A very fast read! While it wasn’t my favorite thriller I’ve ever read, it was pretty good. The naming of the characters got a little bit annoying - as I thought it was a little cheesy. But besides that, the story itself did a good job of keeping me hooked! I also liked the twist at the end!
This is the third book of Catherine's I have read - and they keep getting better and better!!
The concept of this book is incredible -- I would love to know how she thought of it -- the background of the main character having grown up in a cult is also brilliant!! I got mad every time I had to put it down!!
You Can't Catch Me has a completely unique premise - a young woman named Jessica Williams, who spent her childhood in a cult, is a victim of identity theft/grifting by a woman with the same exact name. Catherine McKenzie weaves together the two narratives of Jessica's lives expertly (both her cult past and her present hunt for the woman who stole her money), and I found the pacing near-perfect. I'm a sucker for thrillers, and this book was no exception - I absolutely loved the twist at the end. JAW DROPPING. I really did not see it coming. The only reason I took off one star is that I didn't love love the protagonist or her relationship with Liam, which I struggled to get a grasp on sometimes. Overall, I was impressed by the book and would definitely recommend it!
Wow! You know it’s going to be a good book when you are yelling to Jessica in the first chapter ‘Don’t do it!’ and then an uneasiness comes over you. Starts with a bang out of the gate and then come the twists, like the first part of a roller coaster. Ms. McKenzie throws small bones your way to make you feel comfortable and a little cocky as to what you have figured out. Then just as you know the end is in site and you are slightly disappointed cause you still have questions and it can’t possible end like this, you are brought crashing to a halt and everything is revealed.
Original storyline, great characters...some likable, others not so much. It’s a story within a story and I couldn’t figure out how or when it would come together. But it did....even though I wanted one part to work out. 😉. Can’t wait to read this author’s next book!
Thanks to Ms. McKenzie, Lake Union Publishing and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
A fantastic roller-coaster ride with a twist I did not see coming! Deep characters and interesting plot twists, this is by far my favourite book by Catherine McKenzie. As always the story hooked me in right from the start and the dialogue is well written and witty. The characters are well fleshed out, and some deeply flawed - necessary for a great story- and I love that the circle of characters is limited, so we really get to know each one of them in depth. As always, I cannot wait for this author's next book!
I enjoyed this book. I 'Thought" I had it figured out pretty early on, but I didn't quite have it. A very interesting premise - several women with the same name, and one who uses that to steal from the others. Along with that is the story of one of the women's past growing up inside a cult and how she is dealing with the aftermath. An enjoyable read!
Wow....
That ending!
I so never saw it coming....
Catherine McKenzie delivers yet another amazing book filled with characters you both love and hate and more twists and turns than a Six Flags roller coaster. Each Jessica was capable of love and hate, pity and respect. I've been a fan of hers since "Spin" and eagerly await all that she writes.
I was truly shocked by the ending of Catherine McKenzie’s thriller “You Can’t Catch Me”.
I was instantly lured in with the horrible things that happened to Jessica Williams from page 1.
There were quite a few unexpected turns in this novel all the way to the end.
Page turning and mysterious, this was definitely unputdownable.
You should definitely pick this one up and see for yourself what could possibly happen when you run across someone with the same name.
I received a copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for fair and honest review.
The book started off with a bang. Jessica Williams was fired (worked out a lucrative agreement including a week in Mexico) for plagiarizing an article. At the airport, she just happens to be sitting at a table next to another Jessica Williams. They talk and exchange contact info on their cell phones. When Jessica arrives home after her trip, she finds her bank account was depleted. Jessica had a hard time growing up as she was a member of a cult, I had a little problem with the two story lines meshing together at first. I did roll my eyes a couple of times. The book was mostly fast paced and I did not guess the ending, perfect vacation read. Thank you NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Ok, I have had the great fortune of reading some of the best books ever lately and this one is again my new favorite of Catherine McKenzie. She has taken this story and written it in a way that you will not be able to put it down. You will want to know what happens. You will have to know who did what to whom. This is a big, huge, page turner from the very beginning to the explosive ending that will leave you in both tears and shaking your head.
