The Body in the Apartment by Judi Lynn is the fourth book in the cozy A Jazzi Zanders Mystery series. As with most cozy mystery series each book can be read by themselves or in any order as each contains it’s own mystery that is fully solved within. However, there will be some character development carrying over from book to book for those that follow the series from the beginning .
The first book of the series, The Body in the Attic, introduced readers to Jazzi Zanders who along with her cousin Jerod are in the flipping houses business in River Bluffs, Indiana. Now if anyone isn’t familiar with house flipping it’s buying up properties at a low cost then renovating them to sell for profit. I blame plenty of doctor/hospital trips for my new found love of HGTV and these type of shows since they seem to air in waiting rooms everywhere.
This time around Jazzi and her contractor Ansel have gotten married and with that comes Ansel’s family and his brother, Radley, who has been living with them. Now it’s time for Radley to move but just as that is about to happen Radley’s supervisor, Donovan, is found shot and his apartment completely torn apart as if someone was looking for something so Jazzi knows there’s another murderer on the loose.
The A Jazzi Zanders Mystery series is another cozy series that I have followed from the beginning with two factors bringing back time and again, the series is set in my home state and I do love the home renovation theme. This installment seemed to focus more on cooking that building though which was a little odd from my memory of the first three but it was nice to hear of locations I know first hand again. Overall I still enjoyed the characters and mystery and will certainly return to the series with this latest coming in at three and a half stars for me.
I received an advance copy from the publisher via NetGalley.
Sadly I'm going to have to wait until book 6 to read more of this series , because to Netgalley I've already read books 2-5, what drew me to this cute and fun series was the cove and then after I read my first book which was book 2 I was hooked, love the characters, love how it also show the love of family ether by blood or non blood , love how I can set and just read and get lost in the story and love how no matter what type of day I'm having by the end of the I have a smile on my face, Non stop from the very start .
I really loved this book in a new to my series. Tha characters and location really and to the story. I can't wait to read the next one. This book keeps you guessing until the end
Jazzi Zanders is once again in the business of solving murders. I enjoy the information regarding the flipping of houses as it's interesting to read about how everything progresses.
I enjoy the mystery but it doesn't seem realistic to me for the police to invite her to every interview and utilize her during the investigation.
The characters are interesting and I've enjoyed watching the relationships grow.
This book is the best yet in the series and I really enjoyed it. The mystery was very good and I liked the glimpses in to the lives of the characters that weren't mystery related. That made for a nicely well rounded story. Looking forward to .the next book.
I enjoyed this book a lot. It is the first book I have read in this series, but I didn't feel ;lost. I enjoyed all the characters in this book and the author does a great job of transporting you into the world she created. The mystery was very hard to solve and I will be reading other books in this series.
Jazzi's BIL Radley finally has found an apartment that he can afford and moving day has arrived but just as the final boxes are loaded into the trucks, Bain, Ansel's other brother (the disagreeable one) arrives to tell Radley that he can't move into the apartment that he needs to come back to the farm to help out. Radley continues with his moving plans, dragging Bain along with him. When they arrive at the apartment building, Bain and Radley keep arguing and Bain yells at Donovan, Radley's friend to stay out of something that's none of his business. Bain storms out and shortly after, Donovan is shot and of course the weapon was Bain's. As the chief suspect, Bain is forced to stay in town and Jazzi and Ansel are forced to have him stay with them. In s effort to clear Bain and get him out of their home and back to the farm ASAP, Jazzi works with Detective Gaff to try to find the person who killed Donovan. At the same time, there have been a rash of break-ins that seem to be connected.
This is rapidly becoming a favorite new series for me. The characters are very believable and likable (mostly) and it is great to see a law enforcement officer that is not constantly telling our amateur sleuths to stay out of it but embraces their abilities as utilizes their assistance. I love the closeness of Jazzi's family, the quirkiness of Jazzi's grandmother (just a poo here and there) and the descriptions of the hunks that are primary in Jazzi's life are great!
Looking forward to the next one!
I am continuing to enjoy the Jazzi Zanders Mystery series. In this outing, Jazzi and Ansel are happily married. We met Ansel's family when they came for the wedding and his brother, Radley decided to stay in River Bluffs, Indiana. He is moving out of Jazzi's and Ansel's house into his own apartment, in the same building as his supervisor, Donovan. While they are moving his stuff, the oldest brother, Bain, shows up to try and convince Radley to come home. Instead of that, Donovan ends up being shot with Bain's gun, taken from his truck. Donovan's apartment is also ransacked. Bain is told he is not to leave River's Bluff as he is the main suspect of the murder. Jazzi needs to find out who killed Donovan, so Bain can go back to the farm.
