I am a pet lover and have had pets I lost—and, with that, a real sense of myself. I wanted to read this book because the thought that a pet may have known me in a former life or will in a future fascinated me. The author provides ample evidence, with case studies, of pets having known us from past lives or will return to us in a future life. They may not come as we now know them, but they will come. Of course, there were some things that were just too “wo-wo” for me to grasp or accept, but all in all, the book was grounded and well-done. I think the author has made a good case for past (and future) lives of pets who mean so much to us. It definitely was fascinating to read all about it. Seriously, I never read anything like this before and may not read anything like it again. However, it has opened up a new world of possibilities for me to think about, and maybe some day accept fully. I received this from NetGalley to read and review.
“Our pets are born with distinct personalities and tastes, even though such preferences could not have been influenced through what developmental human psychologists would call nature vs. nurture. Like people, animals often display strangely eccentric personalities.”
Ever feel like you KNOW your pet. That somehow, you have a connection that cannot be explained. Dr. Shelley Kaehr a leading authority on energy healing and mind-body medicine.
Interesting read. Many times I was saying “yes,” I can relate.

Stories of profoundly transformative therapeutic experiences!
It seemed a bit slow in the first few pages, but when I started reading the Shelley A Kaehr clients' regression therapy experiences, I was trapped and couldn't stop reading, I was fascinated. Everything fit in a synchronized manner beyond space-time we know in the waking state. I have no doubt about the beneficial healing results described in the book, as a Facilitator in psycho-energetic therapies I can understand the power of the mind in giving transcendent meaning to our experiences and integrating them into our biofield to advance and grow.
In the second part, there are some exercises, which I recommend recording as audio and being able to follow them in the most relaxed way possible. Alternatively, it may be easier for some people to be accompanied by a friend or family member they trust deeply and from whom they feel highly accepted. I liked the way these exercises are narrated, there is a lot of subtlety in them, they take you to a safe, luminous, very loving containment space, where you can open up to get answers deep in the subconscious. The quality of well-being and the coherence of the responses largely depends on the higher state of consciousness that is reached, or in other words, the frequency of brain waves during relaxation and the pure intention that you put.
Personally, as a child I have had non-ordinary experiences and have been able to communicate with animals and plants, as described for Intuitive Empaths. Even I have the certainty of recognizing important people in my life, with whom memories corresponding to other historical moments have been activated, let us call them past lives or memories of the collective conscience. In general, in this life I have managed to remember and raise awareness of how interconnected we are, how much we love each other and choose to help each other through lives, no matter how hard the lessons are, it's always about relating with Love-Consciousness. The stories of the book support this very well as I have experienced. But what was tremendously lucid to read, is to expand this connection so deep with the masters of the animal kingdom and that surely extends to the vegetable and elemental kingdom.
My sincere appreciation to the Publisher and NetGalley for allowing me to review the book
Princess Fuzzypants here: this is an interesting premise that not only are humans connected deeply to their pets in this lifetime but they have been together many times before. The author says our pets can often help us understand things that drive us and help cure us of long seated hurts and wounds.
The stories of past lives that she documents from hypnosis and regression are often heartwarming or moving. Every human knows that we animals are their most trusted companions in times of crisis. They also know that, unfair as it might seem, we are destined for shorter lives than our human companions. It makes for the most wrenching of times. To know that not only will we meet again but that we will meet many times gives some solace.
I am not sure however how successful most humans will be with the do-it-yourself regressions that are provided in the book. We are after all talking about humans. Now, if it was kitties, there might be a chance.
While this book is unlikely to convert the sceptics, it is a quick and entertaining read into the world of “what if”.
Four purrs and one paw up.
I was happy to get a chance to read this book, unfortunately, I think I expect something a bit different. There was nothing wrong with this book, it was well written, I just couldn't connect with it.
An interesting and moving read, recommended to any pet lovers.
It made me reflect and think about the pets I lost but it also made me think that they are not lost forever.
i liked the style of writing and how the book is organised.
Highly recommended.
Many thanks to the publisher and Netgalley for this ARC, all opinions are mine.
Having had to recently put our 8 year old pomchi to sleep this book gave me hope. This book was interesting to say the least. I believe it’s a must read for any pet owner.
