I don't read romance, but have to admit I enjoyed this story as my first romance. I loved Samiah's sister, how Rochon incorporated social media, a viral video, and the effects it has on the person. I will have to say it was ultimately predictable. I do wish there was more about the other two ladies (the doctor & the fitness instructor). I didn't feel all that connected to any of the characters, but I did connect with being burned by a guy you like and then having to take a step back and do some soul searching.
I enjoyed Rochon's writing style and her brand of storytelling makes me want to read more from her.
Hi folks! Sorry for the intermittent posting. I’ve been in quite the reading funk as of late and it’s been difficult getting into reading. With that being said today’s post is looking at Farrah Rochon’s The Boyfriend Project which was released June 9, 2020. I originally received an eARC from NetGalley for this title, but have been a bit slow in reading and reviewing it.
This book was more than just your typical contemporary romance. More so than the title might lead you to believe. It centers on Samiah Brooks, an intelligent African American woman working in the tech industry. At the onset of the book she discovers that the man she has been seeing was also seeing two other women. The three women, Samiah, London, and Taylor, brilliantly humiliate the cheater for all of Twitter to see and then promptly become the best of friends.
The three friends decide they need to put themselves first and decide to focus on a project important to their individual goals instead of finding a man. Of course, just as they make the no-dating pact, Samiah meets Daniel Collins at work. Sparks fly, but what is Daniel hiding? Can they get over the hurdles and admit what is most important? Read the book for the ride on the relationship train.
While I initially had a difficult time getting into the book, I’m going to blame the pandemic for that. Once I could really devote myself to sitting down with the book it was an entertaining book to enjoy. While you get some fun bed romp scenes, there is genuine character development, and all of the characters seem like fun people I wish were real (minus the creep that started it all of course!).
If you enjoy friendship, comedy, and a bit of romance this book is likely up your alley. And since I was slow to the game this book is obviously already out so you can enjoy it! While you’re at it Rochon’s sequel is also out!
I was so excited to receive a early copy for review from netgalley! Farrah is an amazing rom com author and I would recommend her to anyone!
I enjoyed this overall, but it just didn't fully work for me. The audiobook was a lot of fun though, and I still have overall positive feelings about this one!
I really liked the start-up of this one, and I really liked the friendships that were central to this book. They all genuinely seemed to care for each other, and I always love when the main character has a good support system in a book. I also love that the story centered these friendships alongside the MC's goals, not just the romance itself. It made for an overall strong character set up!
I really loved the start of the relationship in this story, from the banter to how these two couldn't seem to get enough of each other. I lost a bit of interest when they actually got together, however, as it started to feel a bit repetitive for me, in both of the POVs. It was a combination of how happy they were with the other character, but the same worries coming in every time. I get that these worries were going to be there until they got resolved at the end, but it just didn't fully work for me, and I started losing interest. I did still like them overall together, though!
Overall, I did enjoy this, just won't be a favorite romance of mine. I do plan on trying more of the series though, especially after that cliffhanger ending!
This is a strong romance read with very driven main characters. If you are an extremely career driven person, I think you would relate to Samiah and Daniel more than I could if I'm being totally honest.
I always enjoy a romance that has some real backstory in it and whilst I enjoyed Danoel's pov, I found myself more interested in Samiah's friends than in her so I'm actually looking forward to reading the others in this series.
Read for a slow-ish burn between two very evenly pitted characters, both of whom find their desire for a relationship with the other seriously getting in the way of their respective career goals.
If you love Jasmine Guillory, Abby Jimenez and Talia Hibbert, you'll LOVE Farrah Rochon! This was my first Farrah Rochon read and after reading, I can safely say that she's now one of my one-click authors.
I was hooked from the very first chapter when our heroine, Samiah discovers that she's been dating the same guy as (at least) two other women. This is hands-down one of the best first chapters of a book I've ever read! If that first chapter doesn't hook you...
