I love Buzz Books because I learn something new each time I pick one up! These books offer such a great guide to forthcoming titles. There's a list at the front, with titles, their authors, publishers, and publication dates listed by genre. This is followed by several excerpts from upcoming books.
Of those excerpted, I'm most excited for Luster by Raven Leilani and The Vanishing Half by Brit Bennett. But Of Literature & Lattes by Katherine Reay also looks right up my alley. And I bet David Nicholls could make me cry all over again, with Sweet Sorrow (I'm still not over One Day!). I also bet Mike Birbiglia's The New One will be funny and worth a read.
One thing's for sure: We're lucky to have so many great books on the horizon!
These two are my cannot miss from this Buzz Book...
Seven Lies by Elizabeth Kay
One lie turned into two...you get the story. Psychological thriller and toxic friendship all in one. Cannot wait for this one!!
The Boys Club by Erica Katz
Big law firm. Big Money. Big Boys. Big problems for a woman trying to fit in.
I really enjoy reading every issue of Buzz Books because every time I find many interesting books to add to my TBR. In this edition of Buzz Books 2020 : Spring/Summer I discovered books that had heard and after reading an excerpt from it I added it immediately to my TBR. I also found books that I didn't know but I look forward to learn more about them and read them.
Thank you SO SO much for this great collection of fresh new books and excerpts. Books I may have well never heard about otherwise and now you've gone and grew my To Be Read pile even larger but hey that's not a bad thing! So many great stories coming our way!
I really love these compilations. I run a book box subscription and getting a taste for a book to see if it might fit our box is a huge help. Thank you.
I always look forward to the Buzz Books previews, and this one does not disappoint. It was great to hear about upcoming books and read excerpts.
I like the layout with the books divided into sections and then having the cover, introduction, and sample. I was a bit disappointed that there's not more romance or Young adult fiction featured though. Isn't spring and summer the perfect time for more fun, romance, and maybe even some beach reads?
A great way to survey upcoming books for the next season! I always look forward to Buzz Books, and this issue again did not disappoint. Too many books, too little time!
As usual I was delighted to have the opportunity to read through this preview of up coming books. I always love these. This one wasn't quite as exciting as some of the others I've read in the past, but there were still plenty of things that caught my attention.I rarely read through these in order. I usually start out by looking through the Index and reading the authors that i'm most excited about first. The first thing that caught my eye is that there is a new David Nicholls! Anyone who loved One Day will be super excited to get their hands on a copy of Sweet Sorrow. There is also a new Sue Monk Kidd (Author of The Secret Life of Bees) that sounds absolutely fascinating - Its narrated by the "Ana, wife of Jesus" and written as though it were a new book in the Bible. Those were actually the only authors that I was familiar with th is time around - usually there are a handful. That being said, it seems like this time there were a lot more previews of debut authors, which I appreciate, because I may not have known to pick some of these up otherwise. The Party Upstairs by Lee Conell looks fantastic. I love a story that has a unique writing style, or layout etc. This one all takes place in one day, which I think will make for a really interesting read.
Look. I'm going to be honest. I don't care WHAT The Ghost Facotry is about, I'm absolutely going to read it. THAT COVER IS AMAZING.
Non fiction also looked pretty exciting this time around. The one that stuck out to me the most was Hollywood Park by Mikel Jollett. First of all, he's a member of Airborne Toxic Event, so, he naturally had my attention, but also, this first peek at his memoir is HAUNTING. His childhood seems so bleak, and it is a miracle he turned into the successful human he is.
Interesting and informative look at exciting forthcoming titles for 2020. Thank you to Netgalley for the preview.
Thank you to the publisher for the opportunity to read and review this. I always am very excited to see what new books are going to come out before they come out so I can plan!
Thank you NetGalley, as well as BuzzBooks for allowing me to read this. I did not read all of the excerpts for all of the stories because I do not read books from all of the categories . I read Fraternity and that was one that really stood out for me. I will be for sure reading that book when it comes out. As times goes on, I will read more of the excerpts in there to see if there is more books that I will love. Thank you for the opportunity.
Wow, it's such a treat that NetGalley releases these sneak peaks into upcoming works! Here are some I'm most anticipating:
Enter The Aardvark -- Jessica Anthony
I've been hearing buzz about this one already, and the premise sounded interesting and absurd -- a politician receives an old taxidermy aardvark from a mystery sender. The excerpt is instantly compelling and transitions beautifully between the past and the present. It's delightful to read and the characters take form super quickly. Looking forward to reading this one in its published form.