As I said before, I really like Jazzi. She is likable, smart, a great cook, dedicated to her friends and family and loves her job. She works with the police detective, as people tell her things they won't say to him, but she does not put herself in danger, normally. There are a lot of twists to this mystery as it involves a group of ex-convicts who are not very good guys (prison did not reform all of them). There are a couple of deaths/murders/assaults in this one, making it a bit more dangerous than many cozies I have read. I had figured out who the culprit was and the final reveal was eventful, but not unexpected. I enjoyed meeting the new characters in this story who I hope we will see more of as the series proceeds, as well as some of the regulars from the previous books. These stories can be read as standalone books as far as the mystery goes, but you will miss some characters development along the way. Overall, a fun, well-paced cozy with great characters.
A good cozy mystery full of adorable animals and a great mystery. I recommend for a great light read
This is book 4 in the Jazzi Zanders series and I think it's my favorite so far. It can be read as a stand alone but it has characters from past books playing big roles so you might want to read previous stories to fully get this one. Jazzi and husband, Ansel are flipping a big home along with her cousin Jerod. Ansel's brother, Radley stayed in town after the wedding, leaving the family farm. Oldest brother Bain has come to take Radley back home when he is accused of murder. Judi Lynn has made Bain a likable character and you want to know how the family saga turns out. I admire Jazzi for her hard work as a carpenter and her need to keep the extended family close for weekly meals. Good mystery and several good recipes. I received a copy of this ARC in exchange for a fair and honest review.
Another solid book in this cozy mystery series. Although I haven't always loved all of the characters in this series, including the main ones, I've found that there has been a lot of development throughout the series and in each book that has made them grow on me. This book had a great mystery and overall I really enjoyed reading it. I enjoy the aspect of the main characters being house flippers, which serves well to get them involved in a variety of mysteries. What bothers me, and has for each book, is the level of involvement that gets with the detective. It doesn't seem to fit that he would just bring her to interviews and such.
This is a series that has only improved with each book. I was not exactly thrilled with the first book as I felt it had too much romance and I am a cozy reader who doesn't like a lot of romance in her cozy mysteries. Now that Ansel and Jazzy are married the romance is where it should be.
Not much has changed between Jazzi and Ansel except they have some discussions on having a baby. I really hope that does not happen as I think it would change the entire tone of the series. Jazzi is such a neat character in that she does a lot of what some consider "man" work in her house flipping business. I like being able to read about a strong female in a profession that used to be heavily male-dominated.
We learn more about Ansel's family. Two of his brothers are in this book. They aren't as bad as previously thought. Their upbringing was just terrible and unfortunately, that is all they knew. Seeing Ansel escape and live his own life has encouraged them.
The mystery kept me guessing until the end. I like that. When I start being able to figure out the killer in a series then I usually lose interest.
This is a clean read but there is some violence with the murders.
I received a complimentary copy from the publisher, Kensington, through NetGalley. Any and all opinions expressed in the above review are entirely my own.
It's the fourth mystery for Jazzi and Ansel. Newly married but they have Ansel's brother, Radley, living with them. Soon Radley will be moving into his own apartment and, an added plus, his apartment is in the same complex where his boss, Donovan, lives. What should have been happy times are soon marred by the arrival of Ansel and Radley's brother, Bain. He is bound and determined to force Radley back to work on the family farm. No way is that going to happen and a fight ensues. Donovan gets involved, defending Radley's choice. It isn't long before there is gunfire and Donovan is killed. Bain becomes the prime suspect when the police find out that the murder weapon was his.
Jazzi has a good friendship and working relationship with Detective Gaff and she finds herself deeply involved with finding the real killer.
Besides the well crafted mystery with plenty of twists, turns and red herrings, each book has a very strong sense of family. Every week the family gathers for a meal, everyone helps when things are tough. It makes sense that Jazzi and Ansel let Bain stay with them when the police tell him not to leave town. It's what family does. The family story line is just as important to this series as the mystery. I'm already looking forward to reading the next book, The Body from the Past coming out 9/22/2020.
My thanks to the publisher Lyrical Underground and to NetGalley for giving me an advance copy in exchange for my honest review.
Book 4 has Jazzi and Ansel happily married and seeing Radley, Ansel's brother, moving to an apartment of his own near his co-worker, Donovan. Unfortunately, Bain, their oldest brother comes to River Bluffs at the same time to retrieve Radley and drag him back to the old farm. But Bain and Donovan quarrel and when Donovan is shot and Bain's gun is inexplicably missing, guess who looks like suspect numero uno? Of course, they know he didn't do it, but he can't leave now.
With the death of Donovan, Detective Gaff once again calls upon Jazzi to help with his interviews. In the meantime, Bain, bored, asks to be included in the current house-flipping project, which gradually turns him from PIA brother to welcome family member. Jerod's wife is soon to have their third baby, so an extra hand couldn't hurt.
