First line: I was the girl who survived.
Summary: When Arden Maynor was a child she was swept away by a storm while sleepwalking. She spent three days in a drain waiting to be rescued. Now that it is 20 years later she is hoping to escape the “fame” of this event. She has changed her name and moved away from Widow Hills. But when she stumbles upon a body on her property she knows that her past has found her again.
My Thoughts: Megan Miranda is a great writer. I have enjoyed all of her thrillers. She always finds a way to make the story even more shocking then you think it will be. There is a great twist at the end of the story that definitely shocked me! There were so many things going on in the story that it kept my mind jumping around with new theories. I enjoyed the interlacing of the news stories, interviews and 911 transcriptions.
FYI: I always recommend her book, All the Missing Girls, because of how inventive the format is.
Wonderfully written with a very good, action and suspense building plot that brought you a nice surprise at the end to wrap the story up!
The Girl from Widow Hills is the newest book by Megan Miranda. When Arden was a child she was swept away by a flash flood and missing for days. This experience shaped the rest of her life, even to the point of being the cause for her mother and her to move out of state to start their lives over. Fast forward about 20 years and Arden has changed her name and is living on her own trying to forge a life. One night she makes a horrible discovery that sets off a chain reaction. A fast-reading book that keeps you guessing right up to the end. Read and enjoy!
As a child, Arden Maynor was rescued after being caught up in a rainstorm. She was missing for days, and it was a miracle when she was found alive. Now, Arden is an adult, living far away from her home town and going by a different name. She wanted to get away from her past, but it catches up with her when a man she knew from her childhood is found dead outside her home.
Arden changed her name to Olivia and lives where no one knows about her past. As a child, she was the focus of a lot of media attention after her miracle rescue. She lived through a traumatic event in her childhood, and she wants to leave it in the past. Olivia is an intriguing character. She's independent and determined. She's also a little bit unreliable, since she occasionally sleepwalks and doesn't remember things from her sleepwalking episodes. When a man from her past ends up dead outside her home, she is forced to face her past and find the truth about what really happened years earlier.
A suspenseful mystery that slowly unravels. Well-paced story with interesting characters. A good read for fans of mysteries and thrillers. Atmospheric and captivating.
I received a digital copy of this book from the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Suspenseful, thrilling, mystery..
Likeable protagonist.
Keeps you guessing till the end who is the murderer or whether or not Olivia remembers anything.
This is the first book I have read by Megan Miranda. I really liked it. I was instantly captivated by the story line and stayed interested through the whole book. I seriously couldn’t put it down. I didn’t see the ending coming either.....totally not what I expected. Thank you so much for letting me read this! I will definitely recommend this book!
Thanks to Netgalley, publishers, and Meghan Miranda.. This author never disappoints. Each book I is better than the one before. I love all the characters and the interactions. This is another five star book from Meghan Miranda for sure. I’m recommending to the book clubs.!
5 out of 5 stars
Megan Miranda never lets me down. there are certain authors that you just wait excitedly for each release and that is the case with Miranda. Her novels pull me in right away and I absolutely love each of her main characters. This book was just as good as I hoped/expected!
Arden survived something terrible, at six years old she was sleepwalking and she disappeared. She was found three days later in a storm drain by Sean Coleman, a quiet volunteer. Arden's disappearance made the small town of Widow Hills famous as well as Arden and her Mother. Life was never the same and not in a good way. Every time an anniversary of the incident she gets bothered by reporters and harassed by some of the people in her town.
With the twenty year anniversary coming up Arden finally feels safe from the prying eyes of the public. In her small town . She is now named Olivia and no one knows who she is, at least she thinks so but it seems her past is coming back to haunt her.
You know the drill, if you love Megan Miranda then you will really love this novel. If you have not read anything by her but love a good thriller with great characters pick this up and while you are at it read her other books.
Megan Miranda is queen of the slow burn that keeps you guessing until the end. Everyone is a suspect and has a motive. Her novels keep getting better and better. The narrative is not only engaging, but the characters are well developed and all with compelling backstories. A great summer beach read. I highly recommend it!
Loved this, just enough of a creepy factor and plenty of twists. It surprised me, I didn’t even figure it out!
This was such a great book with constant twists and turns. Just when I thought I had it figured out there was another plot twist. I don’t want to give any of the storyline away but would absolutely recommend it
I really enjoyed this book!!
