Another great story from R.C. Ryan! I'm really enjoying this series. I would still recommend even if you haven't read all of them. I really liked the characters slow burn romance. The suspense kept the story interesting. Recommended!
Overall My Kind of Cowboy was a good story. I enjoyed the sweet romance between Brand and Avery, but was hoping that Brand would have shown a little more resistance to accepting Avery's help since he was so against having a physical therapist. I really liked the Merrick family and look forward to the next in the series.
This romance featuring a city girl and a cowboy really stole my heart. Brand starts out as a grumpy cowboy who has been raised that pain is part of being a rancher. When his family intervenes, and has a physical therapist hired to come to the ranch and help him recouperate, he never thought that it would be the beautiful girl from the city, Avery.
Avery was ready to go out to the country, but she didn't know that everyone in town would assume she was a man, because her name was Avery. She also wasn't expecting her client to be so handsome, and to have feelings for her. She's running away from a bad relationship, and she doesn't even know quite how bad.
This has an element of stalking in the background, so please tread lightly if this is a trigger for you. For me, this added a high stakes element to the story, and gave us a way for the characters to learn to trust each other. Highly recommend the book, and I am looking forward to more in this series to come!
I enjoyed this book that is set in small town Wyoming near the Grand Tetons. The Merrick family is wonderful and you get to know some of them, I wish they would have done more with all the family member- we missed getting to know how Meg liked Avery and others. Brand got hurt on a fallen off his horse and his grandma send for help - Avery is a physical therapist and takes a break from her home. Avery is a caring, smart, fun, and up for any adventure. Brand is not really into this new person in his space but decided it might hurt to get help for his pain.
This book the flow was off and felt a little old school romance novel. There wasn't much chemistry coming off the pages and some of it felt way too much "old school cowboy" for 2020. Liked the parts about Ham and the town gossip- wanted more of this. The ending also was way too fast and needed more with her dad and what happened. Liked the add suspense to the book. I will still read the rest of this series to see what the brothers get for their HEA. There is a tiny bit of steam.
Overall, 3 stars and 2 steam.
Ah, loved this book so much I couldn't put it down and devoured it in 1 day. I spend the entire read with a big smile on my face and am in love with both Brand Merrick and Avery Grant. I honestly could not get enough of these two and this wonderful new cast of characters! So GOOD! My Kind of Cowboy was such a fantastic read and I'm super excited to see what's next from this author. Happy reading everyone!!
LOVE RC RYAN!! This book is a bit different then the others. Its a bit slow moving but it is in depth. Rich characters as always. Ryan weaves a beautiful story with this book. She has a way of drawing the reader in and making you feel as if you are in the story with them. Brand and Avery are a unique couple and it was a pleasure to see that develop without all the instant sheet burning. I like to see a story develop and this one did not disappoint! I received this book from NetGalley for an honest review!
4.5 ⭐️
Okay. I’m going to admit that I have secretly been judging cowboy romance novels-assuming I wouldn’t like them because I literally know nothing about that life and know zero cowboys myself. Well. I was totally wrong! Guys- a cowboy romance is just a contemporary romance - with cowboy stuff happening. 🤯
This book had it all, hot, hardworking, smart characters. Sweet family dynamics. Gorgeous setting descriptions. A little mystery and suspense. Plenty of steam. And my fave- a really sweet love story. Brand and Avery were a great couple and I definitely felt their connection.
I totally loved this book and really encourage my romance loving friends to give it a try! I am so excited that this is the start to a series - I will be waiting in line for more of the Merrick family!
A wonderful slow burn romance set on a ranch and small town in the foothills of the Teton Mountain range of Montana. Avery is a physiotherapist charged with helping rancher Brand to get wholly back on his feet He doesn't think he needs her help after all he is up and walking even if it is with a limp He may be stubborn but he is about to meet a woman just as stubborn and she soon has him doing what she wants and when danger from her city past catches up with her Brand will step up to keep her safe The thing that really made this story is the other members of the Merrick family especially Brands brothers. This is a slow burn romance that will leave you wanting more
A sexy cowboy and the woman he falls in love with, would die for! What an excellent read!
