The Girl from Widow Hills definitely has been one of the better thrillers I have read so far this year! It was suspenseful with a little bit of a creepy vibe that wasn’t too much for me. It was a slow burn, but it did have a decent pace throughout the entire book. I’m pretty impressed with my first Megan Miranda book!
Arden Maynor is known as The Girl from Widow Hills. As a child, she was sleepwalking one night and ended up being swept away by flash flooding into a storm drain and was heroically rescued 3 days later. This tragic experience propelled Arden and her mother to celebrity status and changed the course of their lives in the years to come. In present day, Arden has changed her name to Olivia Meyer, lives in a new town, and does not share her horrific past with anyone until one day she begins sleepwalking again and wakes up with a dead body at her feet. Olivia then becomes part of a murder investigation and begins her own journey to find out the truth about what really happened.
This was a standout thriller in my opinion because I could not figure out the mystery at all. Megan Miranda has a way of writing that lured me into thinking that I had guessed what was going on just to be thrown in a completely different direction. The ending was a shock and was not even close to any of the theories that I had while I was reading. It did feel a bit rushed at the end, but overall a solid thriller!
4/5 stars!
A psychological thriller about Olivia who becomes famous after she went missing and then found 20 years ago. She's trying to hide from her past but now it's coming back to make her question everything.
I have really enjoyed reading Megan Miranda's last few novels and this one did not disappoint. I think the author always does a great job of revealing some clues but slowly unfolding others. There are two mysteries happening side by side, involving Olivia's past and her present. I was hooked from the beginning and dived right in. I did have a hard time with Olivia's unreliable narrator voice, as it made her character very annoying.
The ending felt a little rushed to be and I think some other aspects could have been explored a bit more, but overall it's a solid psychological thriller and a great summer read. I really like it and will definitely be reading more books from Megan Miranda.
Arden Maynor suffered with sleepwalking as a child. During one of these times, she actually had gone missing for several days. The search parties and her eventual return were so noted that her mother even wrote a book. This became far too much for Arden so when she could she changed her name and moved away as far as possible. Staying off the grid got rid of the public's unwanted attention. However, now, known as Olivia, it is not twenty years later and the anniversary of that difficult time in her life approaches.
Not only does this still happen, but this time when she awakens there is a corpse in her yard. What is more is the man is someone Olivia knew when she was Arden. Why is he dead in her yard? How has someone connected her with the memory and name of her past?
This dramatic book turns into an incredible thriller. For one thing, Olivia's mother passed away months, before, which was unknown to Olivia. Also, there are other things going on that simply do not add up. The connection between her past and present is coming together and she has no way to stop what is going on before being able to wrap her mind around the fact that her very life might be in danger.
What a thrilling ride to be dragged through what was going on with Olivia. The tension never let up for one second and led to a shocking conclusion.
Many thanks to Simon & Schuster and to NetGalley, as well as Edelweiss, for this ARC to review in exchange for my honest opinion.
I have enjoyed many of Megan Miranda's books before and was thrilled to receive The Girl from Widow Hills. It is the story of a girl who went missing while sleepwalking as a young girl and was miraculously saved. She has moved far from her past and has changed her name. She now works at a hospital and is making a life for herself when a dead man is found outside her property. All of a sudden, her past is back. This is a fun, fast thriller that keeps you guessing and turning the pages. There are lots of characters and the author keeps you on the edge of your seat until the very end.
Megan Miranda has done it again! A thrilling, dark, twisty and suspense filled read. Arden aka Olivia sleep walks and goes missing and is found clinging to a storm drain days later. Arden changed her name when her mother wrote a book and she wanted to get out of the spotlight. When the 20th anniversary was close she started to sleep walk again and woke up in her yard to a surprise.
Thanks Netgalley and the publisher for the advance ecopy.
I really enjoyed this book! It was creepy, sad, and made me feel such a wide range of emotions. I loved that it was a unique plot, not one that I've read about repeatedly in thrillers. I think the book club that I co-host would really enjoy this book and I am seriously considering it as a selection for the group, soon!
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for the ARC of The Girl from Widow Hills in exchange for my honest review.
Olivia just wants to live a quiet life with her new town, job and name, escaping the craziness from her childhood of being the survivor of a terrible disaster. But when her sleep walking from childhood starts back up she feels uncertain about everything. And to make matters worse, she wakes up from sleep walking one night to a dead body- a person from the past she tried to escape.
I have always been a fan of this author's ability to craft an engaging, unique mystery be it adult or YA and The Girl From Widow Hill is another great example of what she is capable of. And because this is a mystery and I don't want to be responsible for oversharing my views and ruining the twists, this will be a short review. Just know that this story had lots of completely believable suspects with motives, surprising twists and scenarios as well as a resolution that I could never see coming. Just when I thought I had a handle of what was really going on, I discovered that I was wrong and I enjoy that in a mystery. I just wish the ending wasn't as abrupt as it was, I would have liked a little more wrap up, but that is basically just because I like my story tied up nice and neat in everything I read.
