This is a standard romantic thriller from Mary Burton. Tennessee Bureau of Investigation Agent Melina Shepherd gets drawn into an investigation for a serial killer after an unauthorized undercover investigation lures him to her. Lots of twists and turns--and amazing coincidences--in this steamy story. I hope that we get to see more of Melina and FBI Special Agent Jerrod Ramsey in the future.
Never LookBack was a classic suspense/mystery and add a bit of romance in too.
Melinda is a kick a** investigating officer who takes risks, strong willed - determined to catch the bad guys. Come to find out she comes so close to the hands of a serial killer. That leads her to FBI Agent Ramsey. With the two of them and other forces you'll find out quickly it's a matter of the past/present colliding-- regarding Melinda.
I loved how this author connected two crimes together with such amazing ease. I was hooked and couldn't put this fabulous book down. I enjoyed the characters and especially loved Melinda's mom/dad, her ability to care for others and then Ramsey-- I loved him and his attention to detail and worrying about Melinda.
If you're into a thriller with two killers in one book, slow burn romance, suspense and enjoy a kick a** woman who will do anything it takes to protect the innocent, you'll devour Never Look Back.
Thanks to Netgalley and Montlake Romance for an ARC/ecopy of this book in exchange for an honest review.
4 stars from me.
I look forward to reading more books by this author in the future!
Never Look Back gives us not one, but two crazy storylines involving the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and the FBI. Working together, Jerrod Ramsey's and Melina Shepard track down a serial killer that Jerrod has been after for years and a newly discovered killer that leaves behind gruesome trophies.
It may sound like too much for one book, two different serial killers working in the same town, but Ms. Burton weaved these different stories together perfectly and they had me so intrigued I didn't want to put the book down. The characters were well developed and I easily fell into their lives and wanted to know more with each page. Overall, this was an amazing book to read and one I definitely recommend for all Romantic Suspense lovers.
Boy oh boy, you sure do get your money worth with, Never Look Back. Not one but two serial killers. I could not read it at night, for fear of nightmares.
Having read several books by this author I was expecting another solid mystery. I was not disappointed. Some authors can find the perfect balance between interesting characters, exciting plot line with a little bit of romance. Bravo for Ms. Burton! I heartily recommend this author. I received an e-book from NetGalley in return for an unbiased review. Thank you NetGalley!
I can not give This book a good enough review to give it justice; but I will try. What do you do when you have two serial cases going on at the same time? Both are important, but one good be the one that could explain your past.; while the other puts you in the cross hairs of a serial killer wanting revenge. You work both of course, The best part though, Jerrod Ramesy, FBI, hot, stoic and into Melina too. Along the way the cases intercept and Melina realizes that her past is looking right at her. Two worlds collide that never should have crossed in this action packed thriller. You won’t see them coming until it’s too late.
I had been waiting for this book for quite a while and it's been so long since I read a good thriller, so I jumped on the chance to request this on Netgalley and read it the same day it was approved!
I love Mary Burton's suspense books because they have the perfect mix of mystery, investigative work and a touch of romance that doesn't overwhelm the main storyline! I kinda went on a mystery binge last year and read all of her books! But the previous installment in the series - I See You was kind of disappointing, so I was hoping this one would be better!
The Criminal profiler series follows the members of an elite profiling team that work on identifying and apprehending the worst serial killers! If you've read her other books, you'll see a lot of characters crossing over too! And each is a standalone book!
Also, I've noticed that the author features mature pairings in her book, with a hero usually in his late thirties/early forties and a heroine who is in her early thirties and frankly that makes crime thrillers more believable because only then would such elite profilers gain the experience that they showcase in the novels!
Never Look Back follows the story of Jerrod Ramsey, who is the head of the FBI profiling unit that catches the most heinous serial killers and Melina Shepard who is an agent of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation. The book starts off with Melina being almost kidnapped by a serial killer, while she is posing as a prostitute to find out what has been happening to the prostitutes who have gone missing.