Jessica Williams has come into some money from her past job. Jessica Williams has been scammed and all of her money stolen. Now Jessica is on a quest to get to the bottom of where the person who has the same name and birthday as her is and where her money is. She wants it back and she is determined to get it back. Jessica has had a pretty horrible life since the very beginning of her childhood. Living in a cult, taken from her parents, and raised by a crazy man who seems to be grooming her for something she does not quite understand yet. But she will. She will do whatever it takes to get away. The one thing she wanted more than anything was for her cousin, Kiki, to come with her. To get away. But Kiki refuses. She’s afraid and does not think it’s a good idea for her to leave. This is after all the only life she has ever know.
Jessica falls for her savior, Liam. Liam is not a bad guy. He’s a person who saves people. He does not want Jessica that way. Or does he. Is he secretly falling in love with her but afraid of letting her know? He is after all a few years her senior. There are many people from TODD, the cult where Jessica was, that Liam have saved. Friends of Jessicas. People she grew up with. They all know what was going on in the LOT, LAND OF TODD. It was not the happiest of life and the best thing to happen to them all was Liam saving them. Jessica does not care for her parents as she blames them for going to the LOT anyway. How could they do that and keep her there. How could any of the parents. Kiki’s parents and Jessica’s parents should have done better. They should have done something. But could they have truly? Todd was a maniac after all. A true cult leader.
This book was so well written. It was told with such intensity that you will definitely feel the pain that Jessica feels. All the pains she has had to endure. The characters are so well written you will feel like you know each one personally. The places told in descriptions that make you feel like you are right there. Whether it’s in the woods with the cult followers or in NY with Liam and the others he has rescued. Or on a trip with JJ to find the Jessica who cheated them both out of all their money. It’s a beautifully written story that will touch your soul. And then you have that ending. The one that ties it all together and reveals things that you would never have guessed. The things that made this book so good. Through many tears I read the ending and felt so much turmoil for Jessica. All she had gone through.
This is such a good book....
Thank you to #NetGalley, #CatherineMcKenzie, #LakeUnion for this ARC. This review is my own. Written from my heart.
A huge 5 stars and the very highest recommendation ever.
I've loved Catherine's books so far and never know what I will get when starting one of her novels. So far she has not let me down, especially with her thriller themed novels.
You can't catch me was great in that department. While there is very little in the romance department in this story, there is a lot of guessing. I usually guess what is coming so when it comes to a story like this one I like the twists it provides since they kept me second guessing through out. It also makes you wonder how many of one name can really exist?
I have been a fan of this author for a long time, and I really liked this book. I liked the story, although I did have a hard time believing some of the things that the main character did and how she always just assumed things would work out. I thought it was very engaging and I didn’t want to stop until I knew how it ended.
Jessica Williams got a payout when she was let go from her media job after a plagiarism scandal. She’s heading off on a holiday to Mexico when she runs into another Jessica Williams at the airport. Amazingly they even share the exact same birthdate. By the time she gets back, she finds out that her bank account has been cleared out by that other woman.
Jessica, who was raised in a cult, is reluctant to let the matter go and thinking that this woman may have pulled the same scam before, posts a callout for others with the same name.
This is a real page turner which keeps readers on their toes as the story moves between Jessica’s mission to hunt down the scammer and her time in the cult. Highly recommend it.
Whew! This was a book full of twists. You will be drawn into the story and wonder where it will end up once you've turned the last page. There are almost two stories woven throughout ... the history of Jessica and her life while living in a cult and after she leaves. And the twisted psychological second story line that has you sucked in as the three Jessicas...yes, I said three...go on the hunt.
You will be sure you've figured out what's happening. But hold on to the edge of your seat because you'll find yourself gasping in shock. You just thought you knew where things were headed! I loved the twists and turns, the relationships, and tension between characters.
