Romances, fantasy novels and mysteries are among my favorite reads. I think these Scottish/Highland romances are particularly fun because they describe a world so different. In Tempted by the Highland Warrior, we have the youngest daughter of a French Duc who is affianced to a cruel but wealthy lord in Scotland.
When we meet Marguerite she has snuck out of her room in the middle of the night to help someone who has cried out in pain. It is one of the Scottish prisoners that her fiance forces to do slave labor for him who has been punished. Marguerite goes to him and tends to his wounds and becomes a savior/saint/muse to Callum. Callum has been kept in captivity since he was 12 and has lost the ability to speak. He's treated poorly, regarded as an idiot and mistrusted in general. But the two develop a bond and they both risk their lives as they fall in love.
It is hard to convey Callum's thoughts when he's unable to speak. The book doesn't have the sparkling, flirty banter that I love in romances. It does have an intense hero willing to risk everything for the good, innocent woman who follows her heart.