What I loved: The Girl From Widow Hills kept me guessing from page one until the very end. I loved the mix of documents/ calls from the past and the present day. The writing is great - every chapter hangs on a bit of suspense that makes you want to keep reading to know what will happen next. There were several twists and turns I didn’t see coming. One I kind of guessed but didn’t guess the true extent of. I love a good twisty mystery that’s not overly gory. This is somewhat of a domestic/ family mystery but not in the way that’s overdone lately.
What didn’t work for me: I didn’t feel super close to any character or like I really got to know them, and I know that’s by design, but that always feels a little missing in this style of mystery. It makes it hard to root for the narrator, although I was rooting for Olivia and for finding out the truth.
I’d recommend this to: Mystery fans, readers who like Megan Miranda’s other books, readers who enjoy Lisa Jewel and Riley Sager.
Quick read and will keep you on the edge of your seat. A little difficulty in getting into the book but keep going, it becomes clearer as you go what is happening to Olivia and how and why she is having these odd thoughts. Not sure she was fully developed as a character until more towards the ending. I didn't particularly care for the open like ending or how her relationship status was left, but it was ok. Overall, you'll be surprised at the how and when of all the events that are plaguing Olivia. It is definitely a psychological mystery thriller that will keep you reading! I did enjoy the book.
I was provided an Advanced reader copy and was under no obligation to provide a review. The opinions expressed are my own. Many thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
3.5 stars.
A girl trying to leave her past behind after being in the media's eye years prior finds herself in trouble after tripping over the body of a murdered man on the line between her and her neighbor's property after sleepwalking the night before. Now Olivia is a person of interest and in need of answers.
The beginning of this book was a little slow, though this may be due to me not knowing the what page or percent I was on originally until I moved over onto my kindle app on my tablet, then it began to move much faster. I quite enjoyed the confusion it had me with for the last 10%, leading to an ending I hadn't seen coming. This is the third Megan Miranda book I've read and liked, so I hope to read more by her in the future.
This book had an interesting premise. My fault in it is I never felt connected to the main character and the pace was slow for a suspense book. There was a good twist at the end but that could have been developed better. I liked it enough to read more from this author.
I have loved everything by Megan Miranda that I have read and this book was no exception. It was haunting and thrilling. The characters were flawed but realistic and engrossed me in their story, When Olivia was a child she had a different name a name she shed to avoid the consequences of surviving a tragic incident. Olivia had always struggled with sleep walking and one night she wandered in her sleep during a massive storm. Gone for three days Olivia remembered nothing once she as found. After Olivia was found the media and fame changed her and her mother dramatically. Olivia raced away from the attention while her mother appeared to thrive on it. 20 years later the past comes back and Olivia is frantic to remember what happened so she will survive what’s coming. I couldn’t put this one down once I got started, I highly recommend it!
Great mystery that kept me coming back every time I had to put it down! I loved the sleepwalking perspective and the characters were like able! Instagram review to come.
Thanks so much for allowing me the opportunity to read this one. Thriller....um yes! Took me a few days to really sink my teeth into it. But, it picked up, got me invested and I will tell you this much, check your “know it all attitude at the door”! The end will take you for a loop and at least for me, not where I saw this one going.
Check it out, support the author and allow yourself the time to settle in!
I was only a few pages into this when I thought it might be Miranda's best novel yet, and to the very last page I wasn't disappointed.
Rife with tension and suspense and things that make your heart go thump in the night, I couldn't put it down! Fast-paced and sly, this crafty thriller will keep you guessing because everyone's a suspect!
When Arden was a child she was swept away during a violent rainstorm while she was sleepwalking. Several days later she was miraculously found alive. Arden’s disappearance garnered nationwide attention and it only grew stronger after her rescue. Her mother even wrote a book about the ordeal and Arden became known as the girl from Widow Hills. Not all the attention was welcomed. It also attracted stalkers and unsettling fan mail, while Arden suffered the aftermath of the trauma. As a result, she and her mother were forced to move several times and when Arden reached her 18th birthday she changed her name (to Olivia), graduated from college, and never looked back.
That is, until now. The twentieth anniversary of her rescue is approaching. No one in her new town or at the hospital where she works knows her true identity. But that’s about to change. Olivia has begun to sleepwalk again and one night she stumbles over a body in her yard.
The Girl from Widow Hills is a story that builds slowly, with plenty of suspense and a few twists that caught me by surprise. The writing is excellent and the plot is interesting. The characters are varied and add a lot of depth to the story. I found the pace to be rather slow and it didn’t really seem to pick up until the last quarter of the book. I would give it 3.5 stars and I’m looking forward to reading more by Ms Miranda.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for providing a copy of this book for review.
