Black Rock Falls at Halloween - what could possibly be scarier than that? This town, why would anybody live there? The body count just keeps rising, I am surprised that there is anybody left alive in this small town. This is book 8 with Kane and Alton trying to keep the peace and once again it is carnage all over town. How much can one small town take?
The cases roll into each other and the victims keep coming. Firstly the pair are called out to a home invasion that has ended in the murder of man lying next his wife. The wife calls 911 and is in serious shock. and so the hunt begins. As always it doesn't end there and this time the big guns of the FBI are called in to help as all signs point to a serial killer who has being running around the country for the last 20 years.
I hope that we see more from the FBI characters Jo and Ty. They brought a lot to the story and something a bit different from the usual characters. In Jo we see h=somebody other than Kane that Jenna can be friends with.
As always the ending with leave you breathless with so much going on you won't know if you are coming or going. Another great instalment and looking forward to more
It sems ages since the last D.K.Hood book and wh#en this bad boy appeared in my #Netgalley account I was over the moon. I've read this series from the start beginning with Don't Tell A Soul. We are at number 8 in the Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane series set in Blackwater Falls, Montana and in my humble opinion it is equally as good as the rest, all I ask is that we don't have to wait quite so long for numbers 9, 10 and 11, hint hint. I've said it before and I'll say it again I wouldn't move to Blackrock Falls for all the tea in China and anyone who does needs their bumps felt.
They have a perpetrator of the sickest kind and the team really have their hands full trying to catch him especially as he has seems to have an lot of forensic making this a something of a nightmare for them. He breaks into a house and manages to murder a man whist leaving his wife with his brains all over her. He's still in the house and she hides in a closet while she waits for the police to arrive. Jenna is more than a little suspicious of her. There's a black feather on the first victims body which is the first and most significant clue, although initially this is disregarded by Jenna and the gang.
As always the weather is absolutely atrocious and to make matters worse its Halloween giving this murderer excellent cover to move around Blackrock falls undetected. With bodies dropping like flies this time they appear to need a little help so in Her Broken Wings we meet a few new characters Jo Baker and Ty Carter (who I initially thought that I wouldn't like him but he did grow on me towards the end) they did seem to gel well with Webber, Wolfe and the adorable Maggie. I really hope that we see more of them in the next books.
I enjoyed learning more background information about the team but sadly no romance between Jenna and Dave as yet. I'm really beginning to feel like that the author is enjoying teasing us readers with the almost Ross and Rachel type scenarios. Please put me out of my misery and let them get together as they so obviously care deeply for each other in more than just a work colleague style.
I have to be honest and say that at this moment in time D.K. Hood is one of the few American authors that I read and thoroughly enjoy, my preferred genre is mostly British crime but these ae just far too blinking good to resist. This is a very highly recommended American police procedural, with short sharp easy to read chapters making you turn the pages at a rate of noughts until suddenly its finished. My only issue is that the books themselves aren't long enough and I know that authors work hard writing for our pleasure but I'm such a #GreedyBookworm that I'm always disappointed to get to the end.
Read for an honest review. Thank you Ms Hood, Bookouture and Netgalley
Unfortunately for me this is the first Kane & Alton book I have read, but it certainly will not be the last. Jenna is a fascinating character and the small glimpse into her past you see in this book makes her even more intriguing. The supporting characters from a deputy with a mysterious past, medical examiner who has too many connections to count, and a small town with too many characters to list.
It does not seem murder would be a frequent occurrence but murder can happen anytime. Faced with murders that seem to have motives and murders that seem truly random point to more than one killer. A face paced book that will keep you engaged and has a super twist, or two.
Wow and yet another fantastic read from DK Hood. I have read all of her books and they just get better and better. Loving the new characters and hoping they will stay active in the series. As usual this book is a page turner and just another chapter read. All the twists and turns and fast moving story make for a great read. I did have my suspicions but I was not completely right. Excellent read well done again.
This book can be read as a stand-alone, though reading the previous ones would help in understanding the characters better. A fast paced story of a serial killer though the suspense was predictable inspite of the red herrings. There was a slight drop in pace around 50% of the way. New members have been added to the team who we would probably meet in the future. A good read. 4.5 stars
They're back! They're back! They're back!!
Jenna, Kane, Wolfe, and Rowley - the delicious police team from Black falls were back in their places when a home invasion killed the husband and left the wife shocked. And things kept on rolling with a fervent pitch at every incident. Jenna and team were kept completely bamboozled right uptil the end.
I have read nearly all books by the author D. K. Hood, and every time I would think she couldn't surpass this, she did. There was something so loving in my gaze when it fell on one of my most favorite team. I loved how they worked like a well oiled machine. The attention to detail in every part of the book made me fall more in love and awe at Ms. Hood's writing. She was so clear and precise.
I lived that the author made the book challenging to the police team to solve. The criminals were getting nastier and more cunning, and now it felt that the were deliberately baiting Sheriff Jenna Black. I loved how Jenna kicked their asses even after a rocky start or two or three, but they did manage to get their perps at great cost to themselves.
