This book was a super cute, not meaning to fall in love but do anyway story. Erin was dumped 2 days before her wedding by email and Jason, her and her Ex's best friend comes to the rescue. Jason has been in love with Erin for basically ever and doesn't want to ruin their relationship with a sex only deal that Erin is offering. I'll let you read more to find out what else happens, but I will say, this book took a twist I wasn't expecting! The characters were cute and Jason was a vet who loved animals and it shows throughout the entirety of the story, Overall this a cute, fluffy romance with plenty of steam. If you're looking for an easy read, I recommend trying this one out for yourself! I'm hoping this is a series because I want to read what happens with Erin's sisters, Brenna & Honor!
Erin receives an email two days before her wedding that her fiance is bailing and going on their honeymoon without her. Jason is the best man that has had feelings for Erin since they were kids and wants to help her get through this jilting. There is a ton of set up for future installments in this series throughout this book, in an aggressive info-dumping way - ie. This is my friend Alice, we met in a snowstorm last year, her boyfriend is named Clay, she works in matchmaking and telecommutes to LA. Like, what? This is elementary school level writing (and while I'm not quoting exactly, because this is an arc copy, this is basically how everyone's intro goes down), something Burton should be well past with the number of books under her belt. I've read a few of her other books, and it is possible that this is the intro style she has always used - but for some reason it was annoying and quite glaring throughout The Best Man Plan.
Quite separate from that, the story is lacking proper pacing and character development. When the reason for Owen abandoning his wedding is revealed, with minimal pages remaining - I have to say Erin becomes the villain for being that dialed out. Owen is still a bit of a moron, but also was perhaps in the throes of a mental health crisis, which is never dealt with.
I didn't buy the romance between Erin and Jason, and it really should've been a story about her hooking up with a random best man, not a lifelong friend best man. How do you trust the competence of a person who was going to stand up at your wedding and sign your marriage license but also has huge misgivings with your relationship and has wanted to date the bride, for years, himself ? I know it's a romance and isn't that deep, but my God.
Sadly, this book was not at all what I was expecting from Jaci and I wouldn't recommend it - although it seems to have struck a positive cord with the other early reviewers, perhaps I am a dour monster?
Thank you to the publisher, via NetGalley, for providing me with an arc for review. This has in no way influenced my opinion.
I adore Jaci Burton and have for years. The Best Man Plan is Jaci at her best! Sexy, sweet, and full of emotion, I cannot wait to see where this series takes us!
ARC received via Netgalley for an honest review
I haven't read many Jaci Burton stories in the past, however I have liked what I have read to date.
I always end up picking up halfway through a series, so it was a nice change to come in right at the start for once!
They say the best way to get over someone is to get under someone else, right? That's Erin's plan, to get over her fiance by getting under his best friend/best man. Reading that, it sounds a little tacky, but really, this story isn't that at all.
Erin and Jason have chemistry out the wazoo, have years of friendship behind them, and already love each other in a platonic way
This is a slow burn of a story. Sure, there is lots of lusty feelings and long looks across the room, and some sexy times, but they don't rush into bed together - and I liked it. I don't think I could have respected either of them if they had done that,
I love the strong family bonds too #familygoals
I liked that Ms Burton has also given us some set up for future books in the series, and I am looking forward to reading them.
