A story full of suspense and intriguing characters, with excellent fast pace and good content that allows the reader to try to solve the events while reading but it is unpredictable and with a good ending. Good suspense, original and with good characters. My first book by the author. Thanks netgalley for the opportunity, all opinions are strictly mine.

I give it 1/5 stars. I couldn't bring myself to read till the end of the story. A DNF after a long time for me.
Didn't really peak my interest...

The premise is really interesting but the way the story unfolded was not really to my satisfaction. I didn't feel invested in the characters and story and decided that I would rather skip reading it than torture myself to read it half-heartedly.

I actually don't have the energy to write anything more. This book drained me, lmao.

I have such mixed feelings on this book.

Charlotte lives in a gated community with her husband that travels a lot for work. Elle is a foster child that lives in terrible circumstances. One night Elle knocks on her door asking for help during a thunderstorm.

Elle want revenge for what she thinks Charlotte did to her father that ended with him being in prison. Does Elle have the facts right? This part is all well and good, compelling reading. It's when it gets to the end that it gets all garbled. When the truth comes out, the role of the husband gets all jumbled and didn't make a lot of sense to me.

I finished the book because I wanted to see how it ended but I wasn't satisfied with the ending.

I found this book hard to get into at first and even now, about 20% of the way through, it's not pulling me to go back to read. I'm not sure if it's the characters or the wordy descriptions but there's something about it I'm not enjoying. I'll be filing this one under DNF.

*Since I will not be finishing, I didn't want to give this book a star rating, but it seems the website is forcing me to in order to move on.

The story is told from the perspective of two women, Charlotte, a middle aged woman living in a large house, mostly, by herself and Elle (Elizabeth) a troubled teenager who has knocked on Charlotte’s door late one night during a bad storm. The story goes back and forth, so you know almost right away that the ‘random’ knocking on Charlotte’s door was not random at all. Elle is trying to befriend Charlotte to find out if something that had taken place in the past actually happened. The first part of the story quickly established the basic facts and it built from there. I found the middle part a tad slow moving, the end I did not see coming at all, so many twists packed into a the last few pages. Overall I would recommend. Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for the read.

Seems that the label “psychological thriller” is placed in everything that comes out. Finally, this book fits that category. This one kept me up late and I couldn’t turn the pages swift enough. Enough ups and towns and second guessing to keep the reader both engaged and entertained. I quick read but a well written and satisfying read.

📖 BOOK REVIEW⠀📚
BOOK: What We Forgot to Bury

This is a book of lies. No one is what they seem. And as such, I had a really hard time liking the characters in this book. Honestly, they were all a little unhinged. But that was a good thing in this case because you never really knew who to believe and who to believe in.

The story goes between Charlotte and Elle, both with other motives, and neither with enough backstory to really allow the reader to dig in and understand. And the ending was very apparent to me, mostly because the facts were pretty much right in front of you if you were paying attention.

BUT - I will say that it kept me reading right along. I had to get to the end and finish because I NEEDED TO KNOW. That’s why I am giving this book 3 stars. It was written in such a way that the reader is compelled to finish.

This book will keep you guessing. I wondered which of the characters I could trust right up until the last chapter. The end was full of unpredictable twists that just kept coming! I enjoyed the last third of the book much more than I did the first two. Being that the story was told from the perspectives of both Elle and Charlotte, I believe that there was a lot to tell. However, I felt like I was reading a lot and not learning much so it did get a bit drawn out for me in the middle. Overall, I enjoyed the book. The author did a great job tying it all up.

A young girl (Elle/Elizabeth) appears on Charlotte's doorstep one stormy night leading us into one fantastic psychological thriller. You honestly don't know who to trust and had me unexpecting with the grand finale. Writing was great and the back and forth between Elle and Charlotte was easy to follow.

Book Review
What We Forgot to Bury
Marin MontGomery

The author did a superb job of bringing the pieces together. Each character seemed believable in their role. It was a surprise who the killer turned out to be. However, there were more than one guilty character, and each was driven by a different motive. The backgrounds of each are so unique, it was interesting how they came together. With all the tragedy, there were some good things to come out of it all. There's only thing I'm trying to put together and that is the Title. I know it's not talking about a literal burial. I know it refers to things of the past that weren't forgotten by several of the characters, but it still doesn't seem to for for me. Overall, a good read.

This book was something else. Charlotte meets Elle when she shows up at her door in the middle of a rainstorm. Charlotte doesn’t know that their lives have crossed paths before and what follows is one of the best thrillers I’ve read in a while.

Thank you Thomas & Mercer and NetGalley for my copy of this book!

For the most part, I enjoyed this book; however I feel like it could have been much shorter and been better. I did end up enjoying the story, but it did not need to be so long. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for a free copy in exchange for review.

3.5/5

This is the type of psychological thriller that I love to run across. Elizabeth Loughlin is a 17-year-old whose father has been in prison for the last 10 years. While many of the details only unravel as the story is told, we assume that her father blames Charlotte Coburn for his being there. And we do know he is asking his daughter Elizabeth to help prove his innocence.