Each book of the author is a challenge, and the Broken Wings in this gave wings to my reading and I could finish it at one sitting. A fantastic police procedural from my favorite team.
Absolutely just WOW….. I just can’t get enough of this series, you think how the hell could she top the last one and then BOOM…. This is the 8th book in the series and this one has literally blown my mind…. Back in my favourite virtual place… Serial Killer Falls…. Just kidding, Black Rock Falls but won’t be long before it is called “Serial Killer Falls”….
Sheriff Jenna Alton and her partner, Deputy Dave Kane have their work cut out for them this time, when a 911 call brings them to a murder scene, Lucas Robinson was shot in bed whilst he lay next to his wife, the wife unharmed…. Suspicious, absolutely and Jenna is sure his wife is hiding something, upon examination of the scene, a black feather is found in the blood… however, two further bodies are discovered of two males who were found in the woods with a black feather placed at the scene, things are hotting up…. What is the significance of the feather?
The FBI are called in and Jenna & Dave team up with Jo Baker (behavioural analyst specialist) and Ty Carter (which I hope to see more of going forward).
The body count is rising and they are shooting blind…. This was a fast paced read, I could not put it down, I just love this series and what an explosive ending to this one…. If you haven’t started this series, I would highly recommend that you do!!!
Another gripping read in a must read series. This one ups the ante on pulse pounding suspense. The most complex case yet brings new characters to town from the F.B.I. I really hope we see more of Jo and Ty in future books as they made great additions and added relationships for our characters. Jenna, Kane, Wolfe and the rest of the crew have several murders to contend with. This one is full of action and surprising twists that the reader won't see coming. I am never disappointed by this author.
I would like to thank Netgalley and Bookouture for an advance copy of Her Broken Wings, the eighth novel to feature Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy David Kane of the Blackwater Falls, Montana Sheriff’s Department.
Carol Robinson wakes to hear an intruder in her house, hears gunshots and her husband is shot dead as she lies beside him. Unfortunately this is only the start of the killings so the team are facing another serial killer in their small town.
I enjoyed Her Broken Wings which is another high octane read with a violent killer and a creepy atmosphere. The novel follows the usual formula with the narrative told from Jenna’s point of view with occasional switches to the unnamed killer and other relevant characters. The killer is cold blooded, merciless and extremely forensically aware so it’s a battle to catch him. Fortunately the team is experienced and have a newly formed local(ish) FBI team to call on for help. It should be noted that some of the crimes are fairly gruesome and while not lingered on gratuitously they might give the more faint hearted pause for thought.
I really liked the efforts to catch the killer as they are tense, urgent and atmospheric. The team’s jumpiness leaps off the page and infects the reader. I’m glad no one caught me unaware when reading it as I would have screamed! The novel is also fast moving with incident after incident and little time to draw breath and when they do it’s a big mistake.
The solution was interesting in that I didn’t see it coming although I guessed that they were barking up the wrong tree with their initial suspects, which is not an unlikely scenario in crime fiction. The explanation for it all pushes my credulity but the author does a good job of explaining it. It depends on where you stand on the issue whether you will find it likely or not.
I have come to really like the team at serial killer central and there is a brief explanation in the novel as to why this is the case. David Kane, Jenna Alton and ME Shane Wolfe are all former federal law enforcement officers relocated to Blackwater Falls to hide them. As a result they are the best qualified and experienced Sheriff’s officers in the country. The author has decided to supplement this wealth of knowledge by adding two FBI agents to the roster, Jo Blake and Ty Carter, again experienced, smart agents. I’m wondering how the author will top this killer and if we will see the FBI agents again. It would be a shame not to as, after a rocky start, they fit in well and are on their way to becoming fast friends. I like the sense of camaraderie and all in it together mindset that plays out in this series.
Her Broken Wings is a good read that I have no hesitation in recommending.
Carol Robinson is lying in bed next to her sleeping husband, Lucas, when an intruder comes into the bedroom and shoots him dead. After hiding for a while Caroline finally calls 911. Sheriff Jenna Alton suspect Carol but all the tests back up her story of being next to Lucas when he died. Then two more bodies are discovered in a near by forest. Two young men have been shot and there’s a link to Lucas’ murder - a black feather left at the scene. With an increasing body count, an angry young man searching for his mother’s body after 20 years and a growing list of suspects. Jenna and her Deputy Dave Kane have their work cut out. Help is on hand from an FBI agent known to Wolfe the ME who has recently moved to a nearby town.
Another installment of the Alton & Kane series that I couldn’t put down. I’ve read them all and they just keep getting better. Love this series.
Thanks to Netgalley, Bookouture and D K Hood for the ARC of this book in return for an honest review.
Another great story in this series. Lots of twists and turns. and a big surprise.
The characters all work really well together and I look forward to more.
Thanks again to the publisher and #NetGalley - and especially #DKHood for the opportunity to read "Her Broken Wings" in return for a fair and honest review.
Whew! First of all, I cannot believe we're up to Book 8 in the Kane & Alton series. It seems like only yesterday that we were getting to know Jenna and Dave as they teamed up in Black Rock Falls and hunted their first killer; how time has flown.
