This was a motivating read. It is a practical help to those who have worked with goals and vision casting before and those who have never thought of doing this.
I've read almost all of Michael Hyatt's books and I have found that he does a fantastic job of sharing from his own experience. As usual, he shares of how he has implemented steps in his own business which has led to the development, growth, and success in his own life as well as the life of his team members. I'm more of a details, behind-the-scenes person but with having to lead in various ways, I'm finding that I need more vision to guide those I lead. The Vision Driven Leader gives direction to how to best lead a team. Stories of how others lead with vision are helpful in seeing it work out in real life in practical ways.
I have been a long time fan of Michael Hyatt and all the great information he has been sharing for the past few years! The subject for The Vision Driven Leader really stuck out to me because, if I am really honest, I don’t feel like I am a good leader naturally; but as a co-business owner I have a responsibility to lead and thus direct the vision for my own business. Very early on in his book, Michael Hyatt explains: “Vision is the essential ingredient for successful leadership. There’s no substitute. Without it, influence fades along with the crowds. This is especially true in business. Unless you, as a leader, have a clear picture of the destination where you want your company to be in three to five years, you’ve got nothing that will inspire people to follow you.”
Michael Hyatt covers 10 questions in The Vision Driven Leader:
The first two questions help the reader understand what vision is and why it is important. The following five questions dig into drafting what Michael calls your “vision script.” The last three questions prepare you for what to expect after your vision script it drafted. He helps you learn where to go with all this knowledge and what it looks like to put it into action!
I originally purchased the Audible version of this book, but also have the ebook version on my iPad to highlight quotes throughout!
Michael Hyatt lays out a clear path for leaders to create a compelling vision, to communicate that vision with your team and to execute with focus and clarity.
The focus of the book is on the development of the "vision script", a document that allow you to create a plan for the next 3-5 years for your business, organization, or brand. By answering five questions and considering four categories, the book walks you through developing each part of a "vision script".
The Vision Driven Leader is a necessary part of the Michael Hyatt series of books, and in many ways is a driving book in understanding the rest. Your "vision script" should be the driving force behind setting goals, planning your year, day or weeks, and communicating well.
Michael Hyatt does it again. After several books about managing personal leadership he turns his sights toward a topic that every business and ministry leader talks about every single week - Vision. After delineating between leaders and managers, Michael Hyatt describes a series of questions that will help you write a vision script and make it better. This book will be helpful for anyone attempting to lead with vision!
A good read for aspiring leaders on vision. I enjoyed the stories and examples he used. Real people and situations.
Michael Hyatt has proven his leadership skills time and again with the many successes of his company. He does a great job of taking real-life leadership skills and distilling his knowledge in practical and actionable ways. The Vision Driven Leader is another example of this. This was another great and informative book from Hyatt.
The Vision-Driven Leader (Baker, 2020) is another book by Michael Hyatt destined to hit the top of the New York Times best-seller list.
Always well-organized, Hyatt interacts with the “10 questions to focus your efforts, energize your team, and scale your business” (subtitle) describing successful and failed examples of each principle. He answers the challenging questions too such as the difference between risky and stupid in terms of business strategy. As a manual for developing and communicating vision for any sector, Hyatt is both practical and repeatable.
This strength is also the potential drawback to the book. There are times when vision and the strategy arising from it are nebulous, even counter-intuitive. What some see as a pie-in-the-sky, almost utopian “vision,” is really just karma (or dumb luck or divine providence, depending on your faith). As much as Hyatt would like to systematize vision, for every futuristic risk bearing incomparable reward, there are tens (even hundreds) of failed dreams that just didn’t work. Just as there are common themes in the successes, so also there are common themes in the failures, and only hindsight reveals what was “vision” and those ideas that were “unreasonable dreams;” those observations that were wishful thinking and those mindsets that were simply “lacking vision.”
In the meantime, a company can be employing all the “right strategies” and end up being “unsuccessful” because you cannot assess a vision’s “success” (or lack thereof) until at least five years later. As Hyatt gives examples of both successful and now dead organizations, one cannot help but notice vision was only one factor among others in their long term survival (or lack thereof).
I willingly recommend the book while keeping these cautions in mind.

I have been following the author for a while as I appreciate his writing style when it comes to breaking down the content into manageable bites. With the new challenges that the world is facing, it is more important than ever to have leaders that are able to navigate the waters. In “The Vision Driven Leader,” Michael Hyatt outlines the steps that can help anyone create a compelling vision for his/her company along with support for how to get buy in from everyone involved. This book helps to aid with giving clarity while outlining the differences between a mission, a vision, a strategy and values and offers an actual Vision Script that the author uses in his own company. This is an invaluable resource for current and aspiring leaders available on all platforms on March 31st. I highly recommend this book. I volunteered to read an advance copy of this book provided by Netgalley.
The Vision Driven Leader walks you through, step-by-step, how to create a compelling and inspiring Vision Script to define what’s next for your company 3-5 years from now. It helps you clearly differentiate mission, vision, strategy, and values, and it gives you several examples and anecdotes of great vision as opposed to failed company/initiatives with poor vision. I appreciate that Michael included a full copy of the Vision Script for his company, which gives great insight into a model vision across his company's team, products, marketing, and impact.
I heartily recommend this book to every business leader, from Fortune 500 executives to start-up entrepreneurs. Everyone will benefit from taking time with this book, creating your vision, and using this book to guide you through communication with your stakeholders.
Full disclosure: I received an advance copy of this book, and I’m providing my honest review. I found this extremely valuable in creating a new version of Vision Script for my company, and I know you will too.
I highly recommend Michael Hyatt's new book, Vision Driven Leader. Not only does he make the compelling case for why vision is the crucial first step for any business or venture, he also gives you the tools to create your own vision. Creating vision is not only critical for having a successful business, it also is necessary for creating a life that is all your own. Whether you are leading a company, a family, a team of many or a team of one, The Vision Driven Leader is a must read.
