Kendra is very good at her job and she works very hard to help others. Her senses are extra sensitive and in tune to her surroundings because she was blind for many years of her life, and she feels that allows her to see and hear things that others do not. Before she got her sight, she went to a school for the blind, so she has a special place in her heart for them. When two staff members from the school are murdered, the crime becomes personal to her. But it will not be easy for her to solve it. In fact it will be very dangerous for her.
The characters are well developed and well rounded. Kendra has very strong opinions and she doesn’t like it when others disagree with her. I felt that she was a little too argumentative a lot of the time and I got a little tired of it. She especially likes to argue with Adam, her partner and their bickering and banter was very entertaining. The best character in the book was the dog, Harley, he stole the show.
There is so much suspense and tension in this book, and there are so many twists and turns, that sometimes I did not know if I was coming or going. At times I was afraid to keep reading because I did not know what was going to happen next.
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a suspenseful romantic book. If you enjoy fast paced action, check this book out.
In HINDSIGHT by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen, Kendra Michaels, blind for most of her life, taught herself to develop her other senses more fully. After her vision was surgically restored, she had incredible skills and the FBI uses her like a secret weapon.
When it is said you cannot go home again, it is often true. For Kendra, this statement is painful for more than one reason. Blind since birth, Kendra spent two decades honing her other senses. Now that her sight has been restored due to a remarkable procedure, Kendra has developed exceptional investigative skills. Skills used by the police, CIA and FBI, no matter how reluctant Kendra may be to assist.
When Kendra was a child, she went to a school for the blind. It was at this very school that some of the staff members have been murdered. None of the MOs match, yet Kendra is positive they are all connected. If she is correct, she is hunting a serial killer. If not, then there just might be other killers at large. Will Kendra be able to get to the bottom of things before her very life comes into jeopardy?
As before, Kendra is not alone in her search. There is Adam Lynch, former FBI agent and off and on love interest of Kendra's. Then there are good friends Olivia and Jessie, with Jessie's job as a private investigator proving quite useful. Also, FBI Special Agent in Charge Michael Griffin is on the case. For readers like me, recurring characters and continuity really connects me to all of the various series that I enjoy reading.
When you factor in the connection to Kendra's past, what is happening at the school now, the search for killers while hoping no one else has to die, you have the makings of a very good story. The fact that it was a fast-paced story with surprising twists and turns and a shocking conclusion all came together to make Hindsight an excellent addition to the Kendra Michaels series.
Many thanks to Grand Central Publishing and to NetGalley for this ARC for review This is my honest opinion.
Kendra Michaels is back trying to find out who killed the two people at her former school. ARC from NetGalley.
The Kendra Michaels series by Iris and Roy Johansen has been one of my favorites as I love the character Kendra Michaels - well normally. You know-how in a TV series when the main characters finally get together "officially" or at least end up sleeping with one another and then you see a lull in the series as that hidden chemistry disappears and the whole environment feels like it has changed and normally at that point in the series - the TV series you know will be coming to an end. That's how I felt with Hindsight as Kendra still did her amazing deductions and detective skills which I love and I still want to know how she knew the general had red underwear - the question was never answered in the book. Her relationship though with Lynch annoyed me as they had this whole back and forth going on and it was love/hate and lots of angst on Kendra's side. The murders took part at her old school which was a school for special needs which I loved but then I was disappointed with the whole reasoning behind why they were murdered and then there was the dog Harley who howled like a Lion. I liked his storyline but then again he felt like he was added - just because they needed to add something else which overall made the plot of Hindsight feel super busy for me. One of my favorite side -characters in Hindsight though was Agent Metcalfe with his presentations and his geekiness and I had to laugh when they added about the Pop Funkos as I am a major Funko fan myself. Overall, I think readers should only read this one if they are a big fan of Kendra Michaels and wanting to continue the series.
I love Iris Johansen books, specifically those about Eve Duncan, Catherine Ling, Kendra Michaels, and Margaret Douglas. Hindsight is all about Kendra Michaels with our favorite returning characters: Metcalf, Griffin, Jessie, Olivia, and of course Lynch. The sexual tension between Kendra and Lynch is stronger than ever in this book, which is definitely to be expected.
