Many thanks to NetGalley, Berkley Publishing, and Mary Torjussen for the opportunity to read and review this book - 5 stars for a wonderfully-written book I couldn't put down!

An affair is never simple but when two married people (who work together no less) embark on an affair, things can get very messy indeed. Harry and Ruby are drawn to each other from the moment she begins working for him as his personal assistant. Ruby is not happy in her marriage to Tom and can't wait to start a new life with Harry. They decide on a day when they both will leave their spouses; Ruby leaves but Harry never shows up. Told from the points of view of both Ruby and Harry's wife, Emma, this is such an entertaining twisty tale.

There's no great twist in this book; it was just so fun to read this tale from these two different viewpoints. You'll feel for both women, even though you may not agree with the choices they made.

What a fun read - precisely what my mind needed to be occupied with today. Btw, someone had to tell me that today was Friday because I was convinced it was Saturday.... When I first started this read, I instantly thought this to be a slow burn suspense. Sometimes you just know right away, right? But the thing is, it is and it isn't.

This is a domestic drama, starts off at a prance and then trots to the finish. While this isn't really something new in terms of plot, the pacing had me engaged for the entirety and the red herrings are plentiful! I enjoyed every single little piece as it was put together with the rest of the pieces that led us to a few reveals. While these aren't 'slap you in the face' reveals, they do raise your eyebrow. Welcome to the minds of Ruby and Emma, the wives involved and both of them surprised me, but definitely more one than the other. Have no idea what I'm talking about? READ THIS BOOK. *wink*

I like a domestic suspense from time to time and thought The Closer You Get sounded like a good one. There are Ruby and Tom. She’s become a bit of a doormat and he’s emotionally abusive. It was easy to see why Ruby would find Harry a reason to leave her marriage. There are Harry and Emma. They’ve been married for years and things have grown stale. He’s quite taken with Ruby when she comes to work at his company. They have a plan to be together but somehow things go wrong and Ruby ends up alone. The novel moves between Ruby and Emma’s POV. I liked that just when I thought I knew how things would play out the author threw a curve ball and the story went down a new path. I appreciated the nod to Gaslight – a film I now want to see again after many decades. All told, The Closer You Get is a fast paced, suspenseful novel that I read in a couple of days. I’ll definitely look for Mary Torjussen’s previous books.

The Closer You Get by Mary Torjussen had a different plot twist and it drew the reader in almost immediately. Imagine having an affair only to get "ghosted". Then alliances form from the most unlikely of possibilities. A good story and I zipped right through it. I would definitely recommend this contemporary mystery.

The Closer You Get by Mary Torjussen was a five star read for me!

From the very beginning, I was hooked! Here’s what I loved: the constant tension, the fear for the characters as they delve into relationships with each other, the threat for Ruby from her husband. Mary did a fantastic job of keeping the reader engaged and intrigued.

Synopsis:

Coworkers Ruby and Harry are in love–but they’re married to other people. They decide to tell their spouses that their marriages are over and to start their new lives together. Ruby, who has wanted to leave her controlling husband for a while, tells him she’s leaving him and waits at the hotel where she and Harry are to meet. But Harry never shows up.

Suddenly, Ruby’s life has fallen apart, and she’s lost everything. Harry won’t answer her calls, and she’s fired from her job. She finds a cheap apartment in a run-down part of town, all the while wondering what happened to Harry.

Just as Ruby thinks she’s hit rock bottom, strange and menacing things start to happen–someone is sneaking into her apartment, and someone is following her home late at night–and she is going to have to fight for her survival.

I wondered who I could trust in this book, who was going to totally go off the edge? I really enjoy books like that that keep you quickly turning the pages and staying up late at night to see what’s going to happen next! I can’t wait to read more from this author.

Coming out on April 21, don’t miss this fantastic suspense!

I tore through this book in 24 hours. A fast, easy read with quite a few twists that you don't see coming. It's hard to decide who you dislike, who you feel for, who deserves what they get in the end. There is uncomfortable subject matter in regards to faithfulness in a marriage so keep that in mind if that's a sensitive subject for you.

Another one sit, unputdownable, soft, entertaining, a little predictable but still intriguing reading!

Meet with our two married characters who are not so happy with their lives: heroine suffocates because of controlling manners of her husband, the hero doesn’t love his wife anymore, meet at the workplace, fall for each other and decide to leave their spouses but then… nothing goes as they planned. See! It’s tempting, sexy, fast pacing story with so much lies, betrayal, surprises and the best thing you may need to give your full focus and get lost at its chapters!

Poor Ruby cannot stand to live with her irritatingly controlling and mentally abusive husband Tom. When she gets a job opportunity she accepts without thinking because it can give the freedom she needs, helping her being distanced from her suffocating home life. She meets with her married, charming boss Harry and it seems like love at work sight. Their whirlwind romance erupts in 18 months, blooming at a fancy, hot, memorable trip to Paris. Harry finally asks her to live together and of course she says “yes” because she is in love with him.

Ruby talks to her husband and she gets surprised because of understanding approach. Now there is no obstacle between the lovers. Ruby packs her belongings and goes to the hotel where Harry and she decided to meet. She begins to wait for him but he never comes! Did something happen to him? Because he always answers her calls and he never stands her up without any explanation.
She goes back to her work place to get some answers and she finds out she is fired! WTH? And other sucker punch comes against her face: her ex-boss and lover dearest took her PREGNANT wife to the vacation! Could it be true? Did he play with her from the beginning? So sharpen your nails, clench your fists, open your eyes, get ready for the revenge!

The story is told by Ruby and Emma (Harry’s wife). Both are likable characters and you may empathize with their feelings, motives. You read from their angles and root for both of them because they meant no harm and they did what they have to do. But I cannot say the same for the men parts.
It was moving, mysterious, captivating story that it hooked me up and I finished it at one night. It’s one of my favorite thrilling escape. Of course the outcomes are predictable, not so twisty. But it’s really enjoyable reading.
I’m giving 3.5 stars and rounding them up to 4!

Special thanks to NetGalley and Berkley Publishing for sharing this great ARC in exchange my honest review.

Excellent! Searing and Thrilling! A twisty turning tale about love GONE WRONG! I'm hesitant to say too much more because I think the less you know going into this book... the better. It was gripping.. suspenseful.. and kept me on the edge of my seat. It was definitely a thrill ride! Mary Torjussen does not disappoint. I've read all of her other books and have loved them and this one is NO exception. Highly recommended. This one will be an easy handsell!

Good read, makes one realize that people are not like they say they are. And who see's you when you think no one is looking? Just how far will you go for the things in life you think you want or need? Loved the book, thought I had figured it out and then the next chapter I realize I have not. I am excited to read more of her books. I would highly recommend this for a book club or somebody wanting to read something different.

What happens when you meet the love of your life, only to discover that they’re married to someone else. Come to think of it, you’re married to someone else too. Ruby and Harry are not happy in their respective marriages and now they have a reason to leave the past behind. Ruby leaves her husband and waits for Harry at the hotel where they agreed to meet. Only Harry never shows up. And now Ruby has lost everything, her marriage, her job and all communication with Harry, the love of her life. Forced to live a hand to mouth existence in a rough and tumble part of town, Ruby is sure things can’t be any worse. She’s wrong, dead wrong. This is a clever, twisted mystery.
