Top Shelf Productions’ Rascal by Jean-Luc Deglin is a graphic novel about the life of a woman and her newly acquired cat. It is 128 pages and each page consists of four panels that succinctly deliver a glimpse inside a day in the life of a cat owner. You might be wondering if four panels per page is enough to tell a story but, surprisingly, it is. I found that, although they were all narratively connected, each page of Rascal could serve as a stand alone comic since they expertly paint a scene even with it’s limited panels. The reason for it being structured in this way is that according to Top Shelf’s website Rascal was, “originally serialized as Crapule in the Franco-Belgian magazine Spirou.”

While reading Rascal I found myself being immediately captured by every page. Perhaps this is due to the fact that I am a cat owner myself, but I couldn’t help but be touched by the endearing scenes of this unnamed woman and her little black cat Rascal. There is one scene in particular that made me tear up and countless that made me smile or laugh. It was truly heartwarming to read. I think that the art was really adorable as well, which is consistent throughout the book with blue, black, and white tones. I also felt like each expression of both the woman and Rascal were drawn really well and were successful in conveying the story being told. A scene in particular that stuck with me in this graphic novel is when Rascal is poking out from behind a door and it made me smile, because the eyes were drawn so large that Rascal looked so innocent and curious!

Ultimately, I believe this graphic novel really captures the everyday moments of living with a cat, and I think it is a perfect read for all the cat lovers out there. Rascal by Jean-Luc Deglin is out on May 10 and is available now on Amazon for preorder so make sure not to miss out on such an adorable book!

This was such a cute comic! As someone with cats its so relatable. i laughed so much. my cats do a lot of the same things as Rascal. The art style was very pleasing to the eye. I liked that everything was lighter shades and then Rascal being black really drew your eye to him in each panel.

Rascal is a neighbours cat being looked after by a cat hating character who doesn't take to Rascal as he lives up to his name!

With dark humour I'd say this isn't for kids really!

It was light hearted and a fun but odd read!

Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!

I received Rascal from NetGalley. Thank you very much, it was perfect timing as I’m currently working from home with three furry coworkers! Rascal follows an adorable and typical cat and the fun times that come with being a pet parent. From naps and snuggles to destroyed furniture and cat scratches. I highly recommend this for every and any cat parent or animal lover! I think we can all relate.

This isn’t a long book, but I think it would be great as a coffee table type of book. Something that is fun to read and come back to. Plus it’s a great conversational piece for cat lovers.

This is a sweet comic about cat ownership in all its ups and downs. I found many parts of it very true to life with my own black cats. If you want some light reading and enjoy cats, this is a great choice.

I received an advanced readers copy of this book from the publisher and Net Galley in return for a fair review.

This was so cute! It's basically a series of webcomics about various interactions between a woman and her cat and as someone who owns two cats I have to say there is just so much relatable content here. Probably every single page was something that one of my cats has done at one point and it was so funny to see them all lined up here together. Definitely recommend this one to cat lovers!

The story of a young woman and a cat that she wasn't intending to get, and did not know what to do with.

But for those who have cats, this shows all the things that cats are known for, and more.

A fun little book of quick cartoons touching on all things that cats do. From chasing bugs to kicking up cat litter.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

This is a darling cartoon strip about a young woman who ends up with a lovable and thoroughly annoying (and typical) little cat, and their ensuing life together. Cat owners will smile at the many familiar situations, like when she goes out in public with bare arms and is asked if she was in a bramble patch because she's been playing with her kitten. Pouncing on the covers, moodiness, hairball horrors and all the familiar goods and bads of cat ownership are covered in delightful art. This will be a good read for any cat lovers that will surely bring a lot of smiles to kids and adults alike.

I read a temporary digital ARC of this book for the purpose of review.

~ ARC received in exchange for an honest review ~

As other reviewers have said, I received a text only version of this title so difficult to rate a graphic novel without the graphics.

I was given a copy of Rascal by Jean-Luc Deglin by Netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

Something went wrong and I only received the text of this graphic novel. What I read seemed cute so I can only rate based on that.

I have been a cat lover all my life, having grown up with a blue-eyed Siamese rascal who cast a spell over our family. So naturally this story appealed to me, and for sure reminded me of the days when our cat would regally sit in front of the fridge and stonily glare at us to "feed me!" hee hee.

My only issue with this book is that it is way too short!

I wanted more of Rascal and all the shenanigans.

It's funny, heartwarming, and a light-hearted look at the furry felines that rule while other animals drool. (Though, let me be clear I am a fan of dogs ... and pandas ... and sloths ... and llamas ... and otters ... and owls ... and trash pandas ... and penguins ... basically all animals but NOT cockroaches or ants or spiders or creepy crawlies.)

So who would love this book? I think anyone who loves a good chuckle!

Thank you to the author, publisher and NetGalley for the ARC of #Rascal!

I thought this was a super cute and fun story. It was charming and had me saying “awww” many times. I would definitely recommend this as a light hearted read for children.

This is a graphic novel so the formatting just must not be there or something. In my copy there were no graphics so I feel like I'm missing half the story. But the part that was there was decent, I just feel like I'm missing part of it so I feel like I can fairly rate this.

Basically a book about how mischievous yet cute cats are. Might as well be called Riley bc this is basically his day to day. The illustrations are adorable and every cat-fancier will find Rascal familiar and his frustrated caretaker relatable.

I received an arc of this book from #netgalley in exchange for an honest review.

This comic was adorable! The art style is really cute and every panel was both relatable and laugh-out-loud funny. I would love to own a copy and would absolutely buy this for my friends and family members who are cat-lovers.

Rascal is a love story for anyone who has owned a cat, or more accurately been owned BY a cat. Sometimes, our pets just happen to us. This is the story of Rascal, the author's cat who just kind of...happened. The book follows Rascal and his long suffering owner from kitten-hood to a fully grown adult cat. The adventures and mishaps in-between will have readers laughing and looking to their own pets with plenty of understanding. I highly suggest this book for every cat lover.

This was an odd little book, and I don't think it came through on my Kindle correctly. It was all out of order and messed up.

I requested and received an e-ARC from NetGalley and IDW Publishing in exchange for an honest review.

Did I put down this book and say “Wow! That was amazing”? No, but I did enjoy this book. The illustrations were cute. The book depicts exactly what living with a cat is like; one minute they love you, the next they are tearing your arm apart because you tried to pet them one second too long. Rascal is a giant turd throughout most of the book which seems accurate based on all the cats my family has had over the years.

I think this book would make a great gift for cat lovers; they will see a lot of similarities with their own cat(s) and have a good chuckle.

3.5 to 4 out of 5 stars

This is very cute -- basically a catalog of cat behavior. The art is simple and effective. Probably will be enjoyed most by cat owners.

Thanks very much for the review copy!!