My Kind of Cowboy by R.C. Ryan is the first book in her new Wranglers of Wyoming series. What a great start to what is stacked up to be a fantastic series. The plot is enticing, filled with romance, action and suspense. The two main characters physical therapist Avery Grant and cowboy & rancher Brand Merrick are both well-developed, likable characters. Traveling physical therapist Avery is hired by Brand's grandmother to do therapy after Brand's fall from a horse injured his right leg, not that Brand is interested in doing physical therapy. As they get to know each other they start falling for each other. When trouble follows Avery to Wyoming from her hometown Brand is there to keep her safe. There are two more Merrick brothers to look forward to reading about as they fall in love. Can't wait.
I've only recently started reading novels by R.C. Ryan, so I was happy to get in on the first novel in the new Wranglers of Wyoming series, and, although I felt a bit put off at the outset of this novel, which I'll get to, in the end, I stayed up to finish reading it at 6:00 a.m. this morning, and it gets 4.5 stars from this reader.
The novel opens with a prologue, set 20 years earlier, with the old Butcher Ranch house on fire, and a death in that fire. While it does give a bit of early family history, I didn't find it much help when I got to Chapter One, set in the present day, containing 4 generations of the Merrick family, all living and working together on the Merrick Ranch, and all introduced so quickly that it was had to tell who was who, a problem which could have been averted by a simple family tree preceding the prologue or Chapter One.
We soon learn that Brand Merrick, one of the 3 children who survived the house fire in the prologue, is now a grown man and a wrangler on the Merrick Ranch. He recently suffered multiple breaks in his leg, after being thrown from his horse during a storm. He's healed but still limping, his leg held together with titanium rods, but he ended his physical therapy 2 weeks early, is not terribly successful at hiding his pain when getting around, and not at all happy to learn from this grandmother that physical therapist, Avery Grant, has been hired to come to the ranch for 6 weeks to provide additional physical therapy for Brand while there. To say he's isn't happy about this plan is putting it mildly.
Big surprise--Avery Grant is not the male physical therapist they are expecting, but a woman, and an attractive one at that, nor is she local--this is Devil's Door, Wyoming, after all, and she's a city gal, and as flummoxed by the large Merrick family as I was, but she's certainly not afraid of horses or hard work, and volunteers to help muck stalls, and is happy to explore the large ranch and beautiful Wyoming countryside either alone, with Liz, the photographer in the family, or with Brand, who figures that after a day of riding on horseback along with him, she'll soon be heading back to city she came from, happy to leave the busy, hardworking ranch and its inhabitants behind, but he and his family are about to be surprised, Brand most of all, because he becomes both impressed by and attracted to Avery, and the attraction is mutual.
As the novel progressed, I became more and more interested in its well-drawn characters, and the effect that getting to know Avery had on all of them. Then, in what I assumed would be the usual contemporary western romance, this turned out to be more of a romantic suspense novel, as we learn that Avery appears to have a stalker--possibly her jilted boyfriend, whom she broke up with when she learned that he was only seeing her because he wanted to get asked to join her father's thriving medical team of cardiothoracic surgeons, considered among the best in the nation.
Not long after she ended that relationship, her car was keyed from front to back, then, a nasty note was left on the door to her apartment, written in her shade of lipstick. The police in her home town didn't take either event seriously, but Avery was glad to head for far-off Wyoming to take the job at the Merrick Ranch. But now she's getting somewhat eerie and threatening text messages from a blocked number, and although she has her suspicions, she hasn't mentioned any of this to the Merricks, even as the texts become more and more frightening, and a mysterious package arrives for her, which is when she finally confides her fears to Brand.
Except for some character confusion at the outset, I found myself liking the Merrick family members more and more as the novel progressed, thoroughly enjoying their family dynamic as well as this well-written, slightly steamy, entertaining and suspenseful read. I'm looking forward to following this series and can't wait to discover which member of the Merick family will be featured next.
I voluntarily read an advance reader copy of this novel. The opinions expressed are my own.
Review: 3 stars
This is the first book in the Wranglers of Wyoming series and the first book of R.C. Ryan's that I've read. I really wanted to absolutely love everything about this book but, for me, it fell flat. While I enjoyed the overall story, there were times it was just too much. It started off completely heartbreaking but after that we were introduced to the Merrick family in one lump instead of getting to know everyone overtime. It took me a bit to track who was married to whom and where they fell along the family tree. There were a few times I found myself skipping over part of the story to move ahead.
