Gripping, fast-paced read with lots of secrets, twists & turns! A great story of 2 sisters & the ties that bind them together. Absolutely flew through this one. On sale July 7. Highly recommend!!
The book is advertised as a thriller, but I would say it's more dramatic fiction?
Whole lot of drama; near zero thrills.
I went in expecting mind fuckery, intrigue and deceit at every corner...
While there was some, it was mostly a boring sibling rivalry story.
I am definitely in the minority on this, so give it a go and see for yourself.
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster Canada for my DRC.
Fantastic book. I was sure I knew who was who, had a pretty good feeling about what was what and what would be ... and I was wrong every time. Twist after twist, with wonderfully written characters that I rooted for no matter how many times the story changed direction - until the end, when it descends into a thick, dark truth that had me turning pages fast as I could. Absolutely terrific. My first book by Canadian author Roz Nay, and now I'm off to check out more!
Not everything is what it seems in this book! I found it intriguing enough to finish it and am glad I did!
Love love loved this book!! I could not put it down.
The story of two sisters, their past and things they never wanted to uncover coming to the surface kept me on my toes the entire time. Sometimes things happen in life that we cannot predict, and that we cannot escape - this book weaves a story of two sisters and their fears, troubles, challenges and more together. It is relatable in the challenging family dynamics and less than perfect relationships we have (mostly) all experienced at one point or another!
Interesting characters with very diverse viewpoints kept this story very interesting.
If you want a book that will keep you hooked all the way through, I highly recommend!
This was a mesmerizing read with lots of twists and turns using an unreliable narrator. You don't know which sister to root for throughout the story until very near the end. I thoroughly enjoyed this book and read it in about two days. The author layered her characters so well it was impossible to tell who was telling the truth. An enjoyable read for fans of Gone Girl without the excessive violence. It's a twisted, psychological thriller about what happens to families after a tragedy decimates them.
This was such a fast paced read, full of secrets from the past, sisterhood and coming back together. I really enjoyed the dual prespectives told from each sister's point of view and watching their stories come together to n piece together what excately happened in the past to set them on their Separate ways for 15 years. I was definitely surprised by the ending and the great shift because of the secrets and lies that had been kept in the past.
Alex a social worker has always had a plan. She has also made it her mission to save children from dangerous situations. In a relationship with her long time boyfriend even though she hasn't let him in on what happened in her past. That is until her sister Ruth, shows up 15 years after she up and left the family. Ruth is pregnant and needs her sister's help. Alex is not so keen to let her sister back into her life, because of the past she doesn't want her boyfriend to know. Ruth however is able to convince them to let them stay and starts to get the boyfriend on her side. Things start to get a little crazy and tense when Ruth's ex starts to contact them wanting his drugs and money that Ruth stole. Not to worry though Alex always has a plan, will it work out this time or will it become another big mess like the unfortunate day they were playing Hurry Home?
Alexandra Van Ness lives with her athletic and handsome boyfriend Chase in a small town situated in the Rocky Mountains. Alex works for the Child Protective services. Nothing is more important to her than ensuring the safety of children. Things are working out perfectly for Alex until trouble comes knocking at her front door in the form of her older sister Ruth.
Ruth has made some bad choices in the past involving men and drugs. On the run from an abusive relationship, a pregnant Ruth seeks help from her sister.
Reluctantly Alex agrees to let Ruth stay under the condition Ruth does not talk about their family history with anyone especially Chase.
The story is told from alternating points of view. As the the past comes to light the reader isn’t quite sure which sister is telling the truth.
Roz Nay did a good job of building suspense and keeping the action moving. Pertinent information came out at just the right time making the ending powerful and perfect.
I would recommend Hurry Home to readers who like Lisa Jewell.
A great read just in time for summer.
I loved this book. I loved it! Hurry Home has all the elements that I enjoy when reading a mystery/suspense novel: Family dysfunction, secrecy and twists.
Hurry Home is divided up into three parts with each chapter flipping between the two sisters, Alex and Ruth. I enjoyed seeing the situations from each sisters perspective. As many other reviews have stated... you really don’t know who to trust.
The writing was well done, the author clearly had a well thought out plot and direction for this story. Something else I appreciated was that each character in the story had their own distinct and unique personality. The author executed each character’s personality in such a way that I could easily picture them, their facial expressions, and their mannerisms. I was fully immersed in the story and the characters. Excellent writing.
I was sucked into this story from the very beginning. I didn’t find this book to be slow at the start; as many other mystery novels tend to be. I kept wanting to turn the page and find out more. One minute I was on Alex’s side, the next I was on Ruth’s. I made assumptions about the twists but then something would happen and my assumptions would start going in another direction. This was a fast read and while some of the dialogue is dark and heavy it was almost a fun read as well since it was fairly fast paced and kept you on your toes!
This is the first book I have read written by Roz Nay.
I liked it a lot. I liked her style of writing - it was easy to read and kept my attention throughout. I enjoy a story that leads you down one road, and you think you know where it's going; however, as the story progresses, you begin to realize that things aren't exactly as they seem - there were many little twists and turns. I liked how the title was chosen and the links to a childhood game.
