Thanks to Net Galley and Simon & Schuster for the ARC of this book. I was looking forward to reading it because of the author's history. I enjoyed it but not as much as I wanted to enjoy it.
Worth a read... not my favorite.
3.5 stars -- This was hard to put down! Megan Miranda has another winner here!
Twenty years ago, six-year-old Arden sleep-walked out of her house and was swept away by a rain storm into the drainage system underneath the streets. She was found, clinging to a sewer grate, three days later. After years of media frenzy exploring every aspect of her life, Arden changes her name to Olivia and starts over in a small town. Everything is going well until she trips over a body in her backyard late one night. Her life begins to spiral as her past is dug up and an investigation into the murder ensues.
This book kept me turning the pages and I enjoyed the transcripts/articles/interviews regarding the case from Widow Hills at the beginning of each chapter. It is a well-written thriller and has a twist at the end that was unexpected!
3.5 rounded up for a fantastic ending
This is an extremely slow burn. There is a lot of detail and groundwork laid before things start to happen. Clever use of mixed media in the closing of each chapter.
Once things get going there are some great twists and red herrings. There are also some clues if you pay close attention (I don’t, but looking back realizing...😏). I continued to guess incorrectly the whole way. The ending came out of nowhere and bam, mic drop! Kudos!
As usual, this author knows how to tell a story! Thanks to NetGalley, the author and Simon & Schuster for a copy in exchange for a review.
I have been a fan of Meghan Miranda and how her books have me questioning my sanity as I read them. I find myself thinking, "Am I going crazy too?." This book was incredible and I was NOT prepared for the ending. I felt like someone slapped me across the face and laughed. As if I should have seen this coming.
The story revolves around a woman named Olivia Meyer and she carries a deep, dark secret. She was not born Olivia Meyer but Arden Maynor, the girl who survived. When Arden was 6-years old, she was lost in the underground drainage system for 3 days. Her mother stated she was a sleepwalker and when someone found her shoe by an entrance to the drainage system, the city rallied to find Arden.
20-years later, Arden is now Olivia, a hospital administrator living in a small town in North Carolina. She has worked hard to distance herself from that little girl until a man is found dead on her property.
What comes next is shocking and riveting as you follow Olivia on her quest to figure out what happened and if she, or someone she is close to, is responsible.
"The Girl from Widow Hills" had me questioning every thought I had about Olivia, the potential murderer, and who I thought was the killer. Be prepared to go on a wild ride, especially in the last quarter of the book. I literally could not sleep until I finished the book. I highly recommend this book, I am sure it will be a must-read in 2020. Thank you to NetGalley and Simon and Schuster for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book checked all my boxes for a fantastic read. I liked it so much more than "The Last House Guest"--- and I really liked that! I loved all the twists and turns and I felt like I couldn't turn the pages fast enough! It took mei a little bit to get into the book as I didn't instantly identify with Olivia, but I did feel instantly sorry for everything she had been through and just wanted her to have an enjoyable life. While there were many surprises I didn't see coming, the ending left me satisfied and hopeful. A perfect book to get lost in during the summer!
I have read all of Megan Miranda's books and have found each of them very interesting. This one does not disappoint! As with all of her books, there was great character development and a story line that kept me guessing until the end.
A timely and whiplashed-paced novel of trauma and healing, with Megan Miranda's signature gifts of rich characterization and a talent for sprinkling the landscape with psychological timebombs. This is a writer who never disappoints!
I have read all of her books and they continue to move and intrigue me. The main character is very much someone i would want to know and her struggle, being more than the story told about her and what is true and what is not true, raised interesting issues in the middle of a story about healing and a story that was also a satisfying mystery. Worth the read and maybe a re read
I have been a fan of Miranda's work since I read All The Missing Girls in 2017 and I confidently say that The Girl from Widow Hills will not disappoint long-time fans. In the novel, Miranda tackles the role of storytelling in the media. By examining what happens after the victim is saved, Miranda questions whether the media is always helpful, or whether sometimes, the media could even be considered a hindrance. During her childhood, Arden experienced a traumatic incident and the massive media coverage about the three-day event caused her to eventually move away from her hometown of Widow Hills, Kentucky as well as change her name to Olivia Meyer. Unfortunately, the past refuses to stay buried and soon, Olivia must decide if she wants to finally face her past.