Thank you to NetGalley and Lake Union Publishing for my advanced review copy. All opinions and thoughts are my own.
This is the newest release by Mckenzie who is from Montreal. In addition to being a successful author ('The Good Liar', 'I'll Never Tell', etc.), she is a practising lawyer. The plot of this thriller involves Jessica Williams, who escaped a cult where she was raised 12 years ago. When she is conned out of a large severance payment due to a chance meeting in an airport bar with a woman with the same name and birthdate, she is determined to get her money back. She finds other victims of the woman and together they plot to catch the con-woman. This is a fun read with the appropriate twists and turns and a narrator with an interesting and complicated back story.
You Can't Catch Me....or can you? The latest psychological mystery by Catherine McKenzie is another twisty ride! Jessica Williams, who escaped cult life at 18 and reintegrated into society, is a journalist whose career was just ruined by an accusation of plagiarism. Escaping the heat she meets another Jessica Williams at the airport-who just happens to have the same birthday. After playing a question game, they part ways-and Jessica Two parts with all of Jess's money.
Realizing she's been taken by a grifter, Jess sets out an a collision course to recoup her money after finding out she's not the first victim taken by this clever scammer. Laying a trap, Jess colludes with other victims in a frantic, possibly deadly, game of cat and mouse. You can't catch me-or can you?
Having read all of Catherine McKenzie's previous novels I could not wait for this latest release and it did not disappoint! While the characters may not be that likeable they're developed in a way that lends credence to their unlikability. The backstory to Jess's escape from the cult and experience growing up in that lifestyle is startling and the suspense towards the end of the "game" is gripping. Another hit!
Thank you to the writer, publisher and NetGalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest feedback.
(4.5/5) Jessica Williams escapes from a cult, a few years later is fired from her job as a journalist and has her identity stolen....what else could possibly go wrong in her life? Well, you will all have to read this one to find out as it is quite the page-turner with plot twists that I didn't see coming. A riveting psychological suspense that will grab you from the start. Very well done!
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the review copy.
Would you Like to Play a Game?
Sitting at an airport bar, Jessica Williams is planning to get out of dodge. When she meets a lady with the same name and birthday as her’s she thinks it a bizarre coincidence.
A week later when Jessica One discovers that all of her bank accounts have been cleared out she knows exactly who to blame. Silly Jessica for trusting her “new friend” so easily!
“War Games” - this is not, albeit, Jessica One, might disagree!
Good thing Jessica learned a thing or two after having escaped a cult as a child.
It’s called Survival of the Fittest and a Whole Lotta Revenge.
Crazy, Captivating and Wholly Entertaining, “You Can’t Catch Me” by Catherine McKenzie kept me swiping the pages of my kindle as fast as humanly possible to get to the wildly wicked end.
Another buddy read with Kaceey, on which we somewhat disagreed!
Thanks to NetGalley, Lake Union Publishing and Catherine McKenzie for the arc.
Published on Goodreads on 6.16.20.
I enjoyed the drama and tension in this book. The plot is tight and the various characters are well drawn (even if a few of them have the same name). I liked the variation of timelines between what Jessica is doing about her revenge and then mixing it up with her previous life in the Land of Todd cult. The ending surprised me and made me rethink parts of the book - very clever. A good solid four stars.
With many thrillers feeling very basic and formulaic for me lately it’s getting harder and harder for me to find authors that I can truly count on to deliver solid books time and time again. CM is one of those rare authors for me, each of her books feels different from the last and they’ve all been highly entertaining and compulsive reads for me.
If a book has anything cult related in the plot I’m instantly interested and then the idea of meeting a total stranger who not only has the exact same name but also the exact same birthday really just piqued my interest even more. That was just the tip of the iceberg y’all, this one was WILD and kept me on my toes the whole time. It’s one big game of cat and mouse that never once faltered or let off the gas. If like me you’ve had trouble lately with finding a book to hold your attention then give this a try because it worked for me!
