This is a good book for someone starting canning and throughout the process. The author has been canning for years so she has the knowledge and experience to share. If you haven’t canned before this is a good book to help you get started. It even provides some interesting history and then some basic information on how to get started. You will receive information on the equipment you need as well along with options of food preserving for fruit and vegetables.
This is not just a canning book. You get more with it, which is interesting and helpful including freezing information, which you might not expect. The organization isn’t the best and directions could be better, but overall it is an interesting book with helpful details.
If you are considering canning, but aren’t sure this might be a good book to read to help you get a better understanding of canning. It includes details such as why to can and what the process is all about. It will give you some information to help you prepare and be a resource to use throughout the canning process as well. There are great photos throughout that went well with the helpful tips and recipes too, which look good.
Canning is a lost art. For those of us that want to excel, this book is an amazing resource. It covers the basics and advance techniques. The only thing you need will be supplies, food and seasoning. Good luck. Share your canning photos, #CanningEssentials
As someone new to canning this book is extremely helpful. Learning the different types of techniques to use for different foods was a lifesaver...literally! This book is very well laid out and simple to follow. I very much enjoyed it and plan to use what I learned from it to put up much of the harvest from my garden this year.
Canning Essentials is a great book for anyone who is new to canning food. It offers a lot of information on how to preserve produce and it is easy to follow.
The book also offers many salsa, jam and pickling recipes. I only wish there were a few more creative and out of-the-box recipes in this book.
All old skills become new when the world throws a lockdown party. I have processed through canning for many years but very targeted foods that do not lend that skill to canning a large garden excess like we will see this year. I really needed quality information presented in a manner that was easy to understand and apply to my home kitchen. This is exactly what I was looking for. Jackie Parente gives clear instructions with many trouble shooting tips and doesn't make the reader feel like an idiot. Everyone I know is getting a copy of this book this year!!!!
This book is great for beginners and those like myself that have preserved for a little while but aren't experts. It has very helpful tips and recipes with photos. It also gives a bit of a history lesson on the benefits of preserving your own foods. Freezing, water bathing, pressure canning and blanching certain foods. What foods should be frozen and what shouldn't and same with the other two methods. Very helpful book.
I got a free copy from netgalley for reviews and my opinions are my own.
Lots of info, and it seems very practical. I keep telling myself that I’m going to can more summer produce and I’m looking for a book to inspire me.
A beautifully written and photographed book that contains everything you need to know to store produce in a variety of ways!
The book has chapters, yes whole chapters, and not just a page, devoted to:
-why to can
-several methods about how to freeze!
-utensils and equipment to use
-pressure canning
-hot water canning
-acidity and how it affects canning
---- SO many more topics!!!
This book is really chock-full of information. It is a perfect all-in-one resource for the home preserving novice or expert!
I received a free ARC as a reviewer for NetGalley
Good book to use for beginner and intermediate cooks. Few good tips in the book. Good illustrations and recipes. Recommended.
I loved this book!
It had so much useful information for beginners - advanced canners. I loved the different techniques, recopies, and trouble shooting ideas. Plus the picture layout is amazing (Every heard a picture is worth 1,000 words? Well, it definitely applies here). This book really helped get my creative brain working now I can't wait to start canning this summer!
I grew up watching (and helping) my mom and grandmothers preserve home-grown fruits and vegetables. But, in my adult life, I've never had the time or the courage to do any canning. This book has given me lots of courage! It is so nicely organized with easy-to-follow directions and every possible thing you'd need to know to be successful. Directions and recipes are accompanied by diagrams and mouth-watering photographs. I also like the variety of recipes provided, from traditional jams and jellies to chutney and Amish or Mennonite recipes. There's also a chapter on Pickling and one on Freezing produce. I would highly recommend this book to anyone who is thinking of preserving their own (or farmers' market) produce. I'm going to buy it!
Having done canning myself since I was a child, I have always been fascinated with this form of preserving. This book is full of enticing photos which makes this reader want to make a few different types of batches right away. The explanation for how each type of canning works and what food is best used for each type of canning. There is a thorough discussion of all the different types of tools needed for each type of canning. There is an abundance of recipes throughout the book. There is also a section of Mennonite/Amish recipes at the end. There is also a section for 'what when wrong' and the possibilities of fixing the error. This is a definite how to guide for those who want to or are already canning. Well done!
Thanks to NetGalley, the publisher and the author for an ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a good solid book for a home canner. Especially if you are new to preserving foods.
There is discussion about freezing foods ( what you can and cannot ) along with how to do it.
As for the canning. She covers the supplies needed, helpful tips, how to pick and clean/prepare the item you are canning. Talks about things that can well and those that don't. Covers pressure canning vs. hot water bath canning.. And supplies many recipes.
A very good all round book
This cookbook is an excellent food preservation resource for beginners and experts to canning. I am very impressed with the detailed information and layout of this book. The photography is just beautiful and it truly compliments the knowledge within the book and makes each recipe and instructions interesting to read.
I loved the in-depth overviews on the origins and different types of food preservation, while short and to the point it is filled with interesting facts. This book covers details far beyond canning so I found that to be a fantastic win. For a beginner wanting to learn how to preserve foods I most definitely recommend this book. It is filled with solid advice on what works best for different types of food and how best to preserve it.
It also gives a rundown on how foods are transported out of season and it's lasting nutritional value. This is something I find very interesting because we are ingrained to believe fresh is better but how fresh is it really?
This book is written with food safety and current processing standards in mind and recommends not using recipes that are old family favorites or online unless they meet current food safety standards. this is great advice for a beginner because leaning how to do it correctly and keeping up with current guidelines will ensure your beloved recipes remain safe and healthy to prepare. The advice is practical with excellent step-by-step instructions. I also found plenty of recipes that I will use in this book.
I received this book from NetGalley and Fox Chapel Publishing for an honest review.
A valuable addition to the home canner's shelf with such an abundance of recipes for various jams, salsas and more. Delicious ingredients and easy to follow instructions.
I received an advanced reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is the first book about canning that I have read and enjoyed it but found it didn't really get to the canning part until quite far into the book.
The recipies looked great and it sounds easy to follow too.
I enjoyed the beginning with how to start and different methods of canning that you can try too.
Canning Essentials by Jackie Callahan Parente is an excellent food preservation resource for beginners and experts to canning. The conversational tone of the book offers readers an easy read—while the beautiful photographs, practical advice, step-by-step instructions, and wonderful recipes make the book a complete hit.
Canning Essentials is a great resource if one is unfamilar with canning as there's lots of information in it, as well as a bunch of recipes. I only wish there were a few more interesting recipes in this book.
Canning essentials by Jackie Callahan Parente is an amazing resource when it comes to food preservation! This book has it all! First they give you a run down about convenience foods compared to old fashioned food preservation that asks great questions and really gets ya thinking. You are then told the different methods of food preservation, given a list of foods that are compatible with each method and also given a mini biology and chemistry lesson! This book takes you through step by step and is very through! There are recipes for just about anything you would want to can! I am blown away by this book. I highly recommend this book to anyone who wants to begin preserving their own food. This book will be useful to not only a beginner but even for someone who has been canning for years.
This cookbook is more textbook than home-canning friendly. Way too much technical and intense details especially about not using any recipes dated before 1988. I’ve been canning and freezing foods for decades as did my mother before me. Never had any mishaps. But as much as I love reading cookbooks, I’d rather refer to my Ball cookbooks as they’re more user friendly. Appreciate a book that gets right to the basics rather than repeating not to use grandma’s recipes is more likely to turn people off.
I received an arc from NetGalley in exchange for my volunteer review.