It is a low-key, well-plotted, easy-paced mystery with family storyline at the forefront. It's not out to build tension. The mystery is cleverly tucked betwixt and between Jazzi's life. She fits in a few interviews of her own between work on the house and food and event prep. The perp isn't hard to figure and pretty obvious early on.
So what is it that's so compelling about the series? The characters, the location, and the whole unique staging of house-flippers. A series that I started with Book 1 and this entry could very well act as a standalone if you haven't read them all. The conclusion escalates into a gritty, heart-pounding climax. Then, as with any good cozy, soothes the heart rate, and dissolves all loose threads, even offering a few recipes.
I received this digital download from the publisher and NetGalley and greatly appreciated the opportunity to read and review. I'm invested in the characters and looking forward to Book 5. 4.5/5 stars
A Wonderful New Installment to an Old Favorite Series
Jazzi is back. And another murder has rocked her world—and her brother-in-law looks guilty. How’s that for starting with high stakes?
And it only get more exciting.
The plot is cleverly crafted and kept me on the edge of my seat. The cast—both old favorites and new characters—continue to keep me riveted on every page. I mean, what woman would love Ansel? But the rest of them shine in their own right. It’s nice to see them continue to develop and grow, just like friends in the real world. And the pets and the recipes are happy bonuses I look forward to in each book.
I love that this world is expanding and hope this series continues on for a long time to come. I suspect there are many more stories to tell. And I’ll happily devour all of them.
This is the 4th book in the cozy series " Jazzy Sanders" by author Judi Lynn. I have read the series and always enjoy returning to further adventures by the author. Thank you to the publisher and to Net Galley for the opportunity. My review opinion is my own.
Our protagonist Jazzy has married her hunky contractor Ansel and is living with his family namely his Brothers.
When one Brother Radley moves out with her help and gets into hot water at his new apartment house he finds himself accused of murder of his boss. Jazzy steps up to help and incorporates the help of her new husband and of his older Brother as they piece together the clues to free Radley from suspicion,
I love the charcters, the close family the author created and our protagonist Jazzy who is a smart investigator.
I enjoy this series as it has all the perfect elements of a great cozy series. I look forward to the next in series. The sleuth is well crafted. the clues were varied and interesting and the charcter development always enjoyable to read. Very well done to the author. .
The Body in the Apartment is the fourth installment in the Jazzie Zanders Mystery series and the first I have read. I found the cover inviting, the description enticing and therefore requested to read this from Netgalley.
Jazzie and her husband, Ansel Herstad, are helping his brother Radley move out of their home and into his own apartment. The day of the move, their older brother, Bain, shows up and tries to convince Radley to come back home to work on the family farm.
While the men are moving furniture into the apartment, Radley's boss, Donovan, is shot to death with Bain's missing gun. Donovan’s apartment is ransacked. Jazzie and Ansel have Bain stay with them since he can’t leave town.
I recommend this book. It can be read as a standalone.
The Body in the Apartment by Judi Lynn is the 4th book in the Jazzi Zanders mystery series, and another great addition. I found this book to be very interesting and enjoyable. Jazzi, her husband Ansel, and her cousin Jerod buy houses together and flip them. Radley, Ansel's brother has been staying with them, but he is finally moving into his own apartment. Bain, also Ansel's brother demands that Radley return home with him and work on the farm. When Radley moves into his apartment, his supervisor Donovan is murdered and dies in front of them all. Bain becomes a suspect, and Jazzi is determined to find out what really happened. This book has a bit of everything, humor, mystery, romance, and great characters. I look forward to the next book in the series, and I highly recommend this book, and the whole series.
I received a complimentary copy of this book. Opinions expressed in this review are completely my own.
This book is as entertaining and engrossing as the other instalment in this series.
It's well plotted, the cast of characters is likeable and interesting, the mystery solid and kept me guessing.
I appreciated the fast paced plot that kept me hooked.
I look forward to reading the next instalment in this series.
Recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Jazzie Zanders and her husband, Ansel, are finally getting the house back to themselves as his brother, Radley, is moving to an apartment. His other brother, Bain, arrives intent to taking him back to the farm, ending up under suspicion of murder when his gun is stolen and a friend of Radley's is shot. Jazzie, her husband and cousin renovate and flip houses, so the background to the stories is working on the house, cooking delicious recipes and family. I love how this series bases the story in the characters actually living an everyday life and underscoring the importance and love of family. Jackie is an intelligent heroine who does not take unnecessary risks to move the plot along. She used her wits to gain information and pass it along to the police. The mystery itself is well plotted and emgaging. While I have only read the last two books (out of four), this series has become one of my must read series. Lighthearted in tone and fun to read.
