The Salmon Sisters: Feasting, Fishing, and Living in Alaska: A Cookbook with 50 Recipes by [Emma Teal Laukitis, Claire Neaton]I received this book from NetGalley in exchange for my honest review. All opinions stated are my own.
Fish, fish, fish. I have family in the salmon fishing business, and we joke that their world is just fish, fish, fish. This book captures all the best about Alaska and salmon fishing. The recipes are great, but more than that, it communicates the community and the love that are part of this very special corner of our country.
If you love salmon, you'll love this book.
Anyone who has visited Alaska knows how beautiful it is. Yearly fishing trips are scheduled there, and some of the best fish and seafood comes out of that state. Emma Teal Laukitis and Claire Neaton have lived in Alaska their entire lives and have grown up in the family fishing business. While on long trips on boats, they have developed recipes using what they have taken with them and being mindful of the diminishing fresh foods as the boat trips go longer. The sisters’ story is fascinating, and The Salmon Sisters: Feasting, Fishing, and Living in Alaska: A Cookbook with 50 Recipes is a great book to sit in a comfortable place and read cover to cover.
In the early chapters, there are good illustrations of different kinds of fish; most of us won’t recognize them, since most of our experience with fish is out of a grocery store. Not only are there illustrations, there is enough information for most of us to know what we are getting when using different types of seafood.
No matter how good the information is in a book on the subject, the most important thing is the recipes. And in this excellent cookbook, they are incredible. There are also beautiful photographs (not enough, and not of every recipe), which make it possible for readers and cooks to choose what they want to make and know how it should turn out. Salmon and Avocado Eggs Benedict is a new favorite recipe, and also Sautéed Halibut with Lemon-Pesto Butter (anyone who has eaten halibut in Alaska is very lucky and knows just how good it is). The recipe for Halibut Chowder is perfect. There are recipes for crab, shellfish, and even octopus.
Not only are there recipes for great seafood dishes, but also soups and wonderful sauces to top grilled or fried fish. Also included are vegetables, salads, breads, side dishes, and desserts. These sisters have outdone themselves with the variety of the recipes, which are easy-to-follow and written so anyone can turn out picture-perfect dishes from this cookbook.
Anyone who wants to learn about seafood will find that this becomes their “go-to” cookbook. It is excellent and highly recommended.
Special thanks to NetGalley for supplying a review copy of this book.
Lovely recipes and the opportunity to learn about life as a fishing family in remote Alaska. I'd like photographs for a few more of the recipes, but that may also be a function of the fact that it's an ARC
I really enjoyed this book. I love the recipes and methods of preparation which I'm always looking for. Photos were great as well.
After 30 yrs living in interior Alaska, I thought I had cooked salmon every way possible. But I certainly learned several new recipes and enjoyed the back story of the Salmon Sisters. Beginner or expert, if you've ever wondered how to cook salmon or wondered about the communities that depend upon fishing and tourism, read this book.
What a joy. The tales of growing up in the Alaskan wild relate the happiness of a life up sheltered from nature and reared with a sense of stewardship for the seas. You can almost feel the sea air and the wash on your face. The prose was reverential, the recipes common sense and insightful. I envied their bounty and splurged to make the halibut bisque enjoying outside to somewhat copy the experience. Their common sense use of space inspired me to minimize my use of space to mimic their economy. I loved the fact that each sister is a compliment to the other’s sensibilities and expanding their family to include spouses that enhance their work . The subject of this book is only limited by your imagination. Happy reading
Good book with lots of salmon recipes. I will definitely try several of them. I enjoyed reading about the different fishing methods in Alaska.

This was a fun book to read! The recipes sound delicious but more than anything, I learned a lot! The authors wrote in-depth to the many types of fish/seafood, sustainability, and living off the land. I enjoyed the many stories of the sisters growing up. The photos are stunning! This was a beautifully written book and a delight to read. Thank you to the publisher for the advance reader in exchange for my honest review.
What a lovely cookbook!
We start off meeting Claire and Emma’s family. Then they describe types of fishing in Alaska and next we talked about the different names/types of salmon and when they’re in season. Whenever I go to the grocery store, I never knew what each name technically meant so this was very helpful. After that we got tons of delicious recipes with lots of photos. The halibut chowder sounds delicious and looks easy to make (typical ingredients and the recipe is easy to follow).