The characters were very interesting and likeable (even the calculating and manipulative Alex - in a way I felt sorry for her-she truly believed she was doing the right thing) . I was able to relate to the characters and develop feelings for them. I was happy that there were not too many characters, so I didn't feel lost at any point. The setting was really nice too - I enjoyed that the girls grew up on a farm, and the small town feel of Moses River.
It is interesting how a traumatic childhood event can shape one's whole life. It raised many questions about family dynamics and relationships - I don't have a sister but often wish I did. If that event had not happened, how would Ruth & Alex's life have been different? Their parents seemed like really good people, so how come they turned out the way they had?
I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys a good psychological suspense with well developed characters and a satisfying ending!
Wow!! This book was dynamite and all things amazing! I loved Roz Nay's Little Secrets, so when I received a copy of this to read I was beyond happy. Like her first book, Hurry Home knocked it out of the park! I could not put this book down. I totally flew through it. It had me engaged in the story from the first few pages. This was a thriller featuring some major family drama and I was here for it! It was told from alternating point of views of two sisters, Alex and Ruth. Growing up, Ruth was always the trouble maker. Now adults, Alex is living a perfect life with her boyfriend in a fancy loft and has a job in child protection services. Then one day Ruth shows up on her doorstep out of the blue, asking for help. I will not give away any spoilers but expect a wild ride! I found myself going back and forth so many times, not sure which side of the story to believe. And the twist was awesome! So many times I thought I had the ending figured out and I was wrong! I thought both the story and the characters were very well thought out and well written and I really enjoyed this fast paced and suspenseful read. This one comes out in July so go ahead and put it on your list now because you are not going to want to miss this one. Thank you to Simon and Schuster Canada and Netgalley for sending this one my way. And thank you Roz Nay for an awesome book that is definately one of my favourite reads of this year!
More mystery and family drama than thriller but still a good read if you enjoy this type of book.
Alex is shocked and apprehensive when estranged older sister Ruth shows up on her doorstep after many years. To Alex, Ruth was the conniving troublemaker when they were kids but both sisters have deeply buried secrets. The story unfolds with building tension as secrets and twisted lies are revealed.
Thank you Netgalley and Simon & Schuster for this ARC.
Thank you NetGalley for the ARC of Hurry Home. This was my first Roz Nay novel, I would really say 3.5* but couldn’t round up to 4*. With that said, I will be checking out her other works.
This book piqued my interest from the beginning, I felt that it was kind of slow for the first three quarters of the book. The end was enjoyable but did not have me screaming. The “twists” were mostly predictable, but it was an interesting take on sibling bonds and worth a read.
In this book you need to go in knowing that nothing is as it seems. This was a nail biting edge of your seat psychological thriller which is my fav! I loved the dual narrative between the villain and the heroine. What a fantastic read!
Two sisters who have been estranged for 10 years reunite when one shows up on the others doorstep. One good sister, one bad sister. But, which one is which? One is a social worker with Children’s Protective Services, the other is a former drug user who has spent time in jail.
Lots of twists and turns. A few surprises. And lots of secrets....the best element of any story.
The story ramped up in the second half. While is also became a little more predictable, it was interesting to see how it evolved. Not everything is as it seems.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an ARC in exchange for a review.
What is truth? Each person’s perception of events is different and influenced by their experiences of life. The two sisters in this story have experienced many of the same events but their truths are different. The telling of this story is done by alternating the narrative between sisters. The twists and turns and revelations make you want to know who is telling the truth. Who should you believe? I had trouble putting this book down.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for the opportunity to read this book.
Hurry Home is a book full of secrets, lies, misconceptions and sisters !
The story is told from both sisters viewpoint and you soon begin to wonder why is telling the truth?
Not sure either of them are the nicest sister you would ever want for yourself.
Twists and turns keep those pages turning quickly.
Another stellar read by Roz Nay.
Thanks to Net Galley , Simon and Schuster Canada, Simon and Schuster Mystery and Thrillers for a great and enjoyable read.
WOW!!!!! If I could rate this a million stars I would. This book was exactly the kind of twisty story I needed, and I couldn’t stop reading until I knew how it ended.
The book focuses on the relationship between two sisters, Alex and Ruth, who have a tragic past and a complicated relationship. When Ruth, years after they parted ways, arrives at Alex’s doorstep, the sins of the past are resurrected and have devastating effects on the present.
From the first chapter of this book I was hooked, it was the perfect combination of drama and mystery, with the final portion of the book causing my pulse to quicken to the point that I couldn’t stop reading until I finished the book. I stayed up far past when I should (on a work night) to figure our how the book ended. It was just that good.
I highly recommend this book as a thrilling and engaging read. I especially appreciated the author’s knowledge of aspects of child protection process, and felt that the characters she created were realistically flawed and complicated. The only regret I have is that I have finished this book and now have to wait for Ms Nay’s next novel. Hopefully I won’t have to wait too long!
Now, enough with my review- go get the book!!!
Thank you to Simon & Schuster Canada and Netgalley for giving me the opportunity of an advanced read.
The book was easy to read and I liked the twists and turns and the ending of the book. It was not predictable. I guess everyone has their own truth and version of events, which this book explores. Thank you to the publisher for sharing.
I really enjoyed this book. Without giving anything away, it wasn’t what I expected in a good way.
The story of the two sisters and their childhood kept me involved and curious as to how the story would end.
It was a very interesting and I couldn’t put it down. I read most of it in one sitting.