The story briefly starts out with continuing the story that was left, unfinished when it comes to Brock Limited in Double Blind. But as I said, it is very brief and still leaves you hanging. It starts with Kendra in Afghanistan with Lynch and Jessie trying to take Brock Limited down, but than Kendra is sent back to the States and is manipulated into a case with the FBI and Metcalf and Griffin. Once Kendra starts working on the case with the FBI, Brock Limited is only briefly mentioned here and there throughout the book and still leaves you hanging on what is going to happen next with them. Maybe the next Kendra Michaels book will complete the Brock Limited story.
The case that Kendra takes on with the FBI provides more insight into Kendra and makes the title of "Hindsight" so perfect for the book. The case takes place at Woodward Academy at Oceanside, which is the Academy for the blind that both Kendra and Olivia attended and sometimes visit for presentations. There were two victims, Mr. Kim who was the gardener at Woodward Academy, and Elaine who was a teacher. Both Kendra and Olivia had known Mr. Kim and Elaine from when they had attended the academy.
Kendra is seen as a "superstar" at Woodward Academy because she gained her eye sight back through surgery and what she has since done with her life by working with special needs children and helping the FBI. Kendra's life, according to Layla (current PE teacher), has caused the children to have what she considers to be unrealistic life goals and hope. This causes quite a bit of tension between Layla and Kendra when Kendra goes to Layla with questions about Elaine.
The story has some action and some of Kendra's deduction skills, but not as much as I am used to with an Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen story. Kendra's use of deduction during cases with the FBI is usually used quite frequently during past books. You really see her use her deduction skills in about three different instances and the first instance is quite funny with the "red briefs".
There are some new characters that are introduced in the book and hopefully the character of Harley will be reoccurring. Harley is a failed seeing eye dog that Elaine was trying to train and help find a new home with. Harley has a traumatic past and a bark that sounds like a Lion. He is a gentle giant but his bark makes him seem more aggressive than he is. Harley turns out to play a pretty prominent role in this story. I actually ended up falling in love with his character the more he became important to the plot. He adds some great humor which helps break up the sadness and hurt that Kendra are going through with the loss of Mr. Kim and Elaine. There is one part of the story though that involves Harley that I felt was left unfinished when Olivia, Kendra, and Harley were meeting with Praxidice (Goddess of Justice) at Woodward Academy.
Rating: I often times give Iris Johansen books either a 4 or a 5 and I so want to give this book at least a 4, but my instinct says I should give it a 3. So, I am rating this book a 3 because I felt that there was part of the story that was left unfinished with Harley. I also feel like bringing Brock Limited into the story and than not completing it was not necessary and that Kendra could have gotten involved with the FBI case another way other than through manipulation. I am really hoping that the next Kendra Michaels book completes the Brock Limited story that was started back in Double Blind.
Another fantastic read from the Johansen family :) Kendra is a favorite character and she doesn't disappoint in this story as she works to solve a murder that is closer to her heart.
Two staff members have been murdered at a school for the blind, where Kendra spent many of her younger years until she received a surgical procedure to restore her sight. She is a well known investigator who has honed all her senses and sharp deductive abilities.
The two victims have no connection other than place of employment and one is stabbed and the other took a bullet to the head. Two killers?
As Kendra throws herself wholeheartedly into the investigation, she unwittingly discovers that she, herself, holds the key to a deadly secret that could make her the target of a killer.
This is a real page turner, suspense starting at the very beginning and holding it's pace until the very unpredictable ending. Although 7th in the series, this is easily read as a stand alone. As always, I recommend starting with the very first book as the recurring characters are memorable.
Many thanks to the author / Grand Central Publishing / Netgalley for the digital copy of this crime fiction. Read and reviewed voluntarily, opinions expressed here are unbiased and entirely my own.

Review copy was received from NetGalley. This does not affect my opinion of the book or the content of my review.
I really have loved this Kendra Michaels series . I have given my rapt attention to Kendra who uses all her senses to deduce what is going on in the world. She often helps the FBI on their cases, reluctantly. There's action, mystery, intelligent casework and a nice group of family and friends.
