As many of you have known, this series has a lot of mixed reviews from several people. Even my friend's reviews vary from some liking it to some disliking it and even DNF'ing it. This is one of those books where you either love it or hate it or are somewhere in the middle. At first, I thought that this trilogy would not be for me, I found the first installment, Labyrinth Lost a bit dry, but then I picked up Bruja Born and found redeeming qualities that made me enjoy it. This action packed, fantasy trilogy involves slow burn romances, epic betrayals, and otherworldly magic that all combine to make this a story of major proportions.
I think my biggest problem with this conclusion was the pacing, it was painfully slow at times. I felt that nothing was really happening at all until the second half and even when the plot did take some turns it just wasn’t very exciting or shocking.
My other problem was that this one just didn’t really have the same feel as Bruja Born and felt more like every other YA Fantasy book out there, this was lacking all the uniqueness and creativity that we saw in the second book. On top of that, the world building was almost non-existent in this book. Granted a lot of it is explored in the first book and has already been established but there are still so many questions that I have about the world.. I also felt that I, as the reader, was much more disconnected from the characters and events during this book. I just wasn’t very invested.
I am highly invested in Cordova's writing. It's lush, beautiful and it's something I think I will always crave so I am very much looking forward to a new book of hers.
What can I say? Zoraida Córdova did it again! Wayward Witch is an amazing story. Solid plot. Fluid plot points. What an exciting read. I was sad when this story ended. Zoraida's writing style is so nicely done. I love all of her books.
I need to read the first two books in the series. This is the third book and perhaps I would enjoy it better if read from book one. Saying this... The book kept me on edge of the seat! I loved everything about it. Plot. Thrill. Unique thinking by the authors etc.
I would recommend reading previous books before this one bit again if you read this book you will be fine.

Wayward Witch is the third and final book in the Brooklyn Brujas series and ever since I met Rose when I first read Labyrinth Lost, I knew I couldn’t wait to read about her and her Deathday experience.
On the day of her Deathday, we see how much Rose has been struggling with all the events that happened with her two sisters and how they’ve even changed her magic. There’s a sense of wrongness and she’s unable to figure out what it is but when she tries to discern what it is, she learns some startling news from her father. When she goes to confront him, they are captured and taken to the land of Adas, where Rose has to work with a group of strangers to fight the evil that is destroying the land.
This was such an adventure to read and I truly felt for Rose when she was going through her moments of self doubt. Seeing Rose have to grapple with her new power and try to manage them made me feel for her too. I enjoyed reading about the different characters and watching them learn how to work together and trust each other and you couldn’t help but root for them. One of my favorite characters had to be Lin, a non-binary brujex who was an absolute joy to read because of their quick wit and loving personality.
Because it was so action packed, there were times when I felt it was a bit too fast paced but there were also times when there were just “time jumps”, mostly because the team would be training. That being said, pretty much every emotional scene, whether it was happy, sad or full of anger, I found myself very involved with the story. I mean, I read it in two days! I DEVOURED this book!
I’m honestly very sad that this series is over- reading the sisters adventures was truly a wonderful experience and this series will always have a place in my heart.
Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for providing an eARC in exchange for an honest review. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
Thank you to Edelweiss and the publisher for a chance to review this title ahead of its release date!
Wayward Witch is the third installment to the Brooklyn Bruja series that I have ardently followed since Labyrinth Lost was published. Where LL followed Alex and Bruja Born followed Lula, WAYWARD WITCH follows the youngest sister, Rose.
WAYWARD WITCH takes us back to another world and as we saw in LABYRINTH LOST, young Rose must find a way to work with what she's given and save those she loves. We are first back with the Mortiz family as they try to cope with the events of their father returning and not remembering anything that happened back in the fairy realm. Rose doesn't quite feel like she belongs, even on her own Deathday. But during an argument with her father, both he and Rose are suddenly spirited away to Adas, the fairy realm and find themselves in the center of a land in turmoil. Rose is suddenly forced to work with a group to find the root of evil that is slowly destroying the land. She agrees if only to save her father whom the king is keeping a prisoner in exchange. Along the way, she finds friendship in the ragtag group and even family.
I didn't realize at the time of request that this book is the third in a series. While the author is careful to fill in for those of us who entered the series late, I still think the book would be more enjoyable if it had been read after reading volumes 1 & 2. I like the premise overall, a family of Hispanic witches, but will probably need to go back to read the whole series to really appreciate it.
Absolutely loved this next novel about the third Mortiz sister (Rose.) It really brought to life some of the interior family struggles that the others didn't want to talk about, but Rose couldn't leave alone - she just wanted things to be out in the open! I felt like some of Rose's inner struggles with her emotions and figuring out how to feel about/handle things with her family and her surrounding situation struck really through, right down to wondering how on Earth Alex dealt with keeping clean and finding a place to go to the bathroom in the first book!
Another wonderful story from Zoraida Cordova, with parts that make you laugh and parts that make you wanna cry! Anxiously awaiting more from her.
I absolutely love this book! This book has Caribbean fey and mermaids. The main character is a bisexual bruja who would do anything for her family. There is a nonbinary character that uses they/them pronouns and introduces the gender-neutral word brujex. I love all the representation! The story itself is, of course, amazing as well. I'm a huge fan of this author and this series, so I love this book. There are some story lines that seemed to get dropped or not fully explained, but I'm sure those will be fixed before the finished copy comes out. I thought this was a good ending to the saga of the Mortiz sisters, but I do hope we get a book about Nova in the future!
This is the third book in the Brooklyn Bruja series and in my opinion it’s the strongest so far. This episode follows road who is feeling out of step and daunted by her life and powers. No spoilers but what follows is a cleverly plotted, emotionally resonant story with plenty of action and character development. A thoroughly enjoyable read.
This book was received as an ARC from SOURCEBOOKS Fire in exchange for an honest review. Opinions and thoughts expressed in this review are completely my own.
At first I did not know what to think of this book. As I kept reading it, the pieces of the puzzle started to come together and it was quite the intriguing story. Rose blinded by the lies of her father's past is unknowingly aware of her secret powers and then she is transported to the land of Adas confided by a group of teens with similar powers and forced to save Adas. While unaware of the stakes, all Rose wants to do is find out why her and how can she control her new powers. In order to save her family, Rose must save Adas and heal all that ails everyone. I have been looking for a new YA/Fantasy series to intensely read and I hope this becomes a series because the reader (or at least me) was left hanging at the end.
We will consider adding this title to our YA collection at our library. That is why we give this book 5 stars.
I wasn't aware that this was the third book in a series. I probably should have done a bit more research into before requesting but as it didn't state that on here I automatically presumed.
I dont know if I will have time to read the first 2 books before this is released. If I do I will come back an amend this review.
It is 12:35am and I just finished this book....which I started this morning (it didn’t take all day lol I had to work) and I am SHOOK! I was not ready for this....brujex, fairies, the rot and finding the meaning of family. When Rose’s Deathday celebration arrives she should be happy but something seems amiss in her family but only she seems to feel it. In her efforts to find the problem she opens a whole world , like a whole actual world, of other problems. This books is a song of acceptance, that family isn’t always about blood and that believing in yourself will always lead to your success. I laughed, I cried and I cheered and now I am going to bed!
