Superb cookbook for those that have dietary restrictions. I particularly like immune boosting smoothies. The book offers recipes from breakfast foods to dinners, desserts, and everything in between. The resulting dishes taste as if there were no restrictions on diet. Love the book and I highly recommend it to everyone regardless of whether you have dietary problems or not.
What a great cookbook! The material is well written and presented in an easy to follow manner. I look forward to trying out several of these recipes.
When I think of Southern Cooking "healthy" is not a word that usually comes to mind. However, Mee McCormick has done a great job of creating southern classics in a way that is healthier.
I tried out the coconut bacon recipe. I don't think it compares to classic bacon, but it wasn't bad either. More importantly, the recipe turned out as intended. The amount of ingredients and cooking time were perfect.
This cookbook is well-organized and easy to follow. It also has plenty of recipes, so everyone will find something to love. Whether you are looking to make healthy changes or not, this is a great one to add to your collection.
I received this book for free from NetGalley in exchange for this honest review.
This is a different kind of book than I was expecting, it has given me a new appreciation for the struggle people with food allergies go through. Where I can go to any restaurant and order, they have to worry not only about there being options for them, but also about the contamination possibility. Mee McCormick offers people with food allergies a worry free meal, and also lots of helpful tips and recipes in this book. The book is divided into 3 parts, the first gives a brief history on the author and a background as to why she does what she does. Part 2 is lots of info about your gut and bacteria. And part 3 is all the recipes, and there are a lot! Something that makes this book different is that the author struggles personally with food allergies so she is extremely sensitive to those and offers multiple substitutions to help you be able to make any recipe in this book, no matter your allergy situation. Reading through the recipes was a bit daunting, it is definitely not a beginners cookbook, there are a lot of complex recipes that take time and preparation. Overall, a very cool book!
This is a good cookbook for someone looking to enjoy southern food in a more healthy manner. There are some great recipes and I am hoping to try several of them. If you are looking to eat healthier, this would be a great book to start with.
I just love this book!
It combines health and cooking in one book. Mee explains the reasons that we need to follow her example - it is for our health. I have had to be gluten free for a number of years. For a long time it just took the fun and taste out of eating. These recipes will add flavor back into my life and at the same time support my gut.
The book is easy to use and well written. The recipes are divided into categories. There are options to make the recipes meat free, dairy free, etc. The pictures in the book are amazing. I love seeing picture of what I am going to cook.
Book received via NetGalley
This book is not a traditional cookbook so unfortunately it did not contain what I was expecting. The first recipe does not appear until page 72. The recipes themselves are very basic and not all of them include a picture (which I believe makes a good cookbook).
All in all this one just wasn't for me.
2.5 stars. I could see this book useful for someone who is VERY new to clean eating or has new major dietary restrictions.
Really adorable and well written cookbook. Kind of reminded me of Rae Drummond! Some of the southern recipes were easy to make.
Loved this book, the personal story of the author, the recipes, and the photos. She definitely makes eating healthier much easier, and inspiring. A great read and great book of more than just recipes.
You must try the blueberry dressing! There are so many great recipes in this book and then you learn how good they are for you and feel like you hit a jackpot. These recipes are amazing and the flavor is there for sure. A must buy book for everyone.
My Pinewood Kitchen, A Southern Culinary Cure by Mee McCormick.
This was just a wonderful cookbook. To me it was easy to read and understand but more importantly the food was something that I would love. So happy with this book!
Wow! Such a beautiful cookbook full of fantastic looking recipes. Not to even mention that they are gluten-free and help to reduce inflammation. I received an ARC of this recently and read through not realizing that it was published in 2020. This was actually to my benefit because I was able to locate a copy on Amazon. The recipes look delicious and are made with easy to find ingredients that I can easily find at my local, rural grocery store. I look forward to working through them. Since I am now within road trip distance, I am disappointed to learn that The Pinewood Kitchen and Mercantile has since closed. Hoping there are more cookbooks from Mee in the future.
We have been gluten and dairy free because of allergies for many years. I love that I am starting to see more and more cookbooks and restaurants that have concerns and care for allergy or food restricted people. These recipes looked very interesting and I am planning on making the chicken and dumplings and biscuits. I also found her story about how the restaurant came to be and her health struggles. I hope some day we can make our way to experience a place my kids can eat safely
As someone who loves to cook and has had to make changes to my diet in the past year, this cookbook has been amazing! Finding gluten free recipes that I actually like has been hard but with My Pinewood Kitchen a Southern Culinary Cure has given me more options. I like how Mee has allowed some of the most southern staples that you'd find in a kitchen or home to be able to cook allergy free. My favorite recipe that I could cook every day is the Celebration Brussels Sprouts. This is such an easy recipe to cook and it's perfect to go with my dietary needs. If you are looking for a cookbook that has a bunch of allergy friendly recipes, this is the one for you. I plan on purchasing this book to add to my collection so I can continue to cook delicious foods.
Helpful to those with digestive issues, this story is true and the recipes look easy enough.
For me it wasn't so helpful.
What a fantastic cookbook! I have been looking into eating better for my gut and general health, and this book hits the nail on the head. It has just the right mix of background, science and knowledge! The recipes are bold, delicious and appetizing. You are not missing anything with this mix of salads, soups, mains and baking! Southern classics reworked to be healthful. I love the focus on farm fresh, seasonal selections as well. This book will be a staple in my kitchen and I will be reaching for it often.
I received this cookbook for the purpose of review but am giving my honest opinion. The author has clearly put her heart into this cookbook. As a family member of someone who has continual digestion issues and has been going through regular treatment for it, I can certainly relate to the kind of problems Mee talks about. I also grew up poor and can relate to her story in that sense too... I grew up on cheap food, not healthy food because healthy food was too expensive. So in recounting her personal story, I felt a connection to her experience. She has put in a lot of effort not to just tell her personal experiences but to talk about the science and how people with digestion issues can help in their healing. It's given me cause to think about how I could be not only helping my relative but how I need to take care of myself as well. Lastly, I like how she has incorporated the foods she's talked about in the book as healing into various good-looking recipes so that you can immediately start acting on her recommendations. This is an ideal cookbook not just for those with digestion issues but for anyone looking to eat in a healthful way to optimize their health. I'm glad that she published this cookbook, I believe it will be a great help to many.
I love this cookbook that put a twist on Southern comfort but make them healthy for you. Eating healthy and not having to give up my comfort food, that sounds good to me.
I love cookbooks. Like it's a problem. LOL. I'm a recovering Texan, so this cookbook, My Pinewood Kitchen, called out to me when I saw it.
Since I changed my diet years ago for health reasons, and have had to make adjustments along the way, I'm never sure a cookbook will have anything for me. I was glad to see Mee's story. She also shares a lot of information about the "why" of the recipes and ingredients--most of this was not new to me but will be helpful to those who are making changes or trying something new to see how it impacts their health.
The recipes look amazing. There are a lot of recipes I can't have because of my personal restrictions BUT there are so many that I want to make. I haven't had chicken and dumplings in years. This is definitely a book I would buy for myself or someone who is gluten-free. I can't wait to make a couple of the vegan desserts (since I can't have eggs.)