Brand and Avery have their work cut out for them.
This enthralling story grabs your heart from the beginning with a tragic prologue from twenty years before. When we catch up to the present time, we already know the hurt that Brand is carrying, that his whole family has shouldered, and get an instant feel for how tough this ranching family really is.
Avery is summoned to provide physical therapy for Brand's injured leg, and the story deftly weaves a magic spell as everyone in the family benefits from her therapeutic touch. There's a danger that has followed her, though, giving our hero a chance to save her in return.
The Merricks are a wonderful, loving family and I really enjoyed seeing so many generations all thriving together. I was swept away by the beautiful storytelling and visual feel of the setting. I highly recommend this to everyone who loves contemporary cowboy romances. I voluntarily reviewed an ARC of this book.
Avery and Brand!
Wyoming rancher Brand Merrick needs physical therapy so his badly broken leg can heal correctly but when he refused to get help, his grandmother arranged for a therapist to stay at the ranch so the therapist could work around Brand’s schedule. Slight problem, the therapist is a woman Dr. Avery Grant, but when he tries to get Avery to leave but she has more patience than he thought she would have being from the big city and she gets him to understand that doing the therapy will hopefully make the pain go away and the leg stronger.
My Kind of Cowboy has a lot of romance and a little bit of romantic suspense but I’ll let the author take you down that path. R. C. Ryan makes the reader feel the wide open spaces of Wyoming and the families that settled there for generations.
If you like romance especially western romance, My Kind of Cowboy is the one for you! My Kind of Cowboy is the first in the Wranglers of Wyoming series and I really want to read the next one soon.
I voluntarily read and reviewed an advanced copy of this book from NetGalley. All thoughts and opinions are my own.
The Merrick men are a rough and tough group. They work from sunup to sundown. When they fall in love and marry, it is for life. There are 4 generations living in the ranch house. Grandma has put her foot down and the men are not happy with her. She has hired a physical therapist for Brand, who injured his leg in an accident. Avery Grant has been warned that her patient is a stubborn man. When she arrives at the ranch, they are all stunned. They expected a man. Never underestimate the power of a woman. She is whipping Brand in shape and falling in love at the same time. Her past has followed her to the ranch. It is all for one.
I love how the author has described the Grand Tetons and the wildlife that exists. Simply breath taking. Billy, the family cook, just made me hungry. I wouldn't mind him cooking for me.
In the foothills of the Teton Mountains, Avery Grant, a physical therapist, leaves Michigan and arrives on the Merrick ranch to help with the therapy on Brand Merrick, a stubborn cowboy. Brand doesn't think he needs help and he is doing fine even if he is limping around after a major fall. He is not thrilled about accepting any help from anyone. But Avery not only helps his limp but also warms his family. She is caring, smart, and determined. It doesn't take long as she begins to fall in love with the Merrick family and also Brand ... winning his heart.
A small town vibe and slow-burn romance give way to an interesting read that leaves you feeling good at the end. This was a great introduction to the Merrick family through generations and also the descriptions and beauty of Wyoming.
If you like sexy and hard-headed cowboys, strong and fearless women, a hint of suspense and a slow warm romance, you will enjoy this book for sure. There is also a bit of suspense along the way as well.
This was a rather bucolic read from everything from the ranch settings to the family interactions. There was supposed to be some tension between Avery, a physiotherapist, and Brand who was in need of physiotherapy but that was pretty low key. Even the love scenes were pretty discreet. There was some tension with the threat of a stalker so all was not so picture perfect. Well written with great descriptions of the Wyoming countryside. This is one to read if you need an easy, feel good book.

BOOK BLURB
This New York Times bestselling author delivers a "page-turning romance" (Nora Roberts) about a city girl on the run and the strong, protective cowboy who keeps her safe.
Brand Merrick is a take-charge cowboy who loves a challenge and being in the thick of the action on his family ranch. When Brand takes a fall from his horse and the town doctor orders physical therapy, he doesn't intend to rest for long. They make a compromise that the physical therapist will come stay on the ranch for six weeks so Brand can do his exercises between his duties running the ranch. But Brand wasn't expecting to be working with beautiful, tough city-girl Avery.