By now, Charlotte Coburn is in her 30s and is a college professor. Like most of us, Elizabeth is anxious to believe her father is innocent, so she creates an opportunity to meet Charlotte. But she calls herself Elle rather than her real name. In meeting Charlotte, she hopes to befriend her and learn something to help her dad get released from prison.

But as Elizabeth (Elle) tries to prove Charlotte has lied about her past, she only becomes more and more confused.

The story goes back and forth between Charlotte and Elizabeth (Elle). It will have you moving in this direction and that as you fly through the pages.

My Thoughts
As I read this book I kept needing to know just a little bit more. One more page. One more chapter.

And though I figured out a little bit of the ending, it was almost impossible not to. For goodness sake, as I read I was frantically guessing all possible endings! And by saying that I figured out one part, there were still many things that I hadn’t worked through.

If you’re anything like me, while scurrying through the pages, I was also worrying that the ending would possibly ruin the whole story. As you know, unfortunately, from time to time that happens. So I’m turning pages, worrying, excited, biting my nails, forgetting meals, and reading well into the wee hours, and . . .

the wild finale was fine! I was left scratching my head. But it was all good!

What Concerned Me
While there may have been a couple of things with one character that may not have exactly added up, I didn’t go back to make sure. I wasn’t going to fret about something fairly small.

What I Liked Most
This story won my interest right out of the gate. (Though I’m fairly sure by now this is obvious.) And if you’ve read my reviews, I’m not one for a book that drags, especially in the beginning.

The characters and settings felt very believable and helped promote a well thought out story. A story that took me from here to there, then U turned and zigzagged back.

Believe me, this is an author that I will remember.

My thanks to Thomas & Mercer, NetGalley, and Marin Montgomery for an ARC and the ability to post a review stating my opinion.

This book... That ending...

I'm still trying to process how I feel about this book. I wasn't quite sure what to expect going in, it just sounded interesting. The story follows Elle who's father is in jail and mother commited suicide. She has been living in foster care for years and her life has not been easy or kind.

Then we meet Charlotte. Charlotte's story come in bits and pieces as she opens up to the teanager who showed up on her door in a storm, and continues to show up in Charlotte's life. We know that somehow she is involved in Elle's father being in jail but we don't know why or what happend until the pieces start coming together.

This story was every bit as twisted as I wanted it to be. At first I felt like it was not quite as fast paced as I was hoping, but I think as we find out information and how messed up these women are, it's worth it. We always kind of know what's going on with Elle so it's Charlotte's story that adds all the excitement and questions to the story.

We come to find out that the story of Elle's fathers imprisonment isn't quite what she originally thought and what she finds out is not at all the story she planned to tell. For Elle and Charlotte both, people are not always what they seem and even those closest to you can't always be trusted.

Still, that ending....

I think it is safe to say that Marin did an amazing job writing this and I will definitely be checking out her other books.

Thank you to Netgalley and Thomas & Mercer for giving me this book in exchange for an honest review

This book was a good one! Lots of intrigue, secrets, and a huge mystery that needs to be unwrapped. Oh, and some PTSD and insanity too. It got a little farfetched and cluttered at times, so this one rates a 3.5 rounded up to 4. Enjoyable but not memorable.

Elle, an underprivileged teenager, living in a squalid foster home, finds herself pregnant and abandoned by the father of her baby. Elle meets Charlotte, a sophisticated, wealthy woman and they soon become friends. Something from both their pasts is tying them together. I hadn't heard of Marin Montgomery before but have to say I loved this book and will be reading more of her Thrillers. Thanks to NetGalley and the publishers for my digital copy.

Domestic Thriller Revolving Around Women

I enjoy domestic and psychological thrillers. It doesn’t happen often that I see one with women on both sides of the equation. I loved that! The book is told from the deep perspective of both main women, though I didn’t think that their voices were unique enough. I also didn’t particularly like that both viewpoints were written from the first person present (i.e., “I walk”). That always feels awkward to me and makes some description even more so.

The book pulls you in with a look at a pivotal scene in the revenge seekers life, when her father was arrested. Despite some of my issues with this book, I enjoyed the book, particularly the surprises and rising tension. The descriptions are well written, even if slightly annoying because of point of view. Dialogue seemed realistic. Everyone had secrets, and no one was what he or she seemed. The action built well, and I couldn’t put it down. If you enjoy domestic thrillers like you, you may very well enjoy this book.

Wow. What just hit me? What We Forgot to Bury by @marinmont18 was so full of twists that I had to stop and ask, “What is happening? Is anyone really who they seem?”

This book really takes the device of the unreliable narrator and runs all the way with it. I wish I could explore this device more here but that would probably spoil the twists. So frustrating because I really want to talk to someone about this! If anyone has read the book, feel free to discuss with me!

I have to admit that about halfway through the book, I managed to guess a few twists but was happy that Montgomery still had a couple more in the bag at the end. I think in the end, all I can say is, do not trust anyone! Not the characters, not the narrators, not even the birds chirping outside your window right now.
