Railway magnate, Tom Severin, is one of the Ravenel’s wealthy and powerful friends. Known for his ruthless business dealings and his detachment from emotion, Tom is perplexed by his immediate reaction to seeing Lady Cassandra but he is determined to have her.
Lady Cassandra has always wanted to marry for love. As the season progresses a “gentleman” sets out to destroy Cassandra’s reputation because she wouldn’t put up with is over familiarity and his rough treatment. In steps Tom and the rest of the Ravenel family to protect her. As Tom and Cassandra become friends they realize that there is more to their relationship than anyone thought but can Tom marry for love? Or does he just want what he can’t have?
I have been a huge fan of this entire series and this book doesn’t disappoint. I found myself smiling as I read. It is sweet and romantic and both characters are well written. I enjoyed the family dynamics and getting to see all of the older characters again. This was a great final book in the series, although I wish is wasn’t ending. You can read this as a stand-alone, but why would you want to? I highly recommend!
This book is everything you want in a historical romance. Dashing male leads, daring heroines, a bit of drama and a whole lot of Capital-R-Romance. I really enjoyed the family dynamics between the Ravenal siblings (I need to read the other books in this series ASAP!) and the give and take between Cassandra and Tom. It was nice to see grand-gesture-grade love at first sight infused with some very real relationship elements. The interactions between the two define each as a substantial character even as we follow them to a classic happily ever after.
I am a huge fan of the historical romance genre, and knew the name Kleypass, but had never read one of her books before (I know! It boggles the mind!). Needless to say, this author is everything promised and more. I already have the other books in this series on hold at the library and look forward to adding this one to the collection.
This latest entry in The Ravenals series is wonderful and adds background and depth to two characters we have met in previous books. Cassandra simply blooms and Tom finds out he has a heart after all. Highly recommended!
This series continues to have to most gorgeous covers! Chasing Cassandra is another strong entry in the Ravenel series. Any historical romance reader will enjoy this book. My library has already purchased it.
First of all - I LOVE all Lisa Kleypas books. She is one of my favorite authors - for both her historical and contemporary romance. I can't pass them up when I see a new one. Hard to put down. You won't be disappointed.
This last installment in the Ravenals series features a hero with a different way of looking at the world and the woman who sees him for who he is. Positively delightful.
I am really enjoying this series by Kleypas. This was a delightful addition. Strong handsome men with an equally strong female main character. Love the values, the time period, everything!
I have been hooked on the Ravenels story since book one. My favorite book is Marrying Winterborne, I just love a working class hero historical romance! Gotta say I was skeptical going into this because Tom has been a complete ass for 4 books, and I didn't think Kleypas could convince me that there was a hero in there but god damn it she did. Loved watch Tom succumb to love baffled the entire time. Most of all I loved seeing some dimension added to Cassandra. In the first book the twins were so intriguing and I was disappointed by how little we learned about Cassandra in Pandora's book. I really enjoyed reading about Cassandra finding her feet, but I wish we could have seen her create her charity.
I love the Ravenels, and was so happy to read Cassandra's story. I loved that Ms Kleypas went into the relationship between Cassandra and Pandora, and I loved seeing the members of the Ravenel family. It was a nice tie up.
I was distracted by the weight talk -- Lady Berwick's scolding of Cassandra for her weight hit me in a sensitive place, and I do wish that I had known it was coming before it came.
Magical.
Sweet.
Romantic.
Just some of the words that describe this Historical Romance.
Well I've been processing and just relishing in the aftermath of finishing this wonderful book. I've been wrestling with how I wanted to write my review for this. I'm going change things up as I don't want to give too much away. So this will be a little different from my normal reviews.
Characters, both were wonderful!!!!!
Tom Severin was complex and evolved into this wonderful character. He's very intelligent, logical and somewhat eccentric. No warm and fuzzies for him. He's very wealthy and creative. People relationships and emotions, foriegn to Tom.
Cassandra was sweet, loving and strong. She had a tender heart and just wanted a family of her own to love (I can so relate to that). Side note, it was refreshing and nice to read about a heroine that wanted a normal life as a wife and mother. Such a refreshing and nice change. She also wanted love for herself but was finding that no man she had met really attracted or pulled at her emotions. She loved her family!!! She also had a desire to help those in need.
The story line is well done. We open with how Severin and Cassandra meet. It was so cute and Severin just melted my heart and also made me smile.
We have several "meetings". What I mean is as the story unfolds we have situations were the two are thrown together and what transpires is sweet, heartfelt and romantic.
Without giving too much away I want to say that several touched me.
Severin working on something that malfunctioned and Cassandra helping him. Tender.
