As a beginning quilter, I have been searching for quilting books that give you the inspiration to think outside the boundaries of what is expected of a quilt block and this definitely did that. I didn't love that was dedicated to a single quilt block, but it did deliver on the inspiration! I felt that it was the type of book I would get from the library for inspiration, rather than a book I would want to add to my home crafting library.

Appreciated the technique to make the basic pattern and the the variations that followed but it just wasn't our cup of tea.

As a quilter, I am always looking for new and contemporary ideas to keep the hobby fresh and interesting. This book takes one block the ‘Country Crown’ block and turns it into 10 different quilts,
It does this by re-arranging the block settings, the colors, and taking the blocks apart into new pieces.

If you are a beginning quilter you will enjoy the step by step instructions at the start of the book.
If you are an experienced quilter, just move ahead to the patterns and ideas the rest of this book offers.

Bright quilts in clear photos are a treat for the eyes. Patterns and instructions make attempting to construct these quilts, a walk-in-the-park.

I think this book would be handy to have in the quilter’s library. It would expand and promote new ideas for using one quilt block in a variety of ways.

As a new quilter I love looking at quilt books to get ideas and to improve my techniques. I am also looking to expand my skills. This is a great book because it shows step by step instruction on how to make the different blocks. These look like complicated blocks but with the step by step instruction it makes it a little more possible. Or at least I feel that way. Another thing that is great for new quilters is the Learn the Lingo section. Sometimes old pros forget that newbies don't always know what some of these terms and abbreviations mean. If you want to expand your quilting this is the book for you. The quilts are beautiful.

Absolutely stunning! This book is a deep dive look into the Country Crown Quilt block. Paired with stunning visuals and easy but explicit instructions an advanced beginner and up sewing enthusiast would be able to dive into making one of these quilts. I would highly recommend this book to any sewing patrons at my library for the visual inspiration alone and followed closed with how easy the instructions are to follow.

A collection of 10 quilts using variations of the Country Crown block. Interesting to see how the same block can look so different. The block has piecing of flying geese and has some paper piecing for the corner squares. Not a fan of paper piecing, but also worked for English Paper Piecing, which I like better. Would recommend.

Rock That Quilt Block was a fantastic book that showed me the many ways that a single quilt block can be creatively changed to make many beautiful designs. The pictures were vibrant and helpful, alongside very clear and concise directions that even a beginner like me could follow. I look forward to making many of the quilts from this book and experimenting with my own designs, as well. I highly recommend this book to new and experienced quilters.

Delightful book for the quilter in your life. Different patterns and designs in the book give you a different perspective.

This is the first of Linda Hahn & Deborah Stanley's Rock that Quilt Block books I've had the chance to play with (thanks Netgalley for the ARC!) and it won't be the last! This book format tackles the hardest part of choosing a quilt pattern for most newbies, which is how to translate what I see in the pattern into my own fabric choices. The authors show lots of examples of how color placement impact the design, and how to take elements of the Country Crown block and move them around to create new designs of your own. The only missed opportunity to me was that while they provide lots of examples, there weren't any printable coloring pages so that the reader could practice the ideas presented. Still well worth the time, especially for a newer quilter looking to break free of prepared quilt kits!

An inspirational quilt block book. Has great ideas and patterns to try. Suitable for beginners through to advanced quilters. Clear easy to follow instructions and advice for all level of quilters.

Rock that Quilt Block is really innovative and has patterns that I haven't seen before. I like that the authors give you the basic pattern then offer suggestions to jazz it up a little further. While it is currently a bit advanced for me it is a book that I could see myself using in the future.
The descriptions are easy to follow and the patterns are clear. The front cover caught my eye which for a quilting book I find important as it makes you think there will be other fabulous quilts throughout the book.
Overall I would recommend this book be purchased and could see it being a popular book in a library collection.

I am a crafter and love making anything and everything. My Grandmothers on both sides of the family were quilters. I loved to see all their beuatiful quilts. My Mother is a huge sewer and I honestly think all the sewing I was around when I was younger is one of the reasons I love the beauty but don't put in the time and effort of sewing. But I do want to relearn the art of quilting. I would love to give my kids all a quilt for Christmas just my Grandmothers done for us.

This book is amazing the 10 quilts in this book are beautiful and make it look so easy. The book has all the patterns, and takes you step by step through the whole process of making the quilt. This book has me wanting to run to the fabric store and get busy. The book is filled with step by step color pictures so you can really see the process.

