I received a copy of this book from Netgalley. I would definitely consider Megan Miranda one of my favorite authors, I have recommended her books to adults and teens numerous times. Like her other books, I really enjoyed this one, and gave it 4 stars. There were a lot of twists in this book, as soon as you think you had things figured out, you realized that you didn't...I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking for their next good read.
It's clear from the very beginning of this thriller that the main character, Olivia, is a troubled woman haunted by a traumatic event that occurred when she was a child, as well as estranged from her mysterious mother. The novel starts with her receiving a box of her mother's belongings that soon trigger those terrifying buried childhood memories. The night after opening the box, she wakes up outside her house with bloodied feet and without any recollection of how she got there. The discovery of a dead body on her property line further throws her into a panic. So begins the story of the girl from Widow Hills who has tried hard to overcome her demons and escape her past which has become the stuff of urban legends, and now threatens to resurface, putting her in extreme danger.
The author writes with beautiful lyricism, creating a strange and dreamlike atmosphere that emphasizes the fragility of the narrator's mind and keeps the reader engaged in the twists and turns of this haunting novel.
Thanks to Net Galley and Simon and Schuster for sending me a copy of the novel in exchange for an honest review.
This was a slow burn that was a bit too slow and not quite enough burn for me to love it but had a solid dose of mystery that kept me invested. It had a cryptic and unsettling feel to it.
The story revolves around Olivia (formerly known as Arden - the 6 year old girl who miraculously survived three days in the storm sewers in Widow Hills). Now, at 26 years old, she lives a solitary lifestyle with few friends, hiding away from her former identity. Her life is predictable until one day she finds a dead body on her property line. As the story unfolds, her past catches up with her present, and she becomes a person of interest in the murder. What truly happened that fateful night she went missing and what is her involvement in the murder?
Although this story had potential to be a fantastic read (like All the Missing Girls, which I absolutely adored), I managed to guess the few twists towards the end, which meant the ending wasn’t as explosive as it otherwise could have been. I think folks looking for a decent thriller with a lot of build up (and are surprised by the ending) will enjoy this book much more than I did.
A gracious thank you to Simon and Schuster and Netgalley for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
Thank you to the publisher for my copy of this one - all opinions are my own.
This book! I’m a huge @meganlmiranda fan, and honestly, this is my new favourite from her, no question. I literally devoured this book at warp speed, it was so FRIGGING GOOD.
No spoilers of course, but this is the PERFECT summer read if you like intriguing character backstories, possibly unreliable narrators, stories that peel open one clue at a time, and fast paced plots that demand you keep going chapter after chapter. If you like books that leave a trail of breadcrumbs as it moves from past to present, and that reveals new sides to characters you thought you knew. If you like stories that grab you from the first chapter and spit you out after the last page.
This is the kind of book you get swept up in, because you JUST KNOW something is about to happen and then it does, over and over. I absolutely don’t want to spoil it, but I so want to assure you that thriller lovers will completely enjoy this ride.
Which in the end, left me entirely satisfied (other than the fun was over) and for all those reasons this lands at a hearty 14/10 star’s and really, REALLY should be one you pick up for that easy, summer reading mood when you want to waste away a day.
This wasn’t our favourite book by this author, and there are much better books in this genre that have been published recently. Although the author writes well, the book is very slow-moving and the premise is far-fetched.
Olivia Meyer has started over, left her past "celebrity" behind. She's no longer that little girl who was lost for 3 days. She's successful, has her own home and some great friends. Things start to change when she's informed of her mother's death.
Now Olivia is sleep walking again, something she hasn't done in 20 years, and a man from her past was killed on her neighbour's property. Everything Olivia has fought to leave behind is now catching up with her.
The Girl from Widow Hill's is my first Megan Miranda book and now I have to go hunt down her others. I really enjoyed the story and the characters in this book. I did find that there was a lot going on and things got a little muddled in the middle of the story but the end was worth it! A solid 3.5 stars rounded up to 4.
Thank you to #Netgalley and @SimonBooks for an advanced copy in exchange for an honest review.
Author Megan Miranda has become synonymous with summer for me. After the end of each school year, I find myself drawn to a good twisty and compulsive thriller. Miranda’s books fit this to a tee and her stories are the perfect way to kick off the summer.
“The Girl From Widow Hills” is a great page-turning read. Main character Arden Mayes is a likeable protagonist who readers are certain to become emotionally invested in thanks to a great backstory involving her media documented disappearance and rescue as a small child. With the 20th anniversary of the event approaching, Arden - now living as Olivia hundreds of miles away from her hometown, is growing increasingly haunted her own fractured memories.
Well-paced and full of reveals every thriller reader desires, the novel offers a great escape from the many difficulties facing our current world. This a story easily lost in and thus perfect for the beach, backyard, or cottage. My only criticism is that many of the supporting characters are left without much to do. Elderly neighbour Rick has the greatest presence in the novel but I was still left wishing the story offered more of him and his ending. Coworker and friend Bennett was another peripheral figure in Ardens life that I wish was explored beyond the platonic relationship pandering offered.