Welcome back to Black Rock Falls - Serial Killer Capital of the World (and not a title that they enjoy having, but one that we're very glad of as it brings us tale after tale featuring Alton, Kane, Wolfe, Webber, Maggie, and all the denizens of the town) where Mrs. Robinson - an inspired character name if ever there was - wakes up to find her husband's brains scattered all over their bed and the killer still in the house. When she finally manages to call 911, the hunt for the killer begins.
Along the way, more and more bodies are added to the count [They're dropping like flies!] and Dave and Jenna have teamed up with Jo Baker and Ty Carter from Snakeskin Gully (great placename); they're both FBI, and she's one of the best Behavioral Analysts in the business, exiled due to her husband's taking up with her former boss at the FBI. It seems like the Chameleon Killer has moved into their neck of the woods.
At breakneck speed the story jogs along and there's plenty of action for the adrenaline junkie. But, there's a lot of depth to the story, too. I particularly enjoyed the discussions regarding Dissociative Personality Disorder (DPD) or Dissociative Indentity Disorder (DID) as it's sometimes called. Great research by Ms, Hood to add verisimilitude to the murderer.
Thanks, also, for the twist. Never saw it coming!
Recommended. Highly recommended.

This book is filled with hard hitting action and delicious surprises. Sheriff Jenna Alton and Deputy Dave Kane sure have their hands full in this, the latest book from the incredible author D.K. Hood. I simply adore Ms. Hood's writing. Her writing is straightforward and uncomplicated. Her plotting makes perfect sense and one event follows another in a strictly logical manner. Her characters are realistic and likable – for the most part. Jenna's team is incredible. They work very well together and like one another. I like the way that sufficient information is given about their backgrounds to flesh them out as people, but not so much information is given to detract from the story line.
Lucas Robinson is shot in his sleep while his wife lies beside him. Hysterical, she hides under the bed then runs downstairs and hiding in a closet calls the police. Jenna is suspicious of her, but she is not making much sense. Examining the scene, they find a black feather in Lucas' blood. While the sheriff and her deputies are trying to make sense out of Lucas' murder, all hell breaks loose. They learn that Lucas had a girlfriend and he, as an investment advisor, had some very unhappy customers.
Meanwhile more murders occur. More black feathers. Does the little Montana mountain town of Black Rock Falls have a serial killer running around? Again?
Hold on to your hats, readers, for the surprise ending!
I want to thank NetGalley and Bookouture for forwarding to me a copy of this absolutely great book for me to read, enjoy and review.
Having read the previous 7 books i was looking forward to book 8 and the wait was worth it....
Another chilling dark plot in the most dangerous town of Black Rock Falls investigated by Detectives Kane and Alton but this time we have 2 new characters who hopefully will appear again
A highly recommended read
Another phenomenal instalment to this series. I love the new characters and hope we see them in future books. Many murders to solve in this book. Some scenes had my heart threatening to burst out of my chest. A very scary Halloween in Black Rock Falls. Book 9 can't come fast enough for me, Thanks to NetGalley, Bookoutre and the Author for allowing me to read and review this book.
Black Rock Falls, quite possibly the serial killer capital of the world, is getting ready for Halloween so everything must be just fine, right? Umm nope! When the local sheriff's office receives a desperate call from a woman living on the outskirts of town they have no idea just how dangerous things are about to get. As the body count rises Sheriff Jenna Alton, partner Deputy Dave Kane, and ME Shane Wolfe find themselves up against an adversary wanted across the country, can they stop the killings before he moves on again, and his victim count keeps rising?
This is a wonderful series with great characters, inventive storylines and a familiarity which welcomes you in each time you begin a new book. There is a theme running through all the novels but no major spoilers to prevent you starting with any of the eight books released so far. Obviously all good things must come to an end but I hope there will be a few more outings for this trio before that happens.
I was able to read an advanced copy of this book thanks to NetGalley and the publishers in exchange for an unbiased review and would recommend it to anyone who enjoys this series the author or wants a first class read over a number of novels.
Oh my, oh my God... This is another cracking story!!!
In my opinion this author really deserves the title of Queen of Suspense. The way she creates an atmosphere is amazing! She had me listening for noises, looking over my shoulder or out the window ... I totally had the feeling someone was going to sneak up on me too. Jeezes, that truely is the creepiest thing, but it's oh so utterly fantastic.
Jenna and her team are great. They always look out for each other and you just have to love Wolfe and Kane. (and Duke of course :) )
She had chills running down my spine and I just could not stop reading. If I'm honest, I was not only reading, I felt like I became part of the story.
Incredibly, mind-blowingly brilliant! 5 stars
Thank you, D.K. Hood and Bookouture
Book 8 in the series and what a fantastic book it is.
It dark, gory and totally addictive. I couldn't turn the pages fast enough.
The introduction of two new characters brought a new dimension to the story and I hope we'll see more of them in future books.
I can't recommend these books highly enough.
Already looking forward to the next one.
