This is a very cute book that I purchased to use for story times. My young patrons love anything by Mo Willems as do I.
Another Mo Willems classic, instead of a elephant and piggie. This is a silly story about a tiger who is afraid of worms and worms who are afraid of tigers. It makes for a great read aloud
Finn is OBSESSED with Mo Willems. He is his favorite author. I'm sure any book he writes Finn will love, but this one especially had him cracking up. As usual the artwork is adorable and fun, the characters are great, and the writing is well done and also a lot of fun.
Part of the Elephant & Piggie Like Reading series, this easy reader is about a tiger who is big and brave. In fact, he’s not afraid of anything… except worms. Worms are slimy and wiggly and confusing. Tiger loves flowers, but wait! Flowers grow in dirt, and you know that worms live in dirt. Tiger throws the flowerpot into the air and breaks it. No worms there though. Tiger also loves apples, but wait! Worms love apples too. He throws the apple into the air, splat. No worms in the apple. Then he finds a book, that just might be all about worms. It’s too much for Tiger to take, and he runs off. Now the worms come out of the ground. They discover the dirt, the apples and a nice book. They are scared of tigers usually, but this one seems to have left them all their favorite things. Time for a worm hug to thank him!
Higgins sets just the right pace and tone in this easy reader. The page turns are well done, allowing some sentences to hang between pages, building the suspense. He creates plenty of angst and drama here with so few elements, just flowers, apples and a book. It’s a remarkable feat to have so much emotion about worms.
Higgins’ art is marvelous. With nods to Calvin and Hobbes, Pigeon that appear occasionally, and even a likeness of himself and Willems on the back of the book that should not be missed. Tiger’s emotions show not only in his facial expressions but through his entire body, emoting clearly on the page and drawing children in.
Smart, funny and fast, just what you want in an easy reader. Appropriate for ages 4-6.
This is funny and adorable and has a good lesson about not judging others by appearances or assumptions. The illustrations are wonderful and emotive, and the story is filled with dramatic outbursts that make this a perfect read-aloud book. I chuckled through the whole story, and I don't want to give a synopsis because it's more fun to experience it on your own. One thing, though- worm hugs!

What About Worms!? is a delightful tale that befits the Elephant & Piggie Like Reading series. For all his bravado, Tiger sure is a scaredy cat when it comes to worms. His story shows that sometimes our fears are based on preconceived notions, but when we look at facts and take the time to learn, maybe we don't need to be scared after all. A funny story that just might convince you that worms can be lovable, too.
The newest in the Elephant and Piggie Like Reading series and by the author of the Bruce books–a winning combination.
This is another cute book from the Elephant and Piggie Like Reading series. The tiger is adorable and the idea of a tiger being scared of worms is just too funny. This will be another book that will have young readers giggling. Some of the puns may need explanation, but I know this one will be popular with young readers.
This is the cutest story! I didn't think we'd find anything we'd like as much as Elephant and Piggie, but this one is just as fun!
Thanks to the publisher for an early copy, and introducing us to a new favorite!
Tiger is strong and big and brave. Tiger is not afraid of anything... except worms!
The much-loved duo, Elephant & Piggie, from the mind of Mo Willems, introduces readers to an adorable tiger, illustrated by Ryan T. Higgins, that has an irrational fear of worms. He is unknowingly benefiting the worms with his fears, which gives us a fun little plot twist that really makes the story!
This story starts out with a letter to the reader from Mo about how Elephant and Piggie love to read so much that they've decided to share some of their favorite books with us! It then shows a picture of Elephant and Piggie reading 'What About Worms!' and immediately begins with them talking about this very book before the book even starts, which offers a bit of layering to the overall story and introduces readers to something new using something they may already know and love!
Similar to the original Elephant & Piggie books, this story has thought bubbles with minimal text and onomatopoeia that is perfect for children learning to read. We have already fallen in love with Ryan T. Higgins' illustration-style from his Mother Bruce picture book series and recognized his work in the tiger right away! His characters are always super cute and expressive and this tiger is no exception! He's actually got plenty to say about worms!
