Thank you NetGalley and Dover Publishing for approving my request to review this book.
I was immediately drawn to the cover and its details; I knew I needed this book. It is rich with details and history, for the artist and his art.
I loved looking through the gallery of drawings and learning about Paul Calle's process. It is page after page of inspiration. It's always interesting to learn about the process and tools used of other artists; this information is a great learning tool for those looking to improve.
There are chapters to discuss form, nature drawings, perspective, figures, and sketching. Learning new ways to make corrections and handle composition is important, and I was thrilled to find information on these topics.
As a beginner, I found a lot of value in this book and realized how much further I want to study certain topics. I think this is an excellent book and that artists of all levels can enjoy and learn from it for years to come.
Highly recommend!
Calle has made quite a mark on society with his illustrations, so I really enjoyed the re-publishing of this book to learn more about his background and the process for some of his art. There is also a substantial initial section with information about the general history of graphite/pencil art overall and differences between different types of graphite, paper, erasers, and other accessories or materials. The rest of the book has instructions with almost conversational descriptions, suitable for intermediate-to-advanced artists or for art instructors, but enjoyable for the novice to look through as well. The art and illustrations are all gorgeous and wonderful to browse through, of course. I also enjoyed the added commentary and updates from Chris Calle (Paul's son, also an accomplished artist himself).
Paul Calle is famous for his pencil artwork; clients include NASA, multiple magazines, U.S.P.S. and the National park service. This book was previously published in 1975 and has since been revised by his son. Although, this book is 45 years old, the subject matter taught is timeless and who better to teach then a master in the art. Query Paul Calle and you will see his great pencilwork.
This book is a fascinating journey into the mind of a master pencil artist and how a simple line draw in a specific direction can render a dynamic, moving piece of art. Paul’s medium of choice is an HB pencil, and with this simple tool, he is able to evoke emotion and tell a story while creating a beautiful work of art.
The techniques taught are invaluable to any artist whether a novice or professional. I know, after reading this book, my artwork will improve.
I received an electronic copy of this book through NetGalley for my honest opinion.
