy of Seth's that has turned up dead - again. He was already declared dead 10 years ago in Germany but now they're not sure what happened. Terry and Joey also from their army buddy group are very interested in Chance McAllister, did they kill him? Why are they so interested in Seth all of a sudden? Once again danger arrives at the retreat, will Kat, her friends and guests figure out what is happening before someone really gets hurt.

Hoping Ms. Cahoon has the next installment of the series soon as there was a lot of interesting 'what will happen next' moments left at the end of the book.

While I've read this author before, it was one of her other series. I did enjoy this one as well even though I jumped in at book #6. The characters are interesting and I liked the setting of a writer's retreat. I look forward to finding more in this series.

Thank you to the publisher, the author and NetGalley for my eARC in exchange for an honest review.

Cat, with her boyfriend Seth, and their friend Shauna run a writer's retreat. Aspiring authors as well as kids from the local college participate in the retreat. It isn't all work, they get to go hiking and spend time discovering what the area has to offer, including a dead body. The body happens to be an army buddy of Seth's that was declared dead a decade earlier in Germany. Seth is thrown for a loop as he realizes that Chance didn't die in Germany and has been living just a few miles away for the last 10 years.

Cahoon writes fun books, with solid, well written characters. They are enjoyable people to spend time with. This book had a different format than most mysteries. We were unable to spend much time investigating, but the book kept moving with a lot of time spent on the retreat and little nuggets of information about the murder dropped in to peak our interest. Thank you #NetGalley for allowing me to read #AFieldGuidetoHomicide for my honest review.

Cat has a couples retreat that isn't going as planned. Seth's army buddies come into town for a reunion. An army friend he thought had died 10 years ago turns up dead- again, and Cat and Seth are plunged into an investigation. I like how their relationship is developing- it has it's ups and downs but they're going strong in their support of each other. Wish the now homeless dog's story had an ending, instead of leaving us to wonder if the dog was adopted or left to die at the shelter.
And i was a little sad to see Cat refer to her friend Jessica as "former friend"- i was hoping that once Cat had realized how much her hurt her and how in the wrong she was they would patch up their friendship.

A Field Guide to Homicide is the sixth book in the Cat Latimer series. I've fallen in love with the cast of characters as they fumble through their sometimes complicated lives. The addition of each book's visitors to the author's retreat adds to the ensemble. I'm usually pretty good at figuring out who the killer is when I read a mystery but she had me stumped until the very end. My only regret is that Cat Latimer isn't a real person and I can't stay overnight at her house.

A Field Guide to Homicide Is the 6th instalment in the Cat Latimer mystery series by Lynn Cahoon. As always I found this story to be a quick and enjoyable read. I love this series and was super happy to get an Advanced Readers Copy.

Cat Latimer and her writer’s retreat group go on a hiking trip—but a murderer has been lurking off the beaten path . . .

Cat’s sweetheart, Seth, is going all out on an outing into the local mountains—for the benefit of the writing group Cat’s hosting at her Colorado B&B. But when they try to identify some plant and animal life, they find death instead. The body belongs to a man with a gold claim a few miles away. Instead of striking it rich, he’s been struck down.

To his surprise, Seth recognizes the victim from his military days—and up to now believed he’d already died during his last tour of duty. Now Cat has to solve this mystery before the killer takes a hike . . .

I love the main set of characters Cat, Shauna, Seth and Uncle Pete they feel like family/friends. The characters are well developed and interesting. One thing I like about this series is that we get a look at writing as a profession and what authors have to do to get published.

I was pulled in from the very beginning and didn’t stop till the end. The mystery was well plotted and moved along at an even pace. There are only a few suspects for the murder and you find yourself second guessing on who the murder can be. Overall I found this to be a great story.

I highly recommend this series to all my cozy friends.

I requested and received an Advanced Readers Copy from Kensington Publishing and NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.

This is the sixth book in the Cat Latimer mystery series by Lynn Cahoon.

Cat Latimer , published author of a number of popular young adult fantasy novels, supplements her income and runs a popular writer’s retreat in her bed and breakfast. Her boyfriend, Seth has a reunion with some of his military buddies and when they go to the retreat during a hiking trip, one of his ole mates he thought to be dead was dead again!

When her Uncle Pete investigates the crime, he makes Seth one of the main person’s of interest. Cat needs to make sure that Seth is cleared of the crime all the while trying to put on a successful writer’s retreat.

Lynn Cahoon never ceases to captivate us with her storytelling. I was enthralled the entire way through. The ending is pretty nice and I won’t spoil it here. Just make sure you read all the way to the end for a delightful treat!

In this installment, the guests weren’t so much the focus as was many of the recurring characters like Shirley from Alaska who is sweet on Cat’s Uncle Pete and of course, Seth and his buddies from the military.

This was just a great book all around. I love this writers retreat mystery. It always makes me want to pull out my notebook and start writing down story ideas.

If you love a good cozy mystery, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.

I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.

A Field Guide to Homicide is the 6th book in the Cat Latimer Mystery series written by Lynn Cahoon. The book will be published in January 2020, but I am participating on an upcoming blog tour, so I received an early copy. In this series, ~30ish Cat runs a writer's retreat in Colorado with her best friend Shauna and boyfriend Seth. Cat is a writer who formerly taught at a local college. Her uncle is a police detective, and she has several friends around town who help her solve crimes on the side.

