I found this book quite slow starting off and I stopped reading numerous times. I got through several chapters when it suddenly picked up and became interesting. I found the characters weren’t introduced and described well enough for me to become attached to them but that did change further on. Katie and Sebastian became likeable while the rest, with the exception of the children remained unrealistic. There was a nice storyline to the book but it seemed to take back stage to the side stories of the children. The parents started off front and centre but Gus seems to be forgotten while Monica was there but not given the attention I would have like to see. I just didn’t feel anything one way or the other for the characters and although the book became readable part way through by then it had lost my attention.
Every family is dysfunctional and this family (Gus, Monica and their three grow up children) has no difference. I like this book a lot because you can easily correlate to any family about the challenges they face, tension among the family members. I really enjoy reading this book and especially during this unprecedent time that all of us have to stay home and how to handle the tensions among family members. I highly recommend this book!
There is no one better at delving into the heart of family relationships than Joanna Trollope. In this family of broken relationships, the father's stroke begins a process of change and healing between the parents and their grown children, and among the siblings..