Adam Lynch is often involved with Kendra's cases and adds sexual tension and humor. I have wanted them to get together but Kendra always has some reason to put him off. The longer this has continued, the more I have tired of it. A person feels what they feel and telling yourself you don't or won't feel is stupid. Now choosing your actions, no matter what you feel is quite normal. But lying to yourself and others about how you feel seems immature.
Kendra also seems to have a god complex. She thinks she knows better, and should not only make her own decisions, but others should do things her way. She is very sharp and often does have better information to make decisions. But when she is on a trip with Adam, in his arena, she gets angry when he decides to protect her. Her temper and childish treatment of him is not cool. Kendra seems to be less careful about her own or others' safety as the series continues.
Kendra only used a bit of her skills in this case. Much of what she did was being very observant and knowledgeable about the place and people. That really helped her in the end. But she was also smart, and worked herself almost endlessly. She needs to spare a thought to her own health.
Similar to Double Blind, Hindsight has a complex case to solve with riveting action. Kendra and her allies work to solve the mystery and catch the really bad guys. Unfortunately, I don't enjoy any of Kendra's personal (or professional) relationships any more, even with Olivia, because of her attitudes.
Another great read by iris Johansson I liked both the story line and the characters. But my favorite series is still the Eve Duncan series. Thanks to Netgalley for letting me review this book
This can be read as a stand alone novel and readers will know what is going on at all times never getting lost.
The Johansen are able to pull readers into their world and keep readers hooked and in need of more.
The story is a perfect flow and the characters are a balance of strong, weak, smart and at times have readers rooting for them.
Kendra Michael is likable as she is uses her abilities to figure out the killers. The world readers are pulled into is a mix of physiological thriller and mystery that will keep readers thinking about the story long after they have put it down.
Thank you to Netgalley and the publisher for the copy of Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen Hindsight
In this latest book in the series, Dr. Kendra Michaels is asked to use her unique powers of observation to investigate a murder at her beloved Woodward Academy. Kendra spent the first twenty years of her life blind before gaining her sight via a revolutionary surgical procedure. Her years at the Academy afforded her an excellent education, lifelong friends, and life skills. Kendra is something of a superstar at the school because she works for the FBI and she gained her sight, Olivia on the otherhand is the real hero because of what she has accomplished while blind. Kendra begins her investigation into two seemingly unrelated staff member murders while trying to protect the students and the Academy. Using her enhanced senses, Kendra sees and smells things that others don't and has an advantage over the other investigators. This ability comes in handy when Kendra becomes a target of the murderer and the police and FBI can't seem to help her.
The books do not have to be read in order, however, the relationship between Kendra and Lynch evolves with each book in the series. I love reading this series! Fast-paced, action-filled, enough suspense to keep me guessing. I look forward to book 8.
I was nervous when I requested this book and was wondering if I would need some background of the characters in order to relate to what was happening. I was thankful that wasn't the case.
Dr. Kendra Michael didn't have eyesight for the first 20 years of her life which allowed her to develop her other senses. This has helped her in her job and is vital to solving the cases in this book.
I am not very familiar with Iris Johansen but she has quickly moved up my list of to read authors. This book had the right amount of mystery/thriller with great characters that made me want to keep turning the pages.
5 Stars
I really enjoyed this book. It really sucks you into the story from the word GO. I didn’t realize Iris Johansen had another series. I think the last book I read by her was in her Eve Duncan forensic series. That is a great series too! Check it out if you haven’t picked up one of Iris’s books in awhile. Definitely worth the read!
This is a whole different series and they are already on book seven. Where have I been? I can’t believe I missed so much yummy goodness! Iris and Roy… what a powerhouse team these two are! I am in love with this series. So happy to have a new series to dive into for 2020!
Kendra used to be blind and a remarkable surgery gave her back her sight. But now she is almost like Sherlock Holmes in how she can ferret out clues and pick up on slight sounds, fragrances and nuances the rest of us miss.