The discussions about workplace discrimination were fantastic (and necessary). The hero, Daniel, is the stuff of book boyfriend dreams. My complaints about this one were minor and needless to say, I'm super excited to read the next book in the series. One thing that I couldn't help but point out in our podcast review... who in the hell goes on a hike into the wilderness for their first date?! Haven't you seen an episode of "Dateline"?!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️/ 5

I was provided this book through Net Galley in exchange for an honest review. The Boyfriend Project by Farrah Rochon has a great premise that is perfect for the age of social media. Three women find out they've been dating the same guy when one of them live tweets their awful date and it goes viral on Twitter. It's the first book in the series and starts with the story of Samiah who's decided to put dating aside and focus on developing her own app but is soon distracted by new co-worker, Daniel who just happens to be hiding a pretty big secret. This book was a very slow burn for me. Their was attraction but I didn't feel the chemistry between Daniel and Samiah. Separately, they both had interesting and well developed back stories but together, they didn't work for me.
I enjoyed this book, it was funny, warmhearted, and inspiring. I loved the friendship parts of Daniel and Samiah. However, the title is a little misleading as I was expecting a full romance plot with more focus on the love and growth of that romantic relationship. Regardless, I did not hate it.
Samiah is heartbroken after she discovers that her current boyfriend is seeing two other women. After the breakup, Samiah stays in touch with the women and they form a strong friendship. Making a pack with these women, Samiah is determined to focus on work. In walks her new coworker Daniel. Daniel is new to the area and a bit mysterious, but as they work together Samiah finds that they have a lot in common. This was a fun read. I particularly liked the friendship that the three women foster throughout the novel.
This is a really good book that caught me from the very beginning! It's full of love, heartbreak, finding yourself, trusting in people again, and trusting yourself.
I tried so many times to read and enjoy this book but I gave up on try #4. I'm not quite sure what didn't work for me, maybe it was a mood thing? Anyway, sorry!
I received an advanced copy by Net galley in exchange for a review
This book literally gave me all the fells,
I love the relationship with the female characters I can see how this will evolve into a series
When three friends swear off men for six months, things certainly have a way of upsetting even the best-laid plans. For Sam, London and Taylor, the project they begin takes on unexpected proportions. Victims of catfishing, they come up with a plan that surprisingly goes viral.
Considering the busy lifetime these ladies have, a newly formed friendship hardly seems timely. However, a pact formed with victim's of previous boyfriend Craig certainly changes that. However, for Sam, rejecting the perfect guy - Daniel - proves to be a challenge she was not prepared for. What about the pact? Is Sam giving up that quickly? This enjoyable romantic comedy was a hoot with characters that were pretty much easy to like and the drama and conflicts worked out just right.
Many thanks to Forever and to NetGalley for this ARC for review. This is my honest opinion.
I love this flip on the trope of women scorned going after each other. It's not their fault a man is a dog! I got a little confused and bogged down in the corporate espionage/FBI part, but otherwise, I loved it.
The Boyfriend Project was a sweet read. It covers friendships and finding love in the mist of deception.
I found myself rooting for the two main characters to end up together. I will definitely read the second one.
I enjoyed this book. Samiah is a force to be reckoned with! Daniel was such an awesome book boyfriend as well. I enjoyed reading their story. I was able to go back and forth between reading the ebook and the audio and I would recommend either.
This book was so entertaining. I was drawn into the story from the beginning and was involved until the end. The characters were complex and interesting. I found the story to be well paced and engrossing throughout the whole book. I was invested in the couple throughout the book and felt all the emotions through both the highs and lows of the story. The side characters were such an integral part of this story as well. This is the love story i needed to read at this time. If you want an entertaining and well written book this is it for you
I received a free digital copy of this book from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Cute story! Easy read.
Thank you kindly to the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for this review copy.
This romance title seems like it would center around the friendship of Samiah, London and Taylor. The three of them meet when they are all catfished by the same man. That is when this book is the strongest, and when I enjoyed it the most. The primary love interest, Daniel, was rather shallow and lifeless. While this was enjoyable as a fluffy modern romance, it did not leave any lasting impression on me.
Feisty, modern, and funny. We purchased this title for our collection, and our students have loved it. A great read a like if you are fan of Alisha Rai, Alyssa Cole, or Tessa Bailey.
