A Duke By Any Other Name (Extended Preview) by Grace Burrowes 4 stars
This is an extended preview of the forthcoming novel in the Rogues to Riches Series. This book focuses on Lady Althea Wentworth who we first met in "My One and Only Duke". She is the younger sister of the main character Quinn Wentworth. The other main character is the Nathaniel, Duke of Rothhaven - he is mysterious and reclusive. Why he is that way is not explained in the extended preview. I guess I will have to wait for the book to come out before I know his background; there are hints of a miserable childhood - maybe abuse.
Lady Althea wants to talk with the Duke and finds a novel way to get his attention. She send her pigs to root around his orchard... talk about usual messengers. I really liked this preview and hope I will have the good fortune to get an ARC of the book.
Thank you Netgalley and Forever (Grand Central Publishing) for this Extended Preview ARC.
This extended preview does what it sets out to do - whets the appetite for more.
I liked both Nathaniel & Althea & enjoyed their verbal spats. I was intrigued by the hints of their backstories & wanted to find out more.
Yes I do want to read the whole novel
This is just a sample of the book and it promises to be a typical Burrowes historical romance, quite entertaining.
Althea, a duke’s sister, was considered a spinster and her neighbor Nathaniel, a duke, was a confirmed eccentric. They are both hiding out in the country and avoiding polite society for their own reasons. The duke is hiding a secret and Althea is uncomfortable with her recent surge in her position in society. It had started off very enticing. I can see how these two can use each other to overcome their blockades to society. I can’t wait to read the rest of their story and discover more about each of their families. Already I can tell Nathaniel is deeply devoted and loyal to his family, tender and playing the role of the Dread Duke. Althea is witty, not conventional, and can quickly deliver a well played set down. These two will be fun! Looking forward to April.
Grace Burrowes is an author I always enjoy. This was no exception. I had become engaged with the characters, and was anticipating the resolution of their problems -- some of which seemed insurmountable. Another winner for me.
An absolute joy to read from start to finish! This book is beautifully written and so witty, I found myself wanting to go back and reread passages. I can’t wait to read more.
The meet cute was, well, cute. The banter was fun, though I felt we were living a little too much in the heroine's mind at times. Her internal worries was a little distracting. However, over all a fun read, I look forward to seeing where this goes.
This was not for me. The writing style was primarily what wasn't working for me--it felt a bit too convoluted and I had trouble staying engaged. I also wasn't a huge fan of either hero or heroine, I couldn't connect to them and neither felt real. I also thought the set-up was a bit of a stretch. I know Burrows is a popular historical romance author so she's likely a good fit for another reader!
I didn't want to stop reading... please we need the rest of it. A great regency setting and i can picture the fields, the lanes, the pigs! The duke strolling through an vaulting onto a balcony, very improper but makes you smile. Her lady, while witty and full of character, socially awkward and in-needing of this Dukes guidance. I can't wait to read the rest of it and see where this friendship/relationship goes. Thank you for sharing.
Terrific! Wonderful hero and heroine, both with interesting problems. I look forward to reading the full book.
Oh I think this book is going to be absolutely delightful after reading the preview! Secluded dukes always make me think of Beauty and the Beast and I wouldn’t be mad if this had some of those vibes in the full book. Add in some prize hogs?? Yes please! Can’t wait to read the rest of it!