Having experienced trauma in my own childhood, I found it very easy to relate to Olivia and her struggles. Trauma is not something that can be easily overcome and twenty years later, Olivia still suffers from what happened when she was six. Upon entering a room, Olivia can quickly determine the number of escape routes and the number of steps needed to leave via each available route. Enclosed spaces, like attics and elevators, with a singular escape route, bother her.
At the heart of the novel, The Girl from Widow Hills is ultimately about Olivia’s journey of healing. To overcome her traumatic past, Olivia must accept the horrifying event from her childhood and release the fears that have remained with her since those three days. Of course, as this is a Megan Miranda novel, you can expect lots of twists and turns before the conclusion is reached.
Great book! I don’t want to give anything way. This book was crazy! Some of the plots blew my mind while others I could predict. You won’t be disappointed with this book. At times I was on the edge of my seat. A very enjoyable book. I would recommend this to friends.
Megan Miranda can weave quite the crazy tale. I've enjoyed all of her previous novels and was happy to receive an ARC for The Girl from Widow Hills. Here we meet Olivia Meyer, a health care admin in her twenties with a major secret: she was rescued as a small child after being missing for three days. Olivia was Arden then and she is dreading the approaching twenty year anniversary of the event. It captivated the nation and as time passed made Olivia miserable with the attention from the media.
This was quite a roller coaster and I enjoyed it for the most part. There were some plot points that I just didn't enjoy, but they didn't take away from the overall story. With the release date still a couple of months away I don't want to give away any spoilers! Plan on picking up a copy of this book for a fun summer read!
Thank you to Netgalley for the ARC!
I received this as an advanced copy from NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Just wasn’t my cup of tea. Spoiler alerts. The premise that this woman’s mother was drugging her in present day and sneaking into her house and then offing people that came close to warning the main character of the truth of the past tragic events of her life largely orchestrated by her depraved mother; was just weak. Then in the end she keeps the secrets of the past to herself.?! Just poorly developed and wrapped up.
If you’re a mystery/suspense fan like I am, Megan Miranda should be required reading! I’ve read all of her addictive novels so when I had the opportunity to read The Girl from Widow Hills, I jumped in with both feet and didn’t even bother reading the description (because Megan is an absolute sure thing)!
I literally flew through this novel! The storyline was riveting and I found myself thinking that it’s novels like this that make me love reading thrillers! The Girl from Widow Hill is a 5 star read that will give you goose bumps and having you stay up way past your bedtime! I always think that there is no way Megan Miranda can top herself and she always proves me wrong— don’t miss this MUST READ!
This book was an interesting ride. We meet Arden, who now goes by Olivia, to avoid the publicity of her childhood. She was a child celebrity but not for a reason anyone would want to be. As a 6 year old she went missing for 3 days and was found in a storm grate clinging on for life. She is now living a quiet life but her past cant stay buried too long. The man who saved her all of those years ago turns up dead on the edge of her property and it takes the effort of a lot of different individuals to bring the true killer to justice. This book kept me guessing until the last page and was a true page turner towards the end. I really enjoyed the different media glimpses into the past between each chapter. For example a transcript of a 911 call or an article that was published.
Thank you netgalley and Simon & Schuster for allowing me to read this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
“The truest type of story is the kind you tell all alone, to yourself.”
Olivia has been struggling to leave her past behind. She doesn’t want to be the girl who was swept away while sleepwalking so long ago in Widow Hills. But then the sleepwalking begins again and before long Olivia is questioning everything—the past and the present.
This story had a lot of twists and the entire time I was wondering what had really happened all those years ago. I never saw the end coming and overall this was just a fast, enjoyable read.
Thank you Simon & Schuster, NetGalley and Megan Miranda for an advanced copy!

I could not put this put down. Could NOT.
Megan Miranda pulls you into this story so completely that you are absolutely consumed. This is the story of Arden, who at age six was missing during a storm and then dramatically rescued on live television. Her story so captivated the nation that the publicity nearly destroyed Arden and her mother; Arden moves away from Widow Hills, changes her name to Olivia, and begins a new life.
You can run, but you can't hide. Cue eerie vibes and strange events.
Megan Miranda gives us characters we are not sure we trust, desolate settings, side mysteries, and ultimately a satisfying ending. I was glad I was not reading this book alone on a dark night.
For good, old-fashioned mystery writing, it doesn't get any better than this.
A riveting novel that keeps readers in suspense until the very end. Megan Miranda adeptly builds tension with her plot development and attentive character development. The storyline and writing falls in place naturally, leaving readers available to fully emerge themselves in the novel. Wonderful read!