In this caper, Seth's unwilling to discuss his days in the army. He'd joined while he and Cat dated the first go-round (before her marriage, divorce, and the death of her mobster husband -- happened all before the series began, I'm not spoiling anything). When some of his platoon visit Colorado, one ends up dead... and Cat's worried that this person had a journal detailing information about her former husband and current life. Then they find out the dead guy might still be alive, or that he faked his death at one point in the past -- very intriguing indeed!

As a mystery, it was unique in terms of how it was told and what actually happened. We knew little of the background or murder weapon, but we had to solve it along with Cat. We didn't get to investigate the actual core group of friends who might be guilty, as Seth kept her away from them. Cat worked with her uncle's girlfriend, a former cop, to investigate people that had some connection to the dead guy, at least since he'd returned to Colorado and lived on the network. To me, this mystery had some fascinating components, but it also felt like several things had been left out... items that would've made it stronger or pop more.

That said, the side stories more than made up for it. Cat's writer retreat in this book was clever and separate from the murders. Without that piece, we really got to know everyone and enjoy the lessons and writing tips being offered by the author. The sub-plots shined in this book, so I was glad to see a different style. The personal lives of all the main characters also move forward in various ways, which made me happy. I enjoy cozies where the author creates a truly imaginable world other than the murder mysteries. And I feel like I know this town quite well!

The writing is good. The characters are vivid, clear, and diverse. Cat's personality is a fine balance of bull-dog and reticence. Sometimes I think she and Seth don't really mesh well, but truthfully, they do... they don't have a fairy-tale or storybook romance; they have a realistic one, ripe with problems and drama, fights and misunderstandings. That's a good element to use, and Cahoon does well without making it overdone or weak. She's strong at balancing those components in her works.

While not my favorite of the series, it kept me interested and I liked the momentum in the town and the story. Looking forward to more in 2020.

I need to catch up on this series, but it's always nice to visit with Cat and Seth.. The series is fun, with well developed characters and continually gets stronger. Liked the military theme with the murder being outside the retreat for a change.

This is one of my favourite cozy series and it hasn’t disappointed me. A Field Guide to Homicide by Lynn Cahoon was an excellent addition to the Cat Latimer series. I was wrapped up in the mystery from the first chapter.

I love visiting with Cat, Seth, Shauna and Uncle Pete as they are so well developed that I feel like I'm among friends each time I open a book in this series. Ms. Cahoon's story is different from the previous books as this retreat practically runs itself as the writers are two married couples and one student and the murder victim is not part of the retreat. Seth has a bigger part in this one than in previous books as he knew the victim at one time. A quickly paced plot with several deft twists, limited suspects, Shauna comes to Seth's rescue and a sweet romantic ending makes this one book that I couldn't put down.

I received a free copy of A FIELD GUIDE TO HOMICIDE (Cat Latimer Mystery Series Book 6) by Lynn Cahoon in exchange for an honest review. Cat Latimer’s hosting another writer’s retreat. This time, Seth, Cat’s boyfriend, is taking an even bigger role in the nonwriting activities; Seth takes the group on a hike through the local countryside. When the writing group stops for a break at a planned scenic rest area, Cat spots something unusual in the vista - a body part protruding from beneath the shrubbery. More mystery than this murder surrounds the deceased; the man was a local soldier who served with Seth in Germany, where the man died a decade ago. Is it possible that Seth’s friend faked his first death and has been hiding in the hills for ten years without letting anyone know he was still alive? Moreover, is the man’s second death related to his first?

I liked this book and enjoy the series. Lynn Cahoon is one of my favorite cozy mystery writers. I recommend this book to fans of Lynn Cahoon, to fans of the series, and to fans of cozy mysteries featuring college towns, outdoor adventures, military intrigue, bed & breakfast settings, and writers.

I have been a big fan of all three of Lynn Cahoon's series, but I have to say that this is, without a doubt, her best book ever. I was completely drawn into the story and could not put it down! Cat Latimer is hosting another writer's retreat and her boyfriend Seth Howard is leading the group on a hike through the nearby mountains when they come across a dead body. Cat's Uncle Pete, the police chief, shocks Seth by telling him that the body was that of one of Seth's old army buddy - Chance McAllister who lived in an old mining shack there. But the problem with that is that Chance was declared dead by the army ten years ago. Unlce Pete draws Cat into the investigation by asking her to read Chance's journal to see if she can pick up any clues and Cat must decipher whether the death is related to something that happened while Chance was still in the army or if it related to the present day. With a compelling plot, wonderful characters, an insider look at writing as a profession and the descriptions of Shauna's delicious food, this book has it all!

Cat Latimer is hosting her latest group of writers at her retreat. Two couples and one college student make for a change in the way the retreat flows, making more time for Cat and Seth to spend together during retreat week. Given the military reunion from Seth’s Army days, this gives cat a chance to meet the men he served with. But when one of the men who died in Germany while they were serving years ago is found recently murdered locally things seem off. Cat believes the visiting men are connected and Seth does not agree. Will Cat and Uncle Pete solve the murder or will Cat and Seth be off for good?

This series gets stronger with each entry. Lynn Cahoon consistently delivers with well developed characters, solid writing, and a solid mystery. Looking forward to seeing what the future holds for Cat and Seth as well as Uncle Pete and Shirley.

I enjoyed this book. This series keeps getting better with each book. The characters are fully developed and fun. I like how they interact with each other. I liked that this retreat is different with couples as writers, the dynamic is certainly different. It was nice that the murder was also outside of the retreat unlike in previous books. The ending was the best. #AFieldGuidetoHomicide #NetGalley