Thank you to the Llewellyn and Netgalley for the advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed are my own.
This book provided some wonderful insight into your current and past experiences with pets. Is it really possible to have the same pet come back in this life? In a past life? Have you experienced life as another animal in a past life? This book does an excellent job at explaining these types of questions. I still have some very raw emotions from my cat Payton I lost a few years ago, so before even reading this book, I asked myself "What makes him so special?" Is is really possible I could have lived a past life with him? Will he come back to me someday? I really hope so. It could be the fact that he was the first cat I ever truly owned while being out on my own, that we've been through 3 apartments and my marriage and having my baby, or the fact that the weekend he passed away, he came into the kitchen to say goodbye after a fun weekend with my best friend. I had to watch him die on the table before the veterinarian could assist with his passing, and that scenario constantly replays in my mind.
Recently I had tried reading another book on losing a pet, and I was only able to get through the first few chapters. This author said that once a pet is gone, it's gone for good. Most of us want to believe that they are near us when we need them the most, and this book provided the comfort I needed on a spiritual level. Although this provides "exercises" to self hypnotize yourself and to do these sessions the author does with her clients on you own, I really do not have a lot of quiet time to myself to try something like this at the moment with a 5 year old and two indoor cats, but I might try a few of these in the future in order to maybe help me further heal from my loss.
I really enjoyed the story about the grandma coming back as a cardinal as well. I lost my grandmother the same year I lost my cat. She had a love of cardinals and collected them. I made some beads made into the shape of an angel out of her funeral flowers along with a charm on it that says "When a cardinal appears, your angel is near". This hangs on the rearview mirror of my truck. This spring of 2020, my parent's have had a female cardinal try to fly into the window, insistent on trying to get into the house, just like this cardinal did and where I am sure my grandmother is at peace, part of me wonders if she was not paying a little visit to my parents in the house she used to live in. Unfortunately, my mom's cat killed this bird.
This book is uplifting and guaranteed to put a smile on your face if you have ever known the love of a pet. This was a great read, thank you NetGalley!
It's amazing how ordinary decisions you make are really part of your path. So many times I felt my departed pet on my shoulder reading this. I couldn't put this book down!
I am a huge animal lover and I have also dealt with the grief of losing a beloved fur baby. I loved the movies A Dog's Life and A Dog's Purpose and the thought that my baby could (or already has) come back to me brought me so much joy. This book was very interesting. There were some parts that were a little too "out there" for me, but other parts really resonated with me. It is definitely something you want to consider reading if you are dealing with the loss of a pet.
I’m new to the realm of the metaphysical so willing to try anything from Llewelyn, but this was just too “out there” for me. I don’t know if I buy into a sheep reincarnating as a cat. Seems a bit silly.
This is such a sweet and reassuring book. I think all the animal-loving readers at my library will enjoy it immensely. Thank you so much for the opportunity to read it early. We will be buying a couple of copies.
In 2013 I lost a cat to old age and kidney disease. It is hard to explain to someone who hasnt been close to a little four legged person the great sense of loss I felt. I often wondered where he was and if he was ok. I absolutely feel better now after reading this excellent book by Ms Kaehr.
First I never thought Id see hem again in another life or that maybe we had had lives together in the past. Now I do. The many examples and detailed stories of others experiences with their pet friends was fascinating. I have had cats and dogs in my life so I resonated with the dog stories also. I have never had an exotic pet or other that isnt common but all pets have souls I now believe so maybe that snake my son had when he was 7 that he loved ( I have never been close to a snake emotionally) had been with him in a previous life or even had been a different creature.
This book was the most interesting and worthwhile book on reincarnation and pets that I have ever read. Five stars definitely.
Thanks to Net Galley and the publisher for a copy of this book to review !
PAST LIVES WITH PETS
By Shelley A. Kaehr
As an animal rescuer and a proud fur mom, pets are a huge part of my life and my heart.
My hope for this book was to give me some sense of healing from the recent loss of a beloved pet. Unfortunately I don't think grief works that way. I won't say I didn't like this book because it just wasn't what I wanted it to be. The book is insightful and in some ways enlightening. Not the typical genre for me but can appreciate the things I learned from reading it.