The two and their dance can I just say DREAMY and LOVELY and CHEMISTRY!!!
And Severin takes a orphan boy under his wings and a scene when the two of them help the little guy is funny and sweet as well.
Severin being a night in shining armor for Cassandra when she needed him the most. Beautiful!!
Cassandra stands up for Severin against her family. You go girl.
And then the "negotiations" and "contract" the two made for their marriage. Loved that, heart warming and funny.
Okay maybe it was more than several that I shared. But really I loved the development of their relationship. The multi layers of Severin, his thought process and him getting in touch with his feelings was so well done and beautiful too. And Cassandra and her tender and loving heart. Her determination to no settle for nothing but love. And how she dealt with Severin and melted his heart was perfect.
I loved the family dynamics and seeing everyone again. Loved the protectress of Devin and West. But yet in the end trusted Cassandra as well as seeing the change in Tom.
This was a beautiful end to this series. I found it to be the most romantic and second in line was Marrying Winterborne.
I hope we see another series. The Marsden brood PLEASE!!!
Highly recommended.
Another delightful entry into the Ravenels series by Kleypas, and one of the strongest yet! Emotionally withdrawn, competitive businessman falls for a sweet, cheerful ray of sunshine and sets out to win her over? I'm powerless to resist. Cassandra was optimistic and charming without being stupid or flighty, and Tom was given a powerful backstory to explain his quirks. I sped through this and was only sad there was no more! I could read a saga just about their marriage, and all the contract negotiations they go through in their life together.
I was so happy to receive an ARC of this novel! Lisa Kleypas is one of my all time favorite authors. I will re and reread her books over again.
Tom and Cassandra seemed, at first, like a case of opposites attract, but they were perfect complements to each other.
I loved the growth in Toms character especially.
I enjoyed ‘their love story! I would definitely recommend this book to anyone who reads romance.
Wow. Oh Wow. This book blew me away. I may have only started this series last November but as soon as Severin was introduced I wanted him to have his own book and I was not disappointed! What can I say- I have a thing for the anti-hero type. ??.
The beginning of this book completely sucked me in and I literally read myself to sleep and woke up at 3 am with my kindle smashed into my face and my glasses askew- there may have been drool… Anyway, I could not put this book down. I had to know what was going to happen next. Severin was such a fun character to read. His utter confusion at the idea of feelings was insanely funny and also sad. His instant gut reaction to Cassandra is endearing and hilarious. I highlighted so many passages, the pages are mostly highlights… His love for Cassandra goes beyond her looks, which is something she is completely unaccustomed to. And she is just as intrigued and confused by him. Seriously, well done, Lisa Kleypas, weeelll doooonnneee! Standing ovations all around.
Cassandra’s way of loving people makes her so endearing. She is such a true and honest character. Someone who makes you want to be a better person. She is whip smart and beautiful and most of all, she is an honestly wonderful person that brings light into the lives of everyone around her. Her and Severin are exact opposites and yet they are perfect for each other. As Romantically Inclined likes to say, “the tall grumpy one trying and failing to ignore the small sunshiney one”. That basically sums up the entire plot of this book. Way to go Romantically Inclined! This also happens to be my favorite trope… ??.
There is so much I want to go into about this book. But I’m afraid of ruining it… I’ll give a quick overview of the stuff I loved. Consent and victim blaming are talked about, nervousness about the feature are brought up and talked through. Found family and learning to love are a running theme. And my most favorite thing of all time- BANTER. The banter between Cassandra and Severin is pure gold. My favorite part of the entire book might just be their discussion of marriage. It was insanely well written and also so hilarious that I read it twice. Really, this book is perfection.
Buuuut…
The only problem I had with this book- isn’t even a problem with the book. It’s a problem with the cover. Cassandra spends a lot of time worrying about her weight. She talks about how her dresses need to be let out and how her stays cut into her sides, how she needs to cut down on sweets and yet, the cover model can’t be bigger than a size 2 or 4?!?! If you’re going to have a character who constantly refers to herself and is referred to by others as being “voluptuous”, “ample”, “curvy”, “plump”, and “well-endowed”, you need to have a cover model that matches that description. Severin literally talks about loving her curves multiple times. Come on, design department at Avon. There are a lot of words to describe that beautiful cover model but none of those specific words can be attributed to her body. However, you could say it about her hair…
Anyway. This book is now my favorite of the series. I loved one certain little character that I’m sure you all will love too. I loved the banter, and the love, and the family, and the complete awesomeness that is this book. Pre-order it, write the date down, do whatever you need to do- just make sure you read this book!
-Happy Reading!