The Death Of Vivek Oji -- Akwaeke Emezi
This one is from an author I've heard good things about but never read before. The first chapter is a single sentence: "They burned down the market on the day Vivek Oji died." The writing here is unique, the author quickly begins utilizing repetition as a tool to engage the reader and pull them into the story, the characters, the stakes. This story has the potential to be truly special. I requested a full galley of this one!
The Book of Longings -- Sue Monk Kidd
This stellar award-winning author is releasing a book about the wife of Jesus, set in the first century. This one seems in the vein of a potential feminist reclaiming of biblical history, like Anita Diamant's modern classic, The Red Tent. Definitely looks interesting if you're into historical fiction, female voices, and the new testament. Seems like the kind of thing likely to end up on every book club in 2020.
Chosen Ones -- Veronica Roth
I'm one of the few people on the planet who wasn't incredibly taken by the Divergent series, but this new book sounds really interesting. In the aftermath of saving the world, five prophecy-recipients deal with what life deals them next, including a death of one of their own. Growing up loving the Animorphs book series, which also deals with five regular teenagers tasked to save the world and dealing with PTSD and death, this story has serious potential. The excerpt starts with stand-up routines, magazine articles, and other cool ways to deliver exposition in a fresh way. Plus, the main character lives in my neighborhood! Will be checking this one out.
Exciting Times -- Naoise Dolan
This debut's premise reads like a millenialized Bridget Jones' Diary and the writing is sharp, too. The excerpt is set in 2016 and introduces a snarky, self-assured, charming protagonist who has relocated from Dublin to Hong Kong. Chapter 2 begins, "I'd been sad in Dublin, decided it was Dublin's fault, and thought Hong Kong would help." This excerpt was fun to read, with a love triangle promised just around the corner. I requested a full galley of this one!
The New One -- Mike Birbiglia
First things first -- after you finish this memoir, catch his stand up special with the same name on Netflix! I saw this when he was touring and it was great! Second -- it's so refreshing to see a man's memoir about pregnancy and parenting. This excerpt demonstrates his humor, humility, and humanity. I'm pumped to read this memoir and I hope Mike Birbiglia keeps writing his thoughts down forever.
There are many other promising offerings in this collection, among them: The Vanishing Half (Brittany Bennett), Broken People (Sam Lansky), All My Mother's Lovers (Ilana Masad), Migrations (Charlotte McConaghy), Fraternity (Benjamin Nugent), The Book of Eels (Patrik Svensson).
Thanks to NetGalley for this preview of these exciting early 2020 releases.
I am new in reviewing ARC's and I requested this one to get information on whats coming, I really loved this as it allows me to get prepared for whats comming, I see great titles and known authors.
Helpful for knowing some upcoming books. I appreciated the excerpts because it allowed me to preview books and decide if I wanted to keep reading the book. I loved this because one of my biggest turn off is language in books and the preview let me see that.
Thank you for giving me this sneak peek of upcoming books! I added an overwhelming number to my TBR—so many books I hadn't yet heard of.
It is always a joy to read shorts or exerpts so I was excited to review the latest Buzz Books installment. The short synopsis of each book was very helpful to set the scene for each book. My disappointment was in that most exerpts where the first chapter of every book but which isn't always the best chapter to read get a reader connected to the story. Some of the chapters were enthralling and I was left with the desire to buy/borrow and read that whole book! Some I could not read fast enough just to get through them, with those first few chapters testing my patience (how they were written, not their topic) - I am not a believer in stopping what I am reading. I alway persevere even if it is not my cup of tea. And that is the beauty of an excerpt: it tests what you like and surprises you when you like something you didn't think you would. Some of my highlights include 'The Burning', 'Hollywood Park: a memoir', 'The Socialite', and 'Sand Talk'.
I always love these catelogues to find new authors and new to me titles for review! Thanks again Buzz Books, great selections!
I love these books. I look forward to reading them every season. I would like to see more diversity. However, it's still a good resource for adding books to my To Read list.
A new "Buzz Books" is always a joy! It feels like a real treat to read excerpts from so many new books, always with the anticipation that one may be your new all time favourite