This book centers around the institute where Kendra attended when she was blind. Two beloved teachers are dead and she definitely wants answers in a big way. It was never boring to follow the action and I was engaged the entire way through the book. Love this concept. It is right in my wheelhouse. I learned sign language when I was young and a woman I used to work with was deaf and her husband ran the deaf institute. Not exactly the same handicap but similar in nature, I think.
Don’t want to give too much of this away. The roller-coaster ride is so worth it. Just read this and be in awe!
If you love a good mystery suspense thriller, definitely check this one out. You won’t be disappointed.
I received this as an ARC (Advanced Reader Copy) in return for an honest review. I thank NetGalley, the publisher and the author for allowing me to read this title.
A typical, fun Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen romantic suspense novel which I thoroughly enjoyed. The action, suspense, twists, and turns were really there, and the sparks between Kendra and Adam were, once again, flying.
But my all-time favorite - Harley the dog with unusual issues. I hope he'll be around in future Kendra Michaels books as well.

This is the first book I have read by both Iris and Roy. I have always enjoyed the Eve Duncan novels so I thought I would try this one. I did really like it. However, I should have started with the beginning of the series. While this can be stand alone, I think having the characters develop over the books would have made the read that much better. That being said, it was a great suspenseful book and with a wonderful cast of characters. This book is worth the price of admission.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Hindsight by Iris Johansen and Roy Johansen that I read and reviewed on my own.
This book found Kendra and Lynch trying to solve two murders that took place at the school where she went when she was blind so needless to say this was personal for Kendra because she cared about the people who were killed and she wanted those killers badly. Like most of the Kendra Elliot book she fought the interference from Lynch until she realized how badly she needed him and then the sparks started flying off the pages between them in every way you can think of. These are two of my favorite couples that just need need to face things and be together all the time they are that hot together and I really want to see it soon.
This book was really well written. It even had a special needs assistant dog named Harley that played a very huge part in the story and that was fun to read because with Kendra’s blindness being fixed and her best friend , Olivia, who is blind but very independent no one in these books every seems to need much help so it was fun having a dog in the mix this time. Also, trying to figure out why the two people who were killed was targeted was twist that made this book great.
Hindsight gets five out of five stars from me.
While this seventh novel featuring protagonists Kendra Michaels and Adam Lynch is a well-crafted mystery, the relationship between the main characters is distracting and somewhat unbelievable to a first time reader of the series. That said, the book’s primary story is strong.
Kendra, formerly blind, is drawn back to the Woodward Academy for the Physically Disabled in Oceanside, CA, where she went to school before surgery restored her sight. Now an investigator, she is determined to find out why Elaine Wessler and Ronald Kim, both employees of the Academy, have been found murdered on school grounds. Kendra’s good friend from Woodward, Olivia Moore, who is still blind and the creator of an ‘awesome’ website for the blind called Outasite, joins Kendra’s search for the killer.
The authors fabricate an intriguing mystery with interesting distractions and a comfortable pace. One of the more interesting characters to be introduced is a dog named Harley with an unusual set of issues. A word of advice: it may be beneficial to understanding existing relationships to read earlier books in this series
Reading this book was so fantastic! It does start off pretty soon after the end of the previous book, but then the mystery of this current book is delved into, pretty quickly, given a few factors including how personal it is for Kendra! This was a really awesome read!
Kendra and Lynch have a pretty intense first chapter, and the fallout happens for most of this book. I loved watching them deal with each other while emotions were running pretty high, and not all of them were positive and loving ones, given certain actions that you'll know about right away!
The last book got to be a bit heavy, what with the private military group manipulating things at the expense of the government military. This book is lighter in that regard, there's murder, but it's not quite at the global scale of Double Blind.
How all the different characters got to utilize their strengths in this book was so great to read, especially in the end, Kendra pulls out all the stops, she's creative, and there's this one action that just gets to me! That ending was fantastic to read!
Loved this book so much, it was such a great read, and I can't wait for more of this series!
Hindsight grabbed my attention at the beginning and kept it to the end. Kendra has extreme senses since she was blind for 20 years before a surgery restored her sight. She teaches, but also uses her highly developed senses to help solve cases. Her relationships with the women and men (and a dog) are well developed. The premise is intriguing. Except for a few questions I am left with at the end, Hindsight is a good read.