As always, I very much recommend anything from this author and this book in particular is perfect for fans of twists and being kept on their toes.
A great suspense read! The author had me guessing until the very end. Though the build was a little slow, I loved every plot twist and turn.
Simon & Schuster, as well as NetGalley, provided me with an electronic copy of The Girl from Widow Hills. I voluntarily chose to review this book and my opinion is freely given.
Arden Maynor was a little girl when a sleepwalking incident resulted in her being lost for three days. As the rescue yielded years of unwanted attention, Arden took an opportunity in adulthood to become Olivia. What happens when the past rears its ugly head after many years? Can Olivia outrun the secrets or will it consume her future as well as the past?
I cannot really say that I liked The Girl from Widow Hills as much as I was anticipating. Some of the ending was telegraphed early, while one key point of the plot was completely unrealistic. Without spoilers, I can only say that the ending felt like one of those Scooby Doo conclusions that came out of left field. The focus of the book should have been only on Olivia, but so many of the characters had their own side plots that needed attention. I have liked other Megan Miranda books in the past, but The Girl from Widow Hills was a disappointment.
I enjoyed The Perfect Stranger and The Last House Guest and was very excited for Megan Miranda's suspenseful new novel The Girl from Widow Hills. This twisty page-turner will keep readers guessing until the end. This is Megan Miranda's best book yet! The Girl from Widow Hills is a must-read for fans of psychological suspense.
3.75 stars. The story started off slow and took a while to get me hooked. The hospital setting seemed rather unbelievable how she could just walk all over and get into medicines. I liked how all the characters connected to the story at the end. Definitely a book club selection to see if others have the same response to reading this.
Stayed up way too late just to finish this book. I thought I had it figured out at least 3 times, but no where near the truth. A quick read, lots of twists and turns. Perfect for beach (unless you’re watching the kids)...or a quiet weekend at home (order take-out and silence the phone). Once I committed to the book, I flew thru it. This was a new author for me and I enjoyed the writing, characters and the dual timeline, ever so slight with just enough to keep you thinking. I look forward to reading more of this author’s works.
Thanks to Ms. Miranda, Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for this ARC. Opinion is mine alone.
I honestly thought I had this all figured out then, BAM THAT ENDING!!
An all consuming storyline, a strong protagonist you’ll be rooting for and lots of twists along the way. Definitely a must read thriller for 2020!
Favorite quote:
“My mother used to call us both survivors. For a long time, I believed her.”
I loved Megan Miranda's book The Last House Guest which was recommended to me (and the world) by Reese Witherspoon :) I was fortunate to listen to the author talk about The Girl from Widow Hills on a web panel and was intrigued by the story. I loved the little newspaper/TV reporter clips sprinkled throughout the book. This book was just the right amount of creepy to keep me wondering who to trust. I cannot wait for the next book by this author!!! I will definitely recommend this title to my library patrons who enjoy thrillers.
Thank you to Simon & Schuster and NetGalley for a gifted copy of this book in exchange for an honest review. Unfortunately, this was a book that just didn't hold my interest and I was unable to finish it. I know many readers enjoy books by Megan Miranda but after a few tries, I think they may just not be for me.
Fantastic thriller! I had no idea where this book was going for what felt like the entire time I was reading, but it kept me coming back even when I had only a minute to read more. My favorite type of thrillers are those where at one point you think you have it all figured out, and then something comes in and makes you question everything. This book really delivered!
Thanks to NetGalley and Simon & Schuster for an advanced copy of this book.
Olivia was just six years old when she was lost for three days after sleepwalking. Now an adult, she thinks her sleepwalking days are behind her when she suddenly wakes up outside her house one night. Then, the next night, she awakens again in her yard - and next to a murdered body. She has no idea what happened.
The first 1/3 to 1/2 of the book was slow moving for me, but once I got about 1/2 way through I was eager to find out what happened next.
Thank you to NetGalley and the publisher for an arc in exchange for an honest review.
Megan Miranda is an auto-buy for me! I was thrilled to have an early opportunity to read this book. Here’s the thing—I read a lot of thrillers. A lot. Because of that I’m used to patterns and usually have a good idea who the “bad guy” is. This one totally took me by surprise, awesome sleight of hand by the author. Recommend to fans of Lisa Unger, B. A. Paris, etc.
In this book, you learn about the girl from widow hills and some secrets that she's been keeping. There is also a murder that happens, so I was trying to figure out who the murderer was the entire time. I did not guess correctly, and loved all the twists and turns. Parts of the book are also told from past interview transcripts and 9-1-1 calls, which I found very entertaining.
Olivia (Arden Maynor) suffered a traumatic event when she was only six years of age – believed to have been sleepwalking and then swept away during a rainstorm for three days before she was found and rescued. In the years since, she's changed her name to removed herself from the surrounding drama of the incident and create a new life. When a man’s body is found on the border of her property she fears she will be found all these years later. A great read with twists and suspicions around almost every character. Recommended for any lover of a good thriller.