Overall, “The Girl From Widow Hills” is a superb choice for anyone’s Summer 2020 reading list.
I really enjoyed it. There were lots of little things going on that I was trying to piece together and figure out how they were connected. I loved the puzzle/mystery of it. It kept my interest. Olivia was a really interesting character. The story was well told but the ending felt rushed. A lot happened in the last bit and it just seemed over really quickly. There were some things that were happening, and they all felt connected somehow and then she found this one clue and all the rest just came really quickly after. I don't like endings that are long and drawn out but this was just a little too far the other way. Really good story though. This is my second book by Megan Miranda and I own a third. I have really liked her books so far. 4 stars!
This was a really solid mystery/thriller. It kept me guessing throughout. I found the characters compelling and the storyline was interesting. I would recommend this to a friend.
The Girl from Widow Hills just didn’t work for me. I thought the pacing was too slow and I wasn’t invested in the characters or the mystery. The ending was more interesting, but ultimately, the book was underwhelming for me.
6-year old Arden Maynor is "the girl from Widow Hills" that was swept into and trapped in a drainage system for 3 days after sleepwalking in a huge rainstorm. Arden, her mother, and Sean Coleman who rescued her, all fall under the intense media spotlight as the town searches and miraculously finds Arden alive and clinging to a storm grate.
Most of the story takes place in present day, Arden has long since moved away from Widow Hills and changed her name to Olivia, and making a new life for herself, never sharing the details of her past. As the 20th anniversary of her rescue approaches, Olivia learns that her estranged mother has died, and she suddenly starts sleepwalking again, and the next thing you know she awakes in the middle of the night in her yard with a dead body.
I appreciated the writing style, the narration, and the news article clips interspersed throughout the book. I thought the story was really unique, and I loved the characters, even the creepy ones! Megan Miranda's latest novel was a hit with me. Definitely a great summer read.
I was only left wanting to know more about Olivia's friend Bennett -- not that I was looking for a token romance, I just wanted to know more about their connection, or maybe just even an ending to his story.
Thank you to NetGalley for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I loved this thriller! I have loved Megan Miranda since her first novel and this one is just as good! The story is told in a dual timeline which I really enjoyed! The twist at the end was unexpected and I did not expect it. I loved this!
⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
What an amazing book. I loved it from beginning to end. It kept me eanting to know what would happen.. well written. Good story
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest review.
Arden Maynor who now goes by the name of Olivia had suffered a trauma when at the age of 6 she was swept away during a rainstorm and then trapped for three days while waiting to be found.
After that event everyone wanted to hear her story. Once she was finished college she realized that she needed to change her name and start over.
Parts were very slow moving and difficult to get into. Overall it was a good story.
This book was ok but I did have a hard time reading it and I don't really think I would ever read this again.
I really really enjoyed this thriller. I love Megan Miranda's books and this one was no exception. The story was interesting and the characters were well written. I would absolutely recommend this to anyone who loves thrillers.
Absolutely devoured this book !
Thank you so much netgalley and to the publisher for my digital copy !
What an amazing read ! This is a fast pace thriller that finds Arden Maynor who now goes by Olivia Wells - 26 years old and seemingly happy with her current life ! She changed her name to escape who she really is - the little 6 year old who sleptwalk out of her home at night only to be swept away by a flash flood !
Massive search party took place and it was a collective sigh of relief when she was found 3 days after her disappearance!
All is certainly not what it seems!
We, the reader along with Olivia have to decipher who we can trust and who is to be feared !
What a wonderfully written book that connected the past to the present seamlessly !
I didn’t trust anyone and the ending was amazing !
This is a 5 star rating for me and I don’t give those out frequently 😊
Oh this book is good. It’s twisty and turny. The characters feel authentic and genuine. The story building is fantastic and the words flow nicely. This is a easy read. It is fast paced and sucks you in from the get go.
Loved it.
Thank you Simon&Schuster Canada for sending a copy of The Girl From Widow Hills by Megan Miranda for review. This slow burn drama is available today.
Before I get into this one, who remembers Baby Jessica getting stuck in a well in the 80s? I remember my mom being obsessed with the coverage, maybe the first news coverage I remember?
The Girl From Widow Hills is based around a similar event but years later. She was Arden and she was lost in a storm drain for 3 days when she was 6. There was a massive search and plenty news coverage. Now she is Olivia and trying to live a normal life and a body is found on her property as the anniversary of her rescue approaches.
I did find this one very slow paced. The drama is kind of lumped at the beginning when the body is found and then in the last few chapters when it’s all resolved. The middle is mostly her worrying about things and little plot advancement. I did really like the ending, it was faster paced and had a good twist to the story, but a lot of my interest in this book was nostalgia for the Baby Jessica story and its aftermath.
I DNF this book at 15%. Truthfully I wanted to tap out at 5%. The writing still was not for me, I found it pretentious and unnecessary. The book was overly descriptive and I couldn’t figure out what it was about it the point of it? The main character was unlikeable. I found the entire story uninteresting, I wish I got what the hype was about! I hope others enjoy it more.