As usual, Kleypas writes a wonderful love story. I loved reading about Cassandra and Tom. Tom's fall into love was especially sweet. And his grand gestures!! "There are no limits to what I would do for you." Talk about making me swoon!😍
This is book 6 in the series about the Ravenel family . I am a long time fan of the authors historicals but this series for me has been a hit or miss and so I have only read a few in the series. This one was absolutely captivating and I loved both main characters. In fact I went back and read Pandora's and Phoebe's book after this one because I fell so hard for Tom and Cassandra.
Essentially Tom has always had a crush on Cassandra but he is not noble though he is wealthy and he has not dreamed of marriage so while he likes/crushes on Cass he does not think he is good enough for her. Cass likes him a lot too but she wants love and he says his heart is closed off. At times I was not sure that Tom did not have some form of Asperbergers as he is so closed off emotionally and with touch.
Cassandra is Pandora's twin and Tom is a close family friend. She ends up compromised but refuses to marry Tom because she wants to marry only for love. Tom likes her a lot so much that he feels she is too good for him and he wants her to find love, something he can't give her.
This story was awesome as we watch these two become best friends and fall in love while not realising it. It was a wonderful story with wonderful characters and I only hated that it ended.
Kleypas hits it out of the park with this book! We met Tom in the previous installments in this series. I was worried that he was going to be a self centered ass that Kleypas miraculously turns into a polished gentleman. Not the route that she went and I'm so glad. Tom has layers upon layers and is by far my favorite "hero." The contract negotiation scenes are some of the best in the book. There was a lot more humor in the book compared to the previous 5 which made it an extremely enjoyable read.
This is the 6th entry in Kleypas’s wildly-popular Ravenels series, and loyal fans are eager to find out how ruthless and cold-hearted business tycoon and railroad magnate Tom Severin (a character in several books) will catch the final single Ravenel sister, Cassandra. Logical and brilliant Tom only allows himself a manageable five feelings, and non-existent love certainly isn’t one of them. So, how can he possibly convince Cassandra to agree to a marriage of convenience when she’s holding out for a love match? Although there is sizzling chemistry between the two from the start, it isn’t until her reputation is threatened by vicious gossip that the possibility of a happily-ever-after emerges. There’s no question why Kleypas is a reigning queen of sexy historical romances. In this beloved series (which features the next generation of her earlier series The Wallflowers), she has welcomed readers into the lives of a few close families who illustrate the changing social landscape of 19th-century England as financially-struggling aristocrats were forced to broker marriages with the affluent and increasing-powerful industrial class. She breathes life into her characters with intelligent and witty dialogue, striking a balance between romance and intrigue, and always leaves her fans wanting more. Let’s hope there’s more to this series!
I received a complimentary ARC of this book from Avon Book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Opinions expressed are completely my own.
Chasing Cassandra by Lisa Kleypas is the sixth novel in her Ravenels series. The novel is a marriage of convenience story between the arrogant and detached railway magnate, Tom Severin and the sweet and endearing socialite, Lady Cassandra Ravenel. Lisa Kleypas is a master of the historical romance genre. Kleypas weaves together engaging stories with strong characters and interesting plots that keep readers completely enthralled. Chasing Cassandra is no exception. Readers will be captivated and invested in Tom and Cassandra’s trials, banter, and love story until the very last page.
I like the Ravenels (I've read all the previous books) and I especially liked this story of Tom Severin and Cassandra. They were both great main characters with interesting traits and personalities. I liked how they complemented one another. Plus, it was romantic and fun to see the other characters from previous books.
Thank you to the publisher for an advance ebook in exchange for an honest review.
Love the Ravenels! Love Lisa Kleypas!
Chasing Cassandra turns lust at first sight into love between two characters who complement each other. Then turns that love into a marriage of equals.
Tom Severin has appeared in other Ravenel books and with Chasing Cassandra gets his HEA along with an interesting backstory.
The marriage contract that Casandra and Tom create reminded me of Sheldon’s Roommate Agreement and Relationship Agreement from The Big Bang Theory. With Tom’s spectrum issues and eidetic memory, he’s like a super sexy Sheldon.
A lot of the Ravenels from past books turn up in Chasing Cassandra. Including West, who has this exchange with Cassandra.
“‘What would you call a middle aged lady who never married?’
‘A woman with standards?’ West suggested.”
Love West!
Tom has a great quote as he’s talking with Devon. Devon wants to get out of this current conversation with great haste in order to join his wife for a “nap”.
Tom Severin – “I’d like some good, hard napping on a regular basis.”
Lisa Kleypas’ books are always a delight to read.