This story had my five-year-old laughing out loud and asking for more!
Elephant and Piggie have done it again - recommended another hilarious early reader book! Tiger is brave. Tiger is big. Tiger is not afraid of anything. That is, except for worms. Worms are slimy, they wiggle, and you can't tell their tops from their bottoms! Tiger tries to enjoy his favorite things, such as flowers, apples, and books, until he realizes they are also favorites of worms. In a panic, he drops everything and runs away. At this point, the worms begin to appear to see the cause of all of the ruckus. Even though Tiger is afraid of worms, it also seems the worms are afraid of Tiger. That is until they see all of the lovely things he has dropped on the ground for them - the things he broke in his panic. Maybe tigers aren't so bad after all!
Written in a very humorous style, this book is another wonderful story to get young children reading.
Recommended for ages 5+.
Another success for the Elephant and Piggie Like Reading series! Higgins drawings just make you laugh and add so much of the emotion from the dialogue. Tiger is afraid of worms and all the things he does like give him anxiety at the possibility that there might be worms in them! (flowers, apples). The images of him running around screaming will make for a very fun read aloud. The best part is the reaction from the worms at the end. Highly recommended!
Higgins' brings his signature wit and humor to make 'Worms' another wonderful addition to the 'Elephant & Piggie Like Reading!' series. The illustrations are charming and the story is sweetly funny. There are plenty of great a messages too, about overcoming fear, perspective, and being tolerant of others.
I am very excited to be adding this early reader to our library collection soon. I know students and teachers alike will enjoy this wonderful book.
It's an odd framework to nest a unique story within a conversation between known characters. IT's a plot that stands on its own merits so we don't really need Elephant and Piggie to introduce it. I like the idea of seeing the same idea from two perspectives, both the tiger and the worms starting from a place of assumptions. This gives us a semi-subtle message about combating prejudice with knowledge. Cute.
It's hard not to be excited for a new Elephant & Piggie Like Reading book - especially one written and illustrated by Ryan T. Higgins, the man responsible for the ever darling We Don't Eat Our Classmates and Mother Bruce. So, get excited for this great new early reader.
Tiger is big, brave, and not scared of anything - although he doesn't like worms. Because they are slimy, creepy, and you can't tell their top from their bottom. His fear gets out of hand when he realizes that worms might be anywhere! Just as Tiger starts freaking out, a group of slimy, wiggly worms appears to share their own fears about tigers. But, after discovering a book about tigers, they learn that Tiger is probably very nice.
Charming illustrations, a gently humorous story, and the signature easy-to-read text makes for another sure to be popular favorite.
Tiger is big and brave and not afraid of anything except readers will infer that there IS something Tiger is afraid of. As Tiger lists what he loves like flowers and apples and books, each time he starts thinking about them, he panics that there will be worms. "Worms ruin everything," Tiger says. The Worms love the apples and dirt and books that Tiger left behind. They're so appreciative of his kind gifts, they rush off to give Tiger a big worm hug. Elephant and Piggie fans will laugh at this silly ending and Tiger's crazy antics.
Who doesn't love these readers! My students can't get enough of them. Cute story about judging others!
Huge fan of Mo Willems and Ryan T. Higgins. This is just a great combo for a super fun read aloud. Clever and fun, this is a fantastic addition to the Elephant and Piggie love reading series.
This was a nice addition to the Elephant & Piggie collection of easy readers. I am a fan of Ryan T. Higgins and his picture books, as well as his Bruce easy readers. The tiger in the book has a very similar grumpy face to Bruce. I like the overall message that the worms help us learn, which is if you learn about something you think you're afraid of you might not be afraid any more. I think kids are going to enjoy this book because it's funny and cute.
SUPER CUTE little tiger (who reminds me of Hobbes from Calvin and Hobbs) who does NOT like those icky worms. It was a fun twist to see that the worms felt very similarly to tigers! I think kids will really enjoy this story and it is also a good one to launch a discussion about other's viewpoints with kids and to talk about how others may feel differently than you do.