Avery Grant has no patience for the sexy cowboy who makes it clear therapy is a waste of his time. She won't back down, especially since she came to Wyoming for another reason... to get away from the mysterious threats she keeps receiving. But the threats have followed her to the Merrick ranch. And soon, Brand isn't feeling quite so hostile toward his new therapist... in fact, keeping her safe becomes his only priority.
My Thoughts
4 generations of Merricks are the backbone of this story.
Due to tragedy when Bo Merrick and his young sons Brand, Casey and Jonah lost beloved wife/mother Leigh in a house fire the 4 moved in with their older relatives.
The Patriarch of the family Hammond Merrick, or Ham to all along with Bo’s father Egan and Meg Bo’s mother, one of two females in a sea of males, along with Bo’s sister Liz.
Their ranch foreman Chet Doyle and cook/all-around housekeeper Billy Caldwell round out the close knit bunch.
This is a strong story about family ties, family relationships and family issues that interweave within the relationship that forms between physical therapist Avery Grant and her client Brand Merrick.
Of course being set in Wyoming the beauty of the herds of wild horse, the numerous and lush wildflowers along with closeness to Grand Teton mountains are also a part of the story as well.
The town of Devil’s Den plays its own role also as it is the closest shopping area for ranch supplies, eating establishments, a doctor, police force and etc for the family.
What I especially loved though was how easily outsider to the area Avery Grant fit in with not only the Merricks but how she adapted to her surroundings with joy as the family members were concerned with her coming from a big city to out in the middle of nowhere basically.
However all was not sunshine and roses as Avery apparently did not randomly choose her assignment as Brand’s therapist without her own agenda, an agenda that included being as far away as possible from someone sending her threatening texts after her arrival in Wyoming.
What was intended as a bit of suspense instead to me felt more like a bit of unneeded drama as in the end how it played out was almost like an afterthought, for my taste anyway.
All in all though this is the kind of Romantic Suspense I enjoy, one filled with new sights and sounds and people I can relate to all the way.

On every book read as soon as it is done and written up for review it is posted on Goodreads and Netgalley, once released then posted on Amazon, Barnes and Nobles as well.
This was my first book by this author and I enjoyed the story. The characters were very likeable with the relationships between the family members were entertaining and sweet. The misunderstanding of Avery's gender was quite the little joke but she fit in perfectly with the family.
“You’re all I think about. This is all I think about. Whether it’s morning chores or riding in the hills, you’re with me. Oh, baby, the need for you is like an ache.”
My Kind of Cowboy is my kind of book—a beautiful, suspenseful love story, with an ending sure to leave a smile on your face.
I loved this one from R.C. Ryan! The start of a new series—set on the Merrick Ranch in Wyoming—it’s filled with all the goodness a cowboy-loving romance reader is sure to enjoy. Tight-knit family, traditional values, lashings of humor and sweetness, and a little bit of spice to keep the tension alive. Brand and Avery share a palpable chemistry and are both so likable, it’s impossible not to root for a HEA for them. And the family that surrounds them? Absolutely charming!
I’m already looking forward to more in this series, especially <fingers crossed> something special for Liz and Chet. Definitely one to add to your TBR.

My Kind of Cowboy is the first R.C. Ryan book I've read, but it won't be the last. I enjoyed it very much. It was well written, had characters that were enjoyable and the story line kept me engaged.
Brand Merrick is the oldest of the Merrick great-grandchildren. When he fell off of his horse and injured his leg, he cut his physical therapy short because he didn't want his great-grandfather, grandfather, father and brothers to have to pick up his slack. While he wasn't totally healed, he's now paying the price and his grandmother has taken notice and taken things into her own hands by hiring a physical therapist to help him out. Something Brand is less than thrilled about.
Avery Grant lives is Michigan, but works for a group that lends out their physical therapists when needed, so she's headed to Wyoming to try her hand at helping Brand heal up his leg. Avery is looking forward to the new surroundings since she has a very strained relationship with her father and she's been receiving threatening texts, but the local authorities don't think it's anything to worry about.
As Avery starts her time at the ranch, she finds that Brand is stubborn and that she's going to have her work cut out for her, but she's up to the challenge. She isn't afraid to help with chores and that helps to endear her to the family and Brand begins to take notice too. Slowly he realizes that she's there to help him and he allows her to start the therapy. Will there be more that develops between them?
I really enjoyed this entire family and the interactions between all of the generations. I'm really looking forward to the next book in this series!
