Disclaimer: I have never read this author before, and I had no clue she was a Christian author. With that being said, the first few chapters were well written and a light on the religion. I should also state that I am a trauma nurse, so all of chapter 5 and 6 just made me cringe. The writing takes a massive dive in these chapters and becomes eye-roll inducing. I will admit that I am not a religious person, but I have read plenty of books that were my taste and had no issues- this one was not for me at all.
I love this gorgeous cover!! I’ve only read a few of this author’s book and I’ve enjoyed everyone.
It was a sad book but also a happy one too. I liked the Christian and sweet romance parts of it too. Thanks to Netgalley for opportunity to read this delightful book
"Sometimes God brings people into your life for a short season. Even if the impact lasts till your final breath."
Nature vs nurture, Kingsbury explores what constitutes a family. Baxter fans watched Maddie West grow up and develop from a theater ingenue into a college graduate. When she discovers that she was conceived due to embryonic adoption, Maddie's life spirals out of control. She always cherished being a Baxter but their familiar faces now seem foreign. Grasping for a life line, Dawson introduces Maddie to her past.
After losing his best friend, Dawson reaches out to London's sister to share the news. Unknowingly, he delivers a domino effect as Maddie didn't know she was adopted. By connecting Maddie with her biological parents, he builds their future.
Looking at Maddie, Dawson could see her resemblance to London. Yet Maddie's sweet nature and love for God shined through their mirrored features. London's last words echoed that Dawson would meet "someone like her" and Maddie reflected her sister's prediction.
Thank you to #NetGalley and the publisher for the eBook in exchange for an honest review. I read the book a second time and after getting over Maddie initial scorn for her family's decision, I found "Someone Like You" an emotional roller coaster. This time I welcomed the ride and without giving anything away, especially when things returned to solid ground.
To close, Kingsbury echoed the character's sentiments "wherever you go, know that you're not alone. You're forever in my heart. And the moments you need me, no distance can keep me. I will be wherever you are."
Rating: 4.5
I was quite surprised by what this book was about.
I thought Karen did a great job of talking about a subject that I had no idea was even a thing.
As always it is great to read about the Baxters, but this story was all about Maddie.
The book starts with her graduating and getting her dream job and then a secret that was kept for many years comes our unexpectedly and everything changes.
I so enjoyed learning about The Seen Movement as well, as a little added bonus.
Someone Like You is yet another Baxter novel. I think I would have liked the story better had it not been a Baxter novel. Book managed to make me cry within the first quarter of the book. A character dies and you don't really get fully invested in the character but you feel the pain of the character's loved ones who have to say goodbye.
All and all it was an enjoyable book but a couple of things bothered me. Book featured Maddie West, daughter of Brooke Baxter West and granddaughter of the Baxter patriach John Baxter. Maddie finds out some news that her parents have kept from her all her life and she is not able to forgive them. I thought she kept unforgiveness in her heart way too long. Sure her parents should have told her but why keep bitterness in your heart that long. Another thing that bothered me was that she got engaged to Connor Flannigan and was so in LOVE with him and quickly fell out of love with him and another boy when she made a visit to Oregon.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
I loved Karen Kingsbury's latest book Someone Like You. This was a sweet, entertaining, and captivating story that I enjoyed this week on my summer vacation at home. The story revolves around her “Baxter family” but is definitely a solid standalone read. Adoption and embryo adoption is a central topic (not really a spoiler this is revealed early in the book) which creates family tension and gave me something to think about.
The book hooked me with the story of London and Dawson, but unfortunately the hook wasn't in tight enough and the hooked fish got away fast. The emotion in the chapters involving them was real but ... I didn’t find it believable that Dawson and Maddie eventually were in a relationship. I am simply over the Baxters and would have enjoyed this book more if it had been a stand alone book that did not feature them. I would have much rather seen the London/Dawson relationship play out. Why do I keep reading the Baxter books then, you ask? I wish I could answer that. All I have is that I keep hoping they'll draw me back in like they used to.