Jerrod is called in to assist on the case when the evidence gathered points out that it is the work of a serial killer. While they work together to solve this case, they also begin investigating a car crash where a little girl has been abandoned. And, in the car they find horrifying evidence that shows that there is another serial killer on the scene with a completely different MO!
And the abandoned girl brings back memories and questions that Melina would rather forget! Plus, with a killer who wants to capture his escaped quarry, their time to solve the cases is rapidly dwindling! Will Melina and Jerrod be able to catch both the killers before they strike again? And how is Melina connected to both of them?
You'll have to read the book to find out!
Never Look Back was definitely better than the previous book in the series, but I didn't love it as much as I loved the other books! Don't get me wrong, I loved all the suspense and the investigative work! But, after a few chapters of focusing on the first killer there was a sudden shift to the second case and the majority of the book focused on that
I loved seeing Melina's relationship with her adoptive parents! And she doesn't run headfirst into danger(except for the first time when she goes undercover). She's quite cautious and when Jerrod arrives on the scene, she works with him smoothly to solve the case! Jerrod was an enigma in the previous books and I loved seeing more about him and his past in this book! I think Melina was perfect for him, but the development of the relationship between them could have used a little more work! I just didn't feel much of the connection between them!
The plot wasn't entirely unpredictable and I could see where the author would be taking the story The last few chapters were a little rushed but the ending was quite satisfactory! I just didn't love it as much as I loved the author's other books! I'm hoping the next one will be more engrossing!
If you are new to Mary Burton then I suggest that you start with Hide and Seek or The Forgotten Files series, because they are the best of the bunch!

Melina Shepard is an agent with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation, she is paired with FBI agent Jerrod Ramsey to find a serial killer. The novel opens with Melina working undercover as a prostitute and almost becoming one of his victims. Along the way they discover another serial killer has also been busy over the years and his past intertwines with Melina's. This is a well crafted, fast plotted thriller with excellent dialogue and just enough procedural description with a clever twist at the end. This is the first time I have read a Mary Burton novel. I'm not sure why I've missed her before because this was an excellent read.
Another entertaining read from Mary Burton.
I cannot quite put my finger on what makes her writing style so engaging, but whatever it is, she combines her magic with a great plot and two very appealing protagonists.
Melina is a bold, gritty investigator who takes a big risk in an attempt to track down some missing women and ends up in the middle of an investigation being lead by a determined FBI agent. Together the two end of working together to track down two unrelated serial killers. Lots of twists and turns in a fast paced hunt.
My only regret is that the book ended far too soon!
I think my expectations were high for the book based on the author and that she’s a pretty darn author. There’s just some missing element missing from it though….
Melina – a strong, independent and risk taker, its that risk taking that nearly has her ending up in the hands of a serial killer. A killer who takes great delight in making women beg for mercy. As a member of the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation her detective skills come across as her floundering around in the dark, haphazardly proceeding further into the case. It’s more dumb luck then her mad detective skills that have her discovering who the killer is before it too late.
Lone wolf FBI agent Jerrod Ramsey – what more can I say about this guy? He’s near as dammit at burnout, one slight thing is going to push him over the edge. I think as I read this book as a standalone I missed the detailed back story as to why Jerrod is in the position he’s in. Reading it on its own he is well a tad boring. He doesn’t *wow* me with his detective skills either … he’s contentions to people with awesome tech skills does.
The story is a little top heavy with serial killers – not normally a problem for me. In Never Look Back its a little confusing with ever switching story plots. There’s a disconnect, where Melina and Jerrod should be the gel between the stories that didn’t really work well.
**Spoiler Alert** if I haven’t already given too much away! The sexual chemistry between Melina and Jerrod lacked passion, and with a blink of your eye she’s banging his brains out! then wondering if he likes her! Very high schoolesk. On reading it didn’t feeling like there was this solid connection between them and the *HUNT* had just amplified the situation.
