I have read other books by this author and they all have made me cry.
This book is heartbreaking and thought provoking.
This is beautifully written and makes you think about what you would do in a similar situation.
A real heartbreaking page turner. Rachel is great character and I love the way she befriends her ex husband's new wife to get through to him. The story is compelling and one that will stay with you long after you have finished reading it.
This is a big emotional read that takes an unexpected turn when Rachel bonds with her ex-husband's new wife Eva. Emily, the sweet little daughter of Rachel and James is very ill and this trio is able to get past their anger, resentment, and fear to help her. Thanks to netgalley for the ARC. A good read.
Kate Hewitt (one of my favourite authors) writes gut-tugging, heart-wrenching fiction and from the outset it was clear that A Hope for Emily was a page-turner I’d find hard to set down. Little Emily is only four years old but has sadly developed an undiagnosed degenerative illness that has left her in a coma. Her mum, Rachel devotes herself to Emily’s care, whilst dad, James makes every effort to be by Emily’s bedside when he can. But the strain of caring for a very poorly child is immense and when Emily’s condition deteriorates even further, James’s new wife, Eva is drawn further into the family circle.
A Hope for Emily explores the lengthens a mum will go to, in the belief she is doing what is best for her child. One aspect I found refreshing, was the relationship that develops between Rachel and Eva. Too often in the press and fiction, women are pitched against each other, and in A Hope for Emily it felt true that Eva would recognise a mum pushed to the limits and wish to help. Be prepared for a sad but utterly beautiful emotional read.
Be prepared when you pick up this book to shed tears. This story is told by Rachel (the mother of Emily) & Eva (married to James, Rachel's ex husband). Rachel and James' daughter Emily has been very ill and is being moved to a palliative care unit, despite many treatments Emily is in a coma. Trying not to lose hope Rachel wants to take Emily to Italy to have a experimental treatment done to see if it would help little Emily.
Rachel, James and Eva have been through so much hurt, when they come together to help Emily, a new friendship is formed between Rachel and Eva. This is beautifully written story, with characters that are likable, secrets, hopes for the future. I did find a couple parts stretched on and I would have loved to have seen where Rachel's and Andrew's relationship will head.
This is a must read. I have now added a couple more of Kate Hewitt's books to my to-be-read list. After this book I need a feel good happy book to read.
A heatwreching story about a terminally I'll little girl and her mothers fight to get treatment. Rachel is determined to fight for her little girl Emily who has a rare neurological illness. With the help of her ex husband's new wife Eva she embarks on a journey to Italy to try new therapy. A beautifully written , heartbreaking book I couldn't put down I love Kate Hewitt and she does it again with this novel.
This book absolutely broke me. It tore my heart in tiny pieces. Such a sad but utterly compelling read. This is a book that will stay with me.
This is a Really good book. It's about a five year old little girl called Emily.
She has a very rare illness, and her mother will do almost anything to find a cure.
Rachel is the mum of Emily. She's divorced husband because they weren't getting along.
Her husband remarried a woman called Eva. Rachel befriends Eva, and asks if she will talk to her husband, as he's Emily's dad. He goes to see Emily in hospital, as Emily in in ICU.
I will not tell you the illness, you can find this out for yourself.
It's a real page turner. I'm 3/4 of the way through the book. And now it's starting to get really Sad and gripping.
I highly recommend this book to all you ladies out there, who likes a Really good read.
Holy heckballs that was emotionally draining! A mother with a child who unexplainably and slowly falls into a persistive vegetative state. She doesn't have answers, but she has hope. An ex-husband who seems to have checked out of the relationship with the wife and his daughter...but that's not really fair to say either. He is just farther along in the process of acceptance and letting go. The ex-husband's new wife, who has a tenuous relationship with him due to the fact that he won't include her in anything to do with his child. She can't ask questions, she can't offer an opinion, and he won't let her offer any support. Then comes an experimental treatment that the mother is all for, but the father sees no point - and they have joint decision making for her medical care. And therein lies the story of all three of them. It was heartaching, for there can be no winners in this.
A really sad heartwarming story about an ill child in between two separated parents and a relationship developing with the new wife. Very sweet and a lovely story of relationships and likeable characters.
Incredibly heartbreaking!!!! I could barely see through the tears while finishing this book! Rachel, Eva, and James all voice their opinions and heartfelt emotions so clearly and openly.... the raw emotion was incredible!!!
I’m literally spent after this book! Well done!
This was a very sand story about a child with a terminal illness. I cried my eyes out. Author really made you feel the story!
Very sad and overwhelming story of a terminal child, her parents and the husbands new wife. The drama was too much for me. I stopped reading. I didn’t feel a connection cold be made.
A really emotional rollercoaster as this story is heartbreaking but beautiful in equal measure When Rachel gets her longed for child little does she know what is round the corner for her when her beloved daughter suddenly deteriorates with a mystery illness As she struggles to accept the diagnosis and her marriage falls apart she finds herself being helped by his new wife and they share their thoughts and feelings they are drawn together in painful circumstances A tear jerker but beautifully written with great sensitivity A great read
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an advanced copy of ‘A Hope for Emily’ by Kate Hewitt in exchange for an honest review.
The premise of ‘A Hope for Emily’ by Kate Hewitt is heartbreaking. A young girl with in a state of unresponsive wakefulness, a difference of opinion on course of treatment between two parents, struggling to let go and move on without losing hope for a miracle.
I struggled reading this novel. I felt for Rachel and James and wanted a diagnosis and recovery for Emily. I felt a disconnect with the characters though there were some redeeming moments for each character.
As with any Kate Hewitt novel that I’ve read, there were tears - lots of them. Even though I didn’t particularly enjoy the journey through the novel, I had more emotion than I anticipated at the end.
A Hope for Emily is an emotional story. It will break your heart and you will love it. The characters are well developed and the story is well written. Grab a tissue and this book and hold on.
James & Rachel loved their daughter Emily. It was a joy watching her grow, so it was a huge shock when she was four years old & began to show disturbing symptoms. Over the next couple of years things go from bad to worse. Nobody can actually discover what is wrong with Emily & after extensive tests their lovely child lies unresponsive. Unsurprisingly James & Rachel's marriage suffers until James decides he can no longer compete in the 'Who cares the most' competition Rachel has pushed himself into. After their split he quite quickly marries Eva. James keeps his life very compartmentalised. He never voluntarily speaks about Emily & Eva feels shut out- especially as she longs for a child herself. When there is a ghost of a chance of helping Emily, Rachel wants to grab it & the surprisingly Eva is the one who can help her to do so.
This was a really heart breaking story. The relationship between Eva & Rachel is a very interesting one. James was not the most sympathetic of characters, (I wondered what on earth Eva saw in him!) however on the whole I could see everyone's point of view in this no-win situation. This is a well written tale well worth five stars. Thanks to Netgalley & the publisher for letting me read & review this book.
This is an engrossing and heartbreaking story . I loved how the relationship developed between Emily's Mam and her stepmam, It is a well written book requiring a box of tissues. Highly recommended
I was given an ARC from NetGalley in return for an honest review.
A difficult book to read as a mother, due to the heart wrenching subject matter. However it is beautifully written with the story being narrated from two different voices. The author takes the reader on a sad journey and makes you feel involved with the characters.
I particularly liked the relationship which develops between Rachel, the mother and Eva, the stepmother. It was very credible and honest.
This was my first book written by Kate Hewitt but I will certainly read more from her.
I received an ARC copy of this book from Net Galley in exchange for my honest opinion of it. The most terrible words a parent can hear from their doctor regarding their child "there is nothing else we can do".