I have read every book by Karen Kingsbury, but have to admit this was not one of my favorites. While the concept itself is not farfetched, I just find it hard to believe as we have read numerous books by the Baxters and I never noticed any sort of indication this was the history. I don't know, the book itself was well written like usual, but I just didn't really care for it.
Karen Kingsbury has again written a beautiful novel. Love, family, and adoption. Embryo adoption, and both sides of the adoption. She opens our hearts to loveable God. Never disappointed netbooks.
Karen Kingsbury writes Christian novels like nobody else.
This book will cover a topic that many people aren't very familiar with and will draw you into the story line and have you devouring every page to find out what is going to happen to the characters next.
I highly recommend that this one be added to your summer reading list!
The publisher made a copy of this book available via netgalley. This is my honest review.
Thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
As Christan fiction this book has all the elements of a love story and a really good issue however it is a very light read and super predictable.
Thank you Netgalley for providing me a copy of Someone Like You. This story was very loving, heart wrenching, emotional, you name it. Im not very big into religion so parts that talked about that was kinda hard but thats okay. The story was pretty predictable though so I caught onto things pretty quickly.
This is my first Karen Kingsbury book, and I was not disappointed. This book covers the topic of infertility, embryo adoption and the the true meaning of family. Maddie’s life is turned upside down when she is approached by a complete stranger with information about her birth family. He must be mistaken, Maddie is not adopted. As she tells her parents about the strange guy who approached her at work, she discovers that her parents have been keeping a very big secret. Feeling like her entire life has been a lie, she leaves her family, fiancé and new job and heads across the country to meet her birth parents.
Although some parts of the story were predictable, I enjoyed this beautiful story, Kingsbury does a great job exploring the idea of embryo adoption form the perspective of the donors, recipients, and the resulting children.
Thank you netgalley for this ARC.
Another great Karen Kingsbury book. I read it in a few hours. Shed a few tears. What more could you want?
Karen Kingsbury is known for her faith-based, family-focused novels, and "Someone Like You" is no exception. I appreciate a good, clean romance and Kingsbury delivers! Unfortunately, I felt that the drama in this story was overwrought, and the ending was predictable from the first few pages of the book. It was hard to keep my attention on this book since I could already tell how it was going to end. However, I think that readers who are loyal fans of Kingsbury's work will enjoy this book as well.
Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Glad to see what seems to be the beginning of a new series from this author. I had thought the main character would have been a little more rebellious after discovering what her parents had kept from her.
Karen Kingsbury did it again with another beautifully written book! The landscapes alone described in this book make it worth reading. A young woman finds birth parents through several twists and turns. Events that lead to it are heart-breaking. She must do lots of soul searching and leans on God throughout to lead her in the right direction along with the help of a stranger that turns into a best friend. The birth parents, the parents that raised her, the stranger, and Maddie all fill voids for each other and along the way figure out that she was her sister's "someone like me". A page turner from beginning to end that will make you laugh, cry, and do both and the same time....
This was not one of Karen Kingsbury's better books. I was somewhat disappointed while reading this one. I found this story somewhat strange, weird even, but yet predictable in this book. Maddie finds herself finding out she was adopted as a frozen embryo. She is somewhat angry with her adoptive parents about this revelation & feels somewhat like her whole life has been a lie. Just a really strange and almost unbelieveable story!
I was given an advance copy of this book by Atria Books & Net Galley and this is my honest and unbiased opinion.
An emotional story for fans of the Baxters. This book can be read as a stand-alone but reveals just enough background to make readers want to read previous books in the series. Honest conversations about closely guarded secrets are discussed in a helpful way. God's ever presence in our daily lives and decisions is emphasized. The story was a little predictable but is well worth a read. Recommended!
Honestly, this was super predictable and quite boring. Everything that happened was something you could see coming from many chapters back. Not impressed with this one at all.