Final niggle-y point with Melina – she’s a cop, her dad was a cop and yet her security on her apartment is that easy to break just by picking the lock!?!? Seriously? The guy doing the break-in wasn’t even super skilled!
**Thanks to the Author and Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book. I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.**
Great book!! As usual, Mary Burton does not disappoint! Intense storyline, fun characters, suspense, romance, etc. Really enjoyed this book and look forward to her future endeavors!!
Good book, the story is fast paced, and creepy. Once you realize there are 2 killers, you wonder how they will intercept. I would give it 5 stars, but it left me wanting for more backstory on the killers. Their backgrounds and their face to face meeting was too quick for me to get a real understanding of them. But it's an, exciting read with a little romance thrown in, definitely worth reading.
Another winner by Mary Burton!! Read the book in one afternoon. Loved the two different stories going on ... Loved the character development throughout the book. Great characters - great story.
Thank you #netgalley and #montlakeromance for the eARC.
NEVER LOOK BACK....Mary Burton
Melinda she is fearless, determined and takes risks She is the investigating officer, she was a predator and escaped, now knowing he was a serial killer. With an FBI Agent Ramsey, the past of Melinda comes known. There are two crimes that come together. A bit of romance and a murder to solve. Once again the author has given us a tense tight murder, that will keep you to the end. Given ARC for my voluntary review and my honest opinion by Net Galley and Montlake
Melina Shepard is an agent with the Tennesse Bureau on Investigation. While working undercover as a prostitute, she almost becomes the next victim of a serial killer. The killer has many victims across several states and now is in Nashville. With the help of FBI agent Jerrod Ramsey, Melina discovers there are actually two serial killers and one may be connected to her past. This book is a roller coaster ride, full of twists and turns and keeps you guessing till the end. Thanks to Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
The FBI and the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation team up to track a serial killer. While on the hunt from him they stumble across another killer who has also been leaving a trail of bodies. And to ramp up the suspense the TBI agent has unexpected connections to both killers.
I enjoyed the story and finally getting Jerrod Ramsey's story who was head of the FBI profiling team in previous books. Melina Shepard – the TBI agent – was a very interesting, complex character. The two worked well together trying to track down the serial killers.
I tend to really enjoy Mary Burton’s books, and this one did not disappoint. Melina thinks she’s on the trail of one killer, only to find that she may be on the trail of at least two...and that both killers may be closer to her present and past than she thinks. Jerrod is called in to assist with profiling, which starts the roller coaster going. Between the twists, mysteries, glimpses into Melina’s past, and said past invading the present, the story keeps you guessing. And once you’re certain that this will be an easy one to solve, another wrench is tossed at the plot.
And as is the norm for Mary Burton and other authors of her caliber (Karen Rose comes to mind), there IS a smidge of romance and attraction between characters, but it doesn’t take over the story. Instead, Jerrod and Melina’s progression from forced partners to possible friends to more is more of a palate cleanser between the gruesome horrors happening all around. This tactic has been a consistent winner in stories like this one, and I’m sure this author will continue to wow me in the future.
Thriller with two stories for the price of one. Really good characters and a fast moving storyline which completely held my interest.
Mary Burton books always include interesting main characters, secondary characters that you want to see again and wickedly twisting plots. This book is no exception. Melina is with the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation and dedicated to her job. Some might say too dedicated, including her boss after a impromptu stake-out gone awry. However Melina has stumbled upon something far more sinister than can be imagined. Is it possible to have two serial killers operating in one area at the same time. Special Agent Jerrod Ramsey wants to know, and he believes a sinister and horrifying killer may have found a new hunting ground. An unlikely and uneasy alliance is formed between the two agents. A suspense filled book with plenty of behind the scenes police procedural information Mary does so well.
Another great book by Mary Burton. I have read everything she has written and love her books. Of course it is a Little gory but it is a murder mystery after all. I really liked the characters and the ending was fitting. Highly recommended for those who love romantic suspense
