Since I'm moving into a tiny house, this is great help. I've moved from a normal 1200 square foot home, to a 600 square foot home, so this is helping me learn how to downsize.
Minimalism seems like an easy concept but can be hard to execute. With pictures and to the point descriptions, this book goes in depth in every part of your house where you can live a more minimalist lifestyle. It also helps to explain why minimalism can be helpful to those who may feel trapped under their possessions, and gives a more physiological perspective into minimalism. Useful and practical!
I have always had clutter around my home, as I am not the most motivated person when it comes to finding a place for all of the odds and ends that accumulate. I read this book looking for inspiration and ideas on how to finally get an organized home where everything has its place. While the book was filled with tons of helpful tips, I felt that it would have been better with more photos, as I am a visual person and would have found that more helpful. I am happy to report that after utilizing some of the advice in this book, I have less clutter! My home is not clutter free, but that is a promising start!
Elizabeth Enright Phillips encourages readers to embrace the minimalist life-style and the rewards she feels it has brought to her and her family. Even if you are not ready to move your family to a little house as she has, this book is packed full of very practical advice and great suggestions for decluttering, something that the majority of us know we should do.
Literally taking the reader, room by room, encouraging us to use short, scheduled blocks of time, she offers clear and very doable steps on how to filter through the excessive "mess" of our lives and winnow it done to our necessary and most treasured items. She puts forth the information in very positive, encouraging and supportive way that it's difficult to remain unmoved. Each chapter has tools needed and decisions to be made. The author recognizes that emotions are involved and addresses those as well. Lots of resources are also made available to help the reader in the task set before them.
I undertook decluttering our home two years ago, moving from room to room, type of item, or one piece of furniture at a time in a methodical manner. It felt SO GOOD to have our things placed in their natural 'home', where we used them and could easily find them! It also felt great to dispose of items that we no longer had use for or no longer wanted and recycle what we could by donating to others . It is something easily done in small blocks of time and I now do it each year (some things just seem to naturally migrate to where they don't belong!!).
Ms. Phillips gave me lots of new ideas that I'm eager to try. I highly recommend this book. It earns 4 stars from me!
My thanks to NetGalley and Rockridge Press for allowing me to read a copy of this book in exchange for an unbiased review. All opinions expressed here are my own.
This was a nicely written approach to minimalism. Some same elements as KonMari Method but with different tools and resources. Overall, a nice addition to add to the collection that patrons will likely want to read who are trying to change their habits and simplify their lives.
Thank you netgalley for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
A great book for those looking to simplify and declutter their homes. The author takes you step by step through the process of getting rid of the things you don't need and understanding the benefits of living with less. My only suggestion is to include more pictures of organizational areas. The before and after. I felt I needed the visual as I went a long.
Thank you to Rockridge Press and NetGalley for providing me with an advanced copy of this book.
As a minimalist for nearly eleven years, I do appreciate the sentiment in Phillips new book. I would say it is a bit repetitive; however, it does clearly move through each room in a detailed manner. I would recommend this to someone who is just beginning their journey into minimalism (as opposed to people who have been practicing for years.)
This is a fun workbook if you’re willing to put the time into decluttering. Something like this would take some time but I appreciate that the book is very thorough.
I received an advance review copy but had no obligation to post a review. All opinions are my own.
Wasn't really impressed. A lot of repetitions, basically same things repeated over and over again. Some things are taken to the extreme- does the author really only own 1 pen and 2 pans? How do you cook for 6 people with only 2 pans? What happens when your one lone pen runs out of ink? Why would you want to save clothes that you like but that don't fit you- isn't the whole idea of minimalism is not to keep things that you aren't able to use?
Do you really need a water bottle and a snack every time you set up to purge a room? I found myself rolling my eyes and skimming through.
I wish this book existed a year ago so I could have decluttered before I moved into my house. But this has so much information on how to begin, how not to get overwhelmed with the process and where to take or put everything. For anyone who feels like your house is cluttered or you want to downsize, this is a great book to get you started.
