This is a really wonderful book that introduces children to Mary Anning, the young girl sometimes dubbed "the first paleontologist" for her remarkable discoveries of fossils that helped open up the world of paleontology. The artwork is beautiful and the book gives a sense of Mary and of the times, when she was not allowed to be a part of the world she loved so much because of her gender. A timeline and glossary are provided at the end.

A good children's biography book doesn't just teach children about famous people from history but makes them seem like people we'd want to be friends with. This definitely fits the bill. It's a fantastic resource for teaching science, history and women's studies through a straight up lovely and enjoyable book.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

Dinosaur Lady is about Mary Anning, the first person to discover the field of paleontology. Many of Mary's fossils have been on display in museums and were written about in books and journals, but at that time, she didn't get any credit-because she was a woman!

This book is excellent! It is a fun educational picture book with relevant and easily understandable information. It is told in such a positive and happy tone that it comes off as motivational and has a very can-do attitude about it. The art style in this was super adorable and I would highly recommend having this book in every library, home, and bookstore.

I have been absolutely fascinated by Mary Anning for a few years now, and reading about her pretty much always brings me great joy. Unfortunately, I didn't know anything about her when I was a kid, and I know I would have been fascinated by her life and work, especially during my prehistoric fascination phase. Dinosaur Lady by Linda Skeers, illustrated by Marta Alvarez Miguens, is the exact kind of book that would have fascinated me as a child, and while I'm sorry I didn't get to read it then, I'm glad that it's available now.

This picture book biography offers up Mary Anning's story in a way that kids can understand and relate to, providing facts from her life story. I really appreciated that it focused on more than just her first discovery, as a number of books I've read seem to focus only on her childhood discoveries rather than acknowledging her lifelong works in the new field of paleontology. The timeline and fossil facts included at the end will be incredibly helpful for children looking for an overall picture of her life or understanding of the fossils Anning found. The illustrations are warm and charming and really help to bring her story to life, as well as provide examples of the fossils Anning found.

Any child interested in paleontology, geology, science, adventure, history, or dinosaurs should find something to enjoy and learn from in this fun new picture book biography of Mary Anning. I would definitely recommend it.

5 out of 5 🌟 Be so good, they can't ignore you

'Dinosaur Lady' tells the history of Mary Anning, one of the most famous British scientists and the first Paleontologist. The narration is compelling, and the story is written in a very positive and encouraging tone. The book treats about Victorian-era adversity, a woman had to face and shows how she eventually succeed to be recognized.

What I loved, was rich and brilliant illustrations by Marta Álvarez Miguéns that enriched the story and make it more compelling. Both I and my son were enchanted by the history written by Linda Skeers. I'd love to see more biographies like this one, targeted to the youngest readers.

Thank goodness this book exists because there aren't enough about the great Mary Anning. I love the art, it is very cute, and how it tells the great tragedies in Anning's life without being to harrowing for children. It's a hopeful read and shows how far we've come. Considering that everything about dinosaurs is still targeted as something only for boys, we still have a lot of prejudices to overcome. This book is so perfect and sweet.

Oh. My. Gosh. Educational!

Dinosaur Lady is about Mary Anning, the first paleontologist and OMG this book just screams me! Sure, I'm an adult but I still love an educational children's books full of pretty pictures! Seriously, this book got my nerd senses tingling.

My positives:
1. The design of the cover is GORGEOUS. Patterns, bright colours that draw attention, bones for the title - it all just SCREAMS awesome sauce. And I haven't even opened the book yet!

2. The illustrations inside the book are even better. It's like walking into a museum but instead you're opening up a book. They are memorizing and stunning and gorgeous. So beautiful!

3. Educational terminology like ammonites and belemnites are words I haven't heard since my school days. Even the official names, petricola pholadiformis, made me get thrilled. So much smartiness in one book! And yes, I put a fake word for comedy's sake. I'm hilarious.

4. The story telling and plot is very intriguing and fun to follow. I was really interested since I didn't know Mary's story and now I want to research her!

5. Girl power! Who doesn't love a good story about a girl being totally wicked cool?

6. There are also facts at the back of this book. Who doesn't love a good appendix for learning? Especially when they include big words with definitions, timelines and more educational goodies for young learners!

My negatives:
1. Mary's design doesn't perfectly match with the backgrounds, but that isn't much of a negative. It's more of an artistic pet peeve of mine. It affects the story in zero ways, but it's still something to consider. I don't think the target audience, kids, will care. Only very, very picky adults.

Overall, this book is totally awesome! Whether it's for a bed time reading, general story time or for educational purposes, I would highly recommend adding this book to your shelf! I will definitely be looking for more books like this one in the near future!

Five out of five stars!

Thank you to NetGalley and Sourcebooks for giving me an opportunity to read this book!

As the parent of a Dino obsessed 5 year old girl I was very interested in this book. I plan to buy a print copy for my daughter as soon as it's released. She will love it. I had no idea the first paleontologist was a woman. I found the book informative and fascinating and I know my daughter will as well.

What a sweet book! The format on this was kind of crazy (pages split vertically and no way to view it horizontal) but the writing and illustrations are just wonderful. I cannot WAIT to buy this one for my dinosaur-loving niece to show her how important a curious, fossil-loving girl was to the history of paleontology!

Mary Anning discovered fossils before most people thought to study them. She lives along the Jurassic Coast, where many fossils have since been found. At a very young age she made discoveries that the men of science had not discovered yet. She found fossilized poop. She discovered a flying reptile skeleton.

Yet, despite all her discoveries, she couldn't get into the science world becasue she was just a woman. The men didn't mind taking what she gave them, but didn't allow her to go to their gatherings.

So, she did what she could, and sold fossils from her store. She is now known to have discovered five major species.

Very good, easy to read picture book, that gives kids an idea of her amazing life.

Dinosaur Lady tells the story of Mary Anning, the first paleontologist. She made amazing discoveries, but she wasn't considered a scientist because she was a woman. This book does a great job of explaining the work Mary did and the challenges she faced through kid-friendly text and beautiful illustrations. Little girls will enjoy reading the story of a woman that was the first in a typically male-dominated field and dinosaur lovers will enjoy reading about being a paleontologist and the many fossils that were discovered.

What a delight to learn all of these wonderful facts about the first female paleontologist, Mary Anning! I was not aware of her name, much less the fact that she made so many staggering discoveries - what an inspiration, to read of such a dynamic lady!
Sure to be a hit with any child with scientific aspirations.
Beautifully illustrated with engaging text.

This is a fantastic book about the paleontologist Mary Anning. It shows Mary’s perseverance and obstacles being a female in the scientific community in the 1800s. It was not wordy and engaging enough to keep even young children entertained.

Finding interesting biographies for elementary age children is a huge challenge. Skeers does an excellent job of telling the story of fossil hunter Mary Anning in a way that will engage children without overwhelming them with information. Charming illustrations clarify the text. For libraries in need of picture book biographies, this one fits the bill