One of the things I love about quilting is the amazing creativity that results from making simple changes in colour, orientation, and size – even of the same block. I am currently fascinated by the hunter’s star pattern – I’ve done it in two colours, multiple colours, and am now exploring a design with it in various batiks. This is the third in the Rock That Quilt Block series, which offers patterns and instructions for variations on a single block pattern. This book focuses on the Country Crown block pattern – a fairly complex-looking block that is remarkably versatile. It’s made up of several elements, which can be flipped or moved or varied by colour, each change creating a very different design. The authors start with helpful instructions and guidance on supplies, choosing fabric, and optional steps like starching and prewashing. They then examine the block itself, breaking it down into its basic three elements – in the centre, a square in a square unit; in the corners, the triangle corner unit, which is paper-pieced (five pieces of fabric per unit); and on the sides, the flying geese unit. By breaking it down this way, a new quilter like me can see the block construction very clearly.

Additionally, they show how by reorienting a unit, or choosing the colours differently, you can create the 10 different projects featured. In fact, they offer more than a dozen images showing multiple variations one can create by making just one or two changes. Very cool.
The authors then show each project and briefly summarize the changes that are done to create that specific variation (see photo at left). Lastly, there is a section on the techniques you’ll be using – I particularly appreciated the step-by-step instructions for the paper-piecing (also called foundation piecing) process for the corner units. I picked up a very useful tip in this section, to crease the fabric and foundation paper to help you place the next fabric element! The 10 projects are then presented, increasing in difficulty. Each project includes a full page, full-colour photo of the final quilt, allowing you to flip between projects and really appreciate the variations. Each project of course includes fabric requirements, size information, and clear instructions on cutting and assembly, right through to binding and a reminder to add a label! I note most of the quilts are smaller lap quilts or wall quilts; many are square too, so if you decide to add a couple of rows to make it larger, you’ll need to figure out the fabric requirements yourself. There is an index planned though it was not included in the advance reading copy I received. I am in the process of attempting my first quilt design! This book has been so much fun and so much help particularly the backing fabric calculations and techniques.

Rock that Quilt Block is a tutorial and style guide for quilters offering step-by-step design and sewing instruction for the country crown block. Due out 1st June 2020 from Fox Chapel, it's 88 pages and will be available in paperback format.

This is a thorough look at how to break down one quilt block into smaller straight seam sewn units and put them together in various ways and with different contrasts to make *completely* different looking quilts. As such, the basic techniques can be used on any standard quilt block to vary and rearrange the units into an infinite number of variations.

The 10 quilts which are included in the pattern book use (mostly) similar units to make variations on the traditional country crown block pieced quilt. There are two sort of modern looking variations, and the rest are traditional quilts in traditional colorways. The authors include cutting and piecing information, so this would be a good starter guide for beginners. Templates are included.

Beautiful quilts and a perfect activity for the current world pandemic craziness. Five stars. I pieced some sample blocks from the templates and they were problem free. I did not calculate the accuracy of the given supplies needed for each tutorial, but with an experienced eyeball estimate, I found no glaring errors. Materials lists and supplies are given in both American standard and metric measurements. Each project's finished dimensions are given in the descriptions.

Simple but lovely book. I enjoyed it very much. Five stars.

Rock That Quilt Block is a really fun, beautiful pattern book that will inspire quilters to play with design and color as they work with a classic traditional block. The patterns are well written and the pictures are beautiful and really make you want to dive into your fabric stash. i think quilters will really enjoy this one!

I appreciate quilt books that take the time to revive, and explore new ways to use traditional quilt blocks. The Country Crown is a beautiful star block, and this book shows how it can be used to make an endless variety of quilt patterns. In this book Linda and Deborah’s quilts are skillfully made. Their instructions are clear, and I appreciate their attention to the needs of longarm quilters. I absolutely relate to their section on adding borders! I would recommend this book to anyone who is at an advanced intermediate level. Paper piecing, flying geese, and small cuts of fabric are laborious. It takes a lot of time and patience to piece together a quilt, and this book has long lists of cutting instructions. Some shortcuts for cutting, piecing, and using precuts would have made these patterns more accessible. As it is, this book is great for the motivated quilter who is looking to make an intricate quilt without complex instructions.

This is a helpful book if you're looking to learn how to break apart a large quilt into individual block elements, and how these individual block elements can be slightly edited and placed differently to create a new design. I appreciate the tips and reminders the authors included of things to double-check before sewing blocks in place to avoid ripping out seams later. If you're looking for patterns that 'wow' you, this may not be the book for you. It did not really do it for me. Although I skew towards appreciating more modern blocks (which there was 1 of), I feel like the traditional block patterns available in the book are the same or very similar to some you can find online. Again, the strength of this book isn't in one-of-kind patterns but showing you step-by-step how to create the blocks. The modern block quilt included is gorgeous and I wish more quilts like it were included.

I would say that I am disappointed that many of the images used in the book are stock photos that say "shutterstock" all over them. I realize that this is an early proof so the final photos in the book will not say this. However, it just seems like for this type of book, you should include all original photography.
